Your Friendly Neighbourhood Deku

Summary:

Izuku’s dream was to be a hero. He still wanted to help people, even though he knew that superheroes didn't actually exist. He knew his dream was impossible. And even if superheroes did exist, who was he kidding? Someone like him couldn't possibly be a hero. He was too weak.

So when a field trip to a genetics laboratory ends with him getting bitten by a radioactive spider and he wakes up with newfound powers, he realises his dreams can finally come true. Well, not really, though vigilantism does have a nice ring to it.

Donning a mask Izuku must now be the hero that his city needs. Juggling his school life and secret identity as a vigilante is hard enough, so what happens when his childhood friend, whom he's lost touch with, comes back to town?

or,

in which Izuku is Spider-Man and is really bad at keeping secrets, Katsuki is not having it, Shinsou is tired, and Aizawa deserves a raise.

Chapter 1: Chapter 1

Chapter Text

Izuku

By some miracle, Izuku finds himself arriving a whole twenty minutes before the first bell, which is frankly astonishing given how he handles his sleep schedule and don’t even get him started on his punctuality. Everyone knows that he’s late for almost everything. Even puberty is taking its sweet time with him!

It’s bad enough being this scrawny, so imagine what still having a baby face in high school is like! he looks like he could be blown away by the wind! This makes Izuku the perfect victim for Kevin and his band of lackeys to bully and push around. But in all seriousness, the number of times he’s been shoved into a locker this year is not funny, not to mention the beatings he’s had to survive.

Izuku walked past his locker since they didn’t actually have any classes that day. The first years were being taken to a laboratory as an educational field trip, so they had a half day at school. Izuku has been looking forward to this trip since they were told about it at the beginning of the semester. Science and technology had always been an interest of Izuku’s, so getting to visit such a technologically advanced lab was a dream come true for him.

As he was walking to class, someone suddenly yanked him back by grabbing his hoodie. Izuku yelped as he was jerked back.

“Hey, ass wipe! Can’t you hear me calling you?” Kevin said, sounding annoyed.

“Sorry, I didn’t hea-” Izuku said or tried to say before being rudely cut off.

“Shut up; I need you to actually be useful for once and do something for me.”

“What do you need now?” Izuku asks with the slightest hint of attitude before snatching his hood out of Kevin’s fist.

“Do my summer homework for me.” he says.

“What?! No way, I already have enough of that for myself!” he tells him trying to stick up for himself for once. he’s feeling dangerously confident today.

“Do I look like I’m asking? If you know what’s good for you, then you’ll do it, loser.” He says his voice is full of malice, and then he walks away.

Izuku would be upset, but he wasn’t physically attacked, so he’s going to take that as a win.

At around eight thirty, Izuku and his class finally get on the bus to take them to a genetics lab owned by a well-known scientist. Most of the class was grumbling about how boring this was going to be, but Izuku was pretty excited, to say the least.

He didn’t really have any friends in school, so he just ended up zoning out for most of the bus ride. Once we finally reached the laboratory, everyone got off the bus to marvel at the huge skyscraper in front of them.

Izuku was practically buzzing from excitement. He couldn’t stop thinking of all the things he’d get to learn here! Maybe he could finally prove some of his theories correct! he pulled out his trusty old notebook and a pencil, already prepared to take as many notes as humanly possible. This kind of visit is expensive, so he won’t have another chance to come to such an advanced place again, so he’s planning on absorbing as much information as he can on this one visit.

“Stop muttering, you freak!” a mocking voice called from the group of teenagers behind him (it’s probably Kevin).

Izuku mumbles an awkward ‘sorry’ and stumbles his way into the building. He entered the building with his mouth agape, completely immersed in the huge futuristic lobby. It’s like he’s entered an alternate universe!

He slowly walks forward as he takes in the tall ceiling and minimalistic furniture. His eyes land on the sleek and high-tech main desk with a digital check-in and the totally next-level clear glass touchscreen walls that most likely provide guests with information about this lab. He quickly pulled out his phone, took a quick picture, and sent it to Hitoshi.

Midoriya Izuku: sent an attachment

Shinso Hitoshi: Wow, that looks so unreal!

Shinso Hitoshi: If I didn’t know where you were going I would have totally thought this was from a movie or something.

Midoriya Izuku: omg I know right (͡≧ ͜ʖ ͡≦)

Midoriya Izuku: I can’t believe I’m actually here! It’s like a dream!

Shinso Hitoshi: you’re totally geeking out aren’t you?

Midoriya Izuku: welll duhh!! This is basically my dream workplace. How could I not!?

Shinso Hitoshi: I can practically see you vibrating from excitement lmao

Midoriya Izuku: ok firstly: rude!!

