In the Soft Light of Morning

Summary:

“Turn it off,” Yuqi groaned with a piteous whine as she buried her face deeper into the crook of her partner’s neck, “it’s too early.”

The insistent buzz of alarm clocks might have become a familiar aspect of Song Yuqi's morning routine, but that doesn't mean that it is one that she's ever quite managed to enjoy. However, a different part of her morning routine might be enough to brighten the day...

Work Text:

“Turn it off,” Yuqi groaned with a piteous whine as she buried her face deeper into the crook of her partner’s neck, “it’s too early.”

A soft, albeit fond, chuckle escaped the other woman’s mouth as she stretched her arm out sideways to swipe the pad of her finger across the face of Yuqi’s phone. “It’s your alarm you know,” Soyeon murmured into the soft hair at the crown of Yuqi’s head, “you’re the one that wanted to wake up at six.”

“Well,” Yuqi huffed, “that’s because last night’s Yuqi was an idiot and figured it’d be a problem for this morning’s Yuqi.”

“Hey now,” Soyeon interjected with a smile, “let’s not call my girlfriend an idiot—even if she didn’t make the smartest decision last night.”

“Look,” Yuqi grumbled as she pressed her cold nose against the blazingly hot skin at the hallow of Soyeon’s throat, “if anyone’s allowed to call me an idiot then it’s me. I’ve lived with myself the longest.”

“Nope,” Soyeon replied with a short sharp shake of her head, “that’s not how it works. No one’s allowed to call my girlfriend names without answering to me—that’s the rule. It says so right on the first page of the Protective Girlfriend Handbook.”

“Ugh,” Yuqi groaned, “it’s impossible to argue with you.”

Soyeon’s chest rumbled with barely contained laughter as she tightened her arms around the younger woman’s shoulders. “I know.” She said. “It’s all part of my charm.”

“Charm…” The blonde-haired woman hummed thoughtfully. “I suppose it is, after all, you’ve somehow managed to get me to sleep in your bed practically every night.”

“And to fall asleep on video every night that you’re not actually here,” Soyeon argued, “because you don’t like to sleep alone.”

“I don’t.” Yuqi said with a slight nod of her head.

“I never thought I’d be someone that couldn’t sleep without their partner, but I’ve got to say… I hate the nights that we spend apart.” Soyeon marvelled as she ran her fingers through Yuqi’s sleep tangled hair.

A quiet hum of agreement reverberated through Yuqi’s chest. “I’ve never liked sleeping alone—you know that—but it’s never been like this with anyone else. On the night’s that we’re not together I spend the entire time wishing it could be you instead.”

“I know,” Soyeon said, “I don’t sleep half as well without you as I do when you’re in my arms. I’ve never envied Miyeon’s ability to sleep anywhere before, but now? Now I kind of do.”

“Minnie actually laughed at me the other night,” Yuqi said with a laugh, “when I was waiting for you to call, I apparently had the most pathetic expression she’s ever seen on my face.”

“Don’t remind me," Soyeon groaned, “you looked like I’d personally kicked your puppy when you picked up—I actually thought something bad had happened.”

“Nothing bad.” Yuqi murmured as she pushed herself up onto her elbows to look down into Soyeon’s dazzlingly dark eyes. “Just that you’ve stolen my heart.”

“I didn’t steal anything,” Soyeon said as she reached out to tap her finger against the tip of Yuqi’s nose before looping her arms around the taller woman’s shoulders, “I prefer to think of it more like an exchange—I gave you my heart, so, I took yours in return.”

“A mutual exchange huh?” Yuqi murmured thoughtfully. “I suppose I can get behind that idea—I mean, coming from you it’s fucking adorable.”

“Thank you,” Soyeon grinned brightly in reply, “I learned cuteness from the best after all.”

“The best?” Yuqi’s eyebrow quirked upward in amusement. “That’s quite the high praise there.”

“Please,” Soyeon laughed, “I’ve been saying that you’re the cutest person on Earth for years—even before we got together.”

“I know.” Yuqi said. “That doesn’t mean that I don’t love to hear it though, and every other thought that goes through your mind. I want to know everything.”

“Do you want to know what I’m thinking right now?” Soyeon asked softly before swiping her tongue across her bottom lip—her eyes following the flicker of Yuqi’s gaze to her mouth.

“What are you thinking?” Yuqi murmured distractedly, her eyes dancing across Soyeon’s face, over the fine slope of her cheekbones to the sharp cut of her jawline.

“That I know you want to kiss me right now.” Soyeon said confidently. “I’m just wondering what’s taking you so long to do something about it.”

“We were talking,” Yuqi mumbled, “I don’t want to be just some hormonal pest around you…”

“Well,” Soyeon tightened her arms around Yuqi’s shoulders to pull the younger woman’s face closer to her lips, “I want my good morning kiss.”

“Of course,” Yuqi whispered breathlessly as she let her body settle against Soyeon’s torso and her mouth to meet the plush softness of Soyeon’s lips. “I love you.”
