C H A P T E R 1 : A New Adventure.
REMUS AND ROSE LUPIN
Rose was bored. She couldn't stand being locked up at home all day. The summer days were getting longer and she didn't know what to do. She had to prepare herself mentally to enter middle school, but she didn't want to ; she didn't want to prepare to go to a place that was going to house even more students who were going to go after Remus and her even more. Well, his parents were seriously considering homeschooling Remus.
Fortunately, his day was going to liven up a bit. She heard someone knock on the front door. She put her book aside before getting up and going to open it before her mother asked her to. She saw an old man, dressed in a long gray robe, a long beard that came slightly above his navel, and his hair was the same color as his beard.
"Mom! Dad! There's a weird man at the door!" cried Rose.
Hope and Lyall arrived quickly. Lyall was reassured to see that the strange man his daughter had spoken of was none other than Professor Dumbledore.
"Come in, Professor, please." announced Lyall.
Lyall shifted to the side, Hope and Rose did the same and Professor Dumbledore entered the Lupins' small residence. The three adults went to sit at the kitchen table, Hope remained standing while preparing the tea.
Remus and Rose went into the living room to listen to the discussion the adults were having.
"Rose was, of course, accepted at Hogwarts, but Remus…"
Rose suddenly turned her head to Remus. She wouldn't go to school without her brother. Whether it was going to Muggle school or Magic school, they would go together or no one would go.
Rose got up from the sofa, Remus grabbed her by the arm to stop her from going any further.
"I know what you have in mind, Rose, don't do this. Don't ruin your luck because of me."
"Don’t count on it, Remus. Together or nothing at all."
Remus let go of his twin sister's arm before nodding. He was going to let her try her luck. He had dreamed of going to Hogwarts ever since he had heard all the stories his father had told him and Rose.
Rose walked the short distance between the living room and the kitchen. She planted herself in front of the three adults, she crossed her arms under her chest and she tapped the tip of her right foot against the tiles.
"I refuse to go to your school if Remus does not go either. Either you find a solution so that he can study at Hogwarts, too, otherwise I will not go.é
"Rose, don't be childish!" Lyall chided her. "You will go to Hogwarts with or without Remus."
"No."
Rose was standing her ground, Hope knew it so she put her hand on her husband's thigh and she exerted a slight pressure on it to make him understand that it was lost in advance.
"It's dangerous, for Remus and for the other students." tried to explain Dumbledore to Rose.
Rose looked at the Professor blankly. She wondered if he took her for an idiot.
"Dangerous? My brother was bitten six years ago and has he ever had any problems? No. Has he ever attacked someone with or without a reason? No. The only one being in danger is Remus because people are stupid and uneducated!"
Professor Dumbledore looked at Rose with a small smile. Lyall was ready to explode, he couldn't believe his daughter had dared to speak that way to one of the greatest wizards in the Wizarding world. Hope gave the Professor an apologetic smile when he looked in her direction.
Remus had heard the conversation and he couldn't help but smile. He appreciated more than he could express everything Rose did for him; she always watched his back, she defended him body and soul whenever necessary, she had never abandoned him, she protected him and she didn't care about the consequences.
However, Remus had to admit that Professor Dumbledore was right, it was dangerous for others. He was dangerous to others. Maybe it wasn't a good idea for him to go to Hogwarts after all…
"Can I go talk to him?" Dumbledore asked Lyall and Hope.
Both parents nodded and the Professor took his cup of tea before going into the living room. Lyall glared at his daughter before ordering Rose into her room. Rose sighed before obeying. Technically, she had not completely obeyed her father. She had just hidden away from Lyall's line of sight. She had hidden herself in a place where she would not be seen but where she could hear the discussion between Remus and Dumbledore.
Professor Dumbledore took a seat on the armchair which was a few inches from the couch where Remus was quietly seated.
"I am Professor Dumbledore, the headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry." he introduced himself.
"I know." Remus answered shyly.
"Would you like to come and study at Hogwarts with your sister?"
"Me? Can I really go?" Remus asked, his voice full of hope.
"Why wouldn't you be allowed to?"
After all, to Rose, he had told it was dangerous, not impossible. He was convinced that with the right guidance and a safe place for the Full Moon, Remus could attend Hogwarts without any problems. He had proven it by adapting perfectly to the Muggle school.
"Because…because…"
Remus looked behind him to make sure Rose wasn't behind him before speaking again.
"Maybe that's not a good idea, sir. I…I'm…"
Remus pulled his knees up to his chin, wrapping his arms around his legs before looking away from the impressive Professor.
"I'm different…a monster."
"A monster ?" asked the Professor, arching his right eyebrow. "What monster? I don't see any."
"Me, sir. I'm the monster. I'm a Werewolf."
"Oh, I see. But you know, right now, all I see is Remus Lupin, a young boy full of potential who is just waiting to prove his worth. So , Remus, would you like to come and study at Hogwarts?"
"Yes !"
Remus had regained hope and was eager to break the news to his sister. But he didn't need to, Rose appeared out of nowhere, hands on hips, staring at Dumbledore.
