Work Text:

After finding out about Chūya and Dazai being married (Reminder they married 3 years prior to the Agency finding out), the Agency decided to plan a surprise wedding party for the two of them.

Ranpo was the one that told them how to achieve this party without Dazai figuring it out. Atsushi was the one that suggested it. Kunikida was the one that planned it. Yosano was in charge of the drinks(alcohol of course). Kyōka volunteered to make the food. Naomi was in charge of contacting some mafia members to invite to the party(Atsushi’s idea). Kenji was put in charge of the music(He claimed he knew some people he could ask to play live music).

The day of the party, Tanizaki ushered Dazai out the door, saying he has a problem he needs help with. “You should call Mr. Nakahara as well..”

“Why that Slug?” Dazai huffed out. “He’ll be of no use for any problems you have”

“I need his help just as much as yours” Tanizaki tells him. Dazai gives him a suspicious glance, but pulls out his phone to give his husband a call.

“CHIBI~!” Dazai shouts when the line connects. “You remember Tanizaki? Yeah, the one that looks like Tachihara but look broke,” Tanizaki gives Dazai a look for that description. “Anyway, he needs our help with something….no, he needs your help too….I know it’s your day off….I don’t know what it is; He won’t tell me until you come…Chūya, please~…No, don’t hang up..Thank you…I love you too~”

Dazai hangs up with a smile on his face. Tanizaki isn’t sure if he was still hung up on the insult, or if he wanted to laugh at the end of the call. The call he just overheard gave him a pretty good idea about their relationship dynamic.

“He’ll be at the Angency in 10 minutes,” Dazai turns to Tanizaki.

Once Chūya arrived, they made their way to a shop. This shop particularly sold clothing-Fancy clothing. As soon as Chūya stepped foot in the shop, he felt as though he belonged there.

“So you brought me out on my day off because you want a wardrobe change? I have to say, you chose the right person..” Chūya smiles; Walking over to a silk shirt on a rack, “This is too…out there..for you..”

“Umm..what?” Tanizaki looks at all the clothing in this ridiculously expensive shop. Seeing a somewhat simple looking shirt, Tanizaki pulls it off the hook to check the price, and nearly faints. “I don’t think anyone can afford these clothes..”

“Hmm? But this is the shop I go to for almost all my clothes, and it’s not even a fourth of what I’m paid in a week..” Chūya casually flexes his wealth.

“That fact that you spend so much on clothing that isn’t even in style is such a mistake..don’t worry I still love you,” Dazai sighs. Chūya glares at him before looking back at Tanizaki.

“If you’re needing a cheaper shop, I have a few others that would be considered a lot more manageable in price…” Chūya thinks for a moment. “Maybe Bloomingdale’s?”

“Uh..Mr. Nakahara, that’s an expensive store…” Tanizaki replies. Chūya gives him a blank look.

“How cheap is your boss?” Chūya wonders aloud. Realizing what he just said, he clears his throat. “I mean, what do you think your budget is? A million to two million yen for a wardrobe?”

“One million yen?!” Tanizaki couldn’t help but shout. That’s over a month’s pay, and he was certainly not going to spend that much money on just clothing.

“What? Too low?” Chūya wonders aloud. Dazai chuckles to himself after seeing Tanizaki reacting to the price.

“Chibi makes about seven times as much as we do, so he gets a bit careless with money..” Dazai explains to Tanizaki. “Maybe we should start with where you normally would shop, Tanizaki..”

“O-okay..” Tanizaki was happy to leave the shop that he was afraid to be in (He was afraid of somehow breaking something and then having to buy it) . But he was still nervous to bring someone who would spend the amount of his monthly salary on clothes to a store that would be 10x cheaper.

After two hours of Tanizaki’s soul leaving his body every time Chūya bought some absurdly price item from many stores (even the cheap ones) , Tanizaki received a call from Kunikida telling him they’re ready. Informing Chūya and Dazai had become the problem; Mainly due to the fact they went from seeing this as a chore to a fun activity.

Chūya would buy stupidly expensive shit, and Dazai would keep adding to the list of shit that Chūya would buy. They ended up with at least 20 bags full of random items that Chūya bought-and probably would never use. Dazai bought some sunglasses. Tanizaki-the one that they were supposed to shop for-was carrying some of Chūya’s bags.

“I’m sorry, but Mr. Kunikida called saying that he needs our assistance on a case, Dazai..” Tanizaki tries to casually mention. Chūya looks at his bags and then back at Tanizaki.

