"You were reckless." Dream escaped from his group, away from everyone as soon as he felt a familiar pressure that pressed into his temple.
The voice comes first, sounding relieved more than anything, but that would mean he would have been worried in the first place. Which seems unlikely, knowing HD for as long as he did, its just unlikely.
Soon, what came next was a crackling distorted noise, a man, who took the appearance of his friend appeared before him.
There was a look of worry in his eyes, but Dream knew better, HD loved to hide his true emotions with others, playing tricks and pulling heartstrings is his favorite hobby.
He was always bragging about how inferior humans were, how expendable the were, constantly teasing him about his morality.
So there was no way he was worried for someone like him. Human.
Rolling his eyes, Dream strips off a metal arm brace, one of the straps had snapped off. He's irritated, annoyed, frustrated, name it and he's sure he's feeling it. HDs playful, yet obnoxious personality was not something he wanted to deal with. He drops the brace to the ground.
"What are you talking about?" He says with annoyance, he turns his back to the god who furrows his brows at him.
"You're too attached to your soldiers, sentimental really, they're your pawns and you have to act in order to save yourself. Only you are capable to lead Dream..."
He pauses, not completing his last thought, waiting for something, Dream isn't sure for what, so he keeps quiet, which signals HD to keep talking.
"And kill your damn enemies Dream! Once they have a look of your face, they'll come back to kill you!"
Dream rolls his eyes a second time, he's used to the lectures, but the constant spews about how his soldiers, his comrades were just pawns were pissing him off. His closest friends are part of his group, and he won't leave them behind.
Dreams been told countless times, how different a mortal like him was, compared to a diety like HD. He knows, which means HD should know how irreplaceable his friends and their relationships were.
He should know, he took the imagine of his best friend after all.
It was a taunt, a tease. HD knew something he refused to admit at the time.
"Where is that ruthless warrior Dream?" HD tilts his head to the side, even his voice was an exact replica. "Did he get too soft and went to go play house with Georgie and SappyNappy?"
Dream continues to ignore him. And when HD doesn't get a response, he frowns, annoyed.
"Would be a shame if a fire broke out and burnt that house down into ashes."
The threat finally causes a reaction from the legendary warrior. "Fucking touch them, and I'll be known as the first human to kill a god."
HD is taken aback from the reaction, but hides it well with a scoff. Dream has never threaten him before, and with the anger seeping through his teeth, HD almost believes he'll make due with that promise. There's a terrible ache inside his chest.
Which pisses him off all the more.
Growling, HD says, " I taught you to be a warrior Dream, a leader to lead the sheep into victory, imagine their surprise that the idiot leader gets himself killed because he couldn't tie a loose end!"
Dream bends down to pick up the metal braces from the floor, knowing they could used again, reshaped and become useful again.
"No matter what group you have behind you, no matter the amount of people you have in your army, you'll constantly win with my teachings and you'll not be an idiot and get yourself killed with something that can easily be avoided if you spared a few more soldiers! You know this!"
Dream groans, throwing his head back with a small grin on his lips. "Why are you like this? Why are you so fucking selfish, and so filled with pride? We're not livestock, and we sure aren't your fucking entertainment."
"You are different from them." HD says with severity, sounding sincere, he follows with "Why can't you understand that?"
"But I'm not." Dream interrupts, eyes locking to the god who illuminates a small glow, it's a physical reminder of how different they really are.
"I'm as replaceable as a worker ant, remember? Those were your exact words..." Dream waits, hopeful to find some sort of reaction from HD, hoping he looked somewhat regretful for saying that to him.
But he gets nothing, and so he continues.
"Every night, I'm in a nightmare, and every day I'm awake, I'm living in another nightmare, whereas you blink and feel absolutely nothing, I'm here dealing with the strain, the absolute pain that I let another one of my friends die."
"Friends..." HD laughs pathetically, "you've got to be kidding me."
Dream sees red. Friends. They were friends, or at least that's how Dream saw their relationship. He thought he could rely on someone like HD with things like this, but he's only disappointed again, afraid again that the god really gave absolutely zero shits about him.
