Work Text:
The day before Thomas and Grace’s wedding.
You sat on and arm chair in the living room of your house, book opened in your hands, there wasn’t much left of it, only a few pages, wanting to finish the book before going to bed. It was beginning to get dark outside and you were beginning to get tired, as you finished another page of the book the phone started ringing, getting up from your spot on the armchair, you placed the book in your hands face down on the small table next to the chair. You headed towards where your phone was, on a table in the hallway between your front door and living room, picking up the receiver in your right hand and the transmitter in your left hand “Hello?” I spoke into the transmitter, putting the receiver up to your right ear. “Y/N are you alright?” Polly’s voice said, she spoke with a slight bit of worry. “Yeah, I’m fine, why?” you asked, you spoke to Polly all the time, the last time being this morning. “Tommy says you haven’t spoke to him in months.” She announced, You roll your eyes slightly. “Well that’s not my fault, whenever I call I get told he’s too busy to talk and he never calls me.” You respond, truthfully. You hadn’t seen or spoken to Tommy for almost 5 months, he’s never around when you visit Small Heath, and is never available when you call him, and he hasn’t made any efforts to visit or call you. Disregarding what you said Polly continued, “you haven’t even responded to his wedding invitation.” She scolded you slightly. “What wedding invitation?” You questioned her, raising an eyebrow in confusion. “Don’t use that ‘I never got it’ act on me,” Polly scolded you further. “Aunt Pol I never had any invitations, no letters, no calls, no visits, nothing, nothing from Tommy in months.” You pleaded your innocence but it was too late, the other line was silent, Polly had ended the call. You put the phone back down in its original place, you felt tears forming in your eyes. Your brother was getting married and you knew nothing about it, of course you knew he was engaged and that he had a son, one of your many nephews, you knew his fiancé, you once considered her one of your closest friends, prior to her betrayal on the family. You wiped the tears away and headed straight upstairs, ignoring the book you were reading just a few minutes ago. Once you were in your bedroom, you opened the doors to the wardrobe in the corner of your room changing into a night gown. You lay down under the covers on your bed, you just stared at the ceiling, before sleep took over your body.
.
The next day
You had woken up early the next morning, you knew you had to go to Tommy’s wedding, whether you had actually gotten an invite or not. You got up from you bed, grabbing a bag from underneath your bed and quickly putting a few pieces of clothing in there, you then grabbed a formal dress out of the wardrobe, placing it on your bed, along with a pair of shoes on the floor , next to your bed. You then ran for your phone downstairs, dialling a phone number from the book next to your phone, putting the receiver against your ear and the transmitter close to your mouth.
‘C’mon, pick up, pick up’
When there was no answer, you dial another number.
“Hello?” Finn’s voice came through the receiver.
“Finn, where is Tommy and Grace’s wedding and what time?”
“If you looked at the invitation you would know.”
“Finn, I never got the invitation, if I had I wouldn’t be asking would I?”
-----------------
And so now you were on your way to your brothers wedding, the ceremony was being held just an hour away from where your living, and the reception was being held at his and Grace’s house.
You had got to the venue about 30 minutes before the ceremony began, from the looks of it most guests had already arrived, your brothers were stood outside, cigarette hanging from Tommy’s mouth, John and Arthur laughing about something and Finn stood there quietly.
“Y/N!” John was the first to notice you, when you started walking towards the four of them.
“Look who decided to show up.” Tommy said after you had reached them, inhaling and exhaling smoke from his cigarette.
“I’m sorry I didn’t respond to your invite but I never got it, I had to ask Finn where the wedding was being held.” You admitted to him.
“We’ll talk about it later.” Tommy said walking into the building, where the ceremony was being held.
“He’s not gonna get over this is he?” You question, your three remaining brothers.
“course he will.” Arthur said, giving me a slight half smile, “I’m gonna go look for Linda, see ya in a bit.” Arthur then walked off.
“Even if he don’t you have us,” John said, smiling, as is that statement made the situation any better.
“John, I love you but that really doesn’t help anything right now.” you said, returning a smile.
“Dad!” John’s eldest daughter Katie shouted, running over, “Mom wants help getting the kids inside and in their seats.”
Since Esme and John had gotten married, his kids from his previous marriage had all grown to love Esme and see her as their mother.
“Alright, come on then.” John held Katie’s hand and Katie led him to where Esme was.
You turn back around to start a conversation with Finn, but he had already disappeared. Rolling your eyes, you walk towards the door of the building, seeing Polly and Ada stood together, talking about whatever, Karl stood next to Ada, holding onto her hand.
