Work Text:
Miyeon, a third-year college student majoring in art, was a radiant presence on campus. She was really good at her studies, especially in art. Miyeon's creativity was a reflection of her soul, a means of expressing her innermost feelings and thoughts. Her creations captured emotions in a way that touched those who saw them. Through her talent and dedication, her friends would often ask her for advice. They saw her as both an expert and someone who wanted to help them succeed.
With a life that seemed to fit together seamlessly, she wasn't spoiled or selfish. She was down-to-earth and knew the value of working hard. She appreciated what she had and didn't take things for granted. Miyeon learned that success comes from effort, and she remembered this in everything she did. She got to where she was through hard work, which made everyone admire her.
Interestingly, despite having many admirers, Miyeon liked being alone. Unlike most, she didn't need constant company and was content in her own space.
But then came Shuhua.
She met her at a school fair back in her high school days. Amidst the crowd, Miyeon's eyes landed on Shuhua, a shy and cute girl who was standing next to Yuqi, a transfer student from China. Shuhua had a shy smile, but there was an intriguing energy about her that drew Miyeon in.
Shuhua's presence seemed to flip a switch within Miyeon that she didn't even know existed. Her usual preference for solitude took a backseat as she found herself drawn to Shuhua in a way that was unexplainable. Maybe it was how Shuhua talked to Yuqi or the sound of her laughter. Whatever it was, it was undeniable – Miyeon wanted to be around Shuhua.
Their friendship blossomed quickly, in which it is being comparable to Tom and Jerry, with moments of closeness and distance. Miyeon showed her fondness for Shuhua every day, giving her lots of attention and affection. Shuhua, though, would only push Miyeon away, expressing her discomfort. Even though Shuhua's reactions might have hurt a bit, Miyeon remained patient and understanding. Shuhua's discomfort didn't stop Miyeon from being a good friend. Instead, it made her want to support Shuhua even more.
Despite their differences, their friendship grew. It was unique and special, a mix of personalities that somehow fit perfectly. Even though Miyeon used to enjoy being alone, Shuhua became an exception.
As they became closer, Miyeon discovered more about Shuhua. Behind her shyness, Shuhua had interesting stories and dreams. Shuhua loved animals and wanted to be a vet. Shuhua's family had moved to South Korea from Taiwan before she was even born, and despite growing up in a culture different from her ancestry, Shuhua embraced her heritage while living her best in her new environment.
Miyeon also learned that Shuhua met Yuqi on the first day of high school, who had trouble speaking korean. Shuhua could speak mandarin chinese because her parents taught her and she used this to help Yuqi understand things. This made them become good friends. Shuhua translated for Yuqi and supported her. Their friendship flourished, with Shuhua's reserved nature complemented by Yuqi's outgoing personality.
Because Miyeon had to move for college, her time spent with Shuhua became less. She definitely longed for her usual daily habit of showing Shuhua a lot of affection. It left a gap in her heart, and she felt a mixture of loneliness and longing. Even though her days were busy with college, Miyeon's thoughts often drifted back to Shuhua, reminiscing about the times they spent laughing and the arguments that never seemed to end.
Despite the distance, Miyeon's fondness for Shuhua never faded. Every chance she got, she would make the journey to visit Shuhua during her free time. Those visits were like a ray of sunshine, bringing warmth and happiness to her.
As time passed, Miyeon's class schedule grew more demanding, making her interactions with Shuhua less frequent. The busyness of their academic lives had inevitably created a gap in their regular communication. It felt like their lives were pulling them in different directions.
With the start of a new academic year, Miyeon realized that Shuhua should now be a freshman, possibly attending college in Taiwan as she had thought. The idea of her dear friend being so far away tugged at Miyeon's heart. Yet, fate had an unexpected surprise in store for her.
Lost in her thoughts, Miyeon absentmindedly glanced around the library, the book in her hand completely forgotten. Her gaze then landed on a figure that seemed almost too good to be true – Shuhua. She couldn't believe her eyes and had to blink a few times to be sure. Shuhua was sitting there, focused on her studies and unaware of Miyeon's presence.
Filled with a mix of happiness and shock, Miyeon decided to surprise Shuhua. She wanted to catch her off guard, just like life had surprised her. Quietly, Miyeon got closer, her heart racing. She wanted to see Shuhua's reaction when she realized Miyeon was there.
With a mischievous grin and bubbling excitement, Miyeon exclaimed, "Boo!". Shuhua turned around, her hand instinctively ready to defend herself, but her eyes only widened in disbelief when she had locked eyes with Miyeon.
“Miyeon unnie! What are you doing here?” Shuhua practically jumped in her seat, her joy evident as she saw Miyeon.
"I should be asking you the same thing! I thought you’d be in Taiwan for college." Miyeon stated, settling down beside Shuhua.
“Well, plans changed. So, here I am!” Shuhua's grin was infectious, and Miyeon couldn’t take her eyes away from the younger girl in front of her. Seeing Shuhua up close filled her with happiness and relief. “What about you? Don’t tell me you’re following me here.” Shuhua accused.
Miyeon scoffed. “You dummy. Did you forget? This is the university I go to.” Without hesitation, Miyeon grabbed Shuhua's arm and pulled her into a tight hug. “I missed you so much, Shushu!”
Surprisingly, Shuhua hugged her back, wrapping her arms around Miyeon's waist. “I missed you too, unnie.”
Miyeon felt an overwhelming sense of joy because she never expected Shuhua and her to end up in the same university. It was a delightful surprise that brought her immense happiness. Miyeon held onto Shuhua for a while, not wanting to let go. It was an unexpected joy to have Shuhua in her arms without Shuhua pushing her away. It was a happiness she had never felt before, a contentment that came from being close to someone she cherished.
“Okay, unnie. That’s enough.” Shuhua's fingers tickled Miyeon's side, prompting her to let her go, and then playfully shoving her away.
“You haven’t changed one bit. I thought you were already warming up to me.” Miyeon teased.
“Never in a million dreams.” Shuhua rolled her eyes, her words accompanied by a playful grin. “Yuqi’s here too, by the way.”
“Oh, really? The three of us should catch up sometime!” Miyeon exclaimed, already feeling excited for this academic year now that she’s reunited with Shuhua and Yuqi.
“She’s a dance major, which reminds me,” Shuhua's eyes lit up, her gaze resembling a hopeful puppy as she looked at Miyeon, who was anticipating for her to continue, “Soojin goes here too!”
“Y-yeah, I’ve seen her around campus. How do you know?” Miyeon asked, a hint of curiosity lacing her voice.
“Yuqi asked me to accompany her at the auditions yesterday. She forced me to go with her by saying Soojin unnie is one of the dance captain. I didn’t believe her at first, but unnie, I saw her yesterday! We even talked a bit and she said she remembers me!” Shuhua's excitement was palpable, her words spilling out with a mix of surprise and enthusiasm. Miyeon couldn't help but notice how animated Shuhua had become, her voice reflecting her genuine happiness.
Miyeon’s expression turned a tad bitter when Soojin’s name was mentioned. How could she forget Soojin? She was Shuhua’s high school crush. Shuhua's eyes would always light up, and her smile would widen as she shared stories about Soojin's charm. Miyeon couldn't help but feel a subtle pang in her chest whenever Soojin's name came up, a feeling she wasn't quite sure how to name.
She had nothing against Soojin, really. Soojin was perfect. She’s beautiful, she dances really well, she’s overflowing with charisma, she’s kind, and she’s smart. And that was the problem. Miyeon couldn't deny her own insecurities and the slight pang in her chest knowing how Soojin's qualities could easily align with Shuhua's preferences.
