Polished Hearts

Summary:

Being forced to get a manicure in time for Rebecca's wedding just might be the best thing that's happened to Jamie.

Notes:

This was going to be a one-shot, but I ended up making it longer than I thought I was going to. So, here's a mini fic! Enjoy:)

Chapter 1: Chapter 1

Chapter Text

“I made you an appointment to get your nails done.” Rebecca said as she flipped through wedding catalogs.

“You what?” Jamie choked, sprinkling crumbs of her biscuit everywhere.

“Hey! Watch it. You’re cleaning that up.” Rebecca huffed with a roll of her eyes.

“Why would you do that?” Jamie asked incredulously.

“Because you’re my best woman and my best woman is going to have her fucking nails done when she’s standing in front of everyone at my wedding.” She snapped the catalog closed and gave Jamie a look that told her not to start arguing.

Jamie sighed and put her head in her hand. “Becs, my nails look just fine. They’re gonna get all fucked up anyway. I’m a fuckin’ florist.”

“And I’m so grateful that you are.” She stood from the couch and walked over to Jamie to pinch her cheek. “Wouldn’t trust anyone else to do the flowers at my wedding. But, Jamie. You’re getting your nails done. End of story.” She stole the biscuit from Jamie’s fingers and took a bite with a smirk.

“Oi, that was mine. I literally just took a bite out of it.” Jamie scowled at her.

Rebecca shrugged and smiled. “Your appointment is tomorrow at 6. I’ll send you the address. Have fun!”

Jamie walked into the salon the next day and gagged at the smell of chemicals in the air.

“Uh, hi. Name’s Jamie Taylor. Gettin’ my nails done.” She awkwardly told the receptionist. She cursed Rebecca in her head for putting her in this situation. If only she was back in her flat watching a stupid show on television with a glass of wine.

She smiled at Jamie and typed a few things on her computer. “Ah, yes. 6 o’clock with Dani. You can just sit on the couch. She’ll come out and get you when she’s ready. Can I get you some tea while you wait?”

“Oh, um, sure. I’ll have some tea. Thanks.” Jamie smiled back at her and sat on the couch. She looked around at the people in the salon either getting their hair or makeup done. She sighed as she leaned back against the couch, wishing Rebecca had made her a hair appointment instead. The last time she had nail polish on was when she worked at the manor a few towns over and promised Flora if she stayed away from her garden she would let the little girl paint her nails any color she wanted. Of course, Jamie kicked herself for promising this as she walked around with hot pink nail polish all over her fingertips for the next three days. It was worth it in the end since her garden remained untouched by the children.

“Hey, I’m Dani.” Jamie jumped and looked up. She stood up from the couch and held her hand out to the beautiful, blonde woman in front of her to shake her hand. “You must be Jamie. It’s nice to meet you. Here’s your tea.” She handed Jamie the cup with a soft laugh. “Don’t worry, I didn’t make it. Another British person did. Everyone tells me I suck at it.”

Jamie was at a loss for words. This gorgeous woman was standing in front of her and handing her a cup of tea. And talking to her. And Jamie was still holding her hand. She quickly retracted her hand and bashfully smiled. “Nice to meet you, Dani. I’m sure your tea isn’t that bad. Pretty hard to mess up.”

Dani smiled with a small shrug. “Next time, I’ll make the tea for you and you can see for yourself. Follow me and we’ll get started.” Dani led Jamie to the back of the salon. She was able to see more of it now. It was quieter back here and the lights were dimmer, creating a more relaxing atmosphere.

“Nice back here.” Jamie commented, sipping her tea.

“Thank you. I pretty much run the services back here. I try to make it as calming as I can. I say it’s for the clients, but it’s honestly just as much for me as it is for them. Helps with anxiety.” Dani shrugged.

Jamie smiled at her and watched as she hurried around the room to prepare her supplies. “Ok, come sit here and we’ll get started.” Jamie nodded and sat at the chair across from Dani. “Rebecca gave me a few colors to choose from, but I want to see what color you’d like.”

“Oh, I have to pick a color?” Jamie sighed and shook her head. “I don’t do this often. Or at all, really.”

Dani softly laughed. “I was going to say I’ve never seen you in here before. It’s ok, I’ll go easy on you.” She winked at Jamie and bent down to pull out a tray of different colored nail polishes.

Jamie blushed and opened her mouth to respond, but no words came out. She quickly shut her mouth before Dani could see her flustered state. “Black?”

Dani looked up and blinked at Jamie. “Rebecca said you might pick that. She told me to get you to pick another color, but I can see how thrilled you are to be here, so I’m just going to give you what you want.”

Jamie grumbled to herself in annoyance with Rebecca and laid her hands on the table. “Sorry for the dirt under my nails. I just came from work. I wash my hands, but sometimes it’s impossible to get this shit out.”

“No worries. I’ll take care of it.” Dani held Jamie’s right hand in her own and began to trim her nails. “What do you do?”

“I’m a florist. Own my own shop a few blocks over.” Jamie watched as Dani delicately maneuvered her hand in her own to clip each nail. She thought it was sweet how gentle Dani was as she worked. And she loved how soft Dani's hands were. She told herself to stop being weird, but when a beautiful woman is holding your hand it’s hard not to get excited.

“Oh, The Leafling? I walk past that place all the time. My apartment is right across the street. Or my flat. Whatever you guys call it.” Dani picked up one of her tools and gently cleaned the dirt from under Jamie’s freshly clipped fingernails.

“I’m assumin’ you're from America. What made you move here?” Jamie asked, watching as Dani picked up another tool.

“Are you nervous? It feels like you’re shaking.” Dani stopped and looked up into Jamie’s eyes.

“Oh, uh. Maybe a little. Never had this done before. Is it gonna hurt?” Jamie winced. She knew she was being a baby, but Rebecca didn’t warn her on what was going to happen at this appointment.

“It shouldn’t. People tell me I’m pretty gentle with what I do. But if it hurts or you’re uncomfortable, just tell me and I’ll stop.” Dani patted Jamie’s hand with a soft smile and got back to work.

“Lucky me.” Jamie nervously chuckled and gulped as she watched Dani push her cuticles back and then carefully nip them away. Dani smirked at Jamie with a soft blush forming across her cheeks.

“I am from America. I moved here when I was eighteen for cosmetology and esthetician school. London has a great program, but once I graduated I wanted to get out of the city, so I came here. To a smaller city.” Dani softly laughed.

“Is London known for cosmetology school?” Jamie asked, watching as Dani filed and buffed her nails.

“Well, it’s a major city so they have some great resources there. They’re mostly known for hair, though. I came here because I needed to get out of Iowa and this was farther than New York.” Dani picked up Jamie’s left hand and began trimming her fingernails.

“How long have you been here?” It was mesmerizing watching Dani work. She really was gentle, but she moved so fast.

“I’ve been at this salon for about four years now, but I’ve been in England for eight. Are you from around here?” She started cleaning under the fingernails of Jamie’s left hand.

“No, I’m from up north. Moved down here when I was twenty.” Jamie started to get nervous again when Dani pushed at her cuticles.

“And how long ago was that?” Dani asked, rubbing her thumb along Jamie’s knuckles as Jamie’s hands started shaking again. “Hm, you don’t like when I mess with your cuticles.”

“Sorry, just feels like you're gonna cut my skin off.” Jamie smiled at Dani’s laugh. She couldn’t wait for a chance to sneak another joke in, wanting to hear Dani laugh over and over again. “The move was eight years ago.”

Dani nodded as she finished buffing Jamie’s nails. “So, we’re not the same age then. I was guessing we were. A two year difference isn’t much, though.”

“Yeah, not that big of a gap.” Jamie softly smiled to herself.

When Dani was finished caring for Jamie’s nails, she leaned down and grabbed two small steaming towels. “Don’t worry. This is the fun part.” Dani said as she wrapped Jamie’s hands.

“Oh, that feels nice.” Jamie closed her eyes as the heat engulfed her hands. Once the towels started to get cold, Dani removed them and lathered some cream in her hands. She held Jamie’s right hand in hers and started to massage Jamie’s palm with her thumbs. Jamie bit her tongue to hold back a moan. “Fuck, that feels amazin’.” Dani softly laughed as she massaged in between Jamie’s fingers.

She eventually grabbed Jamie’s left hand and began massaging. This time, Jamie couldn’t hold back her moan and laughed out an apology. Dani blushed and softly smiled at Jamie as she continued to massage her. Jamie smirked to herself at Dani’s blush, sighing once the massage was over.

“Rebecca might kill me for this.” Dani said as she started painting Jamie’s nails. “But I don’t really care.”

