Chapter Text
The world wasn't fair.
Remembering what his life used to be before he was diagnosed as quirkless and Kacchan got his, he realized how the world was simply judging him about something he had no control over, maybe someday it would be different, maybe someday they would appreciate him, maybe someday...
No, there was always someone who reminded him day after day how pathetic and worthless he was, none other than Bakugo Katsuki himself; his childhood friend.
Izuku couldn't take it anymore, but he had to do it for his mom, who always waited for him at home with a warm smile, and today that wasn't going to change, right?
At least that's what he thought before entering home...
That morning, when Izuku woke up, he had the feeling that something really bad was going to happen but couldn't guess what it could be, as usual, he'd receive a drubbing from Kacchan and his 'friends' and also all the mockery about him. Izuku left his room when his mom called him for breakfast, she seemed more nervous than usual. Why? It was beyond him, but there was something going on.
Before Izuku left home, she said goodbye in a more loving way than usual, as if she wouldn't see him again for a long time. Why? Everything will be as always when I come back from school.
Once he gets to his classroom, he doesn't look up as he heads to his desk at the end of class, ignoring all the looks of contempt from his classmates who had arrived before him. Izuku sits in complete silence and waits for the teacher to arrive and teach the class.
When the bell rang, indicating that the school day was over, Izuku decided to stay a little longer to finish what he was writing down in his hero analysis notebook for the future, but suddenly someone snatched it from him, he glanced up and saw that it was none other than Kacchan along with those who always followed him.
"Oi" Kacchan called him.
"Y-yes, Kacchan?" Izuku's voice trembled as he said that, afraid of saying something else.
"Deku, what the hell is this? Huh?!" Says after reading the title of the notebook. And, creating a small explosion from the palm of his hand, he threw it out of the window. "Are you still thinking you can become a hero without a quirk? Well, if you want to be a hero that bad, I've got an idea for you, pray that in another life you'll have a quirk... and take a swan dive off the roof!"
Having said that, he left the class. Izuku stays in his place, thinking about what Kacchan told him, and what if I jump off the roof? Maybe I wouldn't be this worthless shitty Deku... No, he wouldn't do that, mom'd be devastated if I committed suicide.
Izuku decided that killing himself didn't make sense, so he left school to go home, grabbing his notebook from a pond where the fish were starting to eat it.
But, even if he knew he wouldn't commit suicide, he couldn't avoid thinking about where to finish his life. Maybe get drowned in a river? No, too much time... Cutting my veins? No, that would hurt...Take a swan dive off the rooftop as Kacchan said? Yes, that would be faster than any other option, and I'd die instantly from the impact on the ground. Fine, he had the option but, where could he do it? Stop, I won't commit suicide. Choosing to think about another thing that wouldn't be what Kacchan told him, he started to think about what kind of food mom cooked today. I'd definitely like katsudon...
Walking through a street that wasn't very busy on the way home, he heard a noise behind him but he was so deep in his thoughts that he didn't pay attention to it. What a mistake. In a blink of an eye Izuku was being wrapped by a viscous liquid.
"Great, you have the perfect body to own, how lucky I am" The villain says with his voice muffled by his own quirk while he wraps Izuku's arm.
"What do you-" Izuku couldn't finish because the villain was astute and took advantage of the opened mouth of Izuku, getting into his system and asphyxiating him.
Izuku felt the cold liquid inside of his lungs, causing him the urge to throw up, but nothing could come out or in from his throat. He was terrified, he couldn't move, he felt how his muscles didn't respond to the instinct of running away from a dangerous situation, he was lost.
Izuku fought the sludge in vain and tried to pull it away with his hands, but they slipped through it with nothing solid to grab. Izuku tries to spit the villain out of his lungs desperately, but it doesn't work either. In agony of lack of air, his vision began to get darker and fuzzy at the corners.
He couldn't even ask for help because no one was there to, maybe this was the end, Kacchan was right, he was just an useless Deku, so pathetic that no one would know that he was being killed by a villain. With tears in his eyes Izuku gave up, for the first time in his life he was giving up, letting death take him with it.
He had already closed his eyes knowing that it was useless to fight against him, but moments before falling into unconsciousness he heard someone who had a voice too similar to All Might's saying powerfully:
"I AM HERE!!"