As time passed, Shuhua's admiration for Soojin stayed strong. Miyeon observed from the sidelines, a mix of curiosity and something she couldn't quite understand. She found herself trying to figure out why Shuhua's focus on Soojin made her feel this way.
Miyeon realized that it was jealousy. It wasn't the usual envy that crushes can bring about; it was more intricate. It pointed to deeper emotions she hadn't fully explored.
Miyeon's internal struggle continued as she saw Shuhua talk about Soojin. They seemed oblivious to Miyeon’s internal conflict. Part of her wanted to confront her emotions, to understand them better. However, fear and uncertainty held her back, along with a worry of affecting their friendship.
Amid this emotional storm, Miyeon found comfort in their bond. She was willing to navigate her feelings and take her time to comprehend them fully. While Shuhua's crush remained a constant, Miyeon's journey of self-discovery persisted, guiding her towards understanding her own emotions and the evolving nature of her feelings.
Despite the hurt that simmered within her, Miyeon and Shuhua's friendship remained firm, and she treasured the moments they shared. Whatever it was that Miyeon was feeling, she was willing to set it all aside, prioritizing Shuhua's happiness above her own.
~
As September rushed in, a whirlwind of events followed. Among them, Shuhua and Soojin's bond had deepened, seen together practically every day since their conversation during Yuqi's audition. While the usual playful banter between Shuhua and Miyeon remained, Miyeon's heart couldn't help but ache as she noticed Shuhua pushing her away more and sharing heartfelt moments with Soojin. It was as if her feelings were becoming more apparent, even to herself.
With each passing moment that Shuhua spent with Soojin, Miyeon's feelings seemed to intensify, like a fire burning brighter within her. She couldn't ignore the growing ache in her chest, a sensation she had tried to dismiss before, but now found impossible to ignore.
Shuhua's infectious laughter, her genuine smiles, the way her eyes lit up when she was with Soojin – all these moments etched themselves into Miyeon's heart, causing her longing to deepen. The once-subtle pangs of jealousy now became undeniable, tugging at her every time she witnessed Shuhua and Soojin's closeness.
Miyeon had always been content being there for Shuhua, supporting her, and standing by her side. But now, she yearned for something more, something that tugged at her heartstrings with an intensity she had never experienced before. She found herself imagining scenarios where she could be the one to bring that sparkle to Shuhua's eyes, to be the recipient of her laughter and affection.
It was a constant battle within her, torn between her loyalty to their friendship and the undeniable desire that pulsed through her veins. She knew that Shuhua's heart belonged to Soojin, that the connection they shared was something special. And yet, a small part of Miyeon couldn't help but hope that maybe, just maybe, Shuhua might see her in a different light too.
As the days turned into weeks, Miyeon wrestled with her emotions in silence. She continued to support Shuhua, to be the dependable friend she had always been. But behind her smiles and laughter, a storm raged within her, a whirlwind of longing, jealousy, and a yearning she was still trying to define.
Amidst everything, Miyeon tried to understand the complicated emotions that had grown inside her heart. With every passing day, as Shuhua's bond with Soojin grew stronger, Miyeon's own feelings became more undeniable, a truth she had to confront, even if it meant facing the possibility of unrequited affection.
As Yuqi's birthday drew near, Shuhua felt a rush of excitement and determination. She wanted to create a special surprise for her friend, a celebration to remember. Shuhua reached out to Miyeon for assistance, and together they began to plan every detail.
The preparations were in full swing. Shuhua and Miyeon spent hours brainstorming ideas, from decorations to food, ensuring that every detail would contribute to the perfect surprise. Shuhua knew she needed help to keep Yuqi away from their apartment while they set up the surprise, and she turned to Soojin. With a bit of hesitation, Shuhua explained her plan to Soojin, who readily agreed to lend a hand.
As the clock ticked closer to the surprise, Shuhua's heart raced with anticipation. The apartment was ready, and Yuqi's friends were gathered to celebrate. Shuhua's nerves and excitement combined as she eagerly awaited the moment when she could reveal the surprise and witness the joy on Yuqi's face.
"Everyone! Soojin just texted me, they're already downstairs, so get to your positions!" Shuhua's voice brimmed with excitement as she turned off the lights and quickly took cover behind the couch, with Miyeon beside her.
The room buzzed with anticipation as the sound of keys in the doorknob reached their ears. Hearts raced as they took their places, ready to spring the surprise they had carefully planned.
And then, as the door opened, a chorus of voices erupted in unison, "Surprise!" Each person leaped out from their hiding spots, revealing the vibrant decorations, the gleaming "Happy Birthday" sign, the smiling faces of friends, and a spread of delicious food that awaited Yuqi's delight.
She covered her mouth with her hands, her eyes shining with emotion as she processed the beautiful surprise her friends had orchestrated just for her. The shock soon transformed into pure happiness, a feeling that filled the room and made the effort behind the surprise all the more worthwhile.
"Wow, you guys really got me good!" Yuqi exclaimed, her voice filled with genuine surprise and delight. She looked around at the decorations, the beaming faces of her friends, and the delicious spread of food. "I can't believe you all did this for me. Thank you so much!"
Soojin grinned and chimed in, "It's all thanks to Shuhua's brilliant plan."
Shuhua's cheeks tinged with a shy hue, and she glanced at Soojin with a mixture of gratitude and bashfulness. Miyeon, ever observant, couldn't help but notice the subtle change in Shuhua's demeanor when she was around Soojin. It was a shift in dynamic that hadn't escaped her notice, sparking a twinge of emotion she wasn't quite ready to define.
Breaking the moment, Yuqi stepped forward with a beaming smile, her gratitude shining in her eyes, "Shuhua, you're amazing! I can't believe you went through all this trouble just for me. Thank you so much!"
Shuhua's shyness melted into a bright smile as she responded, "Of course, Yuqi! I know you always feel homesick every time you celebrate your birthday. So, it’s only right to give you the best birthday party!" Yuqi then pulled her into a warm hug.
The party was in full swing, and Miyeon found herself seated alone on the couch, a feeling of isolation settling in. She barely knows anyone there except for her friends and the girl with silver hair, Soyeon, a music major who produced the music that the dance major was going to perform. Miyeon knew Soyeon was also friends with Soojin, creating a web of connections she wasn't quite a part of.
As her gaze occasionally wandered to Shuhua and Soojin engrossed in conversation in the kitchen, Miyeon couldn't shake off the pang of longing she felt deep within. The ease between them was undeniable, and the sound of Shuhua's laughter seemed to touch a place within Miyeon that she hadn't fully grasped.
"They look cute together, don't they?" Yuqi's voice brought Miyeon's attention back as she sat down beside her on the couch.
"Yeah, they do," Miyeon replied, her voice tinged with a mix of yearning. Swiftly changing the subject, not wanting Yuqi to notice her expression, she handed her a gift bag. "Oh uh, here. Happy Birthday, Yuqi."
Yuqi opened her gift and revealed an expensive headphones. "Wow, Miyeon! Is this really for me?"
"Yes. Shuhua told me you broke yours, so I bought you one since I don't really know what to get you."
Yuqi's joy was contagious as she thanked Miyeon and hugged her tightly. "Thank you, Miyeonnie!"
"Yuqiii! Look what I got you," another voice interrupted, and Minnie joined their circle.
"Aww, Minnie, you didn't have to," Yuqi said, a grateful smile on her lips. “But, thank you!”
"Who's your friend, Yuqi?" Minnie's curiosity directed her gaze to Miyeon.
