Summary:

The lonely feeling being alone. Until someone came and accompanied me.

Notes:

I would like to post more often of my short stories. I am merely just writing what I could write with my feelings. Hopefully you would enjoy one of my works. -Sel

Work Text:

Countless days and nights had passed, endlessly working.. and for what? I’ve lost all my purpose on my life. Being on top of a rooftop gives me the thought of jumping off this building. I climbed on the railing and stood upon the city I live in. The wind strongly blows my hair into the air. I felt the breeze coming from all over. Thinking it was time to do it. Until a certain person came by. I looked towards her, but she didn’t heed any attention to me. She leaned towards the railings and then looked at the setting sun over the city as I was staring into her reflection of her purple eyes.
“Hey.. nice to meet you here again.”
She didn’t look back at me. She just gave a smirk while staring into the sunset. I couldn’t jump off the building now as she was watching. I hopped down on the railing and leant back on it. We both stayed until the sky went dark. It was getting late and I had to leave her there.

The next day I went up to the rooftop again. She wasn’t there. I expected as much but I still felt a slight disappointment. I stared into the sun setting again as I am taking this last view before I die. But then, She came again. The same girl from yesterday. I don’t know what to say to her. I spent a few minutes gathering up the courage to ask.
“What’s your name?”
I was getting worried as she didn’t reply instantly. It was a few seconds of silence. Before she finally answered.
“Selene. What about yours?”
She said.
“Rosemary.” I nervously answered.
“I like it.” She replied.
We then both watched the sunset together again until the skies went dark. As I was about to leave she called out my name.
“Rosemary… come by tomorrow again.”
She stood watching the night sky. I nodded even though she didn’t see me nod. I went down the stairs and went back to sleep.

The following day, I was a little bit excited for today. I went up earlier than usual and to my surprise, she was already there.
“You’re up here early.” I said.
“I’ve been waiting for you. I would like to cherish this moment with you.” She said. She never looked away the sunset. I was surprised she said this! My heart skipped a beat when she said that to me. I was overjoyed in this very moment. I stood next to her and admired the sunset. We both looked towards it for a while. Then I looked towards her. She was smiling. These past days she didn’t smile until now. I was for once happy. Everything i’ve thought of ending it all is now void. The company she gave me was all I needed.

We both continue doing this for a few days. We both talked about our future plans and banter everyday. Until one day. She wasn’t there on the rooftop. I waited and waited for her to arrive but i was met with loneliness and the howling winds. The sky went dark without her.

For the next following week, I kept coming back to the roof, expecting her to be there. To watch the sunset with me. But every single day i lose hope. I decided to stay a bit longer even after the sunset. Then a message from her was sent. It was quite unusual for her to send a long message. It read:
“If you are reading this then… I’m gone. The burden of having to suffer an endless cycle of life and death, I decided to do it. I am deeply sorry that I didn’t tell you about all of this. Everything we talked about and laughed about was fun and I really want to talk with you more but… I was done. I hope your plans as the lead researcher would come true… as well as finding your purpose to live. Even if you aren’t enough to make me change my mind on doing this, At least i cherished my last moments with you. Please keep safe and live on Rosemary. This letter may be short and I’m not good at writing letters…”

…. She left me. I was overwhelmed with so many emotions. It made my heart ache that it hurts.
“D-don’t you know… how much you hurt me..?” I tried screaming, but it only lead to a fragile voice as I ended up crying on the floor. I used up my strength to climbed up the railing…
“Selene… I love you. I can’t do this without you. My life has zero purpose without you.”
I put one foot forward. And then the next…
The message sent has one more sentence at the very end:
“Rosemary… I love you, but you weren’t enough to keep me alive.”
