“Get back!” Luz gasped, pulling Hunter away from Willow when she tried to lash at him from behind.
Hunter felt his stomach drop when he was pulled to the side and caught a glimpse of her. Her eyes were bright, bright blue.
“Willow?” Hunter asked, feeling his hands start to tremble.
She only grinned a wicked grin at him. He knew that wasn’t Willow. “How lucky of me to find someone so capable,” she said, tilting her head to the side as she spoke. She drew spell circles at her sides and wielded thorns sharper than the real Willow would ever use. “Certainly not half-a-witch like you.”
Hunter nearly passed out. Clover hurried to his side and settled in his hands while everyone else set about attempting to subdue Willow.
Luz placed a hand on his shoulder and tried to draw his attention while Willow was distracted with Gus and Amity. “You don’t have to fight right now,” she assured him.
“I can’t just let him take her from me,” he said, his palms sweating around Clover before he finally found the courage to hop on her and try to reason with Willow.
Amity had Willow wrapped up tight in an abomination, but she was still writhing and attempting to slice through whatever she could with her vines.
“Willow!” Hunter cried, coming to her side to speak to her. “Willow, please, I know you’re in there!”
She closed her eyes briefly and screamed out before looking back at him with tears on her cheeks. She had already cried so much that day. Hunter felt like he would fall off of Clover. “Take him out with me,” she begged him. “Please. Amity.”
Amity’s hold on her loosened. “No, I can’t!” she shouted back.
“There’s other ways to do this!” Gus tried to reason with her. “You’re our captain, Willow, you can fight back against him!”
“Just do what I say!” Willow snapped, taking in a sob before looking back to Hunter. “Please take good care of Clover for me.”
Amity couldn’t bring herself to do anything other than hold her there.
“Fine,” Willow said, turning her vines back on herself.
“No!” everyone cried at once, quieting when Willow had put herself out of commission, the goo seeping out of her body and mixing with the abominations Amity had around her.
Hunter touched down and immediately accepted Gus when he tried to crash into his arms, but he never once took his eyes off of Willow’s slumped over body. “Don’t touch anything,” he said, pulling Gus away from the goo and holing out an arm to convince Amity to back off. Luz and Camila were already far enough away. “And leave that abomination there. Don’t let him spread out.”
Amity looked over to him. She looked so rattled. “Are you going to be okay?” she asked him softly.
He took in a rattling breath. “I don’t know,” he whispered. He was nauseous, but Clover nuzzled into his cheek regardless. “But we still have work to do.”
