Work Text:
Suki woke up to find that Eve had already left the bed. It was at this point she heard singing from the bathroom. “I've never known someone like you” Eve sang in unison with the song that was playing from her phone. Suki quietly got out of bed and stood near the bathroom door to listen to Eve as she continued singing. She couldn't recognise the song, but thought the lyrics were quite romantic. “Don't forget to kiss me, or else you'll have to miss me. I guess I'm stuck forever by the glue. Oh, and you.” Eve sang as she opened the bathroom door. “Don't worry, I won't forget.” Suki said, grabbing Eve as she came out of the bathroom and pulling her into a kiss.
Eve pulled away, looking slightly embarrassed. “I didn't know you were awake. Sorry if I woke you up with my singing.” Eve said as she paused the song and put her phone into her pocket. Suki grabbed Eve's spare hand and interlocked their fingers. “Don't apologise, I was already awake when you started singing. You have a really lovely voice.” Suki said as she looked up at Eve. “You said that the other day too. If you keep saying it I'll get a massive ego.” Eve said as she locked eyes with Suki.
“I'm only saying it because it's true, Eve. What song was it anyway? I love the lyrics of it.” Suki said as Eve pulled her phone out of her pocket. “It's called Glue Song by an artist called beabadoobee, Lily listens to her a lot. I thought the lyrics were appropriate for us.” Eve said as she pulled Suki towards the bed so that they could both sit down and listen to the song together. Suki sat down on the bed cross-legged and watched as Eve perched on the edge of the bed, pressing play on the song and placing the phone down between them.
As the song started, Suki held both of her hands out for Eve to hold them. They both sat there silently for the duration of the song, still holding hands as it finished. “Wow, she's a great singer. You're right about the lyrics though, they're very us. I couldn't think of anybody else I'd love to be stuck with.” Suki said as she looked up at Eve who had tears forming in her eyes. “I love you so much, Suki. I wish we could stay here longer, but I know we have to go home tomorrow.” Eve said sniffing slightly in an attempt to prevent the tears from leaving her eyes. “I wish we could stay here longer too, but unless the meeting we have tomorrow doesn't go well I doubt that's feasible. Don't worry though, I'll make sure we can come back as soon as possible.” Suki said as she rubbed her finger on Eve's cheek.
“Thank you, baby. I know it's not easy for you, especially with Nish being so suspicious. Anyway, did you say we don't have any meetings today? When did that happen?” Eve said as she pulled her legs up onto the bed so that she could sit in the same position as Suki. “They sent me a text message last night and said that they couldn't make it, so we're having a virtual meeting with them next week.” Suki said as she got off the bed and walked towards the drawers on her side of the bed. She picked up her phone and unlocked it so that she could show Eve the text.
“Here, look. Now we've got a whole day free together.” Suki said as she thrust the phone into Eve's hand before kneeling down on the bed. “You didn't have to prove it to me, I believe you when you tell me things. I'm not like him, remember?” Eve said as she gave Suki her phone back. “Sorry, it was instinct. I've gotten so used to having prove things to him that I immediately got defensive when you started asking questions.” Suki said putting her phone down on the bed.
“Hey, it's okay. I understand why you did it. Don't apologise for that.” Eve said as she rubbed her hand on Suki's knee. “Well in that case I'm sorry for saying sorry.” Suki said giggling. “Did you really just apologise for apologising? Blimey Suki, please just stop saying sorry unnecessarily. It's a good thing you're cute.” Eve said as she leant forward to place a gentle kiss on the end of Suki's nose.
Suki felt the gentle kiss on her nose and it caused her to lean forward and out her hand on Eve's cheek. “You're very cute too. We both act like we're strong, but inside were quite soft really, aren't we?” Suki said as she locked eyes with Eve again. “I suppose that's because we've both had to build walls twice as high as us to protect ourselves, but being with you makes those walls come crumbling down. You're one of the first people to do that, well apart from Stacey.” Eve said now tracing Suki's jawline with her finger. “I built my walls that high when I was a kid and then rebuilt them to have a window in when I first got with Nish, so he's only ever seen glimpses of the softer side of me through that window. You're the first one who has been able to push past the window and get to the top of the wall.” Suki as she melted into Eve's touch.
“I've not only climbed to the top of your wall, I've knocked it down. Only when we're together alone though. I've noticed you're still reserved when we're with other people. We can work on that though.” Eve said as she moved to be kneeling on the bed too. “Strangely, I thought it would have been harder to knock down your wall, but you seemed to have already started dismantling it for me when I decided to knock it down.” Suki said as she regained eye contact with Eve. “I only started taking down my wall because you make me feel safe and like you wouldn't let anyone hurt me.” Eve said as she tilted her head at Suki in adoration. “You make me feel safe too. I know you wouldn't hurt me or let anyone else hurt me either. You're the best thing that has ever happened to me, Eve.” Suki said as she leaned forward, before starting to kiss Eve.
