The cat's out of the (to-go) bag!

Summary:

Excerpts from Café Mew Mew Yelp reviews: they're a mix of glowing praises, scathing insults, and rampant conspiracy theories. Reading them and the replies from the two owners gives the distinct impression that this place is really, really eccentric.

Took my girlfriend on a date here because she's super girly and she loves cute things and sweets, and hey, new café right, and she’s a huge fan of the Tokyo Mew Mew group. But:

1. We didn’t even get our food before everyone was being told to leave! It was the middle of the day, and we took a super long trip to get here! They have no clear schedule, they just close randomly in a hurry?! I don’t get it!
2. It wasn’t even Tokyo Mew Mew themed?! It was just an over the top maid cafe! Why is it called ‘mew mew’ if there’s no food or costumed waitresses?! So weird and disappointing!!!
3. They tried to give us a complimentary to-go box with random sweets in it, which I guess was nice so I can’t give them just 1 star, but…ugh. I guess we’ll try again some other time.

This place is kinda new and advertised as a maid café, and it’s not really advertised as having ‘entertainment’ I guess you would say, besides the maid gimmick…but the girls are all VERY funny. We only meant to go once because of the convenient location on our route back from school, but me and my friends keep going back because we’ve made it a game to see what funny thing will happen the next time we go. There’s a little middle-schooler (? Is that like, legal?? To have a girl that young working? lol?) who does these totally wild acrobatics on a ball and juggles things!! She did a fire breathing trick once!!! Like, super unexpected for this kind of café, but that’s the appeal! (doesn’t hurt that the food is yummy~) totally quirky and fun even if you’re not a girly girl!

Wasn't happy with our visit. While we were in Japan we wanted to go to at least one iconic 'maid cafe', a novelty you can only get here, and though it looks promising from the outside, the experience was really lackluster. The maids were all in tacky colored dresses that clashed with their hair (no traditional black-colored french maid style?) and we're pretty sure they were high schoolers or younger. The girls were all over the place like they only just started. The place was incredibly loud, full of middle schoolers and high schooler girls as the main customers.

The only pro I have to say about this place is how affordable it was compared to everywhere else we've eaten at so far, and the food was incredible. I only wish they had more than just desserts and drinks, for example some curry or omelets would have been nice. Who wants to eat dessert for a full meal? Only good if you want a snack. Most other cafes in the area at least offer light meal options.

Also, we had to get swapped waitresses because our original girl didn't speak English very well and we could barely hear her! The girl they let take her place could speak English, but was very curt and kept trying to shoo us out, asking if we were done yet every two minutes! So rude!

Um…when I went none of the maids were working. At the maid café? It was late afternoon, so way past school hours if some of the reviews implying that students work here are to be believed, they should have been here…the place was open, but two guys were trying to run the place by themselves when it was packed. The blond guy was using really foul language and was all sweaty and gross. The food was kinda stale, like it was yesterday leftovers or something. Blond guy was really snappy with me about it and seemed to be in a hurry, and I kinda felt bad but wtf was going on. The two star review is me being generous. That extra star is a pity star. Get the girls back please...

This was my first real maid cafe so I wasn't sure what to expect...I knew they come with a show sometimes, but from other reviews of similar places I kind of expected just singing and dancing, but the little boy dressed like an elf being chased around by a monkey girl in a little jumper was a surprise. I think it was a reference I wasn't getting, probably to some anime or Japanese mythology? I wish they had had a guide on the shows; they were both really animated and even the locals were acting like it was some kind of crazy spectacle. I got asked to leave really abruptly along with everyone else, so I guess it was around closing time (couldn't find the hours posted anywhere on the door or signs or anything) but it was weird the kids kept going with the show while we were leaving. Again, probably a cultural thing I wasn't getting. Food was great, though!