"Oh, right. Minnie, this is Miyeon. Miyeon, this is Minnie."
"Hi, I'm Minnie." Minnie introduced, reaching her hand out for Miyeon to shake.
"Hi, I’m Miyeon. Nice to meet you." Miyeon bowed slightly, taking Minnie’s hand.
"Yuqi-ah, why didn't you tell me you had such a pretty friend like Miyeon, huh?"
"Yah, you find Miyeon pretty? You must really get your eyes checked." Yuqi teased, earning a glare from Miyeon.
"Of course! I've never seen one so beautiful in my entire life."
"Don't listen to her, she's only like this when she's drunk. Then she'll regret everything in the morning."
"I am not drunk!" Minnie complained.
"Yeah, whatever."
"So, can I have your number, Miyeon?"
"Sure."
Minnie then left the two, saying she had to get home early that night. Her departure left Miyeon alone with Yuqi again, her thoughts inevitably returning to the one who held a special place in her heart.
"Minnie's a great person actually. You should totally consider dating her."
"Hmm, I don't think so, Yuqi. I like someone else."
Shuhua.
She likes Shuhua.
In that moment, a door long shut cracked open, allowing the truth to seep out. It was the first time Miyeon's ever acknowledged the emotion that had been weighing on her for a considerable time and had been afraid of ever since reuniting with Shuhua. She had never admitted to anyone, even to herself, that she liked Shuhua. But facing the pressure of dating someone else didn't feel right to her. Although she didn't utter Shuhua’s name, Miyeon blurted out the words to Yuqi, with Shuhua in her mind.
As the party gradually died down and the guests began to leave, a cozy atmosphere settled within their apartment. Yuqi, always one to bring out the fun in any situation, proposed a game to keep the spirit alive. "Hey, how about we play a game before everyone heads out? I call it 'Spin the Bottle - Yuqi Version'!" she exclaimed with a mischievous grin.
Curiosity piqued, the remaining friends gathered in a circle on the living room floor, creating a space for the game. Yuqi's version of the classic game added a unique twist, which intrigued everyone. The rules were simple yet entertaining: whoever the bottle pointed to with both of its ends would be the chosen pair. They had to play rock-paper-scissors and whoever wins would be taking a sip from a drink, while the loser would do a dare.
The first spin landed on Yuqi, and the other bottle's end was pointed towards Soyeon. Yuqi, who lost the rock-paper-scissors had to do a dare. The dare was simple: she had to dance to a random song playing on her phone while everyone else cheered her on. As Yuqi danced with her characteristic flair, the room filled with cheers and laughter.
As the bottle spun once again, a combination of excitement and anticipation filled the room. When it finally came to a stop, it pointed at Shuhua on one end and Tzuyu on the other. Shuhua and Tzuyu exchanged competitive glances, their fingers poised for the quick game of chance. With a swift and synchronized movement, they both revealed their choices. Shuhua's paper covered Tzuyu's rock, making her the victor of the match.
As the attention focused on her, Shuhua's initial joy turned into hesitation. The realization hit her that she had won the challenge and was expected to take a drink, but Shuhua doesn’t drink.
Yuqi, sensing Shuhua's unease, chimed in. "Hey, Shu, it's totally okay if you don't want to drink. You can pass."
Shuhua hesitated, feeling torn between the expectations of the game and her own decision. She took a deep breath and glanced around the circle. "I'll give it a go," she finally said, her voice carrying a hint of uncertainty.
As Shuhua reached for the drink, her hand hesitated in mid-air, the weight of the situation sinking in. Beside her, Miyeon noticed her discomfort and acted without a second thought. She swiftly grabbed the drink and, with a determined expression, raised it to her lips. In one confident motion, Miyeon gulped down the drink in one go, her action drawing surprised gasps from the group. The room fell into a momentary hush, Shuhua's eyes widening as she processed Miyeon's unexpected move.
However, amidst the astonishment, Miyeon's discomfort became evident. Feeling an overwhelming urge to cough and a sensation as if she might vomit, Miyeon hastily excused herself and darted outside.
The fresh air hit her like a welcome relief as she tried to regain her composure. The intensity of the moment had caught her off guard, and she found herself struggling to suppress the urge to cough and steady her stomach. Lost in her thoughts and discomfort, she didn't notice that Yuqi had quietly followed her until a tap on her shoulder brought her back to reality.
"Miyeon, are you okay?" Yuqi's concerned voice cut through the night's air, her eyes reflecting her worry.
Miyeon managed a weak smile, her hand pressed to her chest as she nodded. "Yeah, just needed a moment. That drink went down... unexpectedly."
After moments of silence, Yuqi spoke. "You like Shuhua."
"What?" Miyeon’s eyes widened at what Yuqi said.
"You heard me."
"I don't know what you're talking about, Yuqi."
"Oh please, Miyeon. All of you might think I'm stupid, but I'm not that stupid."
"And what makes you think I like her?"
"Uh, hello? You obviously told me you have feelings for someone. And then you went and drank Shuhua's drink. You don't even drink!"
"Alright, fine. So what? Are you going to rat me out?"
"Why are you being so defensive? I'm not going to do that. I have no right to. But the truth is, I already suspected as much. I just needed you to confirm it."
"You knew?"
"I told you, I'm not that stupid. You're the one who's stupid, Miyeon."
"If you're worried that my feelings will come between Shuhua and Soojin, don’t be. Just like you, all I want for Shuhua is to be happy."
"Even if it means sacrificing your own happiness?"
The question hung in the air, an unspoken tension filling the space between them. Miyeon felt her heart tighten, the truth finally spoken aloud. She let out a sigh, her shoulders dropping as she admitted defeat. "Even at the expense of my own happiness. I just... I can't change how I feel."
Yuqi's expression softened, her gaze filled with compassion. "Miyeon, you deserve happiness too, you know. Don't forget that."
Tears welled up in Miyeon's eyes, emotions she had bottled up for so long finally coming to the surface. She looked at Yuqi, her friend's understanding touch warming her heart. "Thank you, Yuqi."

In the days following Yuqi's birthday party, Shuhua and Soojin officially became a couple. While Miyeon wasn't taken by surprise, a twinge of pain still tugged at her heart. Amidst the bittersweet feelings, Miyeon found it in herself to genuinely be happy for the newly formed couple. She held no resentment and genuinely wished them well.
Despite her support for Shuhua and Soojin's relationship, Miyeon made a decision to gradually distance herself from Shuhua, not out of bitterness or resentment, but out of respect for their new relationship. It wasn't a complete withdrawal – she wasn't ignoring Shuhua. Instead, she adjusted her behavior to be less clingy, allowing for more personal space. She felt that stepping back might help her cope with her own feelings and make room for Shuhua's new romance.
Interestingly, Soojin didn't mind Miyeon's previous clinginess toward Shuhua. She understood that their friendship was defined by that dynamic, and she saw no threat in it. However, Miyeon's intention was to provide the couple with the space they needed to nurture their connection without any interference. She wanted Shuhua to fully explore this new chapter of her life without any lingering sense of guilt or discomfort. While it wasn't always easy for Miyeon, her genuine care for Shuhua's well-being propelled her to take a step back.
One day, as the group gathered for a casual hangout, Shuhua couldn't help but notice Miyeon's absence from their usual activities. With a curious glint in her eyes, she turned to Miyeon and asked, "Hey, Miyeon unnie, I've noticed you haven't been around with the group as much lately. Everything okay?"
Miyeon forced a smile, a mixture of discomfort and guilt bubbling beneath the surface. "Yeah, Shu, I've just been really busy with some stuff lately, you know how it is."
