Work Text:

Hobie and Miles were just wrapping up their work at the dining room table when Miles’s parents came home early. It's not that Miles didn’t want his parents and Hobie to meet, but his dad was a police captain and Hobie was… Hobie. Enough said.

“Miles we’re home!” His mom announces from the front door, still out of view of Miles and Hobie thanks to the entry hallway. Miles sends a pleading look up at Hobie, but he’s not really sure what he’s pleading for, though the eyebrow raise he gets in return is not reassuring somehow.

“Welcome back!” Miles yelled to his mom from their spot standing in front of the kitchen table.

“Whose shoes are these?” His dad demands, “Do you have someone over? We didn’t say you could-”

“Uhh-” Miles answered intelligently.

“Calm down Davis, a boy can have friends…” His mom walked into the room and trailed off as she unexpectedly had to look up to look at his ‘friend’.

“Well who…” His dad, hilariously enough, mirrors his mothers response.

“Captain Jefferson, Mrs. Morales, it's such a pleasure to meet you.” Miles just about broke his neck looking to see who said that with Hobie’s voice, and to his surprise it was Hobie, who was stepping up to his parents with a friendly smile and an outstretched hand.

“I’m Hobie, I’ve been hangin’ with Miles for a bit now, so it's about time we met.” His mom shook off the shock first and reached out to shake his hand with a still somewhat nervous smile.

“Hobie, is it? Nice to meet you.” Once she let go his father took a step up and grabbed his hand to shake.

“How do you and Miles know each other?” He asked, reminding Miles of his Detective Voice , he tried not to flinch, looking up helplessly at the two.

“We met through a mutual friend, and then started doing some creative projects together.” Hobie explained easily, choosing his words wisely so they were technically true.

“An artist?” Davis shoots a note of assumption in his voice as he examines Hobie’s clothes and black lipstick.

“Well I’m more of a musician to be honest,” He says, gesturing to the guitar on his back, “but I rekon everybody’s a bit of an artist, innit that right?”, that got a chuckle out of his parents. Things seemed to be going really well, but somehow that was making Miles even more nervous, wondering when the other shoe would drop.

“Hobie, weren't you?” Miles points to an imaginary watch to indicate the time.

“Yeah,” He nodded and turned back to his parents, “Sorry to cut this short but I was just heading out for the night, I hadn’t realized it had gotten so late.”

His mom nods, “Well it was lovely to meet you Hobie, please come over for dinner some time so we can get to know you,” She elbows Miles a bit, “,you know Miles doesn’t bring a lot of people over these days.”

“Mom!”

“Heh, will do, see you all later.” He waves as he starts walking backwards towards the front door, Miles chases after him.

“I’ll see you out!” He intentionally doesn’t look back at his parents, not wanting them to do or say something that’ll ruin such a good first impression.

“What was that?” Miles asks after they get into the elevator.

“What?” Hobie looked down at Miles with his eyes, trying to look casual, but ended up pursing his lips and looking the other way before saying in a quieter voice, “S’it a crime to want you boyfriend's parents to like you?” Miles' heart melted and his face felt hot. Hobie, rebellious and crazy cool Hobie, was embarrassed about sucking up to his parents, Miles’ parents. Because he loves him and knows how much he loves his parents.

“No…” Miles murmurs, feeling like he wants to scream it as he gently laces his fingers between Hobie’s, his hands were always so cold to the touch, he brought his hand up to his mouth and kissed his knuckles, as if trying to warm them up with his lips. He looks up with his eyes, now feeling shy about doing something so sappy, “Thank you.”

Hobie looked down at him with a sweet smile, head tilted to the side, “Least I could do,” Hobie he says as the elevator dings. As the door opens he leans down to place a kiss on Miles’ cheek, followed by a mischievous grin and pursing his lips again for a moment, ahhh Miles couldn't believe how hot he was, he felt like he was in a daze when watched Hobie leave. Miles might have missed something Hobie said, he assumed it was a goodbye and replied with his own as we watched Hobie swing away.

When he came back up to the apartment he found that his mom had heated up the dinner from the night before, and with an empty stomach went straight to the table and started making himself a plate. He was just about to dig in when he felt like he was being watched, he looked up to see his parents looking back at him, his mother looking a bit shocked but also like she was holding back laughter, his dad had a hand covering most of his face, looking embarrassed but also like his mom, holding back from laughing.

“What's up? Did I do something funny?”

“Uuuh no, not funny.” His mom responded, looking at him strangely. Miles looked down, now worried he had somehow left his suit on.

“Well then what is it? Do I smell, did I forget something?” His pats his coat feeling for his phone and keys and-

“Hmm, baby it's just, you got some...” She laughs as she wipes at her own cheek to indicate that there is something on his. He mimics the gesture and is surprised to see his finger some back with a slightly greasy black substance, and then he puts it together. Hobie’s black lipstick was on his cheek. In front of his parents. Who didn’t know he was dating Hobie. Suddenly Miles had an idea of what Hobie had said earlier.

Miles covered his face with his hands and groaned as he slid down in his chair, hoping the ground would just eat him.

“A good friend then?” His mom asked, obviously trying to sound well meaning.

“Nooo, I mean, yes,” He couldn't help grinning behind his hands a little as he answered, “but ugh this is not how I wanted this to go down.” It was supposed to go down two weeks ago over ice cream  but he chickened out at the last second.

“It’s nothing to be embarrassed about, baby, I mean he seems like a nice boy, very tall.”

“He’s certainly expressive .”

“Davis!”

“Hey hey I’m just saying! And I’m not sure how I feel about you having him over alone.”

“Daaaadddd oh my Goooood.”