The food was wonderful! I ordered the assam tea and split an order of macarons with my mom. The waitress who served us was really a sweetheart, but at times I had a hard time hearing her because she spoke so quietly, and we had to ask her 4 different times to repeat herself! The rest of the café stayed really busy and kind of loud throughout our visit too, but in a fun, lively way! My mom didn’t much appreciate the noise though. ^^;

Uhhh, there was a wild bird flying around inside when we visited? Like a weird little blue bird, I’m not sure what kind. The waitress with the purple hair was calmly trying to talk it into getting off of the ceiling, and the crazy thing is that it worked? It flew right down to her! It was like seeing a real life animal whisperer! We were really impressed by how calmly they handled it. The food was REALLY good, but we were talking about the bird whisperer incident for weeks haha.

THE FOOD. Totally incredible. Service is so-so honestly, the waitress I had was kind of an airhead. But my god these are the BEST pastries in the world. No joke. Confusing layout of the place though, I kinda wandered trying to find a bathroom and ended up in a weird basement? I got shooed out really quickly by some guy in a lab coat. So I think the foods so good because they have food scientists or something down there making formulas for the perfect desserts, lol.

Someone needs to call animal control on this place or something! It sounds crazy but I swear I saw one of the waitresses carrying an iriomote wildcat to one of the back rooms in a hurry! Those things are really endangered wild animals! It wouldn’t surprise me if this café was some kind of front for an animal trafficking ring, with all the other reviews about sporadic hours, animals running around, and randomly being kicked out…

Okay, the café is great, amazing food and drinks, and very nice girls, but I SAW TOKYO MEW MEW HERE! LIVE, IN PERSON!!! It was close to closing time and a huge monster came out of nowhere and they came to fight it!!! I know a lot of people online are saying they’re an idol group hired to advertise some upcoming show or something, but I swear the monster was real and the girls were flying around fighting it for real. No wires or anything! Like, they’re seriously magical! I went and asked the girls who worked there about it afterwards and they were all sweaty and nervous, and were really persistent about NOT talking about Tokyo Mew Mew, so like, I think the lawsuit rumors are legit and this café got sued by Tokyo Mew Mew over theming and they can’t talk about it, so I felt bad for asking… AWESOME experience though.

Man, my girlfriend drags me here all the time and I tolerate it, but that redhead waitress being such a klutz was getting on my nerves for months. I figured they finally canned her because I didn't see her this time, but then we got waited on by a new blonde girl who's somehow EVEN MORE OF AN AIRHEAD. Where do they FIND these girls?! Seriously, she didn't know what she was doing at all, was it her first day or something?? I wanted to skip out on the bill because her service was so bad, but the purple haired girl cornered me and asked if I'd forgotten anything, so I ended up paying after all... OMG I know I’m not the only one who visited because of the conspiracies abt this place all over the forums and mewtube right?? From animal trafficking that involves the girls, to yakuza involvement to the theorized idea that they were originally supposed to be tokyo mew mew themed but got hit with copyright lawsuits and had to go generic (imo this one is SO far fetched bc whatever company does the tokyo mew mew publicity stunts still hasnt come forth to started monetizing them or announced a show or anything and its been months, all the merch is still bootlegged so why would they care abt a themed cafe making profits too? Then again, why have ‘mew mew’ in the name if you’re not talking about cat-theming OR tokyo mew mew??!) but its SO crazy lately, the place has been SWARMING with people who im sure have also seen these theories! The things people have supposedly seen here are wild!