Midoriya Izuku: and secondly I gotta go before I get left behind (=ಠᆽಠ=)

Shinso Hitoshi: lol

Shinso Hitoshi: I’ll call you later then

Midoriya Izuku: byee

He puts his phone back in his pocket and speeds up a bit to catch up with the rest of the class. At the main desk, they’re introduced to their tour guide, who seems to be a fairly tall woman with brown hair. She looks to be about 35.

“Hello, everyone! My name is Hana, and I’ll be your guide for this tour. So if you have any questions, please feel free to ask!” She says enthusiastically.

One of the boys whistled from the back, “Then can I have your number, sweetheart?”

Izuku cringed internally, thinking, Who says that stuff anymore?

Their guide Hana seemed smart (‘she works here, of course she’s smart’), so she ignored the rude comment and carried on with starting the tour. She took them over to the unusually large elevator, scanned her card (probably a safety measure), and pressed the button, taking them up to the seventh floor, where the tour was supposed to start.

The elevator doors open up, and the whole floor is filled to the brim with long white countertops that are integrated with state-of-the-art technology and automated robotics for testing. There are multiple scientists wearing lab coats running around holding test tubes and other lab apparatus. But what catches Izuku’s eye is the big iron door at the end of the room that seems to be guarded by what looks to be biometric scans and automatic alarms.

he raised his hand politely and asked “Um, Miss Hana, what’s through that door?”

She looks back at the door. ‘Oh, um, a new project is taking place there, but it’s not part of the tour, so we won’t be viewing it,” she said, and she carried on with the tour.

They were about an hour and a half into the tour by now, and the trip was coming to an end. They were taken to the ninth floor, where they had set up an exhibition for them, and they were told that they could roam around on their own for the last thirty minutes.

Izuku still couldn’t get his mind off what was behind that iron door. His mind kept drifting back there for most of the tour (though he still took extensive notes of everything else, mind you).

But since they were left alone and given free roam, his feet couldn’t help but drag him back in the direction of that door. He saw a janitor getting into the elevator, so he quickly slipped in with him and went back to the seventh floor.

Izuku gets off the elevator and sees that the iron door has been left slightly ajar. But as he gets closer to the door, he hesitates for a few moments.

‘I definitely should not be doing this’ he thinks to himself.

‘But the door is left open… It’s like the universe is fueling my curiosity! Just a peak can’t hurt!’ he reasons with himself.

Izuku finally gave in to his thirst for knowledge and walked into the room. The room was fairly dark and filled with what looked to be large cylinders. He took a closer look at the cylinders and found that they housed multiple and frankly gross-looking spiders!

“Spiders?” Looking at them, you can tell that these aren’t ordinary spiders; they’ve got some kind of hard, colourful shell on them. They look almost like robots. But they are living organisms at the same time.

He walked over to one of the few counters in the centre of the room. On top of the counter was a much smaller glass box with a rather flimsy-looking lid. There were a few more of the same spiders in them, but they looked slightly different from the rest. He leaned down to take a closer look.

“What are you doing here?” a stern voice called out from behind Izuku. He practically jumps out of his skin and jerks backwards against the glass box, causing the lid to shift slightly.

“Oh, um, oh, I got separated from my class. We came here on a field trip?” Izuku explained quickly.

“Well, you’re not supposed to be here. This place is off limits” the guy says, not looking pleased by his presence.

“Oh sorry.. I’ll leave and catch up with my class then. So sorry!” he quickly makes his way out of the room.

‘I totally didn’t see him coming. Well, that’s what I get for snooping around, I guess…’ he thinks to himself sheepishly.

Izuku also didn’t see the spider on his backpack that had escaped from the glass box.

He headed back to where his class was and saw them all getting ready to leave. They take the elevator back down. Once they reached the lobby, Miss Hana started giving her ending speech and thanked us for coming here.

Izuku tunes out the speech and pulls out his phone to text Hitoshi and tell him about how he got caught snooping around.

Midoriya Izuku: YOU WON’T BELIEVE WHAT JUST HAPPENED!!!

Midoriya Izuku: OMG I’M SO EMBARRASSED!!

Midoriya Izuku: (˃ᆺ˂)

Miss Hana finishes her speech, and they start walking back to the bus. As they walked back to the bus, Izuku felt a sharp sting on his neck. Like a bee sting, but when he brought his hand up to swat at said bee, he only pulled his hand back to see a spider. It was the spider from the lab.

His eyes widened in silent panic.

‘Crap! Crap! Crap! Am I going to die?! Should I go back inside and tell someone?’ He thought to himself as his mind raced with all the terrible things that could happen. ‘Why did I have to let my curiosity get the better of me!?’