“Hey,” you spoke, approaching your sister, aunt and nephew.
“Y/N!” Ada exclaimed, pulling you into a hug, “didn’t think you were gonna come,” Ada said letting you go.
“I only found out about the wedding last night,” you explained, “I told Tommy but he said we’d speak about it later, maybe I shouldn’t have come.”
“Of course you should be here,” Ada pulled you into a comforting hug, and then pulled away from you again.
You turned to look at Polly, “I promise you I never received the invite Pol, it must’ve got lost in the post or something.”
Polly gave you a hug, “I’m sorry for snapping at you, but how did you find out where the wedding was?” Polly questioned, pulling back from the hug.
“I called Finn and he told me, didn’t take much convincing.”
-----------------------
At the reception, you were stood in a hall, talking to Poll.
“Tommy’s over there, go talk to him.” Polly said, pointing over to Tommy, nodding, you headed over to him.
“Tom, can I talk to you?” You asked him, he carried on walking and you followed close behind him.
“Come on then,” Tommy said, leading you to his office, he sat on the chair behind his desk, “sit down,” he pointed to one of the chairs opposite him.
“Look Tommy-” you started, taking a seat.
“Why the fuck have you been ignoring me?!” Tommy shouted.
“Me ignoring you? I’ve tried calling but Grace always tells me your busy, I never got any invitation to the wedding, when I visit Small Heath your not around.” You responded. How the hell was this your fault?
“well, whenever I call you, I don’t get a fucking answer.” Tommy said, opening his cigarette case, taking one out, sliding it across his lips before lighting it.
“I’m always home, I have no reason not to answer, plus it’s not like I can tell who’s calling me.” you responded, standing up rom your chair, this pissed you off even more. Being falsely accused of anything was a piss take.
You left his office, knowing you wouldn’t get through to Tommy.
---------------------
Everyone sat around the long table in Tommy and Grace’s dining room, waiting for the two of them to come back from wherever they were, so we could all start eating. You were sat between Polly and Finn, you and Polly spoke a bit and Finn complained about how he was getting hungry, Isaiah sat on the other side of Finn telling him to shut up.
Finally, Tommy and Grace had come down stairs and into the dining room, we all ate and Arthur made a toast.
------------------------
You were once again stood in the large hall in Arrow house, this time stood talking to Arthur’s wife, Linda and your sister, Ada.
“Y/N, can I speak to you really quickly?” Tommy asked, you nodded and he led you out of the hall and into the hallway, “I wanted to say sorry for accusing you of ignoring me.”
“Thomas Shelby actually apologising?” You question sarcastically.
“Esme was checking on her kids in the spare rooms and in one of them she found your invitation to the wedding hidden under one of the beds,” Tommy spoke, your eyes widening slightly, “So, I spoke to Grace, she hid the invite.”
“What? Why?” You questioned him, walking away before giving him chance to answer, walking back into the hall, seeing grace talking to someone, “Grace! Why the hell did you hide my invitation to this wedding?!” you asked her, anger evident in your voice.
She apologised to whoever she was talking to before turning around to face you, “come on.” she said, signalling for you to follow her, which you did, out into the hallway and into the living room.
“Go on then, what’s your excuse?” you demanded an answer.
“I couldn’t have someone like you here, but somehow you still managed to worm your way in.” Grace said, pouring herself a gin from the table of drinks beside the sofa.
“Someone like me? What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Unemployed, does nothing to contribute to the family, single, childless, I couldn’t have my family finding that out, could I?” Grace listed, sipping on her drink.
“Those are the shittiest reasons ever, ever think I don’t wanna be to involved in the family business, just because I’m not married or have no kids doesn’t mean I’m a shit person.” You respond, rolling your eyes and scrunching your eyebrows together.
-------------------------
You were ready to leave at this point, not caring about the time you would arrive home.
“Tommy, I’m gonna head home now, I’ve written my correct number in the phone book in your office, and I’ll visit you here when I can.” You promised him, giving him a hug.
“Alright, well give me a call when you get home and hopefully someone will answer and let me know.” he hugged me back quickly.
You had already said your goodbyes to the rest of your family, you headed towards the front door, grabbing your coat from one of the hooks next to the front door, throwing it over your body and walking out the door and towards your car.
-----------------
You get to your house a hour and a half later. As soon as you got into your house, you locked the door, flicked your shoes off and headed straight to bed, falling asleep in the clothes you had been wearing all day.