All these years of constant guidance, of time spent in the forest, either learning or goofing off. Had meant nothing to the great god HD.
"What don't you understand? Aren't you a god? How is something like love and friendship so hard for you to understand?" HD doesn't give a response back, he simply glares.
Grabbing the ends of his hair, Dream continues, "Every fucking night, I have a nightmare that George's blood is on my hands, that there's a spear lodged unto Sapnaps chest. That everytime we go into battle, it might be the last time I see them..."
"Without those friends, you wouldn't feel that fear, you wouldn't have nightmares plaguing you, nothing would be in your way..."
"That's not the point!"
Dream breathes heavily, catching his breath from the loud gesture. HD stares at Dream's feet, avoiding eye contact altogether now.
"You know, for a long fucking time I saw you as my friend too HD, you did teach me alot, and I'm just disappointed in myself that I couldn't teach you shit about friendship...about love."
HD frowns, eyes snapping to look back at Dream. his casual aura disappears, as a distortions apppear all across his body, changing his appearance to his originality. He's tall, but he's mentioned to Dream once that he was actually short for a god, his dark hair that was George's turns to a shade lighter, one of his brown eyes turn blue, four horns appear from the fluff of his hair, two on each side.
He wears navy blue shades, with a cloak that mirror the night sky, and butterflys start to appear and disappear, surrounding him.
"What?" Dream watches him still with anger, but he's wary, the last time he had seen HD like this was when they first had met.
HD wants to laugh, trying to bury the ache that continues to grow within his chest, but nothing coughs up. So he simply glares down at the mortal below him, reminding himself again again just how replaceable the human is, and ignoring how much pain it gives him to admit it.
"You thought of me as a friend? Dream please, he scoffs, "I am a god, and I don't have a need nor a want for friends."
"Then why did you befriend me?" Dream, despite knowing he can't win a fight with HD, stays strong in his stance, his fist clenched tight as if he was holding himself back.
"You forget yourself, you were the one who sought me out, you were the one who begged me to teach you the way of war, and you were the one who looked for a friend in me."
"You're a fucking god, you didn't need to listen a fifteen year old mortal." He says mortal like it left a disgusting taste in his mouth, mocking HD.
"Well, that day you found me, and I taught you everything you could learn, and I am not your friend, so this is where I tell you my goodbye."
He doesn't mean to say it, but he did, and it's done. Its not something a god can take back, it's trival to go back and forth, confused by ones own emotions was a human thing and he wasn't human.
"So that's fucking it huh? Well good fucking riddance, now you won't annoy me with your presence whenever you want something to entertain you, now you won't be in my head constantly lecturing me."
"Dream..." HD tells himself that Dream doesn't mean the words he says, he's only attacking and baring his teeth like a wild animal trying to defend himself, or so he hopes.
"No, we're fucking done, and I'm glad I know what I'm fighting for. My friends...my family," he corrects himself "while you're fucking fighting for...what was it? Bragging rights? To gloat to the rest of the gods? Be real HD, is that all what you're after?"
HD doesn't say a word to retaliate. Dream's right, he wants the people to talk, talk about how the great HD was the one to guide Dream, the most powerful, smartest of the lands into victory.
"You're just alone HD, completely alone..."
He wasn't, for a long part of his life he wasn't. He had someone who abandoned him because he couldn't see what HD saw, and for another moment after, for a much shorter time after, he had Dream.
HDs frown was still apparent, taking a step back, HD says his final words to the man he adored, "One day Dream, you'll understand, it won't be today, but one day you'll see and from today and onward, you have officially cut our bond."
He's afraid of what the human will become, touched by the divinity of himself, HD worries that the path Dream walks on now will be a path of destruction. It was all HD was good for, even XD had said it.
He was selfish, he won't lie. He knew that the moment he graced Dream with his presence that the boy would only fall into a darkness not even XD could lighten.
But he was alone, and so selfish.
Besides he was so sure that if he continued to guide Dream, nothing would go wrong, that the boy would be continue to strive into fame, even without the friends he has now, he was sure Dream could still be happy. But now...
"Goodbye Dream."
Only chaos would be left in his heart.