“Thanks for puttin’ your life on the line.” Jamie’s smile widened when Dani laughed again.

“So, usually I have clients put their nails under the light, but I used regular polish on you so I’ll just have you put your nails under this little fan.” Dani said, standing from her chair. Jamie complied and jumped when she felt Dani’s hands on her shoulders. Dani was massaging her again and Jamie had to bite her tongue extra hard to hold back another moan. Her fingers were digging into the tight muscles of her neck and shoulders.

“You’re very tense, Jamie.” She commented, running her fingers up Jamie’s neck to massage the base of her skull.

“This feels fuckin’ incredible.” Jamie sighed, relaxing under Dani’s touch.

“I’m glad. I do massages too. You should schedule one with me. Feels like you could use one.” She finished massaging Jamie’s shoulders and rubbed her back. “It’s an hour. This one’s only two minutes.”

“Maybe I will. That was heavenly.” Jamie nodded.

“I’m glad. Can I get you anything while your nails dry?” Dani asked as she finished cleaning her area.

“No, thank you.” Jamie smiled at her.

“Ok, I’ll be back in a few minutes.” Dani said as she walked into the main area of the salon.

“I’m gonna kill Becs.” Jamie softly groaned. Of course, Rebecca made her appointment with Dani. Rebecca had been going to Dani for a few years now, but she had to know Jamie was going to develop a crush. She was a pretty blonde who gave amazing massages for Christ's sake.

Dani came back in with a smile and started gathering more tools. “Dani, my nails are still wet, but I want to give you a tip. Ya know, for not cuttin’ my fingers off. Would you be able to reach into my pocket for me?”

“As much as I’d love to reach into your pocket, we’re not done here.” Dani playfully smiled at Jamie’s blush. “Hate to break it to you, but I’m giving you a pedicure too.”

Jamie groaned and laid her head on her arms. “Can we just pretend that we already did that part?”

Dani laughed and rolled her eyes. “Am I that bad?”

“No! Not at all. I just don’t really like people touchin’ my feet.” Jamie mumbled. “Not that anyone’s tried, but it doesn't seem like fun to me.”

“Well, maybe I can change your mind.” She sat in front of the chair and patted it. “Come sit.” Jamie got up with a sigh and walked over to the chair. She took Jamie’s boots and socks off, and rolled her jeans up to her mid calf. Jamie watched Dani the whole time with her lips slightly parted and her breathing picking up.

Why is this turnin’ me on? Jamie shook her head to snap herself out of her daydream and hummed as Dani moved her feet to the warm water.

“Too hot?” Dani asked. Jamie shook her head and closed her eyes, letting herself relax into the chair. “I think you’ll enjoy this. You’re probably on your feet all day. Plus, Rebecca already paid for this, so you don’t even have to worry about that.”

“Yeah, I am on my feet all day. Didn’t realize how nice hot water would feel.” Jamie said.

“You get a foot massage too. Honestly, pedicures are my favorite. I think they’re the most relaxing.” Dani said as she pulled Jamie’s right foot out of the water.

“Wish I could massage myself.” Jamie mumbled with her eyes closed.

“Your boyfriend is going to have to learn how.” Dani said as she started trimming Jamie’s nails.

“Gonna have to stop bein’ a lesbian for that one to happen.” Jamie snorted.

Dani blushed and softly laughed. “Sorry, I didn’t want to assume.”

“So, you assumed I'm straight? Honestly, Dani, what an insult. Look at me. I came to get my nails done in dirty boots.” Jamie snorted.

Dani smiled up at her and shrugged. “I don’t know. Not everything is as it seems.”

“True. Well, no boyfriend for me. Thank god.” Jamie shook her head. “Fuck, you do the cuticle thing on my toes too?”

“Don’t worry. I didn’t chop off any fingers, I won’t chop off any toes.” Dani promised, a distant look on her face. She quickly covered it with a smile and began nipping Jamie’s cuticles.

Jamie watched as Dani buffed her nails and set her foot back in the water before reaching for her left foot and giving it the same treatment. “Your favorite, Jamie.” She joked as she eventually started massaging Jamie’s feet and calves.

“Fuck, you get the legs too? I’m in heaven right now.” Jamie sighed, leaning her head back with her eyes closed. Dani softly smiled at the relaxed look on Jamie’s face as she massaged her, deciding to spend a couple of extra minutes on her.

Once the pedicure was over, Dani gently tapped Jamie’s shin and hid a laugh when Jamie jumped. “Sorry, didn’t mean to fall asleep there. I haven’t been sleepin’ well.” She sighed and shook her head.

“Sorry to hear that.” Dani said, grabbing a pair of disposable flip flops. She put them on Jamie’s feet and giggled at the horrified look on her face.

“Dani, I am not wearin’ these.” She shook her head.

“Well, that’s why you don’t wear boots to a pedicure.” Dani shrugged, cleaning her area.

“I didn’t even know I was gettin’ a pedicure!” Jamie stood up and stared at her feet. “Jesus fuckin’ christ.”

“Well, on the bright side, your fingernails are dry.” Dani said as she inspected Jamie’s nails.

Jamie sullenly nodded and pulled her wallet out of her pocket. “Here, for you.” She handed Dani a ten pound note and thanked her. “Was the most relaxing thing I’ve ever sat through.”

“Really? You better start setting aside more time to relax.” Dani laughed. “I’m glad I could help calm you.” She laughed.

“I’ll be back for that massage.” Jamie said on her way out.

“Looking forward to it.” Dani winked.

Of course, Jamie scheduled a massage with Dani on her way out. Next week, same time, same place. And she’d be counting down the days.

“So, how was it? Let me see your nails.” Rebecca excitedly reached for Jamie’s hands. “Black? Jamie!”

“Look, Becs. I got my nails done. Isn’t that enough?” Jamie sighed. “It was great, though.”

“Isn’t Dani the best? I absolutely love her. But what the fuck?” She slapped Jamie’s shoulder and looked down. “These goddamn boots. I’m guessing your toenails are fucking black too?”

“They are! Good guess.” Jamie cheered, dodging Rebecca’s hand. “My toes won’t even be on display at the weddin’. But, Dani’s fuckin’ incredible. I fell asleep in the chair, Becs.”

Rebecca laughed and nodded. “I’ve been there before. That’s why I don’t go after a long day of work anymore. Only scheduled you that time because it was the only open slot she had and my wedding is in two days.”

“S’alright. I honestly could have fallen asleep there at any time of the day. She’s amazin’.” Jamie gushed.

“Pretty too, huh?” Rebecca smirked.

Jamie glared at her. “I knew that’s why you set me up with her.”

“Well, you’re both coming to the wedding alone, so I figured you’d hit it off and then maybe-”

“She’s gay?” Jamie interrupted. “And comin’ to the weddin’?”

“She’s doing the makeup. And I don’t know if she’s gay, but everyone’s gay when it comes to you, James.” Rebecca shrugged. “I’ve seen you out at the bars with all the girls that claim to be straight.”

“Please, don’t remind me. They’re all my drunken mistakes just as much as I am theirs.” Jamie rolled her eyes and flopped onto the couch.

“Well, don’t make Dani a mistake. She’s a sweetheart and I love her. Can’t have my nail appointments being awkward now because of a one night stand.”

Jamie sighed and laughed. “She’s not gay, Becs. She just doesn’t have a date for your weddin’.”

“Relax. Everything is fine.” Jamie led Rebecca to a chair and forced her to sit down. “Take a deep breath. It’s fuckin’ early. There’s plenty of time for everything and everyone to get here, ok?”

Rebecca put her face in her hands and let out a sob. Jamie sighed and pulled her in for a hug. “Can I just cry on you for a minute? I’m just so stressed, Jamie.”

“Of course. Not in my nice clothes yet, anyway.” She rubbed Rebecca’s back and let her cry. A knock on the door broke the two of them from their hug. They looked up to see Dani in the doorway with a small smile on her face.

“Everything ok in here?” She walked in with a big bag hanging from her shoulder and a carrier that held three cups of tea.

Jamie rushed over to her to help by taking the bag from her. Her eyes widened when she almost dropped it to the floor. “Jesus, Dani. What the fuck is in here? Rocks?”

Dani laughed and set the drinks down. “Make up.”

Jamie sighed once she set the heavy bag down. “Becs is havin’ a bit of pre weddin’ panic this mornin’.”

Rebecca wiped her face and laughed. “I just need everything to go well.”

Dani walked over and hugged her. “Trust me, I completely understand.”

Rebecca nodded and hugged Dani. “You were smart about it. Called the whole thing off.”