“You didn’t even get anything!” Chūya pouts a bit. “You need to get something, or  this shopping trip would have been a waste of your time! Is there any clothes that you liked? Don’t worry about the price; I’ll buy it for you”

Tanizaki panics; Believing that he’ll never get them out the door if he doesn’t just chose something. He grabs the first few things he sees. These items were boxers, a pair of socks, and tan khakis. Chūya looked at the items, and frowned.

“No, we’re dressing you up!” Chūya spends the next 2 minutes browsing the clothing isles, and shoving Tanizaki into a changing room. Trying to get the most done in as short amount of time as possible, Tanizaki manages to put on 4 articles of clothing on at once.

He rushes out wearing a black turtleneck, long checkered coat, white ripped jeans, and a scarf. He didn’t even look at himself in the mirror before going out to show off the outfit. Chūya looks him up and down, dissatisfied.

“It’s a good outfit, and it looks good on you, but it’s not the right outfit,” Chūya mumbles to himself. Dazai steps forward and whispers something into his ear. Chūya brightens like a light bulb. “That’s it! It’s not soppy enough!”

Tanizaki chokes on his own saliva at Chūya’s issue with his outfit. Soppy?! Before he can even get upset, he’s shoved into a dressing room by the offender. A slightly different outfit is forced into his hands.

Chūya pays for the outfit, and Tanizaki was actually liking it. They finally leave the store; Heading back to the Agency. Upon arriving, Tanizaki invited Chūya in for some tea.

“Would you like some tea, Mr. Nakahara? The job shouldn’t take too long, and Dazai should be done with work in another half hour if you’d like to wait in the office,” Tanizaki offered. Chūya smiled and accepted.

When Tanizaki opened the door, Chūya was surprised to see a bunch of decorations and people celebrating his wedding. He knew that the Agency was made up of nice people that were good friends to his husband, but he was still surprised that they’d get a wedding party even though they got married years ago. To add on to this surprise, he saw a few of his subordinates within the crowd.

Dazai was a bit surprised as well. He realized something was up when Tanizaki got the phone call from Kunikida. But he didn’t think too much of the request that Chūya help Tanizaki shop-mainly due to how much he loved seeing Chūya fawn over random items (he was too distracted by Chūya to realize something was up).

“Ah..thank you for the party, you really didn’t have to..” Chūya rubs the back of his neck sheepishly. Dazai smiles at the banner hanging from one side of the room to the other reading ‘May your love be eternal’ and leans onto Chūya.

“Chibi looks cutest when he’s embarrassed..” Dazai whispers into Chūya’s ear. His cheeks heat up at the words. “Shall we finally read our vows tonight?”

“Yeah, we should.” Chūya answers, before leaving to rejoin the rest of the party.

Dazai and Chūya both wrote vows after getting married. Neither one read them to the other since they got married. They never had a right time to read them. It felt too out of place to read them on a regular night. Dazai had even thought that they would only be able to read on their 10th anniversary to make it extra special.

After the party-which got Chūya drunk-everyone headed home. With alcohol in his system, and the thoughts of getting to hear Dazai’s vows, Chūya was a little more than just giddy. He giggled and clung to Dazai as he carried him home.

“My vows were stupidly cheesy, and you’ll probably be grossed out..” Chūya begins rambling. “But they’re all fact, and I will hold true to them”

“I’ve held true to my vows since we got married as well..” Dazai unlocks their door.

After getting Chūya to sober up a bit, Dazai pulls out a piece of decently sized paper. Chūya pulls out a relatively smaller piece of paper. Chūya goes first.

“‘While deciding to marry you was not a planned decision, it’s one that I don’t, and will never regret. I love you, and I promise to never stop. I’ll take care of you, and I’ll be there for you when you need it. I promise that to my life partner.’ That’s the end of mine” Chūya finally finishes reading his vows and looks to Dazai expectantly.

“Chūya, you are the most passionate human I’ve ever met. For you to want and love me-the devil himself-is a miracle in and of itself. But this miracle is one that I will never take for granted. As Aristotle said: ‘Love is composed of a single soul inhabiting two bodies,’ And if I’m half of a soul, then I’m sure that other half-the angelic half I didn’t inherit-is you.

“James Baldwin said: ‘Love takes off the masks we feared we cannot live without and know we can not live within.’ My mask will always be down with you, for my trust will always be in you to accept the person I know you understand me to be.

“If we are said to be most alive when we are in love, then it seems that I’ve found my reason for living. I’ll always love and cherish my moments with you. But my favorites are the ones of you in bliss, because that’s when you’re most beautiful..” Dazai puts the paper down, and looks up to find a teary eyed Chūya.

“Why can you always find the right words?” Chūya complains, while digging his face into Dazai’s chest.

Dazai chuckles and wraps his arms around him. “I’ve met the love of my life, what do you expect?”
