She Had Me At Heads Carolina

Summary:

A country song brings two people together.

Work Text:

SHE HAD ME AT HEADS CAROLINA

DISCLAIMER

Based off of the music video by Cole Swindell. Song belongs to Cole Swindell, Jo Dee Messina, and their record labels. Marvel characters belong to Stan Lee. I only own the plot and characters you don’t recognize. I also blame Pumpkindoodles for getting me into this pairing.

Brock Rumlow, Jack Rollins, Mark Winters, Christopher Porter, Roger Lanier, and Terrence Kelvin walked into the bar and headed for a table. To their surprise, one of the patrons was up on stage, singing.

“Oh, shit. It’s karaoke night,” Jack muttered. He was 6’2 with light green eyes and black hair, wearing a white shirt, blue jeans, white socks, and brown tennis shoes.

“And what’s wrong with karaoke?” Mark wondered. At 5’9 with short, black hair and brown eyes, he was the only member of the team that was African-American and was the second shortest member of the unit. He was wearing a dark green shirt with blue jeans, plain white socks, and black loafers.

“Absolutely nothin’. It’s just not really his thing,” Brock responded, running his fingers through his black hair. He stood at 5’10 with black hair and brown eyes, wearing a gray shirt, black jeans, and black boots that hid the gray socks he wore.

“He doesn’t have to sing. He can just watch everyone else make a fool of themselves,” Terrence Kelvin snarked and everyone else rolled their eyes at him. Terrence was 5’7 and Caucasian with blonde hair and blue eyes and was wearing a black Blue Oyster Cult shirt with a pair of blue jeans ripped at the knees and gray socks covered by black sneakers.

“That’s what I usually do,” Christopher Porter agreed. Like Brock, Terrence, and Jack, he was Caucasian with light brown hair, hazel eyes, and stood at 6’0, his broad shoulders covered by a gray shirt, followed by brown slacks, white socks, and a black pair of loafers.

“I dunno. I think it might be fun,” Roger Lanier stated. At 6’1, the man was the tallest of the group with black hair and brown eyes, wearing a blue shirt, blue jeans, white socks, and white sneakers.

“Then you go ahead and sign up. I ain’t,” Jack told him as they sat down at a table. At this, Brock shook his head with a smile. This is what we needed right now, he thought to himself. S.T.R.I.K.E. had just gotten back from a raid on a Red Room location, and something like that always took a lot out of his guys. Hell, it took a lot out of him, especially since he often worked with Natasha.

He shook this thought off and looked around, his eyes narrowing into concentrated slits as he took in the entrances and exits. He wasn’t expecting it, but it’d be nice to know where they could go if they needed to make a quick getaway. Seeing the look, Jack elbowed him.

“Hey, we’re fine,” he said softly. Brock gave him a soft smile.

“I’m good,” he assured him and then settled back in his seat, looking around the bar as he gave his drink order to a server, smiling when he saw Coulson’s team with a couple of scientists, drinking shots. To his surprise, Brock found himself drawn to a woman who was about 5’4 with black hair that was done up in waves wearing a black dress with matching cowgirl boots. “Hey, who’s that?” he queried, gesturing to her and the rest of the team followed his gaze.

“Dr. Lewis. She works with Dr. Foster,” Jack replied.

“I heard she tased Thor,” Terrence stated.

“It’s true,” Mark confirmed as Brock was given his drink. “I heard Dr. Simmons gushing about it when I visited sci-ops before she and Fitz transferred to Coulson’s team,” he continued and Brock nodded at this. Damn, that’s kinda badass, he thought to himself as he watched them talking. His lips curved into a grin as he saw one of them gesture towards the stage, obviously trying to talk her into singing. At first she shook her head but then eventually nodded. He watched as the first girl walked up to the guy in charge of the songs, pointing to something and then Dr. Lewis got up and the beginning strains of the song started.

Baby, what do you say we just get lost?

Leave this one-horse town like two rebels without a cause

I've got people in Boston, ain't your Daddy still in Des Moines?

We can pack up tomorrow, tonight let's flip a coin

Brock’s eyes lit up. He loved this song. And she knew it? He started singing along even as he got up from the table and headed down to where the woman was.   At this, the rest of S.T.R.I.K.E. shook their heads.

“And we lost him,” Roger declared needlessly.

“Of course it would be nineties country,” Christopher chuckled.

In the front row of the crowd, Brock smiled at Dr. Lewis. Damn, she’s gorgeous, he thought to himself.

We can load what we own in the back of a U-Haul van

Couple of modern day Moses' searching for the promised land

We can go four hundred miles before we stop for gas

We can drive for a day and then we'll take a look at the map

Brock continued to sing, his eyes locking with Dr. Lewis’, a flush spreading over his cheeks as he noticed her giving him the once-over. Seems like she’s interested too, he thought as he raised the glass in a salute.

Heads Carolina, tails California

Somewhere greener, somewhere warmer

Up in the mountains, down by the ocean

Where, it don't matter as long as we're going Somewhere together,

I've got a quarter Heads Carolina, tails California

At the end of the song, he helped her off of the stage, smiling at her.

“You were great,” he told her.

“Yeah?” she asked.

“Yeah,” he responded. “Oh! Uh, I’m Brock, by the way.”

“Darcy.”

“Nice to meet you. Would you like to join me and my friends?”

“Sure. Let me just tell Jane and the others where I’m going.” Brock nodded. He then watched as Darcy went over to her friends, gesturing towards him, smirking when he saw one of the women roll her eyes but nod. After this, she grabbed the drink she had left with her friends and then came back to him, following him to his table.
