Chapter 1: a mere tool for destruction
Chapter Text
The bar had a relatively warm lighting to it, the smell of alcohol lingering in the air. Chatter came from every corner of the establishment, though it wasn’t unbearingly loud.
Though he hadn’t always found the loudness of places like these comfortable, he wasn’t really arguing when it kept hidden the… more problematic customers.
“Be glad I even considered your invitation.” He hissed, shoving the other’s hand off of his shoulder, a scowl etching its way onto his face.
The demon only snickers, moving closer as a claw hovered dangerously over his visor. “Don’t be such a killjoy, Hyper! You’re always busy, why not join us for one party?” Subspace hums, tapping on the glass of Hyperlaser’s helmet. There's a slight tint to his face, though that’s to be expected after consuming copious amounts of alcohol.
The mercenary bats at the scientist’s hand, turning his head away to hope that his coworker would get the message and leave him alone. “I’m waiting outside. You’re all clearly fine here without me.” He huffs, rising from his seat and turning to walk away.
Subspace rolls his eye as he turns back to the bar counter, yawning as his attention turns back to the others who were actually lonely enough to accept his invitation. “Yeesh, that guy needs to loosen up a little.” The scientist snorts, loud enough that Hyperlaser can hear him.
It’s easy to ignore Subspace’s snide remarks. huffing in slight annoyance as his boots traveled silently up the stairs. Apparently, it was a pretty hidden place, the entrance being in a highly suspicious alleyway. But, hey, it’s Subspace. What did he expect?
Hyperlaser finally steps outside of the bar, glancing around in an attempt to deduce where he was exactly. It was somewhere in Crossroads, though in the shadows of the lively area. A place he didn’t quite frequent. And being the designated driver for these idiots meant that he’d have to stay sober while clumped up with… a handful of his drunk coworkers. Without knowing where he was.
Bless the genius invention that is technology. Without a GPS, he’s sure he’d be dead meat.
He sighs in irritation, running a hand down his visor as he moves to exit the alleyway. The glass of his helmet was already starting to fog, and a crack seemed to be more noticeable… Probably from his earlier phight.
His mood sours even more at the reminder. Even if they won, the aftermath was… less than ideal. He only briefly remembered half of the phighters participating. Maybe he really did hit his head harder than he thought.
On his team were Subspace, Biograft, Medkit, and… Another demon from Thieves Den. He’s never noticed the warrior before, besides the continued comments from Subspace about the fact that they both wore a mask. The mercenary was never really one to get to know his team, only caring about getting the job done. It was an annoying match, though that’s to be expected when you’re on a team with Sub-
Hyperlaser nearly yelps as he collides with something, staggering back with a knife drawn on instinct. He hisses as his head pounds slightly, glancing up. “Watch it, will you?” The mercenary grumbles, lowering the dagger to get a good look at whoever it was.
He nearly choked on his spit at the familiar face. Well, mask.
The familiar warrior is quick to apologize, seeming a bit dazed himself. His size is… slightly threatening, in Hyperlaser’s opinion. He pauses as if recognizing the mercenary as well. It’s easy to tell that he wasn’t sober. Not in the slightest.
They stared at each other in awkward silence before Hyperlaser huffed, moving to walk away.
The larger demon seems to snap out of his daze, raising his hand slightly in a way of telling him to stop. “Hold on a moment-“
Hyperlaser stops, quirking an eyebrow suspiciously at the warrior. “…What?”
“You’re Hyperlaser, correct?” He queries with a slight tilt of his head, his hand falling to rest on the hilt of his katana.
He stops himself from groaning in annoyance. “That’s me.” The mercenary monotones, sheathing his dagger in one quick movement. His hand moves to adjust the strap on his shoulder, which was attached to the casing of his railgun.
Katana’s gaze drifts from Hyperlaser’s helmet to his uniform, which adorned the symbol of Blackrock.
The mercenary doesn’t need to be a genius to recognize the brief hint of disgust that radiates off of the larger demon. Blackrock doesn’t have a very admirable reputation, after all.
“...You’re from Blackrock.” He huffs, a bit of disappointment leaking through into his voice as he turns away.
Hyperlaser doesn’t seem fazed by the other’s obvious disgust toward his faction. In fact, he only looks curious. “Correct. Why? You planning on visiting?”
The warrior pauses for a moment before sending a side glare to the mercenary. “Fear not, when the time comes, I personally will cleanse you all.” He threatens, the hand resting on his weapon gripping slightly before he makes his leave.
As heavy footsteps grow distant, Hyperlaser only lets out a slight ‘tch’. Why was that guy so aggressive when he hasn’t even done anything? With a grumble, he leans against the wall. It's only been a few minutes before he left the bar in hopes of peace and quiet outside.
This was going to be a long night.
“…Seriously? Just like that?” Subspace hums thoughtfully, staring at the roof of the car with a blank expression. His speech is slightly slurred, and Hyperlaser fears the experience he’ll have of having to care for a hung-over Subspace. Honestly, he doesn’t know why it always has to be him to take care of him.
Hyperlaser sighs, gloves firmly gripping the steering wheel. “Yeah.” He huffs, glancing over briefly to Subspace before returning his focus back to the road.
They’d finished dropping everyone else off, and it was just them two in the car. The road would definitely be pitch black if it weren’t for the lights decorating the houses around them. They were driving through the homes of the upper class, decorations draping the houses in an attempt for people to flaunt their wealth.
Thankfully, he didn’t have to deal with their blinding lights in the apartments near the labs. Unfortunately, having to live with Subspace was just as bad as having to deal with the constant boasting of the richer folk.
He glances back at the GPS, grumbling as he sees that they weren’t as close to getting home as he’d like. The government provided high-ranking members with housing located near their places of work, and he had no idea why they decided to group him with Subspace of all people. And being next to the lab just guaranteed that he’d have to hear every explosion they’d manage to brew up.
