Work Text:
You have known all your life that you were destined for something greater. You’ve known this practically since you were a grub; even before your ancestor told you herself. Then your ancestor died and you were stuck, alone, in your little hive in the middle of nowhere.
You knew what would happen, when it was going to happen, and the fact you could do nothing to stop it from happening. Maybe you could alter it in some way, or make it hurt less, but no matter what it would happen.
After all, greatness doesn’t come easily. It comes with a lot of suffering and pain, not just from yourself, but from the people around you. The people you considered your friends. Your friends could alter the things they did, they could change things. But, you? No.
No matter the timeline, no matter the universe, you would always have to suffer the same fate. You knew it wasn’t fair, you hated how unfair it was.
But you couldn’t do anything about it.
And now you can. You are happy because now you can do whatever you want. You knew this would happen too, but you never knew it would be so good– so fun! You are finally free, free to do whatever you please!
But right now you felt like everything was crashing down onto you. Like your hive collapsing onto your already rotting body. Maybe that’s why you’re scowling currently, staring at someone you consider a friend. The Maid of Hope stands before you, objecting to your previous words.
“B-But, that ain’t fair, AA! You k-know it ain’t!” The tall violet blood stumbled over her words, rifle in hand. He had her rifle pointed right at you. Good job trying to reason with the troll who has been using guns since hatching, Araden. To be fair, you aren’t really surprised. Most of your friends never really listened to your antics, but it was okay because they weren’t supposed to unless the time was right. But times like these were not times to be fighting and disagreeing with you of all people!
“Of course it isn’t, Ampora, but that’s just how this works. That’s how this game works.”
“Oh, the game y-you tricked us into b-belieweing w-was some innocent fun? The game you knew w-would get our ancestors killed? The game that d-destroyed not only our planet but the human’s planet too? That game?”
“… Yes.”
Their finger was on the trigger, you could see her hands shaking, probably out of anger. But, you know L’ronah. She is a coward at heart, barely even being able to kill a few small lusi without the help of his ancestor.
“Ampora, what do you want me to do? Do you want me to stop this game? Because, if so, I can’t do that.”
“W-why not? You got us i-into this mess, so you’re gonna get us out of this!”
“Do you honestly think I would’ve convinced all of you to play this game if I had a choice?”
Maybe out of pity, L’ronah lowered her rifle a bit, seemingly trying to contemplate the words you were saying.
“The answer is NO, by the way. But if we didn’t play this stupid game, we all would’ve died no matter what and would’ve just been some stupid, unimportant ghosts from a doomed timeline that no one cares about!”
She raised her rifle again, more defensively this time.
“I barely understand a w-word you’re fuckin’ sayin’, AA,” She finally responded, “But w-whatewer the hell you’re sayin’ can’t be w-worse than this! I mean, come on, you d-died! CG and GT too– And TA! And I still don’t ewen understand h-how any of you came back!”
Mentally, you facepalm. You’re so bored of this conversation right now. You do not want to explain everything to someone else again. It isn’t even that hard to grasp! Your friends are just… Fucking Idiots! All this arguing is making you exhausted, maybe you’ll just disappear for another few days and hope everything works out. I mean, so far it seems everything has been moving like clockwork without your influence. Maybe you’ll just wait till the end of the game, only working in the background to make sure everything stays in check.
“Listen AA,” L’ronah lowered her rifle again, this time captchaloging it as well. It almost looked as if she was crying. “I just w-want this game to end. I don’t w-wanna see my friends die and suffer and hawe to go through horrible things! I'm begging you just, p-please make this stop! All of it!” He pleaded, doing a begging motion with their hands. You could almost roll your eyes in disgust. This, this display right here? It’s honestly just pathetic, though that’s pretty on brand for L’ronah– For all Amporas.
“Ampora, how many times must I repeat it till I get it into your thick skull? When will you finally start using your think pan and realize I can’t do anything. I’ve told you this— I’ve told all of you this multiple times!” This time you actually physically facepalmed, “Suffering is a natural part of this game, you know. So is death. We can’t do anything to change that fact and the fact you cannot use your think pan for once to grasp that idea is sad. If it were up to me, I wouldn’t let any of us suffer, but it's not, so I can’t do anything to change that.”
You know this game isn’t fair, you know it’s awful and horrible and if you didn’t know any better you’d probably be just like L’ronah. But, you’re not. You do know better, you probably know better than anyone participating in the game. Maybe it upsets you because you feel like you were dealt a much shittier hand than all your friends in life.
You patiently wait for a response from her, only to hear quiet, soft sobs, which are followed by distant footsteps, which are also followed by quiet “honks”.
“Well, that’s my cue to leave, Ampora,” This entire interaction has been agonizing and pitiful. “Goodbye, we will meet again in the distant future.” As you fly away, you hear L’ronah say something to you, but he was much too quiet to hear, especially over all the honking.
Another day, another doleful interaction with your friends in this ludicrous game.
