The salty wind was invigorating, the sun glinted on the cresting waves, and the sand was powdery-soft. It was the perfect day for the beach, and Kakashi was regretting that he had agreed to this outing. He was bound to get a sunburn, or chaffing, or possibly even bitten by a shark. He preferred to enjoy the beach from the balcony of one of those luxurious hotels that lined the beach to the north, preferably with a glass of wine in hand.
“KAKASHI!” Gai’s voice boomed over the whipping sound of the wind, and Kakashi peeked out from under his beach umbrella to say “no” to whatever it was that Gai was about to invite him to do. “We’re going to play FRISBEE!”
The “no” was right on the tip of Kakashi’s tongue until he saw Tenzou standing there, looking hopeful. He was bare-chested and sporting a hilarious farmer’s tan. They had been friends once, but drifted apart after Kakashi had moved on to a new job. Tenzou had been a gangly kid back then, and Kakashi a sort of mentor-figure. But now…his shoulders and chest–several shades paler than his strong forearms, were broad and well-defined. Well. Tenzou had grown up.
“I’m not diving into the water to get the frisbee if you make a bad throw,” Kakashi warned, but Gai seemed to only hear an enthusiastic agreement in Kakashi’s words. He jumped into the air and whooped like an overexcited kid, then sprinted away down the beach, much too far for a casual game of frisbee.
Kakashi stood and stretched slowly, working out the kinks from his stiff muscles. Tenzou was still watching him, so he braved the inevitable sunburn and pulled his long-sleeve shirt over his head and tossed it back into the shade. He wouldn’t mind getting to know the younger man again, especially if …yep, the kid still had that crush on him. Tenzou’s eyes raked up and down Kakashi’s body before his face flushed a deep pink.
“Gai actually said he was going to teach me how to play frisbee, since I never have before,” Tenzou said. He looked worriedly up the beach where Gai was flinging the frisbee up into the sky and then catching it as it spun back down towards him.
“It seems I’m still your senpai then,” Kakashi noted, a bit of teasing in his voice. “Let me help you.” Tenzou followed him out onto the sand, standing a bit away as Kakashi waved to Gai that they were ready.
The frisbee arced through the air like a graceful bird, spinning flat and true directly towards Kakashi. Kakashi caught it easily, then paused and looked at Tenzou.
“It takes some practice, but it’s mostly in the wrist.” He demonstrated, holding the frisbee against himself and then throwing it side-armed, snapping his wrist at the last moment to ensure that it would stay level and fly true. Gai caught it with a joyful whoop and then flung it back, a bit more wildly than before, but not uncatchable. Kakashi had to jump to catch it, but he managed.
“You try.” Kakashi handed Tenzou the frisbee, but the other man only stood awkwardly and shuffled his feet, frowning.
“Here.” Kakashi stepped in close and positioned Tenzou’s hand and arm properly. He could smell the sunscreen and cologne on him, and feel the warmth of his skin under his fingertips. When Tenzou’s breath caught and he looked at Kakashi with those big dark eyes, only inches from Kakashi’s face, he was especially glad that he’d agreed to play frisbee with Gai.
He was going to have a very good time getting to know Tenzou again–this sunburn was going to be well worth it.