"On Full Moon nights, I want to be with him. Since his very first transformation, I have been with him, I want to be able to continue to be."
Dumbledore took a sip of his tea before nodding.
“I will make all the necessary arrangements to make it possible, young lady.”
Rose smiled, proud of herself. Then she and Remus exchanged a knowing look. They had succeeded. They would not be separated.
Dumbledore returned to the kitchen with Remus and Rose's parents as the two children went up to Remus' room.
Dumbledore had done things the right way, the day after his visit an owl had come to deliver the two letters of admission to Hogwarts with the list of materials they would need for their first year at the School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in Hogwarts. The four Lupins went in the afternoon to Diagon Alley to buy school supplies. They didn't have much time left before school started, so they couldn't afford to waste time.
They had started by buying the clothes, that was the part Rose hated the most in the world, being forced to stay locked in a fitting room while her mother threw the clothes into the fitting room so she could try them on and see which one suits him best. Rose knew her clothing size, so she really didn't see why she had to try on skirts and shirts one size down and one size up. But, it made Hope happy so Rose took her troubles patiently and she lent herself to the game. Remus had had better luck, he had gone to buy his uniform with Lyall, he had just needed to search to find his size, he had tried to make sure it fit and Lyall had paid.
Once the uniform had been bought in full (the gloves, the wizarding robe, the winter cape and the pointed hat), they then went to buy the textbooks, in duplicate, of course. That part went by relatively quickly, there was just one book he had trouble finding, they had to go around the shop three times before finding it, at the entrance.
They then bought two telescopes, two cauldrons, two brass scales and two sets of crystal phioles. They went to Ollivander to buy their wand.
Rose widened her eyes wide when she entered Ollivander's, all these shelves with all these chopsticks made her dream. She also wondered which of all these possible choices was going to be hers.
Rose had tried five different wands before finding the right one. She didn't quite know how to describe it, but when she held the last wand in her hand, it felt so natural, as if the wand and Rose were finally reunited after years of separation. It was made of cherry wood, inside was White River monster thorn, it was 25 centimeters tall and it was neither too soft nor too stiff.
Remus had found his after the sixth attempt. His wand was made of cypress, with unicorn hair inside, measured 25.75 centimeters and was very flexible.
Both Rose and Remus had chosen to have an owl rather than a rat or a cat.
Once they got home, Rose locked herself in her room and looked at her school stuff. She was ready for this new adventure that she was going to live with her brother by her side.
SIRIUS BLACK
Sirius was posted outside his bedroom window and he was eagerly awaiting the arrival of the owl who would deliver him from the Hell he was living in. He had almost given up hope, but the owl finally arrived; he hastened to open the window to retrieve the envelope, he was afraid that his mother would appear out of nowhere to take it and tear it up, thus deciding to refuse to send him to Hogwarts to continue tormenting him. He fed the owl, which immediately left. Sirius opened the envelope and read the letter. He had read it several times to make sure what it read was the truth, he was admitted to Hogwarts, but he wanted to make sure it was real and no longer some prank his brain was playing. But after reading it five times, the content of the letter remained the same. In September he would go to Hogwarts.
He quickly left his room, ran down the stairs, shouting:
“It arrived ! I'm going to Hogwarts!”
Orion looked at his son unimpressed, it made sense, after all, he was a Black, he would definitely go to Hogwarts, he would become the shame of the magical community if one of his sons was not admitted to this school. Walburga just asked him to keep the noise down, not caring what his first son had just said. And Regulus looked at him sadly. He was going to lose his big brother. He was a bit dramatic, he wasn't leaving forever, he'd be back for the holidays, but Regulus didn't like the idea of Sirius making friends and forgetting about him.
"Do you have to go?" Regulus asked when Sirius sat down next to him on the stairs.
"Yes !" Sirius replied with far too much gusto for Regulus' liking.
"Oh…"
"But don't worry. I'll write to you every day and come back during the holidays, I promise!"
Regulus smiled. He really hoped that his big brother would keep his promise.
At night, Sirius had been unable to sleep, he was in such a rush to be there. On the other hand, the next day, Walburga would take him to buy his school stuff. Things would become official. Once the school stuff was bought, Walburga couldn't stop him from leaving.
Sirius had bitten his tongue until he and his mother left 12 Grimmauld Place.
Walburga was not the most patient woman in the world. Quite the contrary. Spending so much time in the shops with her son had exasperated her beyond measure. People jostling - and jostling her too - had put her in a bad mood, but Sirius knew best that the slightest thing could put his mother in a bad mood. So he made himself as small as possible. He had done as quickly as possible in the stores to make sure that they did not spend more time there than necessary. Uniform, accessories, textbooks, wand and owl, all had been purchased in less than two hours.
Sirius stroked his owl - which was locked in its cage - he smiled sweetly at him.
“Don't worry, we'll be leaving very soon.”
Sirius turned his head to his calendar where he had circled 31st of August in red.
“Three more days to go and we'll be out of here. We just have to be a little patient.”
Sirius reassured the bird because it reassured him to know that in three days, he would leave this cursed place.
Sirius went to bed at night knowing that his life would change dramatically in three days.