Jamie raised an eyebrow at Dani, who waved her off with a look that promised she’d explain later. “What can I do to help you?”

“I’m not sure. I really just need to sit here and wait. None of my bridesmaids are here yet, my family’s not here yet, the fucking groom isn’t even here yet.” Rebecca sighed. “I know it’s really early, though. I just need to be patient.”

“I’m going to start bringin’ the flowers over. Get them set up and all that. Somethin’ to put you at ease.” Jamie kissed Rebecca’s head and smiled at Dani.

“Do you need any help?” Dani offered, handing Jamie a cup of tea.

“Oh, thank you. Yeah, I could use an extra set of hands.” Jamie shrugged. “That alright with you if I steal Dani, Becs?”

“That’s fine. I could probably use a minute to myself.” Rebecca stood up and stretched. “Practice some of those techniques you taught me, Dani.”

“Definitely do that. It always helps me when I’m in a panic.” Dani smiled, waiting for Jamie to organize everything she needed.

“I can’t even picture you panicking.” Rebecca laughed.

“Please. I used to be an absolute mess all the time. But, I started practicing mindfulness and learned a bunch of breathing techniques. Basically all the stuff that I teach my clients. And I’ve never been more relaxed.” Jamie listened as she gathered her supplies, smiling to herself at how happy Dani seemed to talk about her practice. “Obviously, it’s not the only thing that helps bring someone out of a constant state of panic, but it helps a lot.” She shrugged.

“Well, what else can I do?” Rebecca asked, stretching her hands up to the ceiling and taking a deep breath in.

“Listen to yourself. If something feels… wrong, then don’t do it. You have to do what’s going to make you happy. Don’t worry about what everyone around you thinks.” Dani’s eyes had started to glaze over as she got lost in what she was saying to Rebecca.

Jamie watched the two of them and shook her head in confusion. Two women trying to navigate their lives at 9 o’clock in the morning when Jamie could barely process how she’d gotten to the venue. “Ready when you are, Dani.” Dani snapped out of her daze and gave Jamie a thumbs up. “I just need some help movin’ some of the arrangements into my van. I can do all the settin’ up.” Jamie explained as they walked outside.

“Good because I have zero artistic vision when it comes to flowers.” Dani laughed.

“I doubt that. You do people’s nails and makeup for a livin’.” Jamie opened the van door for Dani and bowed playfully. “M’lady.”

“Why thank you, ma’am.” Dani played along and bowed.

The two of them laughed and Jamie closed the door, running to the other side to hop in. “Feel free to mess around with the radio.” Jamie offered, starting the van and pulling out of the venue. Dani played with the radio for a few minutes before deciding on a pop station. Jamie smiled as Dani softly nodded her head and sang along.

“Are there a lot of flowers for us to carry?” Dani asked.

“Oh, yeah. Rebecca went all out. Don’t get me wrong, weddin’s are great for my business, but I just don’t understand what all the fuss is about.” Jamie shrugged. “To each their own, I guess. I sort of hate her fiance, though.”

Dani laughed and nodded. “Yeah, weddings are… a lot. I know you heard Rebecca mention I called one off.”

“Was hopin’ we’d get to that.” Jamie nodded, her eyes quickly traveling off the road and onto Dani.

“Yeah. It’s part of the reason why I moved here.” Dani sighed.

“Didn’t you move to England when you were eighteen?” Jamie asked.

“I did. I come from a very small town. Most of the women there don’t even go to college. They marry their highschool sweethearts right after graduation, become full time housewives, and have a bunch of kids.” Dani stared out the window as if she was lost in a trance.

Jamie grimaced. “Sounds awful.

“Very old fashioned. And I almost got stuck in it. But, at the last second I called my engagement off. I knew that wasn’t the life for me.” Dani snapped out of her trance and looked over at Jamie, who was looking back at her.

“Good for you, Dani. I’m sure that wasn’t easy.” Jamie smiled. Dani smiled back, her expression softening. “I’m sure I can speak for all the Brits who have had the chance to meet you that we’re happy to have you here.”

“Thank you, Jamie. That’s really sweet of you.” Dani sniffled and looked down at her hands in her lap.

“Hey, now. No cryin’ on the weddin’ day. Remember, it’s not yours.” Jamie joked, causing Dani to burst out in laughter.

“Thank god.” She mumbled.

Jamie parked the van behind her shop and turned the engine off. She looked over at Dani and opened her mouth to speak, but closed it and smiled instead. “Let’s go get these fuckin’ plants.”

Jamie unlocked the back door and allowed Dani to walk in first. “You can look around if you want. Have to go over the list before we load these into the truck.”

Dani nodded and walked into the front of the shop, looking around at the beautiful plants and flowers that surrounded her. She smiled at the small pride flag Jamie had at the cash register.

“This is beautiful, Jamie.” She called out.

“Thanks. Worked my ass off to get it where it is.” Jamie smiled, walking into the front room.

“I love these.” Dani smiled, examining the lego plants Jamie had at the counter.

“Oh, thank you. One of my hobbies. Thought they would look good down here.” Jamie laughed, a slight blush coloring her cheeks.

“So you do have relaxing hobbies. They look great out here.” Dani smiled. “Do you live upstairs?”

Jamie nodded as she looked over her list one last time. “Yeah, makes it real convenient when I miss my alarm.” She joked.

“We’re neighbors! You’ll have to come by sometime and I can make you some tea.” Dani smiled. “Well, I can make you a cold cup of water with ice.”

“Of course, you have ice.” Jamie laughed. “I’d love to come over sometime. How do you fuck up tea, though? I’m sure whoever you’re makin’ it for is just picky.”

The two women stood in the middle of the front room, surrounded by Jamie’s beautiful flowers, staring into one another’s eyes. Dani smiled at how the light caught Jamie’s green eyes. She felt like she could stand there, staring at her all day. Jamie inched closer ever so slightly, wanting to run her fingers through Dani’s blonde hair. It looked so soft and it was done up so nicely. Dani’s eyes fluttered shut and she took a small breath in. Jamie came back to reality when she felt her phone buzz and gave Dani an apologetic smile, who opened her eyes at the shift in mood.

“It’s Becs. Says some of the bridesmaids are startin’ to show up. Should probably get these flowers there.” Jamie said, leading the two of them into the back room.

“Just tell me what to do and I’m on it.” Jamie nodded and began instructing Dani on which plants to place in the van. After half an hour of maneuvering everything, both women were on their way back to the venue.

“Good luck with all the makeup.” Jamie said as she pulled a few plants out of her truck.

“Good luck with the flowers.” Dani smiled, waving to Jamie as she turned to walk into the building. “Jamie?”

“Hm?” Jamie looked up.

“You know, I’m doing your makeup right? So, you’re going to need to come see me once you're done here.” Dani laughed at the tired look on Jamie’s face.

“No, Dani. Are you serious?” She whined.

“I’m afraid so. Don’t worry, though. I’m doing your makeup a little differently than the bridesmaids’.” Dani promised.

“Why? ‘Cause I’m the best woman?” Jamie picked up the biggest bunch of flowers and walked inside with Dani.

“No. I knew you wouldn’t be thrilled about having your makeup done, so I thought of a more subtle look for you.” Dani patted her on the shoulder.

“Oh, well, thank you.” Jamie blushed at the fact that Dani had been thinking about her. She had taken the time out of her day to think of a way to make Jamie more comfortable. “I don’t mind a bit of lipstick every now and then.” She shrugged.

“Ok, I will keep that in mind.” Dani winked, walking into the back room.

Jamie blew out a lungful of air and began setting up the flowers, determined to make this day as beautiful as she could for Rebecca. She grunted as she moved the biggest plants she had, muscles straining and aching.

“Fuck me. This shit is heavy. I really gotta start usin’ the fuckin’ dollie.” She caught her breath and stretched before going back outside to grab a few more arrangements. It took her about an hour to get everything set the way she and Rebecca had planned it. She scanned the room and proudly smiled, mentally patting herself on the back before walking into the backroom to get ready.

“Jamie! How are the flowers looking?” Rebecca practically fell into her arms when she walked in.

“Oh, jesus. Champagne time?” Jamie laughed as she hugged Rebecca. “Seriously, how much have you had? Don’t want you pukin’ all over your groom. Well, actually…”

Rebecca laughed and slapped Jamie on the shoulder. “You’re so funny. I can’t stand him either, honestly. Don’t know what the fuck I’m doing.” She whispered as she pulled herself from Jamie’s arms and walked to the other side of the room to join her bridesmaids in conversation.