As soon as Suki's lips collided with Eve's, Eve grabbed Suki's face and pulled her closer. Her hands then moved so that one was on Suki's back and one was holding her neck. Suki felt this and melted into Eve's touch, allowing herself to get closer to Eve. “I love you so much.” she said as she pulled back slightly, teasing Eve. “I know you do, baby.” Eve whispered as she pulled Suki towards her again.
After another moment kissing, Eve pulled back and took in the sight of Suki. “I suppose we best get ready and go down for breakfast.” Eve said as she started getting off the bed. “There's no rush yet, we can go out and get breakfast somewhere else.” Suki said as she grabbed Eve's wrist to stop her moving. “I'll pay, since you've paid for dinner twice.” Suki said, gently pulling Eve back onto the bed.
“That sounds lovely. How about that place we went to last time? I loved the breakfasts there.” Eve said as she pulled Suki into an embrace, her head leaning on Suki's shoulder. “I know you loved it, you didn't stop talking about it when we got home. What was it called again?” Suki said with a soft laugh. “It was called Moose Coffee, all their food is American or Canadian. Although I particularly enjoyed the company I had, to be honest.” Eve said as she moved back towards the head of the bed, taking Suki with her.
As Eve laid her head down on the pillows, Suki laid her head on Eve's chest. “I'm glad we've got all day together. It gives us an opportunity for some alone time.” Suki mumbled against Eve's pyjama t-shirt. “Alone time? Is that what you call it?” Eve said with a slight giggle. “I didn't mean it like that Eve. I was referring to us actually enjoying time with each other, not just that.” Suki said as she started blushing.
“You can say the word sex, you know? You're not going to burst into flames” Eve laughed as she sat up on the bed, Suki's head still on her chest. “You make me feel like I might.” Suki said as she picked up her head and looked at Eve. “Oh, do I?” Eve teased raising her eyebrow at Suki. “Yeah, you do. I hadn't thought about sex for 20 years until I met you. Then all of a sudden it became one of the things I think about most. You make me feel loved like nobody else ever has. You've changed my life, Eve.” Suki said before placing a kiss on Eve's cheek.
Eve stroked Suki's hair and tucked a loose strand behind her ear as she began to get out of the bed. “Where are you going? I said there was no rush.” Suki said looking at Eve, who was now stood up on Suki's side of the bed. “Wait there, I'll be back in 5 minutes.” Eve said as she put on her trainers and pulled a hoodie over her head. “I suppose I'll have to, I can't exactly follow you in my pyjamas.” Suki giggled as Eve opened the door to their room.
Eve exited the room and headed towards the lift. She pressed the button for the lift to open and was greeted by Erica. “Morning Eve, is Suki not with you this morning?” she asked as Eve stepped onto the lift. “I've left her in bed, she's still tired.” Eve lied, as she pushed the button for the ground floor. “By the way, has a potted plant and a box of chocolates been delivered to the reception desk?” she asked turning to look at Erica. “I think so, I hadn't checked the name on them yet. Are they for Suki?” Erica asked as the lift started descending.
“Yeah, I’m surprising her with them.” Eve said as she pulled out her phone, starting to send a text to Suki.
Eve, 9:05am
Might be slightly longer than 5 minutes, I got talking to Erica in the lift. Stay in the room though xx
Suki heard her phone ping and read the message from Eve, before sending back a response.
Suki, 9:06am
Don't worry, I’ll still be laid here waiting for you when you get back. Tell Erica I said hello xx
As she sent the message she placed her phone down onto the drawers next to her. She then heard her phone ping again.
Eve, 9:06am
You can start getting ready for the day if you'd like. I've got a surprise for you. Erica said she hopes you're okay xx
Suki, 9:07am
Okay, I'll get dressed and then brush my teeth once you get back with my surprise just in case it’s food or drink. Tell Erica that I'm fine, just tired xx
Eve, 9:07am
She already knows you're tired, that's why I said you weren't with me when I saw her in the lift. I'll let you get dressed xx
Suki put her phone back down on the drawers and walked over to the wardrobe. She picked out a leopard print blouse and blue jeans. She then walked over to the double bed, placing her outfit for that day down on the bed as she opened her drawer and picked out a pair of socks. She picked up her phone and started playing some music, the first song being Zindagi Jab Bhi by Talat Aziz.
