master chef, king of the kitchen

Summary:

"It's so easy," Black had said, "that even you can't fuck this up."

Gray had laughed, ruffled Royal's hair. "Maybe not the way I'd put it, but she's not wrong. Don't worry, kid! You've got this!"

"Of course!" Royal had said, brimming with confidence. "How could I not?"

Work Text:

“I did it yesterday!” says Royal--calmly! Because he’s a calm person! And level-headed, and always prepared, and… and good at cooking! And yes, perhaps the first time he tried this yesterday, he might’ve had the smallest, tiniest bit of help from Gray (i.e., telling him which ingredients to pick, what heat to put the stove at, how to properly stack the ingredients, when to flip the sandwich, et cetera,) but…! “It’s… meant to be this way!”

Robin glances over from where she’s finally got the fire alarm to stop making noise (and really, why does it sound like that, wouldn’t something like soothing piano or birdsong be so much nicer to hear, especially if they’re worried about a fire?) and says absolutely nothing. Like always. Like always, but….

Eurgh. Royal looks down at the pan, pokes at the lump inside. Some of the charcoal flakes off, revealing inside… more charcoal. Another poke, more flakes, and underneath… even more charcoal.

…It could just be its appearance, couldn’t it?

…Or so he’s hoping, but when Robin glances back away and he sneaks a taste, it becomes immediately obvious: nope, he was right, it’s just charcoal. Eurgh.

Luckily, his phenomenal acting skills carry the day--when he starts to cough immediately after and Robin turns back towards him, he manages a wink that must be charming under the tears, clears his throat a reasonable amount of times, and says, “Just--urk--breathed, wrong.”

Which… actually doesn’t sound much better than the truth. Augh!!!

Before he can come up with something else, though, Robin jumps off the chair she’d been perched on, trots over, and holds up her phone for him to see. And a part of him is hoping for some reassurance, another part is braced for you are so pathetic lololol, but when he finally forces his eyes to focus on the screen what’s pulled up is…

…a Domino's menu.

…Royal sighs. Takes the phone, types in the number. As he listens to it ring, Robin grins, and looking at her smile he can’t even be upset.

(Well. Mostly.)
