At first Kyle’s not entirely sure what to make of being exiled. She should, she thinks, be used to it by now. Life was never quite fair after all, but somehow she finds it hard to care. She’s strong enough to survive after all, unlike some.
Tiffany, she thinks, would not survive without her. The woman had woken Kyle with her screams as she’s dragged here, deposited where the lost people go. Exiled. The name on Tiffany’s lips is familiar of course. Nica. Always Nica.
They’ve both ended up here for the crime of loving Nica. Loving someone who is trapped with a family who think the girl needs to be kept away from society. It’s easy at first for Kyle to ignore it, the ache in her own heart. She is a little too busy trying to sooth Tiffany after all. Being an emotional wreck will get the woman killed.
Things change overnight. Nica is deposited with them. The girl’s screaming rage echoes and Kyle’s eyes close even as Tiffany bolts upright in the bed they share in the ridiculously small tent. Now it will have to fit three of them. Somehow.
Nica’s chair is broken of course. A final ‘fuck you’ from the gods. Still, Kyle thinks as she picks the girl out of the broken chair. It could be worse. She could have been dead, left as a tribute to the finality of their situation.
“Ow…”
“Sorry.”
Kyle’s voice is rough, husky and she can feel Tiffany watching her even as she carries her back to the tent. They are both silent, then Tiffany reaches for Nica and Kyle is more than happy to set the girl down into her lap. Living as rough as they are has been tricky, but now at least they will be together.
“I’m sorry…”
Nica’s voice breaks into her thoughts and Kyle sighs as she settles herself, watching Nica closely then speaking softly.
“For what?”
“You…. You and Tiff… only got left here because of me…”
“You’re worth it.”
Tiffany speaks softly.
“Both of you.”
Kyle ducks her head then, hiding her smile behind her hair. She might be frustrated sometimes by Tiffany, by how flirtatious and slightly insane the other woman is…. But she’s starting to love her too.
“I’d say the same.”
She admits softly, staring at her hands where she’s been fiddling with some flax. She’s a little nervous, even now. It’s rare for her to trust people… she just hopes it will be worth it this time.
“Well, we’ll have to find a bigger tent.”
Tiffany murmurs and Kyle can’t help her snort.
“Yeah, cause that’ll be so easy…”
“We’ll figure it out.”
Nica sounds so sure that Kyle openly laughs.
“Well, we’ll see…”
She murmurs. She’s the one, of course, who hunts, who tends to scavange, leaving Tiffany to tidy their small tent and home. Now all they can do is hope that things will get easier.