She started getting ready as she was listening to the music. Just as the first song was finishing she received another notification on her phone.
Eve, 9:15am
In the lift on the way back, hope you're ready for your surprise xx
Suki, 9:15am
I’m more than ready. See you soon xx
Suki pulled her blouse over her head and then sat down to put her socks on. Once her socks were on she pulled on the blue lace underwear she had bought the previous afternoon. Just as she was pulling her jeans on, she heard Eve unlocking the door. She quickly paused the music so that she could speak to Eve without the soundtrack of Umrao Jaan playing in the background. “Oh so you have a surprise for me too, do you?” Eve said as she noticed what underwear Suki was wearing. “Well, if you behave yourself.” Suki said as she finished pulling up her jeans and sat down on the bed.
“I'm always on my best behaviour” Eve said as she approached Suki. “Anyway, do you want your surprise?” she asked as she sat down next to Suki. “Yes please. I always love surprises from you.” Suki said as she looked at Eve with a look of adoration. “Give me two minutes to sort out the things in my bag and I'll give it to you.” Eve said as she stood up and waved a rainbow coloured tote bag in the air.
“Why did you need to take a bag?” Suki asked looking at Eve slightly confused. “Because” Eve started as she pulled the box of chocolates out of her bag “I ordered you these from a flower shop yesterday and they delivered them this morning.” she continued as she put the plant down on the drawers next to Suki. “Why a plant?” Suki asked as she picked up the small pot and inspected it.
“Why so many questions? Don't you like it?” Eve asked as she looked at Suki. “No, I love it, I just don't know what I've done to deserve it” Suki said still looking confused. “Why do you have to have done something? Don't you think I can surprise you without a reason?” Eve asked as she sat down next to Suki. “Sorry, I'm still not used to accepting kindness from people. I love the plant and the chocolates. Thank you so much, Eve” Suki said turning towards Eve and placing a kiss on her cheek.
“The plant is an Echeveria by the way, it's a type of succulent. Succulents are used to represent enduring and timeless love.” Eve said as she stroked Suki's cheek. “Oh, love, that's so sweet. I'll be able to take it home with me too and Nish will be none the wiser.” Suki said with a slight giggle at the thought of Nish being so oblivious to the fact that Eve had bought her such a romantic plant. “What was the music you paused when I walked in, by the way?” Eve asked as she put her hand next to Suki's on the bed. “Oh, it was the soundtrack for one of the movies I loved as a teenager, Umrao Jaan.” Suki said as she started fiddling with the bottom of her blouse.
“You only do that when you're nervous, is everything okay?” Eve asked as she put her hand on top of Suki's, feeling Suki stop fiddling as soon as Eve made contact with her. “The main actress in it, Rekha, was my first crush. My parents always thought I liked her so much because I wanted to be like her, but in reality, I wanted to be with her.” Suki said turning to look at Eve with a slightly worried look, as if Eve was going to judge her for having a crush on an actress. “There's no need to look so worried, my first crush was an actress too. Why don't we listen to the soundtrack for Umrao Jaan together?” Eve said as she picked up Suki's phone and pressed play, making Dil Cheez Kya Hai by Asha Bholse begin to reverberate around the room.
“Thank you so much for this, Eve. The only people I've ever listened to this have been my family, so this is so special.” Suki said as she grabbed Eve's hand and squeezed it. “You don't need to thank me. I love sharing moments like this with you.” Eve said standing up and inviting Suki to stand up too. “I mean it Eve, thank you so much for my surprise. You're so thoughtful and kind.” Suki said, wrapping her arms around Eve's waist.
Eve began rubbing her hand on Suki's back as they embraced listening to the music. “Oh this is my favourite.” Suki said as In Ankhon Ki Masti by Asha Bholse started playing. “In English the title means From the Joy of These Eyes. It's about men falling in love with her because of her eyes, but when she meets her love interest Sultan Nawab for the first time, she no longer has space for anybody else.” she continued as she started swaying to the music. “Oh so a bit like us then. Your eyes were the first thing I fell in love with and now I'm not able to fall out of love with them.” Eve said as she swayed along with Suki.
“You love my eyes?” Suki said as she forced Eve into making eye contact with her by grabbing her cheeks. “Yeah. They're so mesmerising and full of emotion. When you smile it's like they start sparkling, but when you're sad they get wider and it's like you're begging for someone to just hug you and tell you everything will be okay.” Eve said as she stared into Suki's eyes, which were now sparkling. “Hold on a minute, I need to take a photo of this to prove it to you. They're so sparkly right now, it's like you've got a galaxy in your eyes.” Eve continued as she pulled her phone out of her pocket, standing back slightly so that she could take a photo of Suki's eyes.