“Oh, no.” Jamie mumbled. “At least the flowers look nice.” She grabbed a flute of champagne and practically downed it in one go.

“Rough time with the flowers?” Dani laughed as she came up next to Jamie.

“Ah, not really. This is just a lot. Lots of people I don’t know, forced conversations, busy day. You know how it is. Could actually go for a smoke.” Jamie sighed.

Dani hummed in agreement. Jamie turned to her and her eyes slightly widened. “Wow, Dani. You look amazin’. Jesus.” Dani stood there in a skin tight, satin chocolate dress. Jamie let her eyes travel over Dani's body, paying extra attention to the swell of her hips and belly.

Dani blushed and softly laughed. “Thank you, Jamie. I figured it was time to get out of my sweatpants. I still have to do my makeup and fix my hair a little more, though.”

“You looked great in the sweatpants too, but jesus. I don’t know why it didn’t cross my mind that you were gonna get changed.” Jamie realized she was babbling and ogling Dani, so she closed her mouth and looked away with a nervous laugh.

“Thank you.” Dani smiled at her nervousness and nudged Jamie. “Stop making me blush and come sit down. I’ll do your makeup.”

Jamie nodded and sat in the chair, which Dani turned towards herself. “What color are you wearing?” She asked as she put her hands on the arm rests of the chair and leaned in front of Jamie. She was studying Jamie’s face; staring into her eyes, looking down at her lips. Jamie couldn’t tell if Dani was planning a certain look for her or if she just wanted to look at Jamie. Either way, it was making her nervous in the best way.

“My suit is sage green.” Jamie said, trying her best not to look down at Dani’s cleavage.

Dani stood up and nodded. “Great, let me get my things and I’ll be right back.”

Jamie let out the breath she had been holding in once Dani walked away. “Stop bein’ a fuckin’ creep.” She mumbled to herself.

Dani came back with her hands full and dumped her things on the table. “Sorry, I’m so unorganized today.” She laughed at herself and grabbed a pencil. “Ok, so I was thinking I’d do just a little bit of eyeshadow and a little pencil to make your eyes pop and then some color for the lips. Maybe a tiny bit of pencil on your eyebrows. Oh, maybe some bronzer too.”

“Dani, just do your thing. I don’t really know what much of this means. Can’t really visualize it. I trust you not to make me look like a clown.” Dani thought for a few more minutes and then nodded. She started with the eyeshadow which consisted of a mixture of browns and a small dusting of a shimmery green. She also added some eyeliner and gave Jamie the tiniest of wings on her upper lid.

Dani leaned back and admired her work, while Jamie stared into her blue eyes. She watched as her soft hair fell from behind her shoulders and curtained around her face. Dani eventually locked eyes with Jamie and gave her a smile to which Jamie returned after snapping out of her haze.

“Do you want to see it so far?” Dani asked.

“I’ll wait till you’re done.” Dani nodded and grabbed another pencil to start working on Jamie’s eyebrows. “You’ve got some nineties eyebrows.”

“Is that a good or bad thing?” Jamie laughed.

“Neither. Just making an observation.” Jamie hummed in response. “I like them. They suit your face.” Dani smiled as she finished.

“Well, thanks.” Jamie shrugged. “Am I done yet?”

“I just have to finish your lips. I’m thinking nude.” Dani hummed to herself.

“Huh?” Jamie’s eyebrows furrowed.

“Wha- Oh. Oh! The lipstick. A nude lipstick.” Dani’s cheeks burned pink and Jamie nervously laughed, gulping and looking away. Dani searched through a small case and pulled out a few lipsticks. “I’m going to test a few.”

She leaned in close to Jamie and applied one of the lipsticks. “No, I don’t like this one.” She grabbed a tissue and gently wiped it off. “Maybe this one.” Again, she wiped it off with a shake of her head. After a third try, she huffed and searched through her case again.

She leaned in close to Jamie whose lips were slightly parted and brought the new lipstick close to her lips. “I think this one will be nice.” She whispered, trailing her thumb across Jamie’s bottom lip. “You have the pinkest lips.”

Jamie sat as still as she could, not daring to move a muscle in fear of interrupting Dani. She liked having Dani this close to her. She could smell her sweet perfume and count almost every one of her eyelashes. Dani blinked a few times and cleared her throat, applying the new shade.

“There we go.” She stood back and forced a smile. “Looks great. Just let me put some mascara on you and you’ll be on your way.” She quickly coated Jamie’s eyelashes in mascara and handed her a small mirror. “What do you think?”

Jamie took the mirror and held it up. She softly gasped and smiled, staring at her new face in the mirror. “Wow, Dani. I’ve never felt this pretty before.” She smiled at Dani who was staring at her in wonder.

“You’re beautiful, Jamie. Don’t even need the makeup.” She barely whispered.

Jamie opened her mouth to respond, but was cut short when Rebecca called for Dani. “That’s my cue. See you out there.” She winked and disappeared, leaving Jamie to stare at herself in the mirror. She noticed that her cheeks were slightly pink, wondering when Dani applied any blush to her cheeks.

Jamie stood at the altar with Peter standing across from her as they all waited for Rebecca to make her entrance. Jamie glared at him as he looked around the venue. Of course he was checking the place out, he didn’t even go with Rebecca to visit it. Jamie did. He barely did anything to help with the wedding. Jamie and Rebecca had gotten it all done without him.

Everyone turned around upon hearing the doors open and the music start to play. There was Rebecca in her beautiful wedding gown, standing next to her father. Jamie winced at the terrified look on her face.

She stood there for what seemed like ages until she finally made eye contact with Jamie. She shook her head and mouthed the words ‘I’m sorry’ before turning around and running out of the venue. Everyone gasped and began murmuring to one another. Peter stood there with his mouth hanging open, looking around the room as he tried to figure out what to do. Eventually, he turned to Jamie who could’ve burned holes through his head with the stare she was giving him.

Jamie huffed and jumped off the altar to run down the aisle and out the doors. “Of course that fuckers not gonna go after her himself.” She muttered to herself.

“Becs?” She called for her once she made it out into the parking lot. “Becca, where are you?” She ran around the side of the building and sighed when she found her crying against the wall.

“Jamie.” Her voice cracked.

“Come here.” Jamie said, arms open and waiting for Rebecca to fall into them. “S’alright.” She rubbed Rebecca’s back and held her tightly. “You already know I hate him.”

Rebecca laughed and then let out a sob. The two stood there for a few minutes before Rebecca’s mother came to find them. “I’ll take it from here, Jamie.” She softly thanked Jamie before she wrapped her arms around her daughter.

“Just give me a buzz if you need me.” She offered, before turning around to make her way back inside. “Where the fuck is everyone?”

“Rebecca’s dad told everyone to go enjoy the refreshments. He said everything’s already paid for, so we might as well eat dinner.” Dani said.

“Why aren’t you eatin’ then?” Jamie asked with a playful smile.

“I was waiting for you.” Dani blushed.

Jamie smiled at Dani. She couldn’t seem to stop smiling around this woman who she had only known for about three days. “Wow, Dani. Your makeup looks great.”

“Thank you. I did it kind of quickly.” She shrugged. “It could have been a lot better.”

“You look beautiful.” Jamie said, getting lost in Dani’s eyes.

“So do you.” Dani looked down to hide her blush. “Oh, hey. I never got to take a picture of you.”

“A picture?” Jamie asked.

“Yeah, I like to take pictures of my clients after I do their makeup. For my social media. Marketing and all that stuff.” Dani brushed off. “Would that be ok?”

“Of course. Want me to smile?” Jamie gave her a wide smile, scrunching up her eyes.

Dani laughed and snapped a picture. “I’m going to take a few, so just make whatever faces you want.”

Jamie made an array of silly faces just to hear Dani laugh over and over again. Eventually, she gave Dani a neutral look, so she could capture the makeup.

“We need one together now because we’re kind of matchin’.” Jamie grabbed her phone and held it up. “Takin’ a selfie. Get in here.”

Dani stood close to Jamie and wrapped her arm around her waist, leaning her head against Jamie’s and smiling for the picture. “Did you mean to match with me?” Jamie joked, her voice slightly catching in her throat at their proximity. She liked the way Dani’s arm felt around her waist, her hand gripping her hip.

Dani stumbled for words before bashfully nodding. “I thought the brown and the green looked good together. And we’re the only people here without dates, so I figured we might as well match. That’s why I did green eyeshadow.”

Jamie smirked and nudged Dani. “What a flirt.”

Dani rolled her eyes and laughed. “Send me those selfies.”

“I will. Come on, let’s go have dinner. I’ll check on Becs in a bit. Don’t wanna crowd her.” Jamie said, leading Dani to the other room.