I was really kind of annoyed because by the time I managed to finally get in and get seated it was…normal? Completely uneventful! The waitress I had was kinda ditzy, honestly, giggling and blushing and talking to the other waitresses about her boyfriend… I DONT think someone like that could be involved in serious stuff like those theories said. I don't really like sweets much, so I didn't plan to go here until I read some of the crazy theories on that 'Saint Rose' forum thing that all my friends have been going nuts over. And I totally do believe this cafe is affiliated with Tokyo Mew Mew. Specifically, the theory that they were originally gonna be Tokyo Mew Mew themed, but Tokyo Mew Mew wouldn't let them! When I went, it was totally obviously they were color coordinated like Tokyo Mew Mew is! ...They got a red girl instead of a pink themed girl though, and the hair styles aren't quite right...it's just close enough you can kinda see that was probably the original idea! These girls aren't as cute as Tokyo Mew Mew, but that would be pretty hard to match... (I think by comparing photos I've seen online, the Tokyo Mew Mew girls are taller and older too! Hard to really compare because the cafe doesn't let you take photos of the waitresses, only the food.) Anyway, I think it's really bogus that Tokyo Mew Mew wouldn't let them do a tribute to them offically! How horrible! These girls were perfectly nice, and I guess if you like sweets it's good food? The tea and the conversation was the real stand out for me! My waitress was kind enough to reccomend me some tea that was more on the bitter side like I prefer, and she seemed to really know her stuff about tea. I got this really delicious imported stuff and ugh, to die for. Really cool place! In fact, they don't even NEED to use Tokyo Mew Mew cosplay, their little theme of all the girls looking like fruits was way cool! Screw you, Tokyo Mew Mew!

I've been coming here since they opened, and somehow the review above mine was the first time I considered this cafe had a FRUIT THEME WITH THE GIRLS' COSTUMES?! I always thought they were just going for a general 'cute, colorful rainbow' theme or something, but oh my gosh, that's why they have so many cute fruit-themed foods, too! I think the girls are themed after: Cherry, Banana, Lime, Blueberry, and Plum? There's a new girl too recently, who might be Apricot or Lemon themed? For the sake of clarity I'll be calling her Apricot. The two boy waiters don't have themed costumes but just wear typical male waiter costumes which is SO boring honestly. (They're both really nice though so this is probably a management choice issue.)

Anyway, to anyone leaving bad reviews, it's because your experience depends really heavily on WHO is serving you. I've gone here with my friends enough that I've seen just about everyone, so if you're able to, pick someone who matches your tastes! My impression of all the girls as a regular:

  • Cherry- currently seems to be taking a break from the place, but if she comes back... she's really bubbly and friendly, but she kind of gets distracted and can forget to check on your table sometimes or spill your stuff because she kinda seems to have her head in the clouds.
  • Blueberry- classy girl who knows a lot about tea, so if thats why you're visiting, talk to her. She did take a break once right after seating us, and one of the other girls had to bring us our food and wait on us...while we watched her sit two tables away and sip on tea. Honestly kind of funny.
  • Lime- WHY DOES THIS GIRL GET SUCH BAD REVIEWS?! She's the sweetest girl here!! Yes she's kind of quiet, but she's really friendly and knowledgeable about the specials! She used to spill stuff all the time when we first started going, but she never does that anymore, so I kinda think this is just her first job and she was nervous? But she's SO nice. If you're a fan of old fashioned maid cafe girl attitudes, request her. She's my personal favorite to see, and the best at drawing cute little animals on your latte foam!
  • Banana- This girl is by far the most entertaining person here. She's a one girl show. She can do all kinds of cool tricks that I'd sooner expect to see in a circus than a cute cafe. If you want a show, ask for her. But be prepared to be haggled into paying extra or tipping, and she is very persistent about this.
  • Plum- I have no idea why this girl is a waitress, she has NO customer service skills. She's very...to the point about everything. Barely greets you and checks on you a few times, but she has a kind of intimidating presence... If you want a very fast service and hate small talk, she's the girl you want.
  • Apricot- the new girl. I don't have a strong impression of her yet, but she's obviously trying to quickly get the hang of things, and it's cute to see the other girls helping her so much. Big 'girl next door' vibes, she has a kind of foreign French look to her that sets her apart, too!

