Work Text:
Abigail had been curious to meet the new farmer that had recently moved in. It’s been a long while since new people came to Pelican Town and apparently this person was going to take over the old farm outside of town. It was going to take alot to fix up that from what she’d heard.
(You know Julius, I feel sorry for that new farmer moving in. Not only didn’t they lose their grandfather but now they’re stuck with ill-managed farmland with no help. Maybe I can strike a deal if they want anything built…)
So yeah Abigail really wanted to see just how things would turn for this new farmer. Maybe a new face could turn things around in this old town and someone to impress with her awesome fighting-skills
Of course the last new thing that came to town had been that Jojomart and that awful Lewis person.
She didn’t want a Lewis 2.0
Who knew that the farmer was such a cool person? Not only had they cleaned up all the debris from their land and fixed up the community house that sent Lewis and Jojomart packing, they also liked to go to the mines and fight monsters!
Abigail had simply visited her friend Sebastian when had more or less bluntly told her just to ask the farmer out
(Look Abigail I get it, you got a big fat crush on the farmer and stuff. You’ve gone on about them for hours so just go and confess to them or whatever. I’m getting tired of you talking about them and need to add new codes to my game so just do it already)
While she did admit having a big crush on the farmer it wasn’t that easy just to ask them out. It had to be at right moment and since her dad hadn’t ordered any bouquets she just had to wait and do it later
Hopefully not too late
It was a cheer accident that Abigail saw the farmer buying a bouquet.
She had just been helping her dad clean the store (she was going to spend the whole day playing games and training but with her mother out of town, she was forced to help) when she saw the farmer buying a flower-bouquet.
Not any kind of bouquet but the kind that one gives to the one they love. Which means the farmer is in love.
As in love with her, of course!
“That’s why they bought the bouquet, they’re going to ask me out!” - Abigail thought for herself, grinning in anticipation. She wasn’t sure if the farmer felt the same way as she did after that night with the spirit board, but this had to be a sign. The farmer was definitely going to ask her out!
Right?
3 days Later Abigail heard that the farmer had given the bouquet to Shane.
She had been in the kitchen trying to find a snack when she heard Marine talking about in the aerobics class. She told in great detail how the farmer had shown up in the saloon and given him the bouquet. (Shane may or may not cried just a little bit)
(Oh Caroline you should’ve seen it, the farmer went down on one knee and basically thrusted the bouquet onto Shanes face. I don’t know whose face was the reddest, theirs or Shane!)
It was as if a big boulder had landed on Abigail's stomach. Of all people the farmer had asked Shane out.
Shane the town ex-drunkie of the town with a thing for chickens was the person the farmer wanted to date?
The farmer had picked him over her?!
Abigail had felt like she was going through a rollercoaster of emotions.
One moment she felt angry at the farmer for choosing an old grump over, the next she wanted to cry for having high hopes of her dating the farmer. Later on she thought how stupid she was for ever thinking that the farmer ever loved her, then the jealousy came when she thought how happy Shane must be despite not deserving it.
(Sure he’s been getting help with his depression and alcoholism, plus he’s a great godfather to Jas so he’s not that bad…)
Then came the shame for ever thinking that. Shane did deserve good things, but why did the farmer love him and not her? What exactly made him more special compared to her?
Abigail tried her best to avoid the farmer.
She stayed hidden behind the store-shelves whenever the farmer came in to shop or went to new hiding places when she wanted to train. She knew it wasn’t fair, the farmer was a close friend to her but she still couldn’t hide her disappointment and broken heart.
(Hey Abigail, you just missed the farmer, they wanted to give you some amethyst they’ve mined from the mines. I know how much you love those stones but maybe your collection is getting a bit too big for your book shelves.)
She just needed time, you know? Time to fully process everything and hopefully move on.
It will happen any day now, right?
Abigail just stared at the stars as she laid on grass in the middle of the night.
Truth be told she had held the hope that they would break things off (maybe then she could have gotten a chance to date the farmer instead) but then she heard how the farmer had proposed with the mermaid necklace, whatever hope she had ran out.
She felt helpless, helplessly in love with a person she can never have and helpless to her feeling as she had ran off to the forest after hearing her dad talking the big “news”
(Can you believe it Caroline? Our sweet farmer is finally tying the knot! It’s sad they didn’t ask for a mermaid necklace from me but hey, at least I can offer them some wedding products-as soon as I get them out of the storage.)
If she had any tears left they would be flowing so all she could do was to lay there emotionless and just let all the emotions sipp out of her body. Through her fingertips, toes, breath and ears she was just going to let everything be absorbed into the ground for a few more hours.
By then everything will be alright again
Maybe
Abigail smiled sweetly as the farmer kissed Shane under the altar, seeing just how happy they were together. She was happy for them despite her feelings.
The pain had settled down a bit, feeling like a scar in her heart. She knew her unrequited love would fade someday and until then she just had to go on. Train harder, practice the drums, help dad in the store and try being the best friend the farmer could ever have.
Who knows maybe she could finally start her own farm and get hands dirty fighting in the mines, maybe even ask the farmer if they want to join her.
Probably won’t be that hard
Definitely.