After they ate, Jamie snuck out to check on Rebecca. She was sitting in the back room where they had gotten their makeup done. She knocked on the door and peeked her head in. “Becs?”

“In here.” She croaked. She was curled up on the corner of the couch with used tissues surrounding her.

“Hey, love.” Jamie batted some tissues off the couch and sat down. “What are you thinkin’?”

“That I’m an idiot.” She mumbled.

“I’d say you’re fuckin’ smart gettin’ away from a guy like him.” Jamie scooted closer and pulled Rebecca in for a side hug. “Why’d you run?”

“I couldn’t do it, Jamie. And I know you told me repeatedly that he isn’t the one, but I just couldn’t see it until today. I thought maybe I was just nervous earlier, but when those doors opened and I saw him standing there I knew I couldn’t do it.” She sobbed. “I’m so embarrassed.”

“Becs, honestly. Most of us are cheerin’ you on. Nobody liked him, love.” Jamie started laughing. She couldn’t stop. She just kept picturing the look on Peter’s face when Rebecca ran from the doors.

“Jamie.” She slapped Jamie’s shoulder, but couldn’t hold her own laughter in. “Why is this so funny?”

“His fuckin’ face, Becs. I can’t.” Jamie was laughing so hard that tears were rolling down her cheeks. “My fuckin’ stomach hurts, I can’t stop laughin’.”

Dani softly knocked on the door and looked in. “Sorry, I don’t really know anyone else here and some guy was trying to dance with me, so I had to get away.”

Rebecca waved Dani in, trying to calm her laughing. “Jamie’s in a laughing fit, as you can see.”

“I can’t help it!” She cried, holding her stomach as she laughed harder. “Fuck.” She took a deep breath and tried to slow her laughing. “Sometimes, I have laughing fits over the dumbest shit.” She told Dani. “But this time I really had somethin’ to laugh about.” Dani's smile widened at Jamie's hysterical laughing, loving the way her eyes squeezed closed and her nose scrunched up.

“The look on Peter’s face when I walked out.” Rebecca chuckled and rolled her eyes.

Dani laughed along with them. “The look on Jamie’s face was even better. At first you looked excited and then I thought you were going to kill Peter.”

“Yeah, ‘cause he wasn’t even gonna try to follow Becs. Piece of shit.” She mumbled, trying to hide her excitement at the fact that Dani was watching her.

“How was dinner?” Rebecca asked.

“It was delicious. Owen always outdoes himself. You didn’t eat?” Jamie asked.

“I can go get you a plate.” Dani offered.

“No, thank you. I think I’ll throw up whatever I put in my stomach, right now.” She shook her head.

“Understandable.” Dani sighed and nodded.

“How did you deal with this, Dani?” Rebecca asked, putting her face in her hands.

“It felt like I was drowning. I lost my best friend that day, a whole family who took me in, my mom. I didn’t really lose her, but she didn’t talk to me for months. She wasn’t very supportive like your mom.” Dani sighed, staring off into the distance.

“Yeah, I’m lucky that I’ve got some supportive people here.” Rebecca smiled at Jamie and patted her knee.

“And you’re in your late twenties. You’ve got some idea of what you’re doing with your life. I was only eighteen. I had no idea what I was doing.” Dani put her thumb to her lips and started biting at her nail.

“You moved here right after?” Jamie asked.

“Yeah. I didn’t tell anyone, not even my mom. I figured I was good at doing makeup and nails, so maybe I could go to cosmetology school. My dad left me money after he died that I was allowed to have once I turned eighteen, so I used that to get myself started here. Never looked back.” Dani wiped a tear from her cheek and snapped out of her haze, grabbing a tissue and dabbing around her eyes so as not to ruin her makeup.

Jamie’s heart broke for Dani. She wanted to reach out and pull her in for a hug. She looked so small standing before her and Rebecca with tears dripping from her eyelashes.

“Jesus, you really are making me feel better about my situation.” Rebecca stood up and hugged her. “I’m sorry you went through that, Dani. And at such a young age.”

“It’s ok. I’m sorry you’re going through this.” Dani wrapped her arms around Rebecca.

“I should go talk to him. I’ll see you two later.” She kissed Dani’s cheek and winked at Jamie before leaving the room.

Dani sniffled and wiped her eyes with another tissue. “Shit, I messed up my makeup.”

Jamie stood from the couch and put her finger under Dani’s chin so she could examine her face. “Looks fine to me.” She whispered. “Still looks beautiful.” She took the tissue from Dani’s hand and gently dabbed at the corners of her eyes.

Dani blinked at Jamie, lips slightly parted and her breathing uneven. Her eyes fluttered down to steal a glance at Jamie’s pink lips.

“Is this part of the reason why you bailed on your weddin’?” Jamie mumbled.

Dani bit back a smile and slightly nodded. “Yes.” She whispered.

“Hm, who would’ve thought.” Jamie smirked. She leaned forward and nuzzled her nose against Dani’s cheek. Dani closed her eyes and sucked in a sharp breath at the feeling of Jamie breathing against her lips. She placed her hands on Jamie’s shoulders and pulled her closer.

A knock on the door caused the two of them to jump apart. “Rebecca?”

“Ah, that’s her mum.” Jamie said, taking a step back. “She went to find Peter.” Jamie called.

Dani softly laughed to herself and turned around to check her makeup in the mirror. After a minor touch up, she grabbed Jamie’s hand and pulled her to the door. “Let’s go dance.”

“Good. I was just about to ask if you wanted to.” Jamie said, following Dani to the dance floor.

“I kind of told the guy who was bothering me before that I couldn't dance with him because my girlfriend would kill him.” Dani muttered.

“Hm, didn’t know I had a girlfriend.” Jamie laughed in surprise.

“Well, I actually said you’d murder him. It was just to get him away from me.” Dani said, looking around for said guy.

Jamie began laughing hysterically again. “Stop, please. My abs hurt from laughing so much before, I can’t take anymore.” Dani smiled and laughed along with Jamie. She pulled Jamie into her and wrapped her arms around her, swaying them to the music. “I’ll murder him if you want.” She shrugged, trying to be nonchalant about the fact that this gorgeous woman was holding her.

“That’s ok.” Dani waved off. “I see him over there. Looks like he’s about to wet himself.”

Jamie turned around and spotted the guy who Dani was talking about. She glared at him and threw her middle finger up at him, laughing as he quickly turned away. “Jesus, what a pussy.”

Dani laughed and rested her head on Jamie’s shoulder, allowing the brunette to take the lead. Jamie placed her hands on the small of Dani’s back while Dani wrapped her arms around Jamie’s shoulders. She smiled as she listened to Dani softly sing along to the music. After a few songs, the two of them decided to leave the dance floor for a drink.

“Hey, let me take a few photos of you guys.” Jamie recognized the woman as one of Rebecca’s friends.

“Oh, hey, Viola. I’m sorry, I didn’t see you earlier. Would’ve said hello.” Jamie politely smiled.

“That’s ok, Jamie. It’s been an eventful day.” She smiled. “Get with your girlfriend, and let me take a picture of you two. You both look stunning.”

Jamie stuttered and looked between Viola and Dani. Dani rolled her eyes with a laugh and pulled Jamie close to her. Jamie took a deep breath and settled into Dani’s side, wrapping her arm around her waist and resting her hand on her hip. She had to bite her tongue to keep herself from making any noise at how good it felt to be hip to hip with Dani.

The two of them smiled for a few pictures before Viola handed the phone to them. “These are so cute, babe.” Dani smirked, poking Jamie in the ribs.

Jamie jumped and glared at Dani, her eyes softening upon seeing the pictures. “These are really cute.” She mumbled. “Wait a damn minute. Are you taller than me?”

Viola laughed at the banter between them and promised to send them to Jamie before walking away. “Hm, looks like I am.” Dani teased.

Jamie looked down and scoffed. “It’s those bloody heels. I don’t even know how you walk around in those.”

“Please, my mom was forcing me to wear them at ten years old. I’m a pro now.” Dani shrugged.

“Do you like wearin’ them?” Jamie asked. She couldn’t imagine anyone enjoying wearing things that could break their ankles at any second.

“Not when I was little, but I do now. Although, my feet are kind of hurting. Maybe we can go sit down?” Dani winced.

Jamie quickly nodded and led Dani out the door. “Was gettin’ kind of hot in there. And I kind of need a smoke.” Dani nodded and sat down on one of the stone steps. Jamie sat next to her and pulled a carton of cigarettes out of her jacket pocket. She placed one between her lips and grabbed her lighter. As she lit her cigarette, she tried to hide a smirk at the fact that Dani was watching her closely.