And the boys, if you get one of them as your waiters (lets be real, we're all kind of hoping to get to have one of the waitresses instead, but sometimes they seem to be short-staffed...):

  • Blond guy- I think he might be the owner's son or something? He doesn't wear a uniform, and only comes out to tell the girls stuff or if the girls are absent. He doesn't have the best customer service attitude, but he knows his stuff about what they're serving. It's super funny when him and Cherry girl are here at the same time because they squabble SO much hahah.
  • Pretty guy- I think this guy is dating Cherry girl, with the way they interacted, and this guy is also absent and seems to be on break at the same time as her! He was nice, and cute (two of my friends had major crushes on him, and if you WANT to get waited on by one of the guys, there's always girls begging him to wait THEIR tables, so be prepared to put up a fight...) but he was kind of reserved, and didn't seem to know or care much about the new seasonal menu items when we asked. So if you're looking for a good-looking guy, he's it. Kinda bland for my tastes, personally.
  • Roller Skate Guy- I have no idea how he doesn't crash into anything or anyone and waits on tables on roller skates, but it's a real spectacle to watch! By far the funniest guy, but also the loudest and can be kind of obnoxious if you're looking to get a table with one of the cute girls and get stuck with him instead.

As for food reccomendations, the menu is constantly rotating depending on the season and what holidays or events are going on, but there are some staples they've always had, like the pomme-mint tea, which is really refreshing, and the famous strawberry shortcake! ALL of the food and drinks are AMAZING though, you really can't go wrong no matter what you choose.

Also, NO, they've never been 'Tokyo Mew Mew' themed or related! I've been coming here forever!!! They're their own thing, they use 'mew mew' because it's just a cute name! You wouldn't assume 'Cutie' magazine and 'Cutie Honey' the anime are related just because they both have 'Cutie', would you?! I feel like someone is just trying to slander Tokyo Mew Mew AND the cafe with these weird rumors...

What a qaint little spot. It sticks out like a sore thumb, being a tacky shade of eye-searing pink. They’ve recently started offering a new imported tea, and that is just darling, too, seeing them try so hard. A lot of teenagers hang out here but I guess that’s to be expected of a place with such a juvenile and unclear-theme. Teenagers are so often misguided, so this place draws them in like moths to a flame. And my my, so many strange rumors online. I suppose the place is serviceable, I only wish the girls were a bit kinder and that they would add rabbit stew to the menu… but we can get that ourselves, I suppose. <3

...I should read usernames first. You and the rest of your group should give it a rest. Is leaving bad reviews really what you've resorted to now? Kind of embarrassing.

One of the places I knew I wanted to stop on my trip to Tokyo the moment I saw pictures online! SO cute! But...no public bathroom? That sucks. Can’t deny the food is amazing though. But dont spend too long there drinking too much tea or you’ll regret it…

We’d offer a public restroom again if people would stop running around our café trying to find proof for their conspiracy theories and winding up in employee-only spaces. There’s a park bathroom right down the path from the café.

I came here on vacation with my big brother recently! I’ve actually met the girls who work here before, they visited my island last summer. They’re all good friends and it was so nice to see them again! They’re wonderful people, and I couldn’t believe how cute the café was in person! The food was so good too! Thank you for the memories! I didn’t spend a long time with you all, but you’ll always be dear friends. Anyone reading this should try out the summer special: apple caramel gelato! ❤️

You’ll always be welcome here and be a part of this team, Ringo. It was our pleasure to have you. All the girls are sending you a package soon, so keep an eye out. Keiichiro might have added some sweets in it, too. But you didn't hear that from me.

Like all the other reviews are saying, the food is godly. It's cute and seems to be made in-house unlike of some of the other places we've visited on our trip so far. I'm convinced the owner has to be some kind of five star pâtissier, but I couldn't find anything but science articles on the guy when I googled him? (maybe a different guy with the same name?) Anyway, feels like a real life Willy Wonka works behind the scenes. ...Docking a star because the girls who work here do run around like clumsy oompa loompas, though. Come for the food, not the maid stuff.

Hey. The oompa loompas are actually very efficient in the chocolate factory.

