Summary:

A oneshot where you are a thief and Heizou chases you through Inazuma.

Work Text:

Y/N crouched low among the bushes, eyes darting across the ruined campsite. The treasure hoarders had been careless, leaving a trail of clues in their wake—scraps of pilfered goods littering the ground, trampled grass marking their path, gossip drifting on the wind about a ruined temple filled with ancient "treasure." 'More like priceless artifacts,' Y/N thought, 'capable of bestowing immense power upon their wielders.'

Slipping silently through the underbrush, Y/N followed the freshly overturned earth winding towards the ancient temple perched atop a nearby hill. Halting at the treeline, they surveyed the scene unfolding below.

Hoarders swarmed the area, manning a makeshift pulley system to haul heavy wooden crates up from the temple's shadowy depths. Armed guards paced the perimeter, weapons glinting in the fading sunlight. Y/N's pulse quickened as they weighed their limited options, fingers twitching with anticipation.

A distraction was in order. With a fluid motion, Y/N hurled an explosive puppet into the air. It sailed down the hill, a tiny messenger of chaos. Shouts erupted as the hoarders scrambled to engage this new threat. Seizing the opportunity, Y/N broke from cover and raced towards the temple on fleet feet, slipping inside just as the first explosions rocked the earth.

The musty darkness of the temple enveloped Y/N. Ancient stone stairs, slick with moss, led down into the heart of the structure. Emerging into a large chamber, Y/N's eyes widened at the sight of pillaged artifacts piled high. The wooden crates were nearly full - time was running short. A glint of gold caught Y/N's eye. The Ornate Kabuto, its surface intricately etched, rested atop a pillar. This was it, the legendary helm rumored to have been worn by an ancient samurai warrior. Wasting no time, Y/N grabbed the Kabuto and slid it into their pack, the mission accomplished. Now to make their escape.

Y/N darted through a hidden passage and out of the temple, only to freeze at the sound of a familiar voice behind them. Shocked that they had been followed, Y/N turned their head, catching a glimpse of their pursuer.

"I'd recognize that explosive puppet anywhere," came the smooth voice. Y/N's blood turned to ice as a lean, athletic man with maroon hair styled in a short mullet emerged from the trees, his bangs held back by a black headband. "The Night Viper of Inazuma, in the flesh. The seeds of my investigation have finally borne fruit."

Y/N suppressed a groan. The Tenryou Commission. Why now? Heart hammering, Y/N clutched the pack tighter. The Ornate Kabuto was finally in their grasp after endless trials. They could not fail now.

Without warning, Y/N broke into a desperate sprint, hurtling through the forest. Blades of grass lashed against their legs as they ran, the wind screamed in their ears, but sensory overload could not make them stop.

"It'll take more than that to shake me off!" the man called out with a laugh, giving chase with startling speed.

The silhouette of a village materialized on the horizon, beckoning Y/N like a mirage of salvation. Summoning every last ounce of energy, they sprinted desperately towards it, feet pounding against the earth.

The marketplace erupted into chaos as Y/N burst into the crowded square, weaving and darting frantically through throngs of shoppers. Stalls laden with wares blurred past in a rush of colors and noise. Y/N's shoulder clipped a display of embroidered scarves, sending them cascading to the dusty ground.

"My livelihood!" the merchant cried in dismay, scrambling to gather the silken fabrics now trampled underfoot. His shouts joined the chorus of other angry vendors as Y/N left overturned baskets and smashed pottery in their wake.

Panicked gasps rippled through the crowd. "It's a thief!" someone yelled. Y/N's pulse thundered in their ears, drowning out the accusations. 'Got to lose him,' they thought desperately.

Suddenly, a new voice cut through the clamor - smooth as silk yet sharp as steel. "Stop right there, evildoer!"

A chill ran down Y/N's spine. Heizou. It couldn't be... that meddlesome detective was on their trail? 'Why now, of all times? Leave me alone!'

