Work Text:

Kayla stared blankly at Nico sneaking in through her window. I mean, it was normal at this point. She simply moved over on her bed for him to have a spot. He was quick to take off his shoes and collapse on the bed, laying his head on Kayla’s shoulder.

“Lonely?” She said while looking away from her phone. She placed her arm on his shoulders, pulling him closer. Nico just nodded and buried his face in her shoulder. “Wanna talk about it?” He shook his head.

At that, Kayla passed her arms around his waist and pulled him on her with a bit of struggle. She frowned as she felt a bit wet on her shoulder.

Was he crying?

It’s not that Nico never cried, that guy was the biggest drama queen (rivalled with her brother) she had ever met. But usually he wouldn’t cry when he just came over because he was lonely. Kayla decided against prodding since he said he didn’t want to talk about it and resorted to just petting his back.

After a few long minutes, Nico finally spoke up.

“My grandma died today.” He said, his voice breaking painfully. He had said it so quietly that Kayla was sure she would have missed it if wasn’t completely silent. She still didn’t say anything though, knowing Nico was going to keep going. “She meant so so much to me and I can’t even be there for her funeral. She was so proud when I left to join this team and now because of this godforsaken team I can’t even go to honour her death.” He sobbed quietly as he said everything, still aware he needed to be quiet.

Kayla was speechless. Nico had talked to her a lot about his grandma and Kayla knew she played a very important role in his childhood. She didn’t think any words were gonna help right now anyways so she kept quiet.

“I- I just can’t believe it. She was healthy and pretty damn young. She didn’t die of natural causes and that’s the absolute worst part. She got hit by a stupid drunk driver.” Nico sounded pretty damn pissed as he said that. It made sense that he was. She would be too if someone dear to her was killed like that.

“Was he at least arrested?” Kayla whispered, hoping he was. Nico shifted a bit in her hold.

“Yes, thankfully he’s going on trial for this.” He sighed. He was still lightly crying but it seemed to have calmed down a lot.

So Kayla stayed there, holding him for hours and distracting him with dumb conversations. They also had a promise to meet directly when the ice rink opened so they could practise together.

Nico left a while after, feeling a lot better.