And Izuku fell unconscious.
Izuku came back to consciousness with a throat pain as if a knife had ripped him from there and all the way to his lungs.
When he opened his eyes he couldn't believe who was in front of him, All Might saved him, his idol! Izuku thought that he could die of happiness at that moment.
"All Might!" He shouted.
"Oh, you're awake. Tell me, my boy, what's your name?" Said All Might.
"Um, M-Midoriya I-Izuku" He responds, mentally slapping himself in the face for stuttering in front of All Might, "A-All Might? Um, why did you ask for my name?"
"For the paperwork, now, if you're alright," All Might turns and crouches down, ready to jump and leave the place.
But Izuku had an important question so he ran in the direction where All Might was before he left and Izuku realized too late that All Might had jumped and he had grabbed onto All Might's leg.
Izuku can't help the scream he lets out as he watches the city while he's in the air.
"Get off me, boy!" All Might says while he shakes his leg to try and get rid of Izuku.
"If I get off from you now, I'll fall and die!" He yells.
The pro-hero must have realized that Izuku was right, because he stops on a rooftop and leaves him there.
Izuku tries to calm his breathing, sucking in air through his nose while keeping his mouth pressed tightly shut, refusing to show how weak he is in front of his idol.
"That was reckless from you, boy" Scolded All Might, already on the edge, preparing to leave again.
"All Might! I have a question!" Izuku needed to hear the answer directly from his idol, something that wasn't what everyone told him.
"Fine, I'll answer your question. But I don't have much time so be quick" All Might says before coughing a bit of blood but covering it up fast with his fist.
Izuku saw it but decided not to comment on it, instead he made his question,
"Sure! Uh.. Can I- Can I be a hero? I mean, without a quirk? Everyone at school dislikes me, and they always remind me I can't, but I had to ask you because even though I know I can't be the No.1 hero, at least I'll be able to help people, right?" Izuku wished All Might didn't have that pitying look in his eyes, All Might's gaze hesitated on keeping looking at Izuku so he turned around.
Izuku stayed in his place waiting for the usual answer that a hero would give to his fans, 'Of course!, everyone can make it, just follow your dreams!'. However, Izuku's luck was never on his side.
"Sorry, child, but you can't be a hero without a quirk, you need to be more realistic and choose another job that's not too risky for someone like you."
And then, All Might was gone, leaving Izuku on the rooftop.
Izuku couldn't believe what he had just heard from his idol, the same thing that everyone had told him his entire life. Destroying Izuku's only dream.
He collapses on his knees and doesn't realize that the tears that were accumulating on his eyes began to fall down his cheeks, and when he does, he is crying and sobbing uncontrollably. He was devastated.
After crying until there were no more tears left, his eyes drifted over to the edge of the roof.
No, he wasn't going to jump, his mom worries about him so the only reason why he doesn't jump right now is because of his mom. She's the only one who cares about Izuku, she has no one else but him.
His mother is the only thing that keeps him together at this moment.
Wiping his face with his hands and getting up, he goes down the stairs, restarting his way home.
He takes a single step on the pavement and he hears an explosion, and another... no, he recognizes very well the sounds to know who they're from. Those are from Kacchan. Why?
The explosions aren't too far from where he is, rapidly finds the origin from them, he breaks through the crowd and then he's in front of the police barricade watching his former best friend struggling against the same sludge villain that had attacked him earlier.
Didn't All Might defeat the villain? Because he saw some bottles containing the villain, right before he had just-
Oh.
It's his fault.
Izuku must have made the bottles drop from All Might and now he made kacchan in danger, even worse, the pro heroes are standing in their places without doing anything. Why is no one helping?
What All Might and everyone else told him may be true, but that didn't stop Izuku from not letting someone be killed.
Izuku finds himself running directly to Kacchan and the villain, ignoring all the warnings from the police and the heroes behind him; quickly starts to think of a weakness to attack the villain, come on, it has to have one!... The eyes!
Izuku throws his backpack as hard as he can directly to one of the villain's eyes, which makes the sludge move backwards letting Kacchan take a short breath before it comes back. Trying to make time till a pro-hero appears, Izuku starts to claw at everything he can reach, as when he was attacked it didn't work.
The villain was ready to attack Izuku, but All Might appeared and could save Kacchan.