Subspace breaks the silence with a snort. “And you say that I’m the one making enemies.”
“There’s a difference. It’s like you’re actively trying to make an enemy of everybody. I didn’t actually do anything to him.” Hyperlaser hisses, sending Subspace an unimpressed glare through his helmet.
The scientist snickers. “Yikes. Might have something against our faction then, hm?”
“He’s really obsessed with this corruption stuff. Probably just some kind of delusional freak.” He huffs, slouching slightly as his helmet suddenly feels heavy.
The mercenary glances back at the scientist as he hears a snort. “Something funny?”
Subspace grins, getting comfortable in the car seat. “Thought you guys could get along with your… you know.” He laughs, making a circular motion around his face. His mask seemed to be discarded somewhere in the car, Hyperlaser not noticing that it was gone in the first place.
He grumbles, rolling his eyes at the other. “Lay it off already.” Hyperlaser sighs, posture straightening again.
They drive in silence for a while, and he glances back at the GPS. The house was only ten minutes away now.
His mouth opens to say something, but he stops as a small snore comes from his side. He glances over, seeing the scientist dead asleep, face pressed against the window as drool leaked from his agape mouth.
…He’s gonna have to clean that up.
Chapter 2: it was nice while it lasted, right?
Summary:
Honestly, the things he does for Subspace far outweigh the things he’s done for himself.
…Though it doesn’t take much to beat that.
Notes:

Chapter Text
Living in Blackrock all his life, Hyperlaser was no stranger to the cold.
…That fact never made it less dreadful, though.
The mercenary mumbled curses under his breath as he trudged on what he assumed was the sidewalk. Snow crunched under his boots, using his free hand to dust himself off as the other gripped onto a plastic bag.
He barely resists a sigh as the glass of his helmet becomes noticeably foggy.
It’s only a few minutes more as he sees the house in the distance.
The building stood at two stories, large windows taking up most of the exterior. Honestly, he didn’t see why it had so many windows. There wasn’t exactly a view to look at. Perhaps for the aesthetic? Blackrock did want their high command looking fancy and powerful.
Hyperlaser seems relieved as he feels his boots start to hit the wood of the porch. He huffs, hand waving in front of a scanner before he moves to turn the knob and push the door open as it beeps.
He’s almost immediately met with unbearably loud whining.
“Thank Illumina, what took you so long?!” Subspace hisses from his spot on the couch. The scientist was laid out on the furniture, gripping onto a dark bundle of fur. It meows in delight upon seeing the mercenary back.
He huffs, kicking the door closed as he slips out of his boots, heading to the kitchen. “If you’d just quit downing our coffee bean supply like a literal animal, I wouldn’t have had to walk all the way to the store to buy more.” Hyperlaser tosses the bag onto the counter, slipping his helmet off with the press of a few buttons. It pops off with a click, revealing his heavily scarred face and long white hair pulled into a messy ponytail.
That response only earns him a pout and even more whining. At this point, he just tunes it out. Honestly, he was starting to understand homophobes.
Hyperlaser stops his work as he feels something brush against his legs, glancing down. His eyes soften as he sees a familiar feline looking up at him curiously. He leans down to give her a scratch behind her ears.
“Hurry up already! I need to get back to my lab.” Subspace hisses, resting his head back against the couch.
The mercenary sighs, standing back up to continue his work with the coffee beans. “Not in that condition, you’re not.”
“Hah. Watch me.” The scientist snickers, shifting slightly on the couch.
Hyperlaser only groans in annoyance, fishing for his phone in his pocket before making a call.
“Wha-Hey! Don’t ignore me!” He hisses, trying and failing to get up from the couch.
The mercenary opens his mouth to reply but stops as the line on the other end clicks. “Hello? It’s Hyperlaser. I’m calling in sick for Sub-”
He’s cut off with a yelp as something slams into it.
“Phuck-Subspace, what the hell?!” Hyperlaser hisses, scrambling to get the rabid demon off of him while keeping a firm grip on his phone. There are panicked voices on the other end at the sudden interruption.
“Give-give me the phone!” Subspace chokes out after an elbow to the stomach, digging his claws into the uniform of the other. A swift kick in their scuffle ends up with the phone discarded on the kitchen floor.
“Get off of me- Holy shit! Are you biting me?!”
“...I’m very disappointed in the both of you.” The figure sighs exasperatedly, shaking their head in disapproval as they sank into their office chair with an unimpressed expression.
Subspace pouts, still adjusting the crinkles of his hastily put-on uniform. He doesn’t seem to be listening one bit.
Hyperlaser, on the other hand, stands formally, despite the rips in his uniform caused by a certain someone. His hands are folded behind his back, helmet fit on properly despite the rush.
“As high-ranking officers, you two should know that this behavior isn’t tolerated.” The demon scolds, seeming a bit more annoyed at Subspace’s lack of an attention span. With a sigh, they shift in their seat, making a sort of shooing motion as they massage the bridge of their nose. “God… Tripmine, you’re dismissed.”
The scientist snickers, giving Hyperlaser a small shove as he scampers out of the room, signaling his leave with a loud slam of the door.
Once the pest is out of sight, the gray demon sighs, rummaging through files at their desk until setting an envelope onto the counter, pushing it towards Hyperlaser, urging him to take a look.
The mercenary complies, taking the envelope carefully and opening it. He skims through the papers before extracting the image of a younger demon.
“Request from the higher-ups. I’d advise you to get it done quickly.” They huff, turning away from the other demon. “You’re dismissed.”
Hyperlaser nods, closing the envelope and turning to leave, twisting the knob and pushing the door open.
...This is going to be a long week.
Notes:
