It had stung. The one time she actually decided to take a chance on a guy asking her out and he'd just been using her to get back at Nancy's family.
The thought wouldn't leave her mind. That she wasn't good enough. It haunted her, it taunted her. No matter how often Nancy and George told her Alan had just been an asshole, that Bess was actually wonderful. She'd liked him. He'd used her like she was nothing. A means to an end. It wasn't fair. It hurt in a way Bess hadn't been hurt before.
She hadn't been enough.