Risking a glimpse backward, Y/N glimpsed Heizou barreling through the sea of shoppers, his gaze fixed on them like a hawk to its prey. His black headband whipped behind him as he wove between bodies with experienced ease.

Ignoring the cries of outrage as he shoved people aside, Heizou called out, "Your schemes end today, villain!"

Fueled by equal parts terror and adrenaline, Y/N pushed their burning muscles to the limit. Their vision tunneled as they sprinted down a narrow alley, the sounds of the marketplace fading behind them. Still, Heizou followed, as relentless as the tide.

Darting left, then right, Y/N scrambled for an escape route. But the winding backstreets only seemed to lead back to crowded squares full of obstacles. With Heizou on their heels, there was no time to hesitate. Spotting a gap between two stalls, Y/N made a sharp turn into an empty side street. Grabbing a rickety stack of pallets, they scrambled up in a burst of splinters to the rooftops.

With the agility of a prowling panther, Heizou swiftly followed, pulling himself onto the roof and breaking into a sprint. His footfalls barely made a sound as he closed in for the capture, muscles rippling beneath his robes.

Y/N's heart hammered wildly as they raced across the uneven rooftops, each footfall unsteady on the sea of tiles and thatch. Rotting planks creaked treacherously under their weight as they leaped over yawning gaps between buildings. Below, the village sprawled out in a maze of winding alleys and crowded squares.

Heizou pursued relentlessly, nimble as a cat on the precarious rooftop terrain. His footfalls barely disturbed the weathered shingles as he closed in on Y/N, robes billowing behind him.

Up ahead, a wide alleyway gaped between two houses. Y/N sprinted towards it and took the leap, arms windmilling through the empty air. For a breathless moment, they seemed suspended far above the hard ground. Then their feet slammed onto the opposite roof, knees buckling.

Behind them came Heizou's powerful leap, his lean form silhouetted against the sky. He landed in a crouch, wasting no time before springing after Y/N once more. In a flash, he grabbed their arm, tightening his grip around them. "Ha! Finally caught you."

Y/N thrashed against Heizou's iron grip, but his fingers only tightened further, digging into their arm like a vise.

"The case is closed!" Heizou cried, his words bursting forth in rapid succession. "After this electrifying chase across rooftops, the curtain falls on your freedom, evildoer."

Leaning in, Heizou's gaze bore into Y/N, sharp and scrutinizing. "The moment of truth," he murmured. "Let's see who lurks behind the mask of this criminal virtuoso..."

As recognition flashed in his eyes, Heizou recoiled as though physically struck. Stumbling back a step, his grip on Y/N's arm fell away.

"No... it cannot be," Heizou breathed, the unflappable detective for once stunned beyond words. He searched Y/N's face desperately, looking for some sign he was mistaken. "Y/N... my childhood friend?"

Heizou stared at Y/N, his old friend now revealed as the criminal he had been chasing. His mind drifted back to simpler times, when they were children playing in the streets.

"Do you remember when we used to buy fried tofu from Old Man Chen?" Heizou asked softly. "We'd pool our allowance money and rush to his food stall, mouths watering at the aroma." He gave a bittersweet smile. "You always let me have the bigger piece, even when you were hungry. Your kindness back then... how could you have strayed so far?" Heizou's gaze became distant with memory. "We made quite the pair, solving neighborhood mysteries and catching stray cats. Our dreams seemed so clear." His voice caught. "To think we now stand on opposite sides of justice..."

Shaking his head sadly, Heizou met Y/N's eyes. "I never wanted this for you, my friend. To live a life in the shadows, an enemy of the law." He saw Y/N open their mouth to speak, but Heizou held up a hand. "Please, say nothing. I do not know if my heart can bear to hear how you fell into disgrace."

Steeling himself, Heizou tightened his grip on Y/N's arm. "Duty compels me to bring you to justice. But I take no pleasure in this, believe me." With a pained look, he led Y/N forward. The dies had been cast.
