Work Text:

Kenji is playing in a sandbox at the park closest to his home when he sees a girl shortly smaller than him approach.

His mother dropped him off for a while so she could get peace while working from home, and she looks at him through the window every now and then, just to see if he's doing alright.

As the girl walks towards him, or more like runs, he continues to play with his shovels, digging into the thick sand. He only looks up at her when she's standing right by him, looking down at what he's doing.

"Hello!" He says, giving her a bright smile. Kenji has always been quite a social child. He never has trouble making friends.

"Hi." She says, simply, sitting down next to him. She doesn't smile back, nor does she play with him. She continues to watch him play with the shovels in the sand, before grabbing one of her own.

He's about to ask her what her name is, but she speaks up before him. "Izumi Kyouka. Izumi Kyouka is my name." She pauses for a moment, seemingly thinking what to say next. "What's your name?" She ends up saying, finally looking up at him with dull eyes.

"My name is Kenji Miyazawa! It's nice to meet you." Kenji looks back at her, reaching to touch her ponytails, playing around with them. "Your hair is so soft! how do you do that? I'd love to have my hair this fluffy!" He looks at her, and sees her eyes spark up. "Thank you. Usually I just use conditioner after shampooing my hair." Kyouka looks back down at the sand, grabbing a shovel of her own.

She begins drawing cute little doodles in the sand, such as little kitties and bunnies (As much as she can, that is).

They sit there for hours on end, taking turns drawing. Eventually, it gets dark out, and the stars shine on them in the dark night. They both end up taking a break, deciding to stargaze instead.

"I've always loved stargazing," Kyouka started. "It's really relaxing. Keeps my mind off of things for a while." Kenji looks down at Kyouka, looking at her shining eyes. "Me too. I think it's really fun to do with friends especially!" Kenji loves the way she looks in the night, the stars in the sky shining down on her, showing the features of her face.

"Hey, Kyouka, have we met before? You seem familiar to me. Not to be rude or anything! I promise it isn't that!" Kenji whispers, to the point it almost seems like he's talking to himself. "I don't believe so. I.. don't remember much of my childhood. All I really know is that my parents were murdered, and then I was adopted by my mother Kouyou.. You do seem familiar. I promise I'm not offended." Kyouka looks at the stars, beginning to speak again. "But, if we did meet in the past, I guess it was fate, right?" Kyouka says, seemingly hopeful.

"Maybe it is.. Hey, Kyouka, what school do you go to? I haven't seen you around at all!" Kenji says, changing the subject of the conversation. "I go to Yokohama High. I just moved here recently, so that may be why you haven't seen me around.." She speaks lowly, almost as if she's embarrassed because of it. "I used to live in Tokyo. But, we decided to move here... and I don't really know why." Kenji smiles, happy that they go to the same school. "I go to that school too!" Just as he starts to say more, he hears someone shouting Kyouka's name in the distance.

"KYOUKA! C'MON, IT'S DINNER TIME!" He hears what seems to be her mother call from far away. Her yelling must've been drowned out by their talking. "Uhm, that's my call. I'll see you later though, I promise." She says, and walks off. Kenji waves her off with a smile and a goodbye, and only about 10 minutes after she leaves does he go into his own home and begins to play a random video game.
