Work Text:
The New York dating scene is somehow lacklustre at best. The men are attractive sure but not one of them stirs anything in Spencer like Liam did. They definitely don’t treat him like Liam did. Liam was a bit too Hetero passing for his taste some days, but he always treated Spencer like he was worth something. The guys he’s gone out with lately treat him like he’s only worth one night and nothing more. He misses Liam he realizes. Hence why in the beginning of five months after their break up, Spencer decides it’s time to take Liam back.
Spencer starts out with reconnaissance, look he knows Liam would take him back in an instant it’s practically a done deal. However, he wants to be prepared, he wants to know what Liam’s been up to. Except when he queues up Liam’s instagram he can’t find it. The same happens for his Facebook, and Snapchat. A setback but that’s fine. Liam wasn’t really a social media person anyways. He probably deleted them after the break up.
It was mostly Spencer’s pushing that he got them in the first place. No matter he can just contact Liam directly. Spencer still had his number saved. It wouldn’t be hard. A quick text or two and Liam would be back. Except that’s not what’s happening
To : Liam Hey how are you?
The text goes unanswered. And so a Week later Spencer tries again.
To: Liam It’s been a while. How’s everything going?
That text goes similarly unanswered. Spencer is sufficiently confused. He’s not blocked he knows that. But Liam should still be seeing his texts. Maybe Liam deleted his number? Maybe the direct approach is needed.
To Liam: It’s Spencer. I’ve been thinking about us a lot lately. I think we should talk. If you have time let me know. We can go to that little coffee shop you like.
Spencer hated that place. It was serious coffee and not enough latte art. But Liam loved getting coffee there. He always said it was about the coffee and getting to expand his horizons with different blends. So Spencer deigning to go there should have been at least enough bait for Liam to answer. Except it wasn’t, he never hears back from Liam.
The thing is Spencer figured he’d run into Liam eventually. Sure, New York is a huge city but they ran in the same friend circle and they spent their formative years together. That means developing the same kind of routine and places frequented. So Spencer starts spending more time in places he and Liam used to frequent. When that wasn’t working he started frequenting places that Liam used to go to alone because it was too “not enough” for him. That doesn’t work either. It’s been almost six months since their break up and Spencer has not seen or heard hide or hair of Liam. It’s like he vanished.
Eventually Spencer tamps down his ego and just decides to show up at Liam’s friends place. It’ll be romantic and spontaneous and Liam will be so happy. Except he’s not there, his friend tells him he found his own place like 2 or so months after they broke up. And they aren’t sure where he went. They tell him, He should try Liam’s friend Alex. And he would if he knew where was Alex.
So Spencer tries a new plan. What was is it his mom always told him?
“You’ll find what you’re looking for once you stop looking and let the universe work”
So Spencer waits. He starts going out again, not on dates. He keeps an eye out Liam. But Liam never materializes. And he’s almost given up hope until he learns that one of their mutual friends is having a party. Liam’s definitely gotta go to that.
Spencer is late. He’s so fucking late. The party started two hours ago and he’s way past fashionably late at this point. He should have never agreed to finish that presentation before he left. But he gets there.
“Oh my god. I’m so sorry. I got held up at work,” Spencer explained in a rush.
“Babes, it’s fine you didn’t miss much. And honestly you got to miss one of Jason’s longwinded speeches so count yourself lucky,” Aidan explained comfortingly.
“Is this everyone?” Spencer probed discreetly. Honestly he just wanted to know if Liam was here.
“Yeah that’s everyone,” Aidan answered Disappointment flooded Spencer, Liam wasn’t coming. Spencer wanted to ask what’s up with Liam without being to obvious, but he wasn’t sure how. Thankfully Aidan saved him from having to ask.
“You just missed Liam though. He came by for a bit,”
“Dude did you see who he showed up with,” interjected a voice behind him. Liam came with someone? A new boyfriend? Who? Spencer wanted to yell.
“Omg I saw that. I still can’t believe the boy bagged the Percy Okonjo,”
Why does that name sound familiar? He swore he heard it somewhere before but he for the life of him couldn’t place where. Was it someone he knew? He would just have to bite the bullet and ask he guessed.
“Sorry who’s Percy Okonjo?” Aidan and the interloper turned to stare at him with horror.
“Percy Okonjo? Like the billionaire philanthropist? The one building those LGBT youth shelters with what’s his name again?”
“Henry Fox-Mountchristen-Diaz. I think? Total babe”
A billionaire?? A generous billionaire at that. They’ve only been broken up a little over six months. How in gods name did that happen? Spencer thought dejectedly
“Shame they couldn’t stay. Something about them having prior plans with Henry’s sister. Heard she was flying in from London. It sounds-“
Spencer couldn’t listen anymore. He bid them a quick goodbye and bolted out of the apartment. He needed to drown his sorrows pronto. Spencer raced down soho turning into the first promising bar he saw. He probably should have been paying better attention, because no sooner had he gotten his drink he could hear a very familiar deep laughter. Spinning around there he saw Liam surrounded by some one the most attractive people he ever saw. And in his lap was a beautiful flamboyantly dressed man in gorgeous fushia suit.
“Hey bartender can I get 3 Shiners, a cosmo, a vodka martini ,2 margaritas, and a lemonade please?” Said a voice next to Spencer. Spencer turned towards the voice only to come face to face with Alex.
“Oh fuck Spencer! How you’ve been dude?” Alex exclaimed
“I’ve been good just hanging,” Spencer answered with false cheer. “What are you doing here?”
“Oh! Henry’s sister’s in town so we’re painting the town red,” Alex explained.
Alex turned to the bar to grab his drinks. “thank you. Here. Keep it. And please keep the tab open.”
Alex turned back from grabbing his drinks and faced Spencer, “Anyway I gotta take this back before they riot. If you’re alone do you want to join us.” Alex asked hesitantly.
Spencer was definitely not joining. He had a thick skin but not that thick. “Nah. This is my last drink. I’m about to head out. Thank you though,” he answered in the most nonchalant manner he could.
“Okay. I’m gonna head back. I can see June glaring at me from here. Bye dude,” Alex said and walked off back to his group.
Spencer didn’t answer him. He turned and quickly downed his drink. With a slam of his glass he started towards the door. Before he left he gave one last look back at the lively group he realized that it answered his question. It was never his flamboyance that was the riff. And he guesses Liam doesn’t miss him at all.
