Work Text:
You slide down the door, crying for the...how many times did you cry this week? Who cares? Certainly not you at this point. You bring your knees to your chest. You're tired. Tired of all of this. All you want is a little break. Any kind of escape.
A sudden sound of shuffling has you jerking your head up. Your favorite character, Dream, is somehow sitting in front of you. He smiles gently at you. “It's not your fault this is happening. It never was and never will be. Life can be unfair sometimes, yes, but bad things always pass.”
“But they stick around for so long.” You say before you can think. Dream pauses. “That is true. But you can fight through them. Sticking around for a long time doesn't mean sticking around forever. The only thing that matters is that your brighter day is just around the corner.”
“What if the brighter day never comes? What if it's disappointing?” “Don't be silly,” He chuckles softly, “of course it'll come. And if it's disappointing, then make it better. Do things you enjoy. Even if you don't enjoy them right now, you'll appreciate them later.”
You look away, still skeptical of his words. He notices this and smiles gently. “You're doing everything right. You're giving it your all and that's what really matters. Don't let life's temporary bad moments cloud your vision, dear. I notice all of the good that you're doing, even when you don't.” He opens his arms, inviting you for a hug, “And, for what it's worth, I'm proud of you.”
You launch yourself into his arms, sobbing your heart out. It feels warm, comfortable...how lonely have you been? How desperately did you need this hug? That doesn't matter, you have him now. You have this moment.
That's all that matters.
