Sunny felt wrong. Today was an off day, that much he knew. The blankets felt itchy, the dim lights too bright, and the pencil he was sketching with was far too hard in his fingertips. His stomach twisted into knots, as his fingers met his hair, slowly yanking and pulling to try to ground himself.
His Mother was away on a work trip. Their relationship had gotten better over time. Once they moved away, he worked to try to get out of his shell a bit more. Now that he was working on healing, things had gotten a bit easier. He had mended things up with his old friends from Faraway town. It took them all time to adjust. To forgive, and heal. But slowly, very slowly, things started to get better.
It had been a year since he moved. He wasn’t that far from Faraway town. A good forty-five minutes at most. He couldn’t help but think. His friends, over the year, encouraged him to call, and text. Especially his boyfriend, Kel. Kel was the first one to come around after he and Basil talked about what happened. Kel had been the one to drag him out of his room. Kel had essentially saved him from himself. It was no wonder that he would fall for him.
It was getting to the point where he was starting to spiral. He needed to act fast before he didn’t act at all. He pulled up his chat with Kel.
“hey r u buzy”
Sunny couldn’t help but chuckle as he immediately saw Kel typing back.
“not at all! whats up :c”
Sunny hesitated, his fingers trembling as they hovered over his flip phone.
“fizzing out”
That was their key phrase for when Sunny began to feel little.
“ do you need me to come over? :O”
“yez”
“stay in your room”
“go sleepies ok?”
“ok”
Sunny placed his phone on his nightstand and sighed. He cuddled closer into his bed and reached for his teddy bear that Kel had gotten him. It still smelled just a little bit like his boyfriend. He breathed in deeply, smelling the bear to calm himself. It smelled like orange joe, which made Sunny smile. As he drifted off, he breathed deeply, missing his boyfriend.
There was a quiet knock at the bedroom door that woke Sunny up. As he rose, his head felt even more fuzzy than before. He stood, giving a good stretch, then drowsily making his way to his bedroom door.
He swung it open and gasped, as his boyfriend greeted him.
“Hi Sunny!” He cheered, bringing him in for a tight hug. The hug was exactly what Sunny needed. Kel’s hugs weren’t ever overwhelming. There was just enough pressure to ground him, and keep him in the moment as well as making him feel so safe, so small in Kel’s arms. He felt protected with him, safe from the world and even himself.
Sunny sniffled, finally having what he needed. Kel noticed and smiled, “Let’s get you all set ok?”
Sunny nodded, and let himself be moved about. Kel sat him on the edge of his bed, as he grabbed Sunny his favorite outfit. It was one of Kel’s oversized orange hoodies, and a pair of fluffy black shorts. Kel changed him gently, as Sunny went limp and happily let his boyfriend take over. Sunny sighed happily as Kel slipped the sweater over his head. He smiled as he flopped his hands around, the long sleeves hanging. Once his shorts were on Kel smiled.
“There you go! Oh look at my little Sunny Bunny, all sweet and cute.” Kel cooed. Sunny beamed, the nickname very welcome. He kicked his feet, as Kel showered him with kisses. “You’re just so cute I could just eat you up.” Kel grinned.
Sunny suddenly had an idea, he quickly tapped at Kel as a sign to release him. Once Kel obliged, he went into the bottom drawer of his nightstand. He grabbed out his Captain Spaceboy action figure, and a doll with bright pink pigtails and cute dress. He handed the Spaceboy figure to Kel, and smiled.
“You wanna play, little bunny?” Kel questioned. Sunny nodded, and plopped himself on the floor, tugging at Kel’s shorts in order to convince him to sit too. “Sounds good to me!” Kel too made a spot for himself on the floor.
“Princess, I’ve come to take you away on my adventures. My crew and I need you…” Kel sighed dramatically, as he waved Captain Spaceboy around.
Sunny made a noise of disappointment, as he turned his dolly away from Spaceboy. “Nuh-uh!”
Kel gasped. “What do you mean you can’t because you want to focus on your acting career?!”
Sunny giggled, as he made his dolly nod. The thing about playing with Kel, is that when Sunny was nonverbal he made their stories so much better. It was so easy to play because Kel always knew what made him happy.
“We both know that’s not sustainable! We have twelve kittens and twenty puppies back home, we need to support them somehow…The only way we can is if we steal and become space pirates!” Kel cried out.
Sunny continued to giggle as their game continued…
Sunny was zoning out as Kel kept playing. After a moment, he heard Kel drop his toy, and he felt his hand press against his cheek.
“Is everything alright sunshine?” Kel cooed.
Sunny whines, as he presses his palm into Kel’s hand. He doesn’t know what he wants right now. All he knows is he doesn’t feel right. He pouts as he looks to the other boy.
Kel just puckers his lips, “Aw is my Sunny Bunny getting all fussy-wussy?” He coos out. Kel reaches over to kiss his head. Sunny whines out an agreement. He is feeling all fussy. He just wants Kel to cuddle him and be with him and-
The tears start falling faster than Sunny even realizes. Suddenly everything is crashing down and he’s crying into Kel’s arms like there’s no tomorrow. He hiccups as his boyfriend envelopes him in a big, tight hug.
“Oh there, there sunshine. Everything’s gonna be ok.” Kel hushes out in a soothing voice. “My little baby, sweet little boy.” As Kel is whispering to him in his sweet, baby talk voice, Sunny realizes that this is what he wanted all along. His sniffles die down, as Kel rocks them back and forth; further soothing Sunny.
As if on cue, his tears dry. Kel laughs above him. “This is what you needed, isn’t it, oh isn’t it my little Sunny Bunny baby boy…You just needed me to baby you. Just need attention huh?”
Sunny nods, as his thumb makes it into his mouth. Kel keeps making him feel tinier by the second. As Kel continues to rock him, his eyes grow heavy.
“You’re probably all fussy too because you need a nap. Babies need a lot of sleep, and you’re just so little aren’t you?” Kel hums. He easily picks Sunny up and puts him down on the bed. But there’s something he needs before he goes to bed! He whines, and bounces unhappily. He tries to reach over Kel, but he’s quickly stopped.
“No, no sunshine. It’s naptime.” Kel soothes, pushing Sunny back down.
He whines. He doesn’t know how to tell Kel!
Kel thinks above him, then presses a hand to his head. “Can you use big boy words? Just one or two.” He asks.
Sunny frowns. It’s a really big ask at the moment. But Kel is asking so nice! He takes a big breath in. “‘Tory.” He mumbles out, hoping that the other will understand.
Kel smiles, “You want a story?” Sunny nods happily, his whole tune changing. “Sounds good to me.” Kel reaches into the same drawer where his toys were, and pulls out the boon Goodnight Moon.
As Kel begins to read, Sunny breathes deeply. He’s so happy. These moments of peace, of joy, are worth being alive for. This right here, feeling safe with Kel, makes every day just a bit easier.
