A/N: 2023.08.11

Talk about another series I can't stay away from. I've always wanted to do another story with Hiro/GoGo but then it occurred to me. I really like GoGo and Honey's friendship and decided to work on that. The result is something I'm very happy with!

The title is inspired by the Lee Dewyze song of the same name, which came out in 2010.

Enjoy!

Work Text:

Sweet Serendipity

GoGo sat at her workstation in SFIT Science Lab, letting some music play in the background since she was alone. Her playlist was on random, playing songs most usually wouldn’t associate with GoGo, such as old American pop music. Instead of going over her latest project, however, GoGo was going through her computer’s photo album, studying the pictures of herself and Hiro. She came to one picture of her and Hiro not too long after they first started dating. They had just told the team about their relationship and, since they didn’t have to worry about telling the others and could be as public as they wanted, they went to dinner and an arcade. GoGo smiled at the picture.

But slowly the smile fell away, and GoGo had to face an emotion she hated. Fear.

A moment later, Honey Lemon walked in, placing her bag by her chemistry station. She absentmindedly began humming and bobbing along to the song that was playing in the lab. “Sweet Serendipity” was one of her favorites. It suddenly occurred to Honey that music was playing and coming from GoGo’s station. Honey saw GoGo staring at her computer screen. “Hi, GoGo!” Honey said, cheerfully.

GoGo didn’t respond. She didn’t even move.

Honey raised an eyebrow. The music wasn’t that loud. “Hey. GoGo?” she asked, concernedly.

Still no response.

Honey walked over and tapped GoGo on the shoulder. “Hey.”

GoGo blinked and looked up at Honey. “Oh, hey! Uh, sorry, sorry!” She turned the music volume down. “Hope that wasn’t bothering you.”

“No. Actually, I love that song.”

“Of course, you do.” GoGo looked around, “When’d you get here?”

“Maybe two minutes ago?” Honey answered. “I said ‘hi’, like, two times.”

“Oh. Sorry, guess my… head’s somewhere else.”

Honey looked at the screen. It was a selfie picture of Hiro and GoGo outside of the arcade. Hiro was kissing GoGo’s cheek and GoGo was blushing and smiling more than Honey was used to seeing until GoGo and Hiro became official.

Honey smiled, “You guys are such a cute couple!”

“Yeah…” GoGo whispered.

Honey immediately caught GoGo’s tone and froze. Honey looked at GoGo, “Did something happen?! Oh, no! You guys didn’t breakup! Please, tell me you didn’t breakup!”

“No, no. Not at all. I mean… we’re having dinner with Aunt Cass tonight.”

“Oh,” Honey breathed out. “Oh, okay. Great.” She studied GoGo again. “But… what’s wrong?”

“I’m…” GoGo sighed. “I’m freaking out!”

“You? Freaking?”

“Yeah.”

“Why?”

“Because…” GoGo groaned. She leaned against her console and ran her hands through her hair, “What if I mess this up?!”

“Excuse me?!” Honey asked.

“Honey… at no point when we met, did I expect this to happen between me and Hiro! Then, suddenly, out of nowhere, I notice how handsome he is and how sweet he is and how so freakin’ cute he is! All I could think about for weeks before we got together was how badly I wanted to kiss him!”

“GoGo, I can’t believe I’m about to say this to you, of all people, but you’re not making any sense. I mean, seriously, you’re confusing me ‘cause I have no idea where you’re going this.”

GoGo stopped and took a breath. “I know.”

Honey pulled up another chair, sitting next to GoGo. “Just… say what’s bothering you. I promise, I’m not gonna judge or anything.”

“Okay.” GoGo took a breath. “What if… what if… he never really wanted this?”

“I beg your pardon?” Honey replied, immediately.

“I mean, yeah, he does… now. But… what if he stops wanting this? We only got together because he’s still hurt over Tadashi. What if he… gets over that… then over me?”

Honey stared at her in shock. “Are you seriously telling me you think that Hiro is only with you because he misses Tadashi?”

“I mean, yeah!” GoGo answered, honestly. “Why else would he…”

“GoGo, stop!”

GoGo jerked her head back.

Honey took hold of Lemon’s hand, smiling. “Hiro loves you.”

“I know,” GoGo said, desperately, “but…”

“Just let me finish. You two… you’re great together. Yeah, something… awful is what connected you. But… that doesn’t mean how you both feel is wrong or that’s gonna change or anything. I mean, you guys were good friends before Tadashi died. That doesn’t mean, at all, that’s the only reason he’s with you. How people get together… how they fall in love… there is no roadmap. No proven, absolute, one-size-fits-all formula.”

GoGo looked down. “But what happens when he stops being hurt? What happens when he doesn’t need me anymore? What if he stops wanting me after that? What if… he stops loving me?”

“GoGo. Look at me.”

GoGo lifted her eyes up to meet Honey’s.

“That. Will. Not. Happen!”

GoGo smiled a bit.

“He loves you!” Honey smiled. “I’m almost jealous of how much he loves you! But I’m not because I’m sooooo happy you guys are together!” She shrugged, “Yeah, I mean, he still hurts over Tadashi… but nowhere near as much as he used to. And that’s because of you. But, and I can’t stress this enough, that is not the only thing keeping you both together. You just work. That’s why you guys are together. It’s love… and it’s real. He’s not going anywhere. You keep being there for each other. Things are only gonna get better from here. I promise.”

GoGo considered all Honey just said. As usual, Honey was right. GoGo knew it all along. GoGo was simply in a panic before. She never wants to lose Hiro, but Honey’s advice was sound. More often than GoGo had ever admitted, Honey was the cheery voice of reason GoGo needed.

GoGo stared at her, “Honey. You’re my best friend.”

Honey gasped. “GoGo…”

“I don’t tell you that enough. You’re always there to talk to. No matter how… distant I am. You go out of your way to be there for me. I don’t deserve it. I’m sorry I don’t tell you nearly as much as I should. Thank you.”

Honey smiled, fighting back the urge to cry. “It’s what friends are for.”

GoGo smiled.

“I…” Honey became jittery in her seat, “I really, really wanna hug you.”

GoGo held her smile and just held her arms out.

Honey squealed and dashed at GoGo, hugging her as tightly as possible. Laughing, GoGo shook her head as she hugged Honey back.

“You’re my best friend, too,” Honey declared.

GoGo just held her smile. She sighed. “Look…” They separated a bit, “…try not to get… too happy when I ask this.”

Honey’s smile refused to leave her face. “Okay.”

“Do you wanna go get ice cream?”

Honey squealed again, in an even higher pitch. “YES!”

GoGo rolled her eyes. She chuckled, “C’mon. My treat.”