The food is great, I’ve been going semi-regularly for about two and a half years now and it’s absolutely a place I’d recommend. My favorite thing on the menu right now is the raspberry croissant with a side of cream, paired with the white tea, but they rotate the menu every season and have holiday specials, so there’s always something fun and new to try. Anyway, I hate to give less than 5 stars, but like I said, I go frequently enough that I kinda know the employees' faces, and this summer they randomly have some new guys working here. My waitress told me they were just temp workers, and I’m honestly kind of glad to hear it, because one of the new guys was the most sketchy, desperate dude I've ever seen, and I was getting secondhand embarrassment. Because the girl he was following around while he was being trained? Was clearly dating another guy who worked there, and the boyfriend was glaring at the green-haired guy the ENTIRE TIME I WAS THERE. It was horribly awkward and the vibe that’s usually all cute and friendly was majorly dampened, haha. I’d still recommend it, but maybe give it a few weeks until it calm down, so you can go when there’s less teenage romance drama… >_<

It looks like a super cute café, right? But there’s way more to it than that, regardless of all the crazy theories (they’ve kinda died out lately so idk if anyone remembers those, like wow, throwback) it's like...homey. Cozy. And with so many limited time popup style cafés everywhere, it’s genuinely really nice to have a place where the people working there seem to want a permanent place and are doing some good. The staff can be pretty lively and colorful, which is a lot for some people, but personally I’ll always come back here when the loner lifestyle gets just a touch too lonely, I guess. The warm drinks are perfect early in the morning after a long night of work. Thanks, you guys.

a giant alien monster broke in and one of the waitresses jumped on it like 10 feet in the air and smashed a bottle on its head, killing it instantly. We got a box of complimentary cookies to go for the trouble of the 'scary experience' and on account of 'most of the seats being too wrecked to serve us at'. none of the high school girls there seemed fazed at all by any of this and just kind of sighed and went to grab brooms.

10/10 would visit again

Notes:

Not everything in this fic is accurate to how 2001-2003 would be, namely the lingo, and the fact that Yelp wasn't created until 2004... I took some creative liberties here and there and kinda blitzed this fic in one night (or...more like 5 hours, most of which was spent formatting it, haha.) ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The timeline is probably fudged too, I kind of combined manga and 2002 anime timelines (and kind of didn't include tmmn canon...) so that it goes:
- tmm starts/ cafe opens in 2001
-they go to Ringo's island in the PS game that year too during summer break
-early spring 2002 is when the big series finale happens, the cafe is closed for a short period then re-opens with Berry a few months later and the SRC uses media to make Tokyo Mew Mew look bad
-then 2003 all of that has been resolved and the aliens work at the cafe for a while while on Earth to help the girls clean up the straggler Chimera Animas.

I guess I didn't clarify but Hime Azumi is also canon in this fic but works solo separate from TMM and just stops by every now and then?? I feel like I've def seen fics with a more in depth concept like this with her before, years ago back on ff.net...(edit: found one! Read it here!)

Also I didn't tag the relationships that are implied throughout because they're so minor I didn't think it was necessary. (If I was trying to find a moe/miwa fic or an masago fic and found this tagged as those ships with barely any shipping content I'd personally be a little peeved because it's so offhandedly mentioned and such a minor thing it leans way more gen. So. Tagged as gen, sorry if that bugs anyone! Same goes for the characters because basically all of them show up but aren't spotlighted constantly, besides Ryou and Keiichiro responding to comments.)

Thank you to kiwiana for the Yelp Reviews work skin! Find that here!
And thank you to spectra for suggesting people arguing about if it being called 'mew mew' is related to tokyo mew mew or a coincidence, and if the cafe opened before tokyo mew mew when I brought this idea up. I took that and ran a MILE with it.

and hey, thanks for reading if you made it this far down! thanks for any hits, kudos, bookmarks, and comments! feel free to come yell at me on my writing blog if u want! hope u enjoyed ^_^ <3