Shuhua's expression shifted to one of concern. "Are you sure? You've always been a part of our hangouts, and we miss you when you're not there."
A small pang tugged at Miyeon's heart, hearing Shuhua's genuine worry. She looked down briefly, trying to compose herself before meeting Shuhua's gaze. "I appreciate that, Shuhua. I'm just dealing with a lot of things right now, but I'll be back soon."
Shuhua nodded, a faint smile on her lips. "Alright, just remember we're here for you whenever you're ready."
Miyeon managed to return the smile, though it didn't quite reach her eyes. "Thanks, Shu. I know that."
As the day continued, Miyeon couldn't shake off the weight of her lie. She was well aware that her reasons for distancing herself were more complex than just being busy. The truth was, every time she saw Shuhua and Soojin together, the feeling of longing intensified. It was a mixture of admiration for their happiness and a twinge of pain that she couldn't quite push away.
Miyeon's heart was a swirl of emotions – understanding Shuhua's concern and knowing that her lie was meant to protect herself from the ache of unrequited feelings. She wanted to be honest with Shuhua, to share her struggles, but the fear of complicating things and burdening her friend held her back.
So, for now, she continued to play her part, feigning busyness while wrestling with her emotions in private. As the days went by, Miyeon struggled to untangle the intricate web of emotions within her. She held onto the hope that creating some space between herself and the situation would offer her heart a chance to find relief amidst the inner turmoil.
As time went on, Miyeon found herself spending more time with Minnie. She was clear about her intentions, stating that she could only offer friendship. But Minnie, persistent and determined, seemed intent on proving herself, even if she knew that Miyeon's heart wasn't available for romantic attachment.
Despite Minnie's efforts, Miyeon's heart remained constant in its loyalty to one person – Shuhua. She appreciated Minnie's friendship and company, but the echoes of her unrequited feelings for Shuhua continued to resonate within her.
One day, as they sat together, engaged in casual conversation, Minnie's straightforward nature emerged. "Miyeon, can I ask you something?"
Miyeon nodded, curious about what Minnie had to say.
"It’s Shuhua, isn’t it? Shuhua’s the one you like?"
Miyeon was taken aback by Minnie's openness. She hadn't expected Minnie to address the topic so directly. Her eyes widened briefly before she composed herself. "I- I don't know what you're talking about."
Minnie continued, her voice gentle. "I've noticed things, Miyeon. The way you look at her, the way you light up when she's around. It's not hard to see."
Surprised and unsure how to respond, Miyeon met Minnie's gaze, sensing a mix of emotions in her eyes.
Minnie's tone softened as she spoke again, "You don't have to say anything if you're not ready. I just want you to know that I'm okay with it. I may want to be the one in your heart, but I also want you to be happy, Miyeon."
In that moment, Miyeon felt a pang of sadness for Minnie, recognizing that the pain of unrequited feelings was something they both shared, albeit for different individuals. She admired Minnie's honesty and kindness, and her heart ached for the shared understanding between them.
With a heavy yet grateful sigh, Miyeon finally spoke, "Thank you, Minnie. It means a lot to me. And I'm sorry if I've caused you any pain."
Minnie offered a small smile, her gaze warm. "We can't control our hearts, Miyeon. But we can choose how we handle our feelings."
~
Several weeks had slipped by, marked by Miyeon's deliberate efforts to maintain distance. However, one day, that distance was unexpectedly bridged when she found Shuhua waiting in her apartment. Shuhua's voice wavered with a hint of vulnerability as she began to share her feelings.
"You know, Miyeonnie, things have been weird with Soojin lately," Shuhua confessed, her gaze distant as if she was lost in her thoughts. "It's like she's there, but not really there. Physically present, but her mind seems preoccupied with other things."
Miyeon listened with a heavy heart, understanding the turmoil Shuhua was going through in her relationship.
"It's been tough, you know? We used to be so close, and now..." Shuhua's words trailed off, a sigh escaping her lips. "I just miss how it used to be, the way she used to look at me and make me feel."
Meeting Shuhua's gaze, Miyeon saw the genuine emotion in her friend's eyes. Despite her own struggles, she couldn't help but empathize with Shuhua's pain.
"I'm sorry you're going through this, Shu." Miyeon finally said, her voice gentle and sincere. "Relationships can be complicated, and it's normal to face challenges. But if you truly care about each other, you'll find a way to work things out."
Shuhua gave a faint smile, her eyes reflecting a mix of gratitude and uncertainty. "I hope so. It's just...hard to navigate sometimes."
Miyeon nodded in understanding. "You're strong, Shuhua. You'll figure it out."
As Shuhua opened up about her struggles, a subtle shift occurred within Miyeon. Despite her own feelings and the distance she had intentionally created, she found herself offering a listening ear and genuine support to the person she cared about deeply.
~
Miyeon found herself alone in a quiet room on campus, engrossed in painting for a project. The weight of the paint cans proved to be more challenging than she anticipated, and as she struggled to move them, she noticed Soojin walking along the hallway.
"Hey, need some help with those?" Soojin's voice was cool and composed, her eyes fixed on the paint cans.
Miyeon managed a thankful smile, "Yeah, that would be great."
Together, they carried the cans into the room. As Miyeon carefully set them down, she couldn't help but let her curiosity get the better of her.
"So, how are you and Shuhua doing?" Miyeon's voice was casual, but her eyes held a genuine interest.
Soojin paused for a moment, her expression unreadable. "We're okay."
"That's good to hear," Miyeon responded, but her gaze was thoughtful. "Just... take care of her, alright?"
Soojin's demeanor shifted, a flash of annoyance crossing her features. "What do you mean by that?"
Miyeon quickly realized that her choice of words might have been interpreted the wrong way. "No, I didn't mean it like that. I just meant..."
Soojin's voice was sharp, interrupting Miyeon's attempt to explain. "You think I don't know how to take care of her? You think I don't make her happy?"
"No, that's not what I meant at all!" Miyeon's voice was tinged with frustration. "I just care about Shuhua, and I want to make sure she's okay."
Soojin's gaze bore into Miyeon's, a mixture of anger and hurt evident in her eyes. "Shuhua and I have our own relationship. You don't need to worry about it."
Miyeon's heart sank as she realized her attempt to express her feelings had backfired. "I'm sorry, Soojin. I didn't mean to overstep or offend you. I just want what's best for Shuhua."
Soojin's expression softened slightly, but the hurt was still present. "I understand that, unnie. But I know what's best for Shuhua, and I don't need anyone's advice. So just... mind your own business, Miyeon unnie."
With that, Soojin turned and walked away, leaving Miyeon alone in the room, her heart heavy with a mix of guilt, frustration, and a lingering sense of sadness.
Later that day, as the sun began to dip below the horizon, Miyeon was surprised to find Shuhua waiting for her at her apartment. The atmosphere felt tense, a brewing storm that hung heavily in the air.
"Can we talk?" Shuhua's voice was tight, her eyes fixed on Miyeon with a mixture of frustration and hurt.
Miyeon nodded and gestured for Shuhua to come inside. They sat down on the couch, the air heavy with unspoken words.
Once inside, Shuhua wasted no time. "Did you talk to Soojin?"
Miyeon's heart sank, the weight of the earlier conversation with Soojin still fresh in her mind. "What do you mean?"
"Soojin told me you spoke to her, about our problems."
Miyeon's eyes widened in surprise. "Shuhua, I-"
"You had no right to tell her about our problems. That was between me and her."
"Shuhua, I didn't-"
"Don't lie, Miyeon unnie! Soojin was clearly upset about something you said."
