Work Text:
Luz shot up with a shuddering, gasping breath. Last she knew she’d been at Gravesfield Cemetery, clinging to the corpse of the one good thing to ever happen in her miserable life.
She killed Amity, killed her in a car wreck on their way home from their wedding.
She’d opened her coffin, drank one of the most agonizing poisons in the Demon Realm, and curled up next to her, with only the jeers of the most evil person she’d ever known for company.
“Luz?” There was a voice from somewhere. “Luz, can you tell me where you are?”
Her non-surroundings seemed to ripple and buckle.
“I-I-I-don’t know.”
“What do you feel in your left hand?”
“A-a-a-fuz-zzy s-s-sn-ake.” “Stringbean, my Palisman, Stringbean is in my left hand”
“Good, can you say where you are now?”
“My a-a-partment, the heating is broken. I’m cold.”
“Do you want a blanket?”
“... yes…”
Things were starting to fall back into place for Luz, She wasn’t in a graveyard, succumbing to a self-inflicted poisoning next to the broken body of her wife. She was in her and Amity’s shared bed, after their wedding night…. “
She felt like she was falling again. Then, a warm, soft blanket draped over her.
“Luz, it’s ok, you're having a panic attack.”
“It’s my fault.” Luz heard herself whisper. She felt a hand on her cheek, “can you look at me Luz?” Her eyes finally focused onto… Amity…
Amity, happy, kind, safe, alive Amity.
“Amity?” “Yes Luz?”
It was then, something gave way.
“AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIMSORRYIMSORRYIMSORRYIMSORRYIDIDNTMEANTO.” Amity let Luz fall into her shoulder, gently but tightly holding her as she cried.
After 15 minutes (that seemed like an eternity) Luz was finally calm enough to process what had happened. She’d had a night terror, a bad one, there was no car wreck, they rode their staves there and back.
.
“And then, Belos was there, telling me how horrible a person and-and-and. It was awful.”
Amity held Luz close and kissed her on the cheek. “It’s a weekend, do you think you can go back to sleep on your own, or do you want to watch cute animal videos until we both pass out?
Luz smiled softly, “Cute animals sound nice.” “Ok then.”
And so they watched until they were too tired to, and fell asleep to the sound of purring kittens.
Needless to say, neither of them had nightmares after that…
