Work Text:
The man formerly known as Seven was finally done with all the paperwork, and could finish up for the night and head home. It was tiring, and all he wanted by the end of the night was to go back home, and thankfully, he’d get to do exactly that now.
Getting all this damn paperwork done reminded him of the old days. How much work it always took to document everything afterwards, even on the best days of the work. The day he felt the most accomplished in his work as a detective in the force, that day he saved those dozens of children years ago, and he still had to do file a damn mountain of paperwork, and most of it went to waste, considering his superiors told him he couldn’t keep pursuing those leads, so those kids were free, but their captives roamed free, no punishment at all having come their way.
Truth be told, Seven was glad that they eventually got their just deserts, even if some got it rougher than others. Truly, he shouldn’t be glad that most of them had violent deaths, but… maybe that was karma. The world giving back to them what they had repeatedly put out in the world, via all the torture and pain they put out in the world, especially on those kids. No kids deserve the amount of trauma they had to endure. Not a single one. That’s what angered Seven all those years later, though he felt better now, knowing justice had taken place, and the head of the project was finally behind bars, where he deserved to be.
Though, as always, the work is never over. There’s always something else. Now, some other group, one related to Ace, Gentarou Hongou, and his Nonary Project. The group that essentially helped him put the project into action, some sort of cult that he could now connect a name to, Free the Souls , was out there, still doing shady shit, and he would do whatever he could to stop them. He wouldn’t stand by, and with the help of a few good friends he made last year, he knew they could all get them. Tear down their organization, and end things once and for all.
And, despite what some people seemed to think, of the ones who knew of her and what she’d done, he was one of the few who doubted Akane had anything to do with this, much less her brother. The two didn’t fit the MO of these crazy fanatics, no matter what Alice thought.
He’d keep believing in them, no matter what.
The detective closed up shop for the night, leaving work to finally head back home.
That’s when he wondered a bit more about the present. This last year, it was quite the mess, but he made some good memories, surprisingly.
And a few bad ones too, but that’s how life was.
He got to truly meet and befriend those kids he helped rescue all those years ago, like Clover and Snake, which he still couldn’t believe that little brat was using her real name as a codename all along. At least Snake was a codename. He grew to form a genuine connection with both Clover and her brother, Light, and he even helped them get their new job, and really wished for them to perform well.
Then there was Junpei. That kid was someone who had changed a lot in the past year, but he was still happy to collaborate with him, even if they didn’t do so as often as he’d like. After all, he was part of a private detective agency, while Seven was a detective that worked in an actual police department… and the fact that Junpei operated in the US while Seven still mostly worked in Japan. He was a Japanese cop after all, so that was his home as well as his base of operations, though he’s since then traveled to the US semi-frequently, with the help of some… connections.
Then, there were the perps. Ace, Gentarou Hongou, who he had already pondered over earlier and would rather not think about much else, but then there were Santa and June, Aoi and Akane Kurashiki, the two siblings he had also met ten years ago. He wasn’t exactly happy to have been made a prisoner for the sake of their game, but after everything, he knew why it happened, and didn’t exactly blame them. Maybe it could’ve used with less killing, but those murders were all able to be blamed primarily on Hongou, which he was glad to hear.
He just hoped that whatever those two were up to now, that it wasn’t something that would involve him getting kidnapped again.
After a long drive, he arrived back home to the apartment, and opened the door.
“Hey, Kentarou.” A voice called out to him from inside the apartment.
He smirked. It was nice having someone to come back home to.
