In Sickness and In Health

Summary:

Following Lita’s miscarriage, Kane realizes how much she means to him.

Work Text:

Lita’s eyes were lifeless. She refused to meet his eyes despite his attempts.

An unfamiliar, gnawing sensation settled in the pit of Kane’s stomach.

“Lita, say something, please.” Kane’s tone began sounding annoyed before it shifted to begging.

If it wasn’t for the slow fall and rise of her chest, he’d think he had lost both her and their son.

“I…” he trailed off.

Lita finally looked over at him. Although she’s given him a fair share of both glares and pleas, something about the defeat in her eyes made him want to kill Snitsky even more.

Kane tensed in anticipation as Lita moved her lips, trying to will words. She barely spoke following her hospitalization and now even less. His head cocked as she seems unsure of what to say.

”Kane.”

He instinctually reached out to grab her hand, giving it a small squeeze.

“The baby…” Lita’s voice came out hoarse.

Kane hanged his head, giving her hand another squeeze. “I know.”

“You wanted the baby.”

”Yeah…” He whispered. Kane had created life with Lita in exchange for Matt Hardy’s well-being. He’d felt the need to continue his bloodline, his legacy, and Lita seemed the ideal candidate.

Lita gave a small and humorless laugh, although she looked on the verge of tears. Her voice shook as she said, “I’m not pregnant anymore.”

Kane tried to steady his breathing. Right now, his focus had to be on Lita’s recovery. Thinking about their lost child and the circumstances behind the miscarriage only brought out the hellfire within him.

“You don’t need me anymore.”

Kane stiffened and shook his head. “No, no, that’s not true.”

”You said I was just a vehicle for your seed,” Lita reminded him, calling back to his wedding vows.

”I shouldn’t have said that,” Kane said in a rare apology. “You’re not…I think some things have changed.”

Used to disturbing others, Kane doesn’t know how to handle the unsettled feelings Lita’s words evoke within him.

”Yes,” Lita agreed, but Kane suspected not in the way he meant. She then turned away from him again.

A moment passed in silence.

Her next words should bring out the fire in him, yet he only feels torment and regret. His actions have brought her to this point.

”Let me go.”

He rubbed his left hand against his head, the overhead lights reflecting off his wedding band. In a soft and low voice, Kane said, “I can’t.”

She’d been the means to an end of a wicked plot devised by his sickened mind. At first.

Lita met his eyes, turning over again. “Please. You don’t have any reason to stay married to me. You heard what the doctors said.”

The combination of the blunt trauma, her D&C, and damage to her uterus left her unlikely to have children.

Kane’s eyes were unfocused as he admitted, ”You’re all I have.”

Lita only stared at him.

Kane took both her hands into one of his. “I need you, Lita.”

One-sided. Imbalanced power dynamic. Whatever. He’d found that her presence in his life awoken something within him. Lita’s refusal to back down to him, annoying as it may be, appealed to him, appreciating the fire in her.

He needed to bring her flame back to life.