After that, the pro heroes proceeded to scold Izuku, who waited for them to stop talking about why he shouldn't have risked his life when the situation was managed by the professionals. Of course, because standing right there without doing anything to help was the correct thing. And praising how brave and strong Kacchan was.
Izuku just wants to go home and take a nap, it's been a long and hard day.
Seemingly, the heroes perceived that Izuku wasn't listening and let him go. Izuku restarted his way home again thinking about how the world treats him.
(He doesn't notice the two guys coming from the same way he's heading.)
The world wasn't fair.
Remembering what his life used to be before he was diagnosed as quirkless and Kacchan got his, he realized how the world was simply judging him about something he had no control over, maybe someday it would be different, maybe someday they would appreciate him, maybe someday...
No, there was always someone who reminded him day after day how pathetic and useless he was, none other than Bakugo Katsuki himself; his childhood friend.
Izuku couldn't take it anymore, but had to do it for his mom who always waited for him at home with a warm smile, and today wasn't going to change, right?
At least that's what he thought before entering home...
The first worrying thing was that mom wasn't waiting for him in the kitchen, the second thing was the stained footprints of about two persons in the entrance hall. Too worried about why mom wasn't waiting for him, he forgot to close the entrance door.
Footprints, did someone break into the house to steal?
When he enters the living room, searching for his mother, the view in front of Izuku leaves him breathless.
There, on the floor was his mother, covered in a pool of her own blood from a shot on her head and two on the stomach, her face (or what could be seen without blood) had an expression of horror, her green eyes wide open which had already lost their shine, and her mouth half-closed. Flaccid arms on both sides of her body.
On the closest wall to her body there was a note written with blood.
'This is what happens when you don't keep to the deal'
Izuku felt his extremities as if they were made of concrete, frozen up in his place. He felt numb, disconnected from himself, looking at his mother's body in front of him but not really looking at it.
When his mind finally comes back down to earth, reality hits him like a ton of bricks. Izuku speeds towards his mother's body, with tears in his eyes.
"Mom!!!!!" He calls her, knowing that she won't answer.
He crouched next to his mother's body, holding her face in his trembling hands. She's dead, the only person that cares about Izuku is now gone.
Too shocked to assimilate that she had already left this world, the only thought that crossed his mind at that moment was to call an ambulance. That's what he did. With shaking hands, he looked for his mobile phone which was in the pocket of his school backpack. Staining the screen with blood from having held his mother's face in his hands, he managed to call the 199.
Quickly, someone picked up the call.
"911, what's your emergency?" The voice on the other side of the phone talked.
"H-Hello? Um.. My-My mom" Izuku stuttered.
"All right, tell me what happened to your mom, okay?"
"F-Fine, she-she is on the floor, I-I don't think she's still alive" Some tears started to flow when he pronounced those words, hoping he was wrong. His breathing began to accelerate.
"Alright dearie, stay calm for me okay? Tell me your name and your address, please."
"I-Izuku Midoriya, Musutafu, street ####, apartment no. 5" At this point he was starting to hyperventilate.
"That's all what I needed, we're sending an ambulance and the police to your house," All you could hear was the frenetic breathing coming from Izuku. "Hey, can you still hear me?"
"... Yes?" Responded with the voice so low that it was almost impossible to hear.
"Okay dearie, my name is Sara, can you please tell me 5 things you can see until the paramedics arrive?."
"Um.. The... The backpack..."
The paramedics and police were entering the apartment a few moments after.
Izuku couldn't feel the world around him, he didn't even know if he was breathing, whatever the woman on the phone was trying to get him to do wasn't working. The voice through the phone was so muffled that it was intelligible for him, that was before someone touched his shoulder.
Trying to focus on where his mother was, he realized that they had taken his mother somewhere he didn't know.
"Mom..." Izuku babbled.
"Hey, boy, follow my breathing." The paramedic said.
The world felt too far for Izuku as if he was watching a movie. Little by little he tried to concentrate on following the paramedic's breathing, progressively succeeding.
Ten minutes after calming down his breathing, the paramedic told him to grab his belongings. After that, he took Izuku out of his house and carried him in a car somewhere far away from there. Specifically, the reception of a social assistance center.
Most likely they'll send him to an orphanage.
Now, Izuku had nothing. He lost everything.
