Work Text:

"You ready to head out?"

Cannonball looked up from his math homework, watching as his dad put his tools up and wiped the oil from his hands. Working on motorcycles could get really messy.

"Yeah." He said, scooping the papers together and shoving them into his bag.

"Cool." Cannonball's dad said. They were a duo of few words, always had been. If it didn't have something to do with engines, bikes, or motorcycles, Cannonball's dad never had much to say, and for a long while, Cannonball hadn't either. Cannonball's mom had always filled any silences with ease, so there was no need for small talk. That had changed a bit when he started hanging out with the other 10 Speeds at the Creek, and he thoroughly enjoyed his friends company, but it was still nice to let himself just be with his dad.

They slung their respective bags on, and started the walk to Duck Mart. It was Friday after all, and the walk from the shop wasn't too terribly long. The weather was nice after all; it wasn't yet fall, however the heat had died down enough that it was pleasant to be outside again. They let themselves take in the neighborhood, letting the sun slowly creep across the sky as it got later and later. When they eventually arrived at the Duck Mart, Cannonball couldn't help but shiver in the sudden air conditioning.

As his dad ordered the soft pretzels, Cannonball stared at the ice pops sitting behind the counter, remembering the adventure he had embarked upon not too long ago. Somehow a simple trip to get a sweet treat had left him with two new friends he looked forward to seeing whenever possible. The 10 Speeds were incredible and some of the best friends Cannonball had ever had, but they had all connected initially over their love of bikes and BMX. For a few months that had been the only thing they had talked about. With Craig and Sparkle Cadet, they just clicked.

Cannonball was handed a soft pretzel, and followed his dad out of the store, biting into the crisp-yet-soft, salty treat. It tasted just as good as it did each week, and left Cannonball feeling content.

"Things been going alright at the creek?" His dad asked.

"Yeah," Cannonball said, taking another bite of pretzel. They faded back into their comfortable silence, watching the sun begin to set on their way home.

Notes:

I love the 10 Speeds so so so so much but for some reason I haven't written about any of them other than Handlebarb for... literally no reason.
Warpspeed and Todd fics coming soon, mark my words.