"I didn't tell her anything about your problems. I only gave her advice," Miyeon explained urgently. "I didn't share anything personal."
Shuhua's expression remained stern, her voice edged with accusation. "She said you were giving her advice she didn't like. You shouldn't have gotten involved."
"I was only trying to help," Miyeon protested, her voice tinged with frustration.
Shuhua's eyes blazed with accusation. "So you went behind my back and played the hero again, huh? Is that what you do, Miyeon unnie? Interfere in people's lives and play the savior?"
Miyeon's heart ached at Shuhua's words. "No, that's not what I was trying to do."
"Seems like it to me," Shuhua retorted. "You always want to be the one to fix everything, don't you?"
"No, it's not like that," Miyeon retorted, her emotions flaring. "I don't want to be the hero, Shuhua. I just care about you and Soojin. I thought I was giving good advice."
Shuhua's eyes blazed with anger, her voice sharp. "Well, I don't need your help. I don't need you to save me or fix my problems."
"Shu, I'm sorry if I overstepped. I didn't mean to make things worse." Miyeon's heart ached at the rift that was forming between them. "Shuhua, I'm not trying to-"
"I don't wanna talk to you ever again." Shuhua cut her off, her voice icy.
Miyeon felt a lump in her throat, her own frustration mingling with a sense of helplessness. "Shuhua-"
But Shuhua turned on her heel and walked away, leaving Miyeon dumbfounded, the weight of their strained conversation heavy on her shoulders. As the door closed behind Shuhua, Miyeon felt her emotions well up, tears spilling down her cheeks. She wrapped her arms around herself, hugging tightly as her heart ached with the weight of the situation.
A feeling of déjà vu washed over Miyeon. She remembered a similar situation from their high school days when they had fought, and Shuhua had used nearly the same words to distance herself. It was like an old wound reopening, and Miyeon couldn't shake the pain that accompanied it.
"Shuhua, I'm sorry okay? But, I only did it to protect you!" Miyeon's voice was tinged with desperation.
"Really, unnie? I specifically told you not to meddle with it anymore. Felix has never bothered me since that day he pushed me." Shuhua's voice wavered, a mix of frustration and hurt lacing her words.
"I know that. But, do you really expect me to just sit here and keep quiet, knowing what Felix did to you? Shuhua, he forced you to like him and it ended up with you on the ground and a scratch on your knee. I just know he'll do it again, Shu. He's just waiting for the right time. That's why I had to tell my mom about it."
"You don't understand, unnie. I don't want any of it, I-"
"I really am sorry, Shu. I don't know what I'm so sorry for, but I'm sorry. And you know I just can't let this one slide. So, why? Why are you being like this? Does Felix have something against you?"
"No, he doesn't, and he wasn't bothering me anymore, so it was fine. Everything was fine, but you ruined it unnie! You ruined it by telling your mom. And now he's being expelled. But, I couldn't care less about him getting expelled. It's the attention that I despise so much! Everything was peaceful since the day he stopped bothering me, and I could never be happier. But now, I get stares from all of the students and it's killing me, Miyeon unnie. I purposely get late to classes just so I could avoid their stares in the hallway. I was the victim, but I felt miserable day by day ever since everyone knew about what happened!"
"Shuhua, I- I didn't know."
"Of course you didn't. And you did it to protect me? No, unnie. You just want to be the hero in everyone's eyes, that's why you did it, right? You're never sorry."
"That’s not why I did it. I truly care about you and I really really am sorry, Shu."
"I don't wanna talk to you ever again."
Miyeon's heart ached as conflicting emotions churned within her – the urge to justify herself and the pang of understanding that her actions had inadvertently hurt Shuhua even more. Determined to make amends, she found herself buying Shuhua's favorite banana milk and snacks every day, placing them on her desk before she arrived at their shared classroom, a plea for forgiveness that she hoped Shuhua would one day accept.
It was an all too familiar feeling for Miyeon. But unlike that moment, she wasn't going to apologize. She pondered over her recent actions – supporting Shuhua, expressing her worries, and suggesting that Soojin take care of her. She questioned why she should apologize for that. She hadn't done anything wrong. Miyeon had chosen to put Shuhua's happiness above her own desires.
So, why apologize for caring about Shuhua? Miyeon's heart still ached, yet she stood her ground. She refused to let guilt cloud her actions. She knew her intentions were driven by genuine concern.
~
As days turned into weeks, the silence between Miyeon and Shuhua remained unbroken. In the big campus, Miyeon had become skilled at avoiding Shuhua. Whenever her gaze met Shuhua's in the hallways or near the classrooms, she would skillfully divert her eyes and change her route. It had become a habit, a way to shield herself from the emotions that surfaced whenever she saw Shuhua with Soojin.
Miyeon had created a sort of protective bubble around herself, a way to prevent any uncomfortable encounters. It wasn't that Miyeon wanted to keep her distance forever; rather, she was attempting to heal the wounds that had been inflicted upon her heart. This distancing gave Miyeon a sense of control, a way to guard herself from the lingering feelings.
One day, however, her carefully crafted plan was disrupted. She was walking towards her next class, her gaze fixed on her phone, when she collided with someone. Looking up in surprise, her heart sank as she found herself face to face with Shuhua.
"Oh, sorry!" Shuhua exclaimed, her eyes widening in recognition.
"It's fine," Miyeon mumbled, avoiding Shuhua's gaze and stepping back.
They stood there in an awkward silence, the tension between them noticeable. Miyeon's mind raced for something to say, to break the uncomfortable atmosphere.
"Uh- how have you been, unnie?" Shuhua finally asked, her voice soft.
"I've been... good. Busy with classes and all." Miyeon's gaze remained distant, her words distant as well.
Shuhua nodded, her lips curving into a faint smile. "Yeah, me too.”
Another awkward silence settled between them. Miyeon's heart raced, torn between the desire to break the ice and the instinct to maintain her self-imposed distance.
"Well, I should get going," Miyeon said abruptly, her voice lacking its usual warmth.
"Yeah, of course," Shuhua's response was nonchalant, but her eyes held a hint of something unspoken.
As they went their separate ways, Miyeon's steps felt heavier than before. The encounter had stirred something within her, a mixture of longing, frustration, and a tinge of regret. Yet, she remained determined to keep her distance, even if it meant moments like these became a part of their new normal.
Their tension lingered even in the presence of their friends. Miyeon's heart felt heavy with the weight of unspoken words and unresolved emotions. She couldn't help but steal glances at Shuhua and Soojin, their happiness a constant reminder of what she felt she had lost.
During one gathering with their friend group, Yuqi noticed the change in Miyeon. "Hey, Miyeon, you've been awfully quiet tonight. Is everything okay?"
Miyeon forced a smile, her gaze shifting to Shuhua and Soojin. "Yeah, just got a lot on my mind. You know, project stuff."
Yuqi looked at her skeptically but didn't press further, letting Miyeon's explanation slide. Miyeon's eyes briefly locked with Shuhua's, a mixture of longing and pain in her gaze before she quickly averted her eyes.
Miyeon found herself reflecting on the situation. Initially, the lack of communication hurt, but as days turned into weeks, she realized that maybe this distance was a form of self-preservation. It was her way of building walls to shield her heart from further pain. Yet, even in this self-imposed distance, she knew she would always be there for Shuhua, silently supporting her from the sidelines.
Deep inside, Miyeon understood that stepping back was a way to heal and gather strength. The journey was difficult, but Miyeon remained determined to navigate it.
