Chapter Text
“Alright, class you are dismissed! I gotta go get my tacos from the food truck outside before they close” Mr. Iglesias jokes as the class collects their bags and starts heading out the door.
“Hey, Marisol.. you wanna come to my place tonight? We could watch a movie… or you know, whatever you want to do, Mi Cielito” Gabriel hears Mikey ask on the other side of the room. Marisol can tell he’s nervous, but she decides not to joke like she did last time. “Of course I’ll come, Mikey. Sounds like fun” She smiles.
Mikey smiles from ear to ear, back at her. She would be lying if she said that she didn’t get an odd sort of adrenaline rush when she made him smile like that, and knowing she was the only person who could do so gave her a sense of power, too.
Mikey reaches out his hand for her to take, and she smiles softly as she intertwines their fingers. Mr. Iglesias watches from his desk and mutters to himself, “Ese chico está viviendo el sueño.”
As they begin their walk home, Marisol decides to break the silence, “Mikey, did you finish your homework for this week?”
“There was homework?!” He panics, bringing both of his hands to his face to cover his ears, “When was it assigned? When is it due?”
“Mikey, relax,” Marisol chuckles softly, “It was just the journal project for Mr. Iglesias’ class. It’s due on Monday, remember?”
Mikey brings his hands back down, and begins to pick at the skin around his nails. “Oh, yeah. That. I’m pretty sure I finished it.”
“Good to know” Marisol nods, and puts her arm around Mikey’s shoulder. It takes him a few seconds, but he places a hand on her waist as well, and they walk to his house that way.
When they arrive at the house, Mikey puts their backpacks by the door and leads Marisol to his bedroom. “So, Marisol, Make yourself at home. Mi casa eyes tu casa.” Mikey smiles.
Marisol takes off her shoes, leaves them by his bedroom door, then climbs onto the bed. Mikey picks up the TV remote and sits down next to her. “What would you like to watch?” He asks.
“You got Disney Plus?” She turns to look at him, “Or Netflix?”
“Oh! I got Netflix!” Mikey says excitedly, flipping to the app and opening it.
“Could we watch ‘The Breakfast Club’?” Marisol suggests. She is offended when Mikey says he’s never heard of it. “It’s not my fault I’m not a nerd!” He says.
“I’m not a nerd for liking 80’s movies, Mikey.” Marisol deadpans. “Anyways, that’s okay, we can watch something else. How about ‘A Man Called Otto’?”
“Aw, but I always cry during that movie!” Mikey exclaims.
“That’s okay, Mikey, it’s not like there’s anyone here to judge you.”
“Alright, anything for you, princessa” Mikey sighs as he turns the movie on.
Marisol feels an odd warmth creeping up her neck; the same warmth she felt during Romeo and Juliet. She doesn’t enjoy how unfamiliar the feeling is, but she does enjoy the feeling itself. It’s like being worried, even though you know you haven’t got anything to worry about. Or being anxious, when you know all your anxieties can just be swept away in an instant by the right person.
And for Marisol, that person was Mikey.
And for Mikey, that person always has been, and always will be Marisol.
That’s why when he found out that she wasn’t getting enough sleep, he started to worry. With exams coming up, he knew that Marisol would be overworking herself, especially after taking on theatre class.
He knows Marisol better than anyone else, and so he knows when she’s acting off and when she needs help, even when she refuses to say anything. She’s stubborn like that, but it’s only one of the many things Mikey loves about her.
His goal was to get Marisol to— at the very least— take a nap. And he was determined to do so.
Fifteen minutes into the movie, he went and got popcorn and blankets for them, laying the blankets across their legs and placing the popcorn bowl in the middle of them.
When the popcorn ran out, he moved the bowl to his night stand and slid closer to Marisol.
Near the end of the movie, he went and got himself hot chocolate and Marisol the tea that she asked for. He got back under the blankets and cuddled up close to Marisol. The movie began to end, and he asked “would you like to watch that other movie you were talking about next?”
“The.. the breakfast club?” She clarified, “yeah! Sure” she said, smiling.
Mikey smiled as he switched on the new movie, bringing his arm around Marisol’s waist, and sliding his thumb across the design of her shirt.
They stay like that until the scene where The Jock and The Basket-case are set to go grab drinks for the rest of the students. Mikey notices Marisol’s eyes starting to close, as she lets out a yawn. She turns to look at him, just simply taking in his features. “What is it, love?” He asks, beginning to think something it wrong .
She smiles and kisses him on the cheek, “you’re so cute, Mikey” she says, and Mikey feels fireworks in every inch of his body. “Who are you and what have you done to Marisol?” He jokes.
She laughs quietly and turns back to the TV. Mikey’s ‘plan’ is working, Marisol might actually get some sleep.
He brings his hand up to her back and slowly starts to draw circles onto her skin. Marisol takes a deep breath and smiles. Mikey then slowly moves his hand to her arm, coaxing her head onto his shoulder. Marisol closes her eyes, allowing herself to be vulnerable just this once.
Mikey moves his hand into her hair now. Marisol hums, “that… that feels nice..” She mumbles. Mikey smiles fondly at her, glad she’s getting rest. He lowers the volume on the TV and slowly lays down, gently dragging Marisol with him. She lays down facing the other way and he wraps his arms around her waist.
They stay like this for long enough that Mikey thinks Marisol has fallen asleep, but he was surprised when she turned around to face him, her eyes only telling him how exhausted she was.
She brings a hand up to cup his face, “Te quiero mucho, Mikey” she whispers before she kisses him quickly on the lips and wraps her arms around his neck, nuzzling her face into his chest.
“I- I love you too, Marisol” Mikey stammers. He didn’t expect such outright affection, but he’s glad it happened. He kisses her forehead, before deciding that he should probably sleep too.
