Chapter Text
Seoul, Early September 2015
“You haven’t been back home for years Joo-hyun! You couldn’t come for Chuseok last year or Seollal this year, and now you’re saying you can’t make it to Chuseok again?”
Joo-hyun was tired. After a long day in the office, the last thing she wanted to hear was more nagging from her mother. She tried to call eomma every other weekend and even sent her money twice a month. Was that not enough?
“I’d rather have a daughter that visits at least twice a year than a daughter who sends money, but never sees me!”
Well, thought Irene, that answers that question. She was working on a very important case, and if she could wrap it all up nicely right before Seollal, there would be a hefty bonus, and Irene would be able to put more into the savings account she made for her sisters’ education.
“Eomma, you know I would come if I could. But I’m working on an important case right now. I’ll be home for Chuseok this year, I swear” Irene promised.
“That’s what you said last year about Seollal, and now you’re cancelling. Are your clients more important than your family?
You’re breaking your eomma’s heart. Do you want me to die early of a heart attack, huh? And what about your sisters’? You’re letting them down too!” her mother continued.
Irene took a deep breath, counted to three. She’d been feeling guilty for not going home. She’d felt guilty for years, but there were more important things. Sending money home, for one.
And she was focused on the bigger picture.
The bigger picture was this: She would work long and hard for the next few years, treat her mom to an early retirement, pay for her sisters’ education, and get the promotion and raise she deserved. Then, and only then, would she take a break.
“I’m sorry eomma, I have to go to work now”
“But it’s Saturday night, please tell me you’re at least eating health –”
“I’ll call you later,” Irene cut her off “Bye eomma”.
Hanging up the phone, Irene stepped into her home office. There were still a few things she needed to do that she wasn’t able to finish at work today.
