Chapter 1: Where it all ended

Chapter Text

“I don’t get you at all” reki shouted through the rain. Langa was shocked at the sudden out burst he wanted to say something but all words had left his brain all he could do was stare at his friend

“You and Adam are nothing like me. Not a single bit” reki was looking down at the ground langa couldn’t tell if he was crying or if it was the rain. He tried speaking again but no words came out Reki spoke again barely just a whisper now “Do what you want I don’t care. Psycho geniuses have to stick together I guess have fun with that”. As Reki turned away Langa could barely hear what he was saying over the rain and his thundering heart “Reki” Langa finally spoke but it was too late Reki was already out of ear shot.

Langa wanted to run after him but he didn’t know what he would say Reki probably would just continue walking away from him not listening anyway, Langa didn’t blame him after all he did break his promise. Langa’s eyes began to blur, was it tears? Or just the rain? Whatever it was he didn’t stop it.

He stood in the rain thinking about what he could and should have done just to try and comfort reki at least a little bit god why did he have to be so bad at acknowledging other peoples emotions. Why did it have to be Reki sweet, joyful Reki, Reki who always saw the bright side of the world, Reki who helped Langa up after every fall, Reki who’s eyes shone when showing the newest boards he made or the newest volume of his favourite skate magazines. Reki, the boy who made Langa’s heart beat in ways it has never before.

The next day came and went, weeks passed without a single word from Reki and when langa tried to talk to him all he’d get were mumbles or sometimes just silence.

One day langa arrived to class before reki which was surprising as recently Reki always was before him and would just be looking out the window. A few minutes passed and Langa was starting to get worried Reki was never this late, had something happened to him? Did he have a bad accident on his board? Langa’s head was racing.

Then he heard it, he heard him, he heard Reki, laughing? Langa was overjoyed that Reki was happy as it meant he might be in the mood to talk to Langa again. As Reki’s voice came closer Langa started thinking about all the things he would say to Reki.

First he would apologise deeply then he would see how Reki’s been doing though out the time he wasn’t talking. When Reki sounded like he was just outside the door Langa turned around to greet him. “Reki-“ Langa began his heart dropped Reki was holding someone’s hand.

A soft elegant hand cupped Reki’s cut and calloused hand then she turned the corner. Her hair was beautifully brown falling just below her shoulders, her clothes were neatly kept, compared to Reki’s untucked shirt and hoodie underneath, she wore a smile that lit up the room and only gleamed even brighter when she looked at Reki who’s own face was glowing, but to Langa Reki always had this invisible charm that radiated off him even when he wasn’t trying it never failed to put Langa into a trance. Why could he never look at Langa that way.

“Hey Langa” Reki’s voice brought Langa back to earth. Reki was walking over to him smiling and bringing along the girl.

Why did he have to bring her.

“What’s up you look all doom and gloom” Langa had no words, Reki had ignored him for about two months now and he’s now talking like nothing happened.

“I should ask what’s up with you, you have been ignoring me for the past two months” Langa replied.

“Oh ha yeah my bad dude” Reki looked away rubbing the bottom of his nose with his finger, the way he always did when he got a bit flustered or anxious. Langa didn’t even notice he was staring at the movement of his finger but when he did he quickly looked back up to meet Reki’s eyes, those perfect amber eye.

No, stop. Now is not the time Langa found himself saying in his head.

“Yeah umm I just I was feeling a bit down at the start” he rubbed the back of his neck “and then one day when I was working I got a text and I thought it was you at first but it was actually Aiko” he looked down at the girl who was clinging to his hand “then we just started talking and yeah it just spiralled down that rabbit hole, look I’m really sorry dude I didn’t mean to ignore you, I didn’t want to ignore you I just got caught up thinking about her.”

The girl blushed looking away and punching Reki affectionately if Langa’s heart could drop any further it would be in the ground by now.

“Oh … yeah that … that I understand that makes sense” Langa tried his best to smile at Reki to even just pretend his heart hadn’t just been ripped out and thrown around the room.

“I’m happy for you”

“Hey thanks man I just thought I should just catch you up on these crazy past months” he turned to Aiko “I’ll meet you after class” he said hugging her and he turned to his seat while she went to hers.

The next few lessons were hard for Langa not just the work of writing an essay, although he was getting better with his Japanese he still got Katakana and Hiragana mixed up sometimes to his teachers annoyance, but all the time Reki wouldn’t shut up about his stupid girlfriend.

Stupid was a harsh word in fact she was very smart annoyingly smart, she would always get praise for her work which would always follow with Reki giving her a thumbs up and then telling Langa how amazing she was.

Although he shouldn’t complain Reki was finally talking to him again even if it was about her he also knew that he would never get a chance to tell Reki his true feelings even before she came along.

Their time alone also became a group activity Aiko was inseparable from Reki.

Lunch alone with Reki sharing his bento with Langa became a chore to watch as Reki hand fed her his bento all the parts that he always gave Langa.

Even late night at the skate park she had to join she never even touched a board once she would just sit atop the ramps cheering on Reki.

“You could never understand the amount of time he has put into his stunts, you could never understand the beauty of him and his jumps how amazing he can make them flow” Langa would say under his breath.

It was no secret even to himself how hard he’d fallen, and still was. He thought, he thought he would be happy for the day Reki found someone right for him, or at least happiness in some way, shape, or form. But all he felt was jealousy eating away at him that if it went on for any longer it would slowly devour him from the inside out unfortunately that’s the only thing that was possible now.

“Earth to Langa” Langa felt a hot wind brush his neck which made him jump although he didn’t complain “oh sorry dude didn’t mean to scare you, you were just spacing out again. Are you feeling alright?” There was concern in Reki’s voice.

“Yeah ha just feeling a little tired school work has just been full recently” Langa replied wearily.

“Tell me about it why do we have to write so much and it must be really difficult for you as well” Reki replied. Langa sighed internally, before Reki would have offered for him to go over his house for them to work on it together but now it’s a far wish.

Reki probably invites her round so they can work together wrapped tightly in one of Reki’s blankets with her wearing one of his jumpers. While he rests his head on her shoulder looking down at her hands…..

‘Snap’ Langa blinked. Reki had clicked his fingers directly in front of his face “you really aren’t with it today are you” Reki’s voice was quiet almost like it was meant only for him to hear.

He reached out and touched Langa’s forehead with the back of his cold fingers Langa’s heart skipped multiple beats “dude you’re really burning up are you sure you’re ok?”

Langa knew he was perfectly fine illness wise he hardly ever got sick but he couldn’t exactly tell him the real reason his face was hot right now so he just turned his head slightly so that he made Reki’s fingers brush the edge of his hair.

Reki took this as to take his hand away but still stared at Langa they held this position for what seemed like forever, Langa felt his face keep increasing in temperature at this rate he might as well be sick.

“Hey what are you two doing over here” Aiko walked casually towards them and rested her self on Reki’s hunched back with her chin on his shoulder looking down at Langa.

Langa finally moved to get up supporting himself but Reki’s hand still reached out grabbing his arm to help him up.

Langa breathed a thanks and a bye to Reki as well as acknowledging Aiko before turning to leave “remember to drink plenty of water and get some rest” Reki called after him, Langa turned and smiled as he waved. When he got round the corner and out of sight he began sprinting back to his house.