“Can you show me?” Suki said as Eve’s eyes flicked between the photo and Suki's eyes. “I think I need to redo it, it doesn't look that great.” Eve said handing Suki her phone. Suki zoomed in on the photo of her eyes and her smile grew wider. “You're right, they are very sparkly, nobody has ever pointed that out to me before. And you're right about when I'm sad by the way, I am begging for someone to hug me. Usually you though, not him.” Suki said, avoiding using Nish's name in order to not ruin the moment.
Eve took her phone back from Suki and guided her so that they were both stood in front of the window, with Eve slightly crouching in front of Suki so that the sun was still hitting her eyes. “Oh there, that's way better. Look at how sparkly your eyes are. This is what I see looking at me basically every time I come into the Minute Mart. Can you see why I fell in love with you now?” Eve said as she stood next to Suki, holding out her phone so that they could both look at the photo of Suki. “Why don't we take a selfie while we're here? This lighting is amazing.” Suki said as Eve started opening her camera again. “We’ll do one now, and then another tonight after we-” Eve started before getting cut off by Suki giving her a gentle tap on the bum. “Just take the photo, Eve.” Suki said sounding slightly impatient but still managing to giggle.
At this point Eve brought her head closer to Suki's and outstretched her arm so that both of them were visible in the photo, both smiling and with Eve's arm wrapped around Suki's shoulder. “There we go, it looks lovely. Look at how happy we are! I'll send you this when I miss you at home.” Eve said as she showed Suki the photo they had just taken together. “I wish I could keep the photos you send me of us together. I can't risk it though, he would definitely find them somehow.” Suki said sounding disheartened. “I know, I wish you could keep them too. There are some you haven't seen yet though, mainly because you didn't know I was taking them.” Eve said as she swiped through the private folder in her phone's camera roll which was full of hundreds of photos.
Suki watched as Eve scrolled through photos of them together before noticing a photo of herself on her own.“When did you take that? I can't remember you taking that.” Suki said as Eve stopped on a photo of Suki leaning forwards on the counter in the Minute Mart. She had a pensive look on her face and sunlight was hitting her through the door of the shop. She looked like a goddess. “Oh that was the day I ended up taking you to McKlunky's because you needed cheering up. I'd been stood talking to Martin before I came in for change and you looked so beautiful that I couldn't resist taking the photo.” Eve said as she looked up from her phone and locked eyes with Suki. “You have a good eye for nice photographs. You should think about doing it professionally if the bap van and giving us legal advice doesn't work out for you.” Suki said with a laugh as she ran her hand through Eve's hair. Eve melted into her touch and kissed Suki's wrist.
“I suppose I best get changed out of my pyjamas. We still need to go and have breakfast.” Eve said before placing a kiss on Suki's wrist, her hand still in Eve's hair. “I'll close the curtain over again if you'd like, unless you're going to get changed in the bathroom?” Suki asked as Eve approached the wardrobe to pick out an outfit. “Can you close the curtain please? I want to get changed out here, not trapped in the bathroom.” Eve said as she turned to watch Suki close the curtain. “Still not decided what to wear? You can't have that many outfit choices left, we go home tomorrow.” Suki said as she approached Eve, wrapping her hands around Eve's waist from behind.
Eve picked out a plain white t-shirt and a navy blue sweatshirt from the wardrobe. “I love that sweatshirt. You wore it the day before the renewal, when I refused to kiss you. I'm still sorry about that, by the way. I wish I would have kissed you.” Suki said as she moved slightly to the right to look at what Eve picked out of the wardrobe. “Hey, don't dwell on the past. I'm going to help you make some happy memories with this sweatshirt today, so forget what happened and just enjoy the time we're spending together, okay?” Eve said as she turned around to face Suki. “Well hurry up and get changed, I'm starving. It's 9:25 and we still haven't had breakfast.” Suki said grabbing a pair of Eve's black jeans out of the wardrobe and throwing them onto the double bed.
Eve walked towards the bed and gently put down the t-shirt and sweatshirt she was going to wear before Suki picked them up again and started taking them off the hangers. Eve pulled off her hoodie and pyjama t-shirt at the same time, leaving her stood in front of Suki naked from the waist up. “Don't mind me, just going to get a bra, some boxers and some socks.” Eve said as she walked around the bed towards her drawers. Suki stared at her the whole time in amazement at how beautiful Eve looked. “I can feel you staring at me, love. Why don't you go and brush your teeth?” Eve said picking up her bra from the floor and then opened the drawer to pick out a pair of socks. She then picked out a pair of boxers from the Next bag as Suki was making her way towards the bathroom door. “Nice choice of boxers, by the way.” Suki winked at Eve as she opened the door. The boxers Eve had picked were the same colour as Suki's lace underwear, but had a paisley pattern on.
