Daylight’s blue sky is slowly fading to darkness. Shinsou hangs out on his small balcony, humming a tune as he waters his flowers. A hobby he shared with Y/N thanks to them. His 1-B classmates have been teasing him lately, saying that he’s in a cheery mood. It’s a glaring change from his low-spirited detachedness for sure. But he wouldn’t have it any other way.
Shinsou Hitoshi takes a deep breath. Even now, after several dates he’s still nervous. Butterflies in the stomach. Heart stuck in his throat. His hands shake, Shinsou reminds himself to take another deep breath, and runs a hand through wild purple hair. Staring at his reflection in the mirror he thinks, Don’t screw this up.
With a quirk like his, Hitoshi figured everything in life was slotted to be a disaster. Nobody would like him. That was a firm belief.
You look like a villain, walk like one, talk like one, act like one…
A brainwashing quirk is considered a villainous quality. But his dream is to be a hero. To make a world where actions matter over humanity’s shallow views.
And for somebody to like him for him, Shinsou is over the moon. He was shocked when they asked him out. All the things Shinsou hated about himself, they love. How could he not feel the same? Y/N’s smart, funny, and together they kick ass in team projects.
It’s raining. The subtle tak-tak-taking of rain on glass crafts a cozy atmosphere. Shinsou stocked his room with plenty of snacks and drinks and queued up a list of movies and shows. Like a director to a film he gives it a double take, making sure it’s perfect.
1-A and 1-B classmates have gathered in the lounge, their voices muffled by rows and rows of walls. Shinsou can hear them setting up for karaoke night. Shinsou smiled and stifled some laughter. He remembers them trying to quash his nervousness, and offer their utmost support. Itsuka and Uraraka flipping through glittery Hero Vogue (the colors so saturated that they burn your eyes) and discussing which articles would be helpful. Iida and Kirishima gave him “manly noble” advice, whatever that entailed, but Hitoshi consumes and followed it diligently.
A knock on the door pulls Hitoshi out from his thoughts. Opening the door he sees Y/N smiling. “Hitoshi!”
“Hey, good to see you.”
“What’re we doing tonight?”
“Movie night.”
The two are happily munching on popcorn and watching [show/movie]. Some old and some new. Shinsou’s a calm observer while Y/N is an energetic reactor. Betting on which characters get killed off by the slasher, how funny some one-liners were, and geeking out about the fandoms they’re in. Which sequels are better, which ones need a sequel, which ones were worse than the first movie. They do a lot of talking with long pauses in between.
Blaring music pulses through the UA dorms –but it doesn’t bother them. Uraraka and Bakugo are in a rap battle against Monoma and Tetsutetsu. Then Mina is doing her best rendition of Girls Just Want to Have Fun.
“Okay okay, that was great. But!” Denki and Sero grabbed a microphone and stumbled up the temporary wooden platform. “We can do better.”
“I’d like to see you boys try,” Mina shouted.
“What’s the song gonna be?” Jiro asked. She provided crystal clear audio by plugging into the sound system.
After much deliberation, Denki selected a song.
Thunder rumbles out over in the distance, slowly floating towards UA. Flashes of lightning accompany Denki’s scratchy voice.
Y/N and Shinsou laugh. After the villain attack at camp, it’s nice seeing everyone so happy. Even at the expense for their eardrums.
Deafening thunder cracks overhead. The power goes out thanks to Denki’s quirk powering the raging storm. Bakugo starts shouting and reprimanding Denki while Kirishima tries to calm everybody. Izuku offers to check on the others while Itsuka says they should also search for candles. Shoto creates a small light, a fire in his palm, so that his friends can walk safely in the dark corridors.
“I have some candles in my room,” Y/N said. They leave to gather some. Grabbing a haul they go back to Shinsou’s room and light the candles. Y/N smiles, their [color] eyes reflecting the flickering fires like starlight. “This is kind of romantic.”
Hitoshi thinks so too. He’s surprised though. After their initial panic, Y/N wasn’t upset that the date was ruined. In fact, they saw the good in this awful situation.
The two lounge on the sofa, Y/N’s head resting on Shinsou’s shoulder.
“I’m sorry this date sucks,”
They tilt their head to look up at him. “What? Why’s that?”
“Because our movie night was ruined and I couldn’t take you anywhere exciting. I originally planned for us to go to the amusement park but since the rain came in…well.”
Y/N clasps their hand over Shinsou’s, their fingers intertwined. “I do like going to a lot of different places but only because my friends –and you, are with me. I like spending time together no matter where we are. Besides. Not every day has to be exciting. The slow days can be memorable too.”
Thunder shouts again and scares Y/N. They jump from the sound and fall towards Hitoshi who wraps his arms around them. He never wants to let them go. A smile cracks his detached frown. “Jumpy now are we?”
Y/N snorted and laughed –at themselves and Shinsou’s joke. “Shut up. But yeah. I feel cozy here so I think I’ll stay,” yawning, they shut their eyes.
“Sounds good.” Both feeling at peace they spend the rest of the night talking about whatever and Shinsou can’t imagine of any other person he’d rather be with right now. This is one of those old days they’d look back on in their elderly years, a warm fuzzy memory treasured in their lives.