~
Weeks passed, each day carrying a weight that felt too heavy for Miyeon to bear. The news of Soojin and Shuhua's breakup spread like wildfire across campus. Miyeon's heart ached knowing that Shuhua was hurting, yet she held firm in her mission to maintain her distance.
Then, one day, as Miyeon arrived home, she discovered a familiar sight on her doorstep – a bottle of banana milk and a bag of her favorite snacks. Confusion and surprise swirled within her as she picked them up, and then, from the corner of her eye, she noticed movement. Shuhua, with a sheepish smile, revealed herself from her hiding spot.
"Hey," Shuhua greeted softly, her gaze a mix of apprehension and hope.
"Shuhua?" Miyeon's voice carried a mixture of surprise and uncertainty.
"Yeah, it's me," Shuhua chuckled lightly, taking a step closer.
Miyeon's guard remained intact, even as her heart began to race. "What are you doing here?"
"I brought these for you," Shuhua gestured to the snacks and banana milk. "As an apology."
Miyeon's emotions churned, caught between the pain of their recent rift and the desire to reconnect. "Apology for what?"
"For how things have been between us," Shuhua sighed. "I'm sorry for everything, unnie. I miss you. I shouldn’t have said those words to you."
A moment of silence hung between them, both grappling with their emotions. "I'm sorry too, Shuhua. I didn't mean for things to end up like this." Miyeon's heart ached at the vulnerability in Shuhua's eyes. "I'm sorry about you and Soojin. I know how much you cared about her."
Shuhua's gaze dropped, and a heavy silence settled between them. "It was... inevitable. We both realized it wasn't working anymore."
Miyeon nodded, her heart going out to Shuhua. But even as they talked, she kept her walls up, her past experiences teaching her to be cautious.
As they continued their conversation, Miyeon found herself wrestling with conflicting emotions. She wanted to believe in the possibility of repairing their friendship, but she also feared the pain that vulnerability might bring. She listened to Shuhua's words, offered her own apologies, but still kept her guard up.
~
On a quiet evening, Miyeon found herself standing outside Shuhua's apartment door. The weight of their unresolved issues hung in the air, but something forced her to seek Shuhua out. As she knocked, the door swung open, revealing a slightly unsteady Shuhua, holding an almost empty shot glass.
"Miyeon!" Shuhua's eyes lit up, her voice a tad slurred. "Come in!"
Miyeon couldn't help but chuckle at the sight. "You're already tipsy from just one shot?"
Shuhua pouted. "The taste is awful."
"You're such a lightweight," Miyeon teased.
Shuhua rolled her eyes playfully. "Am not!"
As they settled into the living room, Shuhua's slightly unfocused gaze landed on Miyeon. "Hey, you know something I've been wondering? Why did you drink my drink that night at Yuqi's party? You hate alcohol as much as I do."
Miyeon sighed, her eyes flickering away for a moment. "It's... complicated, Shu."
Shuhua leaned back on the couch, her expression becoming more serious. "Tell me."
Miyeon let out a sigh. "I don't know, Shu. Maybe I just wanted to prove a point. It's not a big deal."
Shuhua's eyes remained locked on Miyeon, as if she was trying to decipher something. "Right."
Miyeon then decided to change the topic. "Are you drinking because of Soojin?"
Shuhua's reaction was swift and sharp. "Not everything is about Soojin, Miyeon unnie."
"I didn't mean it that way, Shuhua. I just-"
"You just what?" Shuhua's tone was sharper than intended, her frustration evident.
Miyeon sighed, realizing she had touched a nerve. "I just wanted to make sure you're okay. That's all."
Shuhua ran a hand through her hair, frustration evident in her movements. "I'm sorry. I'm just-I'm not in a good place right now."
Miyeon's heart ached for Shuhua, wanting to offer comfort but unsure of how to do so. "You should probably get some rest, Shu. It's not a good idea to be drinking alone."
Shuhua looked at her, her eyes unreadable for a moment. "Yeah, maybe you're right."
As Shuhua stood up and headed towards her room, she paused at the doorway and glanced back at Miyeon. There was something in her expression – a mixture of emotions that Miyeon couldn't quite decipher. With a nod, Shuhua disappeared into her room, leaving Miyeon standing in the quiet apartment, her heart heavy with a sense of longing and uncertainty.
~
As the days rolled on, Miyeon's efforts to maintain distance between herself and Shuhua grew more apparent. Shuhua's efforts to mend their relationship were met with brief replies and evasive explanations, leading to a subtle yet undeniable strain between them. Miyeon found herself torn between wanting to shield herself from potential pain and the lingering connection she shared with Shuhua.
Conversations grew awkward, their exchanges becoming short-lived and marked by uncomfortable pauses. Shuhua's attempts to spend time together were met with polite refusals, as Miyeon carefully constructed reasons to maintain a distance. Their connection that had once been strong now seemed to lessen, leaving them distinctly apart from their previous closeness.
Whenever their friend group gathered, Miyeon couldn't help stealing glances at Shuhua, only to find Shuhua's gaze already fixed on her. There was a evident sense of longing in those exchanges, an unspoken desire to bridge the emotional gap that had formed between them.
Days turned into weeks, and Shuhua's exhaustion became evident. Yuqi's concern finally prompted her to ask, her voice laced with worry. "Shuhua, you look really tired lately. Are you getting enough rest?"
Shuhua offered a tired smile, brushing off Yuqi's concern. "Oh, you know, just busy with classes and stuff."
Yuqi's eyes narrowed, clearly unconvinced. "You practically live in the campus library. Don't overwork yourself."
Miyeon sat there in silence, her heart aching as she observed the conversation between her friends. She couldn't bring herself to speak up, to offer her perspective or show concern. Instead, she kept her emotions hidden, allowing the distance to grow between her and Shuhua, all the while keeping an eye on the toll it was taking on the girl she cared for.
One night, Miyeon found herself in the campus library as well, surrounded by the soft glow of lamplight. She wasn't expecting to see Shuhua there, hunched over a pile of books. Miyeon hesitated for a moment before approaching her.
"Hey," Miyeon's voice was gentle, breaking the silence that enveloped them.
Shuhua looked up, her eyes reflecting a mixture of surprise and weariness. "Hey, Miyeon unnie."
"Are you alright?" Miyeon asked, concern lacing her words.
Shuhua looked up, her eyes slightly bloodshot from lack of sleep. "Yeah, I'm fine," she replied, her voice carrying a weariness that didn't go unnoticed by Miyeon.
"You don't look fine," Miyeon countered gently. "You've been pushing yourself too hard. Why don't you let me take you home so you can get some rest?"
Shuhua's gaze met Miyeon's, and for a moment, they held each other's eyes. It was as if unspoken words lingered between them, words that neither of them had been willing to voice.
Finally, Shuhua sighed and nodded. "Alright, unnie. Thanks."
~
Miyeon continued her pattern of distancing herself from Shuhua. It was a painful cycle she had created, a way to protect herself from the potential pain that came with closeness. Each time she shared a moment with Shuhua, she retreated afterward, building the walls higher around her heart.
Shuhua couldn't help but notice the pattern, the way Miyeon would draw near only to slip away again, and it was becoming too much for her to ignore.
She confronted Miyeon, her voice carrying a mix of frustration and hurt. "Miyeon unnie, why are you avoiding me so much?"
Caught off guard by Shuhua's directness, Miyeon stuttered, "W-what do you mean? You know I have a lot on my plate right now, Shuhua."
Shuhua wasn't buying it. "Bullshit."
Miyeon's defenses rose. "Okay. If I'm not so busy, what is it then?"
Frustration lined Shuhua's expression. "I don't know, you tell me."