“Want one?” She offered, tilting the carton towards Dani.

“No, thank you.” She pulled her shoes off and sighed, resting her feet on the cool stone steps.

Jamie smoked her cigarette and stared up at the stars. She tried not to focus on the way she could feel Dani’s eyes burning into the side of her head. Dani bit her lip as she watched Jamie breathe smoke out around the cigarette hanging loosely between her lips. Jamie’s eyebrows rose when she felt Dani tug the cigarette from her mouth. She turned her head and watched Dani take a small drag, blowing the smoke out with a small cough.

“Offered you your own.” Jamie softly laughed.

“I know, but I can’t smoke a whole one of these alone. I only get the urge when I’ve been drinking.” Dani shrugged, taking another drag. “Plus, it’s more fun to share it.”

Jamie nodded and took the cigarette from Dani. “Yeah, I guess. These things are disgustin’, don’t get me wrong, but… I don’t know what it is about sharin’ one. Feels less lonely.”

Dani’s eyes softened and she scooted closer to Jamie, resting her head on Jamie’s shoulder. Jamie sat as still as she could, not wanting Dani to think she wasn’t welcomed. She slowly inched her arm around Dani’s waist and pulled her closer as they looked at the stars.

“Feels so good to have those damn shoes off.” Dani mumbled.

Jamie put the cigarette out on the steps and leaned back. “Put ‘em here.” She patted her lap.

“What?” Dani looked over at her with a confused look on her face.

“Your feet. You’ve massaged mine. Let me give you one.” She offered. Dani slowly nodded and turned her body, carefully placing her feet in Jamie’s lap. Jamie grabbed Dani’s right foot and began massaging, smiling at how Dani’s eyelids fluttered shut.

“Feel good?” Jamie asked.

“Feels amazing.” Dani sighed. “No one’s ever done this for me before.”

“I don’t believe that.” Jamie softly laughed. “You work in a fuckin’ salon.”

“I mean, I’ve paid for it before. But, no one’s ever done it just because. No one’s ever offered.” Jamie stared at her in shock. How could someone not want to make this woman feel good? How could someone listen to her say she’s in pain and not want to fix it? How could someone not want to have their hands all over her?

Jamie tutted and began massaging Dani’s left foot. “You need better people in your life.”

“I do. I already got rid of all the shitty ones, though.” Dani smiled with her eyes closed. “And I’ve got you.” She opened her eyes and a blush spread across her cheeks.

Jamie stared at her with her lips slightly parted, slowly turning up at the corners. “Yeah, you do. You’ve got me.”

The two looked up as people started leaving the venue. Dani pulled her feet off Jamie’s lap and slipped her shoes back on. She grabbed her phone from her purse and gasped. “Jesus, it’s later than I thought. I have to get up early for work tomorrow. Another wedding.”

Jamie sighed and nodded, standing and offering her hand to help Dani off the ground. She allowed Jamie to pull her up and almost fell forward into her. The two lightly laughed and stared into one another’s eyes for what felt like the tenth time that night.

“I should go find Rebecca. Say goodnight.” Dani sighed. Jamie nodded as she watched Dani’s lips move with each word that came from her mouth. “Goodnight, Jamie. I had fun with you today.” She leaned in and lightly kissed Jamie’s cheek.

Jamie felt her face heat up and she smiled at Dani. “I had a great time with you today, Dani. I’ll see you next week, yeah?”

Dani’s face lit up and she smiled wide. “Oh, yeah. I’ll see you then.”

“Can I- Can I hug you?” Jamie winced at how pathetic she sounded. But she had just spent most of the day flirting with Dani and just wanted to feel close to her before she said goodbye.

“Please.” Dani wrapped her arms around Jamie and smiled as she felt Jamie wrap her arms around her as well. Dani breathed in the smell of Jamie’s shampoo while Jamie ran her fingers up and down Dani’s back. They pulled apart when Dani shivered slightly with a quiet laugh.

“Bye, Jamie.” Dani smiled and waved as she walked back into the venue to find Rebecca, painfully breaking eye contact with Jamie.

“Time for another drink.”

Chapter Text

Jamie was arranging a bouquet in the back of her shop when her phone started vibrating. She grumbled and rolled her eyes at the annoyance as she set the flowers down to pull her phone out of her pocket.

“Hello?” She sighed. It was probably some kind of scam call, as the number was unknown.

“Hi, Jamie! It’s Dani. I got your number from Rebecca. Sorry to interrupt your day.” Dani’s cheery tone rang through the phone.

Jamie straightened up quickly and bumped her head on a hanging plant. "Fuckin' flowers." She grumbled, smiling softly when Dani laughed on the other end of the line. “Hi, Dani. How are you?”

“I’m good. How are you?” Dani replied.

“Pretty good. Can’t complain. What can I do for you?” She held the phone between her shoulder and her ear as she finished off the bouquet.

“Well, our power went out at the salon, so we’re closing for the day. So, I’ll have to cancel our appointment tonight.” Dani sighed.

“Oh, that’s unfortunate. Is everything alright?” Jamie pouted to herself. She was really looking forward to seeing Dani tonight. And getting massaged by her.

“Yeah, some electrical issues. I’m not really sure. But, I wanted to see if you wanted to come over after you close since I’m right across the street from you. I can still give you that massage.” Dani sounded nervous as she breathed out all her words.

“Sure. I’d like that.” Jamie smiled. “Should I bring anything over?”

She could practically hear Dani smiling through the phone. “No, just yourself. Make sure to wear something comfortable.”

The two said their goodbyes and Jamie carried on throughout her day with a smile on her face. She’d get to see Dani again. In her flat. She’d be alone with Dani in her flat. Should she bring wine? Was that too implicit? Now that Jamie had Dani’s number, she could text her the pictures from the wedding. She quickly typed out a message to Dani and sent her the photos before getting back to her bouquet. She tried to focus on her work, as she had things that needed to be completed before she closed up for the day. She would talk to Dani later.

Unfortunately, later was taking too long. It felt like time was moving by so slowly. Jamie had a ton of things to do, but every time she finished a task she would check her phone and sigh, realizing not much time had passed. The customers kept her busy, though. They came in and asked her a million questions that she was more than happy to answer. School formals were right around the corner, so after students were let out of school, Jamie was bombarded with teenagers in her shop.

“Her dress is pink or something.” A boy said, nervously looking around the store.

“Alright, well, ask her if it’s definitely pink and I’ll help you find something.” Jamie chuckled, moving on to the next student.

After an hour of loud chatter from clueless boys, Jamie hopped up on the counter. “Alright, listen up. I’ve got red for you, orange and yellow for you, pink and white for you, and some light purple for you.” She read off a paper she had scribbled notes on as she looked at the boys around the room. They all nodded at her, so she clapped her hands together and jumped off the counter.

“Come up and pay, and I’ll give you the date and time when you can pick your flowers up.” She told them all.

Jamie breathed out a laugh after all the students left her shop. She checked the time and smiled wide, as she would be able to close up for the day soon enough. She cleaned up the front room and organized the back, deciding to make a small arrangement to bring to Dani.

Jamie closed for the day at five o’clock. She quickly ran upstairs to change into more comfortable clothes and freshen up. After checking her outfit of gym shorts, a sports bra, and a tank top, she ran downstairs to grab the bouquet she arranged for Dani and walked out of the shop. She crossed the street and checked her phone for Dani’s flat number before ringing the bell and waiting to be let in.

“Come on up, Jamie.” Dani’s cheery voice rang through the speaker. The door buzzed and Jamie pushed it open with a smile. She walked up the stairs and waved when she saw Dani poking her head out of her door. “Hi.” She smiled.

“For you.” She handed Dani the flowers and walked into her flat. “This is nice, Dani.” She turned around and her mouth went dry at the sight. There was Dani in a maroon sports bra and gray yoga shorts. Her hair was pulled up into a messy bun with a few stray pieces loose around her face.

Dani was blushing and smelling the flowers. “Thank you, Jamie. These are beautiful. Let me put them in a vase.”

Once Jamie picked her jaw up off the floor, she took her shoes off while Dani situated the bouquet in the vase and set it on her dining table. “Can I get you anything? Water? Tea?” Dani offered once she pulled back.

“I’ll take some tea, thanks. Wanna see if it’s as bad as people say it is.” Jamie laughed.

Dani playfully rolled her eyes and walked into the kitchen. “Come tell me what I’m doing wrong. Everyone always has something to say about it, but can never tell me how to do it right.”

