Chapter Text

The moon. The familiarity, the cold, the glow. The moon was my first sight and maybe my last. When I opened my eyes the light of the glaring moon shot back at me making me painfully aware of the stinging pain that began to awake with my consciousness. I hear noises; voices. They’re close, they’re yelling at me. My ears ring and my head is full of a clouded noise, the only thing I see is the clear dark sky, and the full moon; It’s as if it has me in a trance. I can’t move, I can’t speak. I only feel. I only see. The feelings rush into me as if I’m taking my first breath of air out of the water. The grass poking into my skin, the cold breeze that accompanies the night air, the warm hand that shakes my arm, the wounds on my legs that spill warm blood, the wrenching feeling in my stomach, and the pounding in my head. I try to think, to understand. Where am I, what happened to me, who's speaking to me. Who am I? The racing thoughts are cut short when I gain the ability to hear clearly. This voice is familiar but not the same familiarity as the bright orb that my eyes are easily fixated on. The voice is frantic, worried, soft, but pleading. Who is this person to me? They say what seems to be a name but I do not hear it. They ask me to move, and jolt my arm more harshly this time; it hurts. She speaks again but this time I’m able to make out the words clearly, as well as the exhaustion and desperation in her voice.

“Please, move. Wake up. We’re out of time —— get up I’m begging you.”

Although I could hear them clearly I felt as if I had missed something again, like she had said a name. Whatever it was, it was like my brain was censoring it from me. The more I thought and tried to recall a memory of a name, or of this voice my ears rang louder, my head pounded as if being crushed. Before I could regain some composure from all the sudden pain, I noticed something had changed. The tight grip on my hand had disappeared and the pleading had ceased. Did she give up and abandon me? I doubt that when I hear the sound of a sharpened blade being lifted from flesh. The sound is familiar but foreign at the same time. I try to move my arm and nothing but pain comes. My eyes they’re stuck on the moon on top of me. I’m clueless and unaware. I’m vulnerable. Whatever had just killed the woman who clung to me was coming for me next. A tall figure appears above me, clouding the moon's bright light with darkness and the red of blood. A shadow follows them, they completely cover the moon bringing darkness wherever they loom. I do not see the shadowed figure but instead I hear him; his voice is cold, lifeless, and carries such a heavy and dark tone that it vibrates it my ears.

“Fascinating.”

I feel the already intense atmosphere intensify by a glare that I don’t have to see to feel the weight that it carries .

“How unfortunate. This one is troublesome to kill, leave them be.”

What? Why do they spare me, have they killed more than the woman who lies next to me? Who are they? Who is he? The seemingly dead woman next to me speaks. A soft and desperate whisper, that I clearly hear but I do not hear at all, at the same time. “—— may the Venerable guide you. Save us all.” The sound of a blade interrupted her sentence. The man pulls the blade away for the second time, when he speaks his curiosity is replaced with annoyance. “Tsk. Don’t place their life in the hands of the Venerable. Incompetent, mortals.” His last word was spoken with venom, a whisper of death. The moon. It glows golden now, full of warmth opposed to the coldness of the pale light, and the scorching heat of the man's darkness. This is my last sight. I died here tonight, as the cold took over and my consciousness slipped away.