"I don't think I have anything to tell you," Miyeon retorted. "Do you have something to tell me? Because if not, then, I really should go-"
"I just- I-" Shuhua's voice was a mix of uncertainty and vulnerability.
"You what, Shuhua?" Miyeon pressed, her tone edging on impatience.
Shuhua's frustration seemed to melt into vulnerability as she struggled to articulate her feelings. "I just miss you… so much."
Miyeon's heart softened at Shuhua's words, caught off guard by the depth of her feelings. "But, I've always been right here."
Shuhua's gaze met hers, eyes swimming with unspoken emotions. "No, unnie. I- you just-you've changed."
"I didn't, Shuhua. You know how much I still care about you."
Shuhua's voice was tinged with a mix of sadness and frustration. "No, I know unnie. But, you know what I meant by you've changed."
Miyeon's heart clenched at Shuhua's words, a mixture of emotions swirling within her. She felt a pang of sadness that Shuhua had perceived her actions that way, as if she had grown distant deliberately. The hurt in Shuhua's voice stung, and Miyeon realized that her attempts to protect herself had unknowingly caused Shuhua pain as well.
"Isn't that what you want?" Miyeon's voice wavered with a mix of resignation and hurt. "I mean, you've always pushed me away. I'm only giving you the space that you longed for. I know how you've been so suffocated with my presence ever since we met.” Miyeon sighed and continued, “But, I still care about you, Shuhua. Don't ever forget that and don't hesitate to talk to me still when you have problems, okay?"
Her words held a mixture of longing and reassurance, a plea for Shuhua to understand that her actions were not a reflection of her feelings. Miyeon's heart ached as she yearned for their bond to mend, but she also knew that she needed to protect herself, even if it meant hurting in the process.
With a heavy sigh, Miyeon turned to leave, her heart aching as she walked away. She couldn't ignore the tears that welled in Shuhua's eyes as she stood there, vulnerable and exposed. A part of her wanted to go back, to wrap her arms around Shuhua and offer comfort, but another part reminded her that the distance was a form of protection—for both of them. And so, with a heavy heart, Miyeon kept walking, leaving Shuhua behind as the silence lingered in the space between them.
~
Enjoying a rare moment of solitude in her apartment, Miyeon was startled by the abrupt and forceful knocking on her front door. Her surprise deepened as she saw Yuqi barging in without waiting for an invitation. Yuqi's demeanor was urgent, her expression a mixture of frustration and concern.
"What the fuck happened, Miyeon?" Yuqi's words were sharp and laced with exasperation.
"Uh, I'm not sure I follow, Yuqi." Miyeon responded cautiously, her brow furrowing in confusion as she tried to process Yuqi's agitation.
"There you go again, pretending you know nothing!"
Miyeon was taken aback by Yuqi's sudden outburst, her voice raised in frustration.
"Except that I don't really know what you're talking about? And why are you shouting? What are you so mad about, Yuqi?" Miyeon's voice held a hint of irritation.
"Shuhua! I'm talking about Shuhua! What the hell happened between you two?" Yuqi's frustration was palpable, her voice raised even higher.
"We just... talked."
"Really? You just talked, huh? Then why is Shuhua being like that? She wasn't even that miserable during her break up with Soojin."
Miyeon sighed, her shoulders slumping. "I honestly have no idea."
"That's because you don't talk to her anymore. You used to know everything about her and how she's doing. You're supposed to be the first person people ask about Shuhua's whereabouts, not me."
A mixture of guilt and defensiveness welled up in Miyeon's chest. "You really wanna know?”
“Tell me.” Yuqi challenged.
"I'm trying to protect myself now, Yuqi.” Miyeon's voice trembled with a mixture of vulnerability and determination. “She only pushed me away every time I try to show her affection. I was patient and I understood her, although it hurt me so much. She became Soojin's girlfriend? I supported her. I swallowed my feelings, wanting nothing more than Shuhua's happiness, even if it meant suppressing my own. And don't get me wrong, Yuqi, I still do. I still fucking want to prioritize her happiness more than anything else. But, it's just become too overwhelming for me to bear. I'm reaching a point where I can't ignore the pain anymore, where I can't keep ignoring my own heart. So this time, I'm choosing myself. I'm choosing to protect my own heart, to shield it from any more hurt whenever I'm with Shuhua. It's not that I don't care, it's that I can't keep sacrificing my own well-being for the sake of hers." As she spoke, Miyeon's voice cracked, revealing the depth of her pain and the struggle she had been silently enduring.
The weight of her confession hung in the air, and Miyeon could feel her eyes starting to water. It was a vulnerability she had kept hidden for so long, a truth she had only shared with herself until now. The inner conflict she had been fighting with was intense, like a storm of emotions breaking free at last.
Yuqi's expression softened as she processed Miyeon's words. "But, why not just confess to her?"
Miyeon let out a bitter laugh. "It's not that easy."
"True.” Yuqi shrugged. “But, I mean, that's what led me to be with Soyeon?"
"You know your situation is not as complicated as mine, right?"
"Just fucking confess."
Miyeon's gaze hardened, her patience wearing thin. "Okay, get out now, Yuqi."
"You can't avoid this forever, Miyeon. If I could lock you two up in a closet, I would." Yuqi remarked with a mixture of exasperation and a hint of playfulness.
After Yuqi's departure, Miyeon found herself wrestling with a mix of emotions provoked by their conversation. Her apartment seemed simultaneously constricting and empty, mirroring the inner struggle she was experiencing. She sank onto her couch, her face buried in her hands, letting out a sigh filled with frustration. The burden of her concealed affection for Shuhua seemed to have grown even heavier, leaving her torn between wanting to free herself from her self-imposed restraints and the fear of the consequences that might follow. The memory of Yuqi's visit replayed in her mind—the confrontation that had shattered the fragile balance she had tried to maintain. She had distanced herself from Shuhua to guard her own heart, but now that choice seemed to be crumbling.
Miyeon's thoughts swirled, memories of their past colliding with the pain of the present. She remembered the closeness they once shared, the late-night talks, the shared laughter. They had been so connected, and now they were so distant. How had things gotten so complicated?
Shuhua's hurt expression haunted Miyeon. She had wanted to protect herself, but in doing so, she had hurt someone she deeply cared about. She wished they could go back to the way things were, but the gap between them felt impossible.
The apartment was silent, and as Miyeon wiped away her tears, she stared out of the window, lost in her thoughts. The future was uncertain, and the ache in her chest was a constant reminder of their broken bond. She yearned for things to be different, for a chance to mend what was broken. But for now, all she had were regrets and a longing for the past.
~
In the days that followed, the signs of exhaustion were etched beneath Shuhua's eyes, evidence of the sleepless nights she had endured. Miyeon's heart ached with worry, but she couldn't find the courage to approach Shuhua. She longed to reach out, to offer comfort, but the fear of reopening old wounds held her back.
Then one day, as Miyeon went about her routine, her phone buzzed with a text from Yuqi. The words sent a jolt of concern through her veins—Yuqi had mentioned that Shuhua had collapsed. Panic surged within her, and without a second thought, Miyeon rushed to Shuhua's apartment.
Upon arrival, Miyeon was greeted by the sight of Shuhua in the kitchen, holding a water bottle, looking surprisingly well. Confusion mixed with relief as their eyes met.
"Miyeon unnie? What are you doing here?" Shuhua asked, her voice tinged with surprise.
"Yuqi, you told me she collapsed?" Miyeon's frustration was evident.