Jamie followed Dani into the kitchen and watched as she filled the kettle and set it on the stove. “How was work today? Did you lose power? Oh, well, obviously you didn’t because I didn’t.” Dani nervously laughed.

Jamie found her nervousness cute and softly smiled. “No, I didn’t lose power. Even if I did though, made sure to have a small generator so my plants won’t die. Some of ‘em have to stay in a cooler environment, so I have some refrigeration goin’ on.” Jamie explained. “Was kind of busy today, though. I guess school formal is comin’ up, so I had a bunch of teenage boys in my shop puttin’ their orders in. Clueless, really.”

Dani laughed and nodded. “Oh, yeah. I’m booked next week, so all the girls can get their nails and makeup done.”

“Ugh, good luck with that.” Jamie laughed.

“Did you go to prom? School formal? Whatever you guys call it.” Dani rolled her eyes. She took the kettle off the stove and poured the boiled water into two mugs.

“Nah, I dropped out. Got my GCE later on.” Jamie nodded. She took a deep breath and let her shoulders drop. “Had a bit of a rough childhood.”

Dani looked at Jamie the whole time she spoke. Jamie wouldn’t lie and say it didn’t make her feel scared, but it also felt nice to know that someone was really listening to you.

“I’m sorry, Jamie. I’m all ears if you want to talk about it.” Dani offered with a small smile, dropping the tea bags into the mugs.

“Thanks. Maybe another time. Bit of a long story.” Jamie shrugged.

“Hopefully, this massage will feel really good. A lot of people say that these kinds of massages help them while they deal with unresolved traumas. Not that yours are unresolved, but- well, you know what I mean.” Dani blushed. “There was an instructor from Thailand who came to London when I was still living there and gave a week-long seminar. So, I took it and I got really into his practice and threw myself into studying it. I really want to go to Thailand someday and see him practice there. Try to learn some more. But, I know enough now to offer it as a service.” Dani explained.

Jamie smiled as she listened to Dani talk. She was so passionate about what she did and Jamie loved it. She loved the spark in Dani’s eyes and how she got so excited to talk about her work that she stumbled over her words at times. “Well, I can’t wait. Maybe I’ll be able to sleep tonight.”

“I have a feeling you will.” Dani smiled, blushing even harder. “You know… because it’s supposed to be really relaxing.”

Jamie laughed and nodded. “I got it, Dani.”

Dani nodded and looked down at the floor, trying to calm the redness in her cheeks. “Tea?” She smiled after a few seconds.

“See, the problem is it’s been steepin’ for too long.” Jamie explained.

“Well, why didn’t you say anything?” Dani laughed, pulling the tea bags out of the mugs and grabbing milk from the fridge. The two women assembled their tea and Jamie watched with an amused look on her face how Dani dumped too much sugar into her mug.

“What did I do wrong now?” Dani sighed.

“Put a load of sugar in there. Won’t even be able to taste the tea now, Dani.” Jamie teased. “Also, did you give me this mug on purpose?” She raised an eyebrow.

Dani looked at the Live, Laugh, Lesbian mug she handed Jamie and burst out laughing. “Oh my god. I’m sorry. I wasn’t paying attention to the mugs.”

Jamie laughed and took a sip with a small wince. “Very strong. Love the mug, though.” She winked.

Dani’s cheeks heated up again as she laughed, tears pooling in her eyes. “I’m so sorry. One of my friends from cosmetology school got that for me. She mailed it to me because she found it in a store and it made her think of me.”

“‘Course, you tell people you’re gay one time and the only gifts they give you are pride flags and gay merch they find at the shops.” Jamie laughed with a roll of her eyes.

“Very true.” Dani smiled with a sip of her tea. Jamie smiled at Dani and watched her sip her tea. “I think this tastes fine. I don’t care what you guys think.”

“I’ll show you how to do it properly next time.” Jamie laughed, setting the mug down.

“Alright, massage time. Let’s go.” Dani led Jamie to a room down the hall. “This is my meditation room.” She said, grabbing a yoga mat and rolling it out on the floor. “This might be easier if you take your shirt off. If you’re comfortable just being in your bra. No worries if you don’t want to.” She kneeled on the yoga mat and smiled up at Jamie.

Jamie blinked at her and nodded with a gulp, grabbing the hem of her top and pulling it over her head. Dani watched breathlessly as Jamie’s abs flexed, blinking up once Jamie dropped her shirt to the floor. The two of them nervously chuckled until Jamie walked over and kneeled on the yoga mat in front of Dani, their knees just barely touching.

“I’ll explain how this massage is going to go.” Dani said, voice just above a whisper. She and Jamie were staring into one another’s eyes as she spoke. “This is called a somatic massage. The main focus is on the body’s nervous system, so if you start laughing or shaking or crying don’t worry. I’m kind of expecting that to happen. You’re ok with me touching you, right?”

Jamie cleared her throat and nodded. “Yeah, Dani. You can touch me.”

Dani softly smiled. “Good. My hands will mostly be on your head, neck, shoulders, chest, and arms. If you’re uncomfortable at any point just let me know, ok?” Jamie could have cried on the spot with how gentle Dani was being with her and she hadn’t even started massaging her yet. “I’m going to have you lay down and close your eyes. Try to relax all of your muscles. Like you’re melting into the floor. If you’re having trouble, try tensing all your muscles and then release them. Sometimes that helps when I feel like I can’t relax on the spot.”

Jamie laid down and closed her eyes, listening to Dani softly tiptoe around the room. She turned on quiet, instrumental music and opened the window a crack. “Are you ok with aromatherapy? Are there any scents that make you feel sick?”

“Do whatever you need to do, Dani. Not much bothers me.” Jamie said, trying to relax as much as she could. Dani moved around the room for a few more minutes until she walked back over to Jamie and kneeled next to the mat.

“Are you having trouble relaxing?” Dani softly asked.

“Yeah. I usually can’t, but I’m also kind of nervous. Don’t really know what to expect.” Jamie sighed, opening her eyes.

“Can I try something?” Dani asked.

Jamie nodded and gulped as she watched Dani move down to her feet. “Ok, I want you to focus on where my hands are. Wherever you feel them, put all your attention there.”

Jamie nodded and waited for Dani to put her hands on her. She started at her ankles, wrapping her fingers around them and resting her warm palms right above her feet. Jamie let out a deep breath and tried to focus. Dani slowly moved her hands up and rested them on Jamie’s shins, fingers wrapping halfway around her calves. Then she slowly worked up to Jamie’s knees, resting her palms on her kneecaps.

“Doing ok?” Dani softly asked.

Jamie nodded and hummed, breath catching in her throat when Dani’s hands slid up to her thighs. She bit her tongue and tried to stay as still as possible. Eventually, Dani’s hands slid up to her hips, thumbs gently resting on her hip bones. She jumped slightly at this, biting her lip hard when Dani’s hands held her down to the mat.

“Is this ok?” Jamie nodded again and let out a shaky breath. Dani’s hands traveled up to her waist, fingertips resting on Jamie’s ribs. Then, her hands were on Jamie’s chest, right above her breasts. “I can feel how fast your heart is beating. Are you ok?” Dani softly asked.

Jamie opened her eyes to Dani’s face hovering over hers. She nodded and let out a breath of air. “You make me nervous, Dani.”

Dani softly smiled and moved her hands to Jamie’s shoulders, which traveled down her arms and finally rested in her own hands. Instinctively, Jamie curled her fingers around Dani’s, who squeezed her fingers back with a quiet laugh.

“Feeling more relaxed?” Dani asked, sitting up right.

Jamie looked towards the ceiling and took a deep breath. “Yeah, I think so.”

Dani nodded and took Jamie’s hands in her, helping her come to a seated position. “Is it ok if we start?”

Jamie bit her lip and nodded, avoiding eye contact with Dani. Why did she already have tears in her eyes? The massage hadn’t even started yet.

Dani rubbed Jamie’s shoulder. “Whatever you’re feeling right now… Just let it out. It’s ok, Jamie.” She kneeled behind Jamie and held her arms, lifting them above her head. “I’m just going to lean back and stretch your arms a bit. Just relax and let me move you.” She said softly next to Jamie’s ear. Jamie let out a deep breath and allowed Dani to move her body, swaying left and right, pulling backwards.

Dani let Jamie’s arms down and trailed her fingers up her shoulders and neck, up into her hair. She dug her fingers into the tense muscles and gently pulled Jamie’s head up, threading her fingers through her soft curls. She did this a few times before she felt Jamie truly relax. Dani smiled when Jamie’s head fell back into her, her shoulders and neck loosening up.

