He was a companion of Dionysus, a spirit who parties hard and is more than happy to dance the night away. Things do get tiring, partying with the gods and after they stepped away from the earth humans, and the sex, relationships was definitely something Steve felt like he'd seen more than enough of for a century at least. Unless someone really special bothered to get to know him, the commitment of that might be nice.
Living somewhere with a pool had seemed nice originally. He might be a nature spirit but that doesn't mean he has to connect with natural water constantly, the filtered and chemically cleaned stuff could be nice sometimes. Then he realised that while he could shape and restyle his hair, use it to gain popularity and something people come to connect to him, his tail was not going to be so well received. Hiding it under his clothes normally was difficult enough, especially when he got into more sports but figuring out how to hide it well enough in water just so he could carry on having pool parties was a hassle. Enough of a hassle he took up swimming and joined the team at the school he'd finally got curious enough to try attending (and getting more people to invite to party was a bonus), all to justify learning how to hide his tail when swimming or in revealing clothes.