He felt a shoulder bump into him harshly, “Move idiot.”

Izuku ignored the taunt and got onto the bus.

About fifteen minutes into their journey back, he started feeling incredibly dizzy. A few minutes later, the nausea and fever kicked in as well.

He thought to himself, ‘This is it…I’m going to die to a damn spider, aren’t I…?’ He would have voiced his disappointment if his brain hadn’t felt that foggy.

He thought about how Hitoshi would react to the news of his death and felt a wave of guilt wash over him.

‘I’m sorry Hitoshi… I’m sorry, I’m such an idiot…’

Those were Izuku’s last thoughts before he fell asleep on the bus.

Everything after that was a blur to him. The bus reached school, and since they didn’t have any other classes, everyone had just gone home. Izuku doesn’t remember how he got home but he must have taken the subway and headed straight to bed.

Izuku woke up to one of his many alarms blaring into his years. The high-pitched sound made the throbbing in his head so much worse that it felt like it was going to explode. He slowly opens his eyes. The sunlight coming through his unclosed curtain felt almost blinding. He sat up feeling like absolute crap. Izuku looked over at his phone and turned off his ungodly alarm. He checked the time and saw that it was 7:15 in the morning.

“Shit. I’m going to be late for school!” he cursed, rushing out of bed and running to his bathroom.

He picked up his toothbrush and went to get his toothpaste, but when he tried to let go of them, he found out that they were both stuck to his hand. Izuku tried to shake them off, but it was like they were glued to his hand! He gave them one more shake, and they finally fell off.

“What the hell?” he muttered to himself in confusion.

He finally brushed his teeth and glanced up at the mirror, noticing some stubble on his face. To his surprise, he looked significantly taller and more muscular than before. Izuku lifted his shirt to find lean abs under it. In disbelief, he looked back up at the mirror again noticing that his face looked more chiselled as well having lost a good portion of his baby fat.

“Did I finally hit puberty?”

Overwhelmed, he slammed open his cabinet to pull out his razor, and the cabinet door broke off its hinges into his hand.

He dropped his now broken cabinet door on the floor in complete horror and stared at it for a second before deciding to ignore it and continued to shave his face while repeating a mantra in his mind that went, ‘This is all a dream. It’s not real. This is all a dream.’

The teen walked back to his room to change into a baggy sweatshirt and a pair of cargo pants to hide his new muscles so people don’t get suspicious.

He opened his phone to find multiple messages from a very concerned Hitoshi

Midoriya Izuku: I AM SO SORRY

Midoriya Izuku: I came home and felt really sick so I went to bed.

Midoriya Izuku: ( T ʖ̯ T)

Midoriya Izuku: I’ll call you today

Midoriya Izuku: don’t be mad pls (.﹒︣︿﹒︣.)

Izuku walked into the kitchen and grabbed a piece of toast from the toaster very carefully; he didn’t want to accidentally break that as well; since that would be expensive to replace. He rushed out of his apartment with the piece of toast in his mouth deciding he didn’t have enough time to eat in peace. As he is ran down the stairs he heard a voice call out his name and stopped to look back.

“Running late for school again, Izuku?” his landlord, Mr Sherman, asked.

Izuku smiled at the old man sheepishly as he nodded his head.

“Well, don’t worry, I don’t plan on keeping you waiting. I was just going to remind you that your rent is due next week,” he said.

He internally groans at that. He had completely forgotten about that.

“Of course! Don’t worry, I took up a few extra shifts at the cafe so I could pay the rent on time this month,” he reassured him.

Mr Sherman gave him a pitiful look before sending him off. In all honesty, Izuku really hated pity, but he let it slide. Mr Sherman wasn’t someone Izuku knew particularly well, but they’d exchanged polite hellos in passing, and he let Izuku continue renting the apartment after he had lost his mother. Not a lot of people are kind enough to let orphaned kids rent apartments, let alone be so lenient with the rent. For that, Izuku was grateful, even if he tried not to dwell on it.

Shaking off the weight of the conversation, he shoved his earphones in and let the music drown out his thoughts as he sprinted toward the subway.

Izuku managed to get to school ten minutes before his first class started. Bursting through the main entrance, he sprinted towards his class. As he ran, he felt his phone buzz in his pocket and glanced down to pull it out.

Running and texting at the same time is not a good idea for very obvious reasons, so when he felt this tingling sensation and an intense urge to stop, he did what any smart person would—completely ignored it.

As a result of his“smart” decision-making, he crashed face-first into a locker that someone opened and fell flat on his ass.

“Hey, what the hell! Watch where you’re going, you damn extra. You- Deku?” a familiar, annoyed voice yelled out.

“Kacchan?” Izuku blinked in surprise.