“You can rest on me.” Dani murmured, running her fingers down Jamie’s shoulders. She ran her hands along Jamie’s collar bones and pulled Jamie into her more, wrapping her arms around her shoulders and neck.

Jamie felt her eyelids getting heavy as she rested against Dani, feeling her hands all over her and listening to her soft breaths in her ear. Whatever Dani was doing right now felt like a strong hug, one Jamie hadn’t felt in a while. If ever. Tears sprang to her eyes again and she let out a shaky breath, biting her lip as she felt a sob travel up her throat.

Dani moved one hand between Jamie’s breasts down towards her abdomen, sliding it back up and resting it on her shoulder. She did this a few times, alternating hands until she took Jamie’s arms and crossed them at her chest. Dani held her wrists and pulled her back against her, so it wasn’t only Dani hugging her this time, but Jamie was hugging herself as well.

Dani spent time massaging Jamie’s shoulders and then ran her fingers down Jamie’s back, kneading the tense muscles there. Jamie was half asleep and half in tears, feeling Dani use her whole body to help relax her. The session came to an end and Dani finished by running her fingers through Jamie’s hair again and adjusting her neck. She ran her hands across her chest one last time and pulled Jamie towards her body.

She smiled at how Jamie rested against the front of her body once their time had ended. “Jamie.” She whispered. “Are you asleep?” Dani gently rubbed Jamie’s arms and shoulders as she talked to her.

“Mm, I’m awake. Just barely.” She let out a watery laugh and sniffled. Dani looked down at her and softly smiled. Jamie was resting her head backwards against Dani’s chest. She delicately brushed Jamie’s hair off her forehead and traced her face with her fingers.

“Feeling ok?” She asked when she noticed the tears dripping from the sides of Jamie’s eyes.

“Yeah. I can’t explain it. I feel kind of… raw.” Jamie croaked. She slowly sat up and put her face in her hands. “Sorry, I tried to hold it in.”

“No, no. I don’t want you to hold it in. You’re supposed to let it out. It helps you relax and let go of all that tension.” Dani sat next to her and rubbed her back. “Do you want to talk about it?”

“Kind of.” Jamie whispered. “I just don’t very often, so I need a minute.”

“Come with me. I’ll get you some tissues and we can sit on the couch.” Dani helped Jamie off the floor and led her to the living room. “Sit here. I’ll be right back.” She sat Jamie down and wrapped a thin blanket around her shoulders.

Dani came back a few minutes later with a glass of water and some tissues. “Here you go.” She sat next to Jamie and crossed her legs, their knees touching slightly. “Do you need anything else?”

Jamie looked over at Dani who was looking back at her with a soft expression. Dani’s heart broke at the tears in Jamie’s eyes. “Can I have a hug?” She whispered.

Dani wrapped her arms around Jamie without hesitation and rubbed her back, softly rocking her when Jamie let out a sob. They stayed there for a few minutes until Jamie pulled back and wiped her eyes with a tissue.

“Sorry for cryin’ so much.” She choked out a laugh.

“Jamie, please. Don’t apologize.” Dani shook her head.

“I haven’t had someone touch me like that in a while. Not sure if anyone ever has really. Didn’t realize how much I was missin’ human affection.” She shrugged. “My mum never even hugged me like that.”

“I’m so sorry, Jamie.” Dani sighed.

“I used to say it didn’t bother me, but it always has. As I get older, I realize how much I needed it. That’s why kids shouldn’t be allowed to have kids.” Jamie took a sip of water and wiped her eyes again.

“Do you have siblings?” Dani asked.

“Got two brothers. I’m the middle one, if you couldn’t tell.” Jamie laughed. Dani softly chuckled, shaking her head. “Not in touch with my older brother. We lost contact after our mom left. My younger brother was adopted by Rebecca’s parents. I was too old to be adopted at that point, but I’d visit him and that’s when I met Rebecca.” Jamie explained.

“I’m glad that you guys have each other.” Dani smiled.

“Yeah, she’s the sister I never had. Whenever she goes to visit her parents, I go with her to see Mikey. Feels like a real family.” Jamie smiled with a sniffle.

“Thank you for sharing that with me.” Dani said.

“Thanks for gettin’ it out of me. I feel really good right now. Even though I’m cryin’.” Jamie said, reaching for Dani’s hand. She squeezed her hand and smiled at her.

“Anytime, Jamie.” Dani squeezed her hand back.

“How much do I owe you?” Jamie asked, reaching for her wallet.

“Oh, no. You don’t owe me a thing.” Dani shook her head.

“Dani, come on. That was the best thing I’ve ever experienced. Let me pay you.” Jamie insisted.

Dani smacked Jamie’s hand away from her wallet. “No, Jamie. I had to switch up your appointment. I know it probably threw you off a little. No charge. Don’t worry about it.”

“Ok, well, how about I take you out for dinner sometime then?” Jamie offered, feeling the heat rush to her cheeks.

Dani looked at Jamie with her lips parted. She closed her mouth and let out a small laugh. “Like a date?”

Jamie smiled with a small shrug. “Yeah, I’d love to take you out. Get to know you some more.”

“I would really like that.” Dani nodded.

“Good. You let me know when you’re free and we can work out a time.” Jamie said.

Eventually, the two were left to say goodbye to one another, but neither knew how. They stood in front of Dani’s door once Jamie had gotten her shoes on, staring into one another’s eyes with small smiles on their faces. Dani looked down and a small blush appeared across her cheeks at the sight of Jamie still in her sports bra.

“Oh, Jamie. Your shirt.” Dani laughed. “Let me get it.” She walked back into her meditation room and found Jamie’s shirt in the corner. She leaned down to get it and once she stood back up and turned around, she found Jamie standing in the doorway.

“Here you go.” She said just above a whisper, handing Jamie’s shirt back to her.

Jamie took the shirt and dropped it to the floor, wrapping an arm around Dani’s waist and pulling her close. “Dani.” She whispered.

Dani briefly closed her eyes and let out a small breath. “Yeah?”

Jamie nuzzled her nose against Dani’s cheek just like she had at the wedding. “I really wanna kiss you.”

“Thank god.” Dani leaned in and pressed her lips to Jamie’s, softly moaning as she tangled her fingers in her soft curls. Jamie pulled Dani even closer and deepened the kiss by tracing her tongue along Dani’s bottom lip. Dani opened her mouth and pressed her tongue against Jamie’s, smiling at the moan that escaped Jamie’s throat. They stood there, arms wrapped tightly around each other and tongues sliding against one another’s for what felt like five seconds and an eternity all at once.

They both pulled back to take a breath, staring into each other’s darkened eyes. “I hope you don’t think this is something I do with my clients.” Dani joked.

Jamie softly laughed and shook her head. “I’ll be sure to leave a good review.” She leaned in and pecked Dani’s lips three times. “I know, Dani. I wasn’t thinkin’ this was a regular thing for you.”

Dani rolled her eyes and pulled Jamie in for another kiss. “We should just have our date tonight.” She mumbled against Jamie’s lips.

“Yeah?” Jamie smiled, trailing kisses from Dani’s chin to her neck.

Dani let her head drop back to expose more of her neck for Jamie. “Yeah. I don’t even care where we go.” She softly moaned and tugged Jamie closer by her hair. “My bed?”

Jamie groaned and bit down on Dani’s neck, causing the blonde to gasp. She pulled away from Dani’s neck breathlessly and shook her head. “Wanna do this right with you. I like you.” Dani smiled and rested her forehead against Jamie’s. “But, let’s go now. I don’t think we’ll make it out if we stand here doin’ this for any longer.”

Dani held Jamie’s face in her hands and kissed her a few more times before going to find a shirt for herself in her room. Jamie waited in the hall, not wanting to invade her personal space, and smiled when Dani came out in a black sweatshirt. Jamie slipped her tank top back on and held out her hand for Dani.

“I brought you one too. It’s going to be cold out there.” She handed Jamie a gray sweatshirt and smiled when Jamie tugged it on with a bashful thanks. “You look really cute in my clothes.” Dani took her hand and pulled Jamie into her body, wrapping her arms around her waist. She smiled at Jamie before leaning in for another kiss. “Where should we go?”

“I don’t know. Didn’t plan on gettin’ this far tonight.” Jamie laughed. “Do you have a favorite place?”

“I do, actually. It’s a few blocks away.” Dani led Jamie into the kitchen, so she could grab her keys and wallet to slip into her pocket.

“Great. It’s a nice night, so we’ll get to enjoy it. Maybe kiss under the stars a little.” Jamie winked.

Dani smiled excitedly and squeezed Jamie’s hand. “We’re definitely going to do that.”
