The fur of your coat protected from the crisp night air. Your bare calves, however, did not. Shivering, you looked up to the moon – full and bright. The heat of your breath made clouds as you sighed. Alone you walked down the empty streets. You came across a park, dimly lit with a street lamp. The grass shined with dew, illuminating the ground as you stepped toward the gazebo in the center. As you reached the lifted floor you noticed a figure on the other side. It was crouched, barely moving. Worried it may be someone caught in the cold, you approached. When you got to the rail you noticed the figure was crouched over the flowerbed at the base of the gazebo. Thin hands were caressing and plucking select flowers.
Bright yellow eyes met yours. You jumped and took a step back, the creature flinched as well. After a breath, it chirped and smiled kindly, offering a flower it had picked. You slowly approached and took the flower from the monster’s hand. It quickly knelt back down and proceeded with its plucking. Curious, you leaned over the railing to watch. You flinched as the creature – quite quickly – stood and shoved a handful of flowers toward you. Its eyes avoided yours but quiet chirps escaped its maws, signaling its embarrassment.
Taking the flowers, you smiled and whispered, “Thank you.”
The creature met your gaze, eyes wide, and gave a lop-sided smile that made you giggle. The monster let out one last content chirp before leaping away, leaving you to stare at the flowers and wonder.
