Work Text:
Will had noticed the unusually shaped apparatus sat in the corner of the room for a while now as it seemed to have blended into the background of the room as some sort of fancy piece of art. While obscure, Will wouldn't put it past Hannibal to possess such a contemporary piece if it held significance, perhaps it was a family heirloom. Either way, Will was certainly curious about the bizarre object.
That is how he found himself carefully moving the object away from the wall and pulling a chair up in front of it to inspect it. Without much thought, Will started to dust off the wood that had two metal rods poking out of it. As he moved to dust the horizontal rod and lift his hand off, a screeching noise that resembled that of a dying cat emitted from the apparatus.
Was this an instrument?
He knew Hannibal played the harpsichord as he had been serenaded more than once as he watched Hannibal's fingers dance around the keys. Will also received an in-depth history lesson about the instrument. So maybe it shouldn't surprise him that Hannibal plays more than one instrument but what the hell was this thing?
He lifted his hand once again over the horizontal rod and the volume slowly got louder. He was so invested in the ear-piercing racket he was creating that he hadn't noticed Hannibal come through the door.
"Having fun?"
Will flinched slightly at the monotone voice before turning around. Hannibal had a small smirk on his lips.
"What the hell even is this, Hannibal? It sounds like you have trapped an animal in it."
Hannibal walked over to Will and stood next to him, lifting his hands to the instrument and moving his fingers in a graceful motion, he created a sound that could only be described as the heavens themselves opening. Will sat almost starstruck until the psychiatrist started to explain.
"This is a Theremin. It was invented in 1921 by Russian professor Léon Theremin. It works by generating electromagnetic fields around the two antennae and you have to use precise hand and finger movements to change the pitch and create melodies."
Hannibal moved behind Will and lifted his hands and moved them around. For around five minutes you could only hear an unpleasant screeching sound like before, that was until that angelic noise came once again, only for a short moment but it was a victory to Will.
He turned around to Hannibal and found the blonde staring back at him with an endearing look in his eyes, something that always seemed to comfort, and ground Will.
"It may take you a while to learn but I'm sure Clara Rockmore would be proud."
Will didn't know who Clara Rockmore was, but he was happy that Hannibal had shared this obscure instrument with him and that he was slowly but surely learning more about the doctor.