A mischievous glint danced in Yuqi's eyes as she offered a nonchalant response. "Oh, did I say collapsed? Whoops, must have been a typographical error, my bad." Miyeon's glare deepened at the realization that she had been fooled. "Well, I'll leave you two then," Yuqi added before swiftly leaving the apartment.
As the two were left alone, Shuhua's expression turned solemn. "What was that about, unnie?"
Miyeon sighed, the irritation in her tone mixing with concern. "Yuqi told me you collapsed, so I rushed here."
"That dummy.” Shuhua chuckled. “But, really? You came here right away?" Shuhua's lips curved into a small smile, a blend of gratitude and other unspoken emotions that caught Miyeon's attention. As they settled onto the couch, maintaining a noticeable distance between them, the tension in the room began to ease.
"Yeah, why wouldn't I?" Miyeon's response was laced with a mix of annoyance and relief. Her gaze remained fixed on Shuhua, trying to decipher the emotions that flitted across her face.
With a soft exhale, Shuhua continued, her tone carrying a hint of regret. "I'm sorry, unnie."
Miyeon looked at her, surprise evident in her eyes. "Sorry? For what, Shuhua?"
Shuhua's gaze dropped to her hands as she continued, her voice a mixture of regret and self-blame. "For not confiding in you about my problems. I know you told me I could talk to you whenever I needed to, but I didn't. I thought- I thought you hated me already."
Miyeon's gaze softened, understanding Shuhua's hesitation. “Hate you? I could never hate you, Shu.”
"Why? I’ve hurt you so many times, and I felt like you were just pretending to be nice so I wouldn't get hurt more. I thought you were avoiding me because you couldn't stand being around me."
"Shuhua, you've got it all wrong. I could never hate you. I've been hurt, yes, but that doesn't mean that I hate you. And I’m so sorry too, Shu." Miyeon's expression softened, realization dawning on her. "When Yuqi sent that text, I was just- worried. Especially with how tired you've been looking lately."
Shuhua's shoulders sagged with relief, and she let out a breath she hadn't realized she was holding. "I'm sorry for making you worry. But there's something I need to say, unnie."
Miyeon's brows furrowed in concern. "What is it?"
"I just- I was dealing with some emotions I didn't quite understand. But since that day we talked, it all made sense to me."
"What made sense?"
"That I-," Shuhua hesitated, her fingers curling into nervous fists, "that when I started to understand those emotions better, I realized that I'm starting to like you, Miyeon unnie. More than just a friend. I'm sorry. I know I shouldn't, but it just kind of happened."
Miyeon's heart skipped a beat, her emotions whirling as Shuhua's confession sank in. "Why do you think you shouldn't like me, Shu?"
Shuhua's gaze dropped to her lap, her fingers fidgeting with the fabric of her dress. "Because you're a great person, unnie. You've been there for me since day one, but I've done nothing to acknowledge all the things you did for me. But, I have always been grateful for you. I just didn't know how to tell or show you. I felt like I didn't deserve someone like you, and it would be unfair to like you when I haven't been the best friend to you. Plus, I know you wouldn't like me back."
"Shuhua, you dummy. You really are clueless, are you?” Miyeon's voice held a mixture of fond exasperation and affectionate amusement.
“What? Why?” Shuhua's brow furrowed in confusion, her gaze lifting to meet Miyeon’s eyes.
Miyeon's heart raced as she leaned in, her lips gently pressing against Shuhua's in a tender kiss. The sensation was electrifying, a rush of emotions flooding her as she kissed Shuhua. Shuhua's eyes widened in shock at the unexpected touch, her breath catching in her throat.
“I've liked you for a very long time, Shuhua."
"Y-you did?" Shuhua's voice quivered with disbelief, her heart racing in her chest.
"Yes! And I still do, I still fucking do, Shuhua.” Miyeon's words were filled with both sincerity and a touch of exasperation.
Shuhua's eyes widened in stunned surprise, her lips parting slightly as she processed Miyeon's confession. "Wha- I-I had no idea, unnie."
"Well, now you do. I like you so much that it hurts, Shu." Miyeon's voice quivered with sincerity, her heart pounding in her chest.
A mixture of disbelief and overwhelming happiness spread across Shuhua's face. Miyeon found herself grappling with her own disbelief, after months of pining and longing. She had resigned herself to the idea that her feelings might never be reciprocated, and yet here was Shuhua, admitting her own affection. It felt too good to be true, a dream she had scarcely allowed herself to entertain. As their eyes met, a silent understanding passed between them, a promise of a new beginning that neither of them could have anticipated.
As the world seemed to pause around them, Shuhua leaned in, and Miyeon’s heart pounding in her chest. Their lips met in a soft, hesitant kiss. It was a gentle exploration, the touch of Shuhua's lips against her own igniting a spark that had long been smoldering. Miyeon's fingertips brushed against Shuhua's cheek, her touch tender as she deepened the kiss ever so slightly.
Shuhua's lips were incredibly soft, a sensation she had longed to experience. The kiss felt both dreamlike and exhilarating, a confirmation of their emotions finally being shared. As their lips met, the world around them seemed to fade, leaving only the two of them, finally embracing the connection they had been avoiding for so long.
As they pulled away to catch their breath, Shuhua's voice trembled with a mix of vulnerability and relief. "I like you, too, Miyeon unnie." The weight of their unspoken feelings had finally been lifted, replaced by a newfound connection that they had been denying for far too long.

As Miyeon and Shuhua strolled hand in hand across the campus, their fingers intertwined, a sense of contentment settled over them. The sun cast a warm glow over everything, a reflection of the newfound happiness that had blossomed between them. Their laughter and easy conversation filled the air, a complete contrast to the tension and unspoken emotions that had plagued their interactions before.
As they turned a corner, they suddenly found themselves face to face with Yuqi and Soyeon, who seemed to have just emerged from a nearby building.
Yuqi wore a sly grin that could only mean trouble. "Well, well, well, what do we have here?" Yuqi's tone was lighthearted, but her eyes held a mischievous glint.
Miyeon blushed, but she couldn't help but smile at the sight of her friend. "Hey, Yuqi. Hey, Soyeon."
"Hey, you two." Soyeon greeted them back.
Yuqi playfully raised an eyebrow. "Oh, 'hey Yuqi' is all I get? Not even a thank you for being the ultimate matchmaker?" Soyeon chuckled at her girlfriend’s antics, offering a friendly smile to Miyeon and Shuhua.
Shuhua chuckled, leaning into Miyeon's side. "Okay, Yuqi. Thank you for your meddling ways."
Yuqi feigned offense, placing a hand over her heart. "Meddling? Me? I'm just a helpful friend, that's all."
Miyeon chimed in with a laugh. "Helpful is an understatement."
Yuqi grinned, pointing playfully at Miyeon. "Let's be honest, if it weren't for my little push, you two would probably still be cluelessly pining away, especially you, Miyeon."
Shuhua squeezed Miyeon's hand, her smile soft. "Yuqi's right, unnie. We probably wouldn't have admitted our feelings if she didn't intervene."
Miyeon rolled her eyes, but there was a fondness in her gaze. "Fine, fine. Thank you, Yuqi. Happy now?"
"Very!” Yuqi clapped her hands together. "Oh, the sacrifices I make for the sake of my friends' love lives. It's enough to make me gag." Yuqi feigned a dramatic sigh, placing a hand on her chest.
The group shared a hearty laugh, their friendship and lightheartedness a reflection of their strong bond. As Yuqi continued poking fun at the new couple, Miyeon and Shuhua exchanged a knowing look, their fingers still intertwined, appreciating the newfound openness between them and the shared journey that had brought them here.