Eve quickly put on her bra and then she pulled down her pyjama bottoms and boxers from the night before at the same time, making it quicker for her to get changed. She picked up the new pair of boxers and quickly pulled them up. She stopped for a moment to look at herself in the mirror, looking at the boxers which perfectly hugged her thighs. After a moment of looking at herself in the mirror, Eve quickly pulled on her t-shirt as she heard Suki opening the bathroom door again. “Oh they look lovely on you, I told you it was a good idea to buy them!” Suki exclaimed as she walked towards Eve.
“I know you're hungry, so I'm going to quickly finish getting changed. Sorry for making you wait so long.” Eve said as she sat down on the bed to pull her socks on. Suki sat down next to Eve on the unmade bed. “Don't apologise, you were doing something very romantic for me. I should be apologising to you for making you rush.” Suki said handing Eve her second sock. “If you stand up and get your jeans on, I'll make the bed. Maybe go and sit on the sofa to put your shoes on.” she continued nodding towards the sofa, which had now been returned back to being a sofa instead of a sofa bed. “So that's what you were doing when I was downstairs is it? Thank you, love.” Eve said as she walked towards the sofa carrying her sweatshirt, jeans and trainers.
Once Eve was dressed, she looked over and saw Suki sat on the double bed waiting for her. “Right then, are you ready to go?” Eve said walking over to the bed with her right hand outstretched for Suki to hold. As Suki stood up, her stomach grumbled slightly, but loud enough for Eve to hear it too. “I think that answers my question.” she giggled as she picked up their coats. “Yeah, I think so. Let's go, love.” Suki giggled as she picked up her handbag and joined hands with Eve.
After 10 minutes of walking, they arrived at the café that Eve loved the breakfasts from. Suki opened the door and gestured for Eve to enter first. “I'll go and find us a table.” Eve said walking towards a table near the back of the café. “How about this one?” Eve asked as she sat down at the table. “That'll be perfect, Eve. What are you thinking of having?” Suki said as she sat down opposite Eve.
They read the menu in silence for a moment, before Eve finally spoke. “I think I'll have the Mighty Moose with white toast. It's a fresh potato hash fried with garlic, onion and Dijon mustard and then topped with two Moose style fried eggs and three rashers of back bacon.” Eve said as she put the menu down. “Oh that sounds delicious. I might have the Vegi Grande Bouche. It's their version of French toast and it's served with Canadian maple syrup.” Suki said as she put the menu down on the table. “What drink do you want?” Suki asked as she stood up from the table. “Can I have a glass of apple juice please?” Eve said grinning up at Suki. “Okay, I'll go and order for us now. I'll be back in a couple of minutes.” Suki said as she walked towards the counter.
Eve pulled out her phone and began looking through all of the photos she had taken during their time in Leeds. She scrolled through photos of Suki laid on the bed laughing at something Eve had said, a photo of Suki looking out of the window during their first meeting, and then she landed on a photo of them together in bed. She had taken it two nights before and seeing it again made her smile. The silence was then interrupted by Suki coming back to the table.
“You seem happy. What's making you smile like that?” Suki said as she placed their drinks down on the table. “Oh I was just looking through some of the photos we've taken while we're here. Remember this one?” Eve said turning her on phone around to show Suki the photo. “I remember you taking it, I can't remember seeing it though.” Suki said with a giggle. “Oh, that'll be because you told me to put my phone down so that we could spoon, remember?” Eve said as she handed her phone to Suki.
Suki started swiping through the pictures and saw the photos Eve had taken of her. “You've taken all these while we've been here? It's like having my own personal photographer. I love this one!” Suki exclaimed as she turned the phone back around to Eve. The photo was of Suki sat at the table in the meeting room, her hair slightly falling into her face as she sat reading paperwork wearing Eve's jumper. “Seeing you so comfortable in my clothes was the inspiration for that one. You just looked so deep in thought, so I quickly took it as I was stood waiting for the kettle to boil.” Eve said as she stared at the photo. “Your clothes always make me feel comfortable.” Suki said as she held onto Eve's hand.
The waitress from the café then came over with their breakfasts. “I've got the Mighty Moose and the Vegi Grande Bouche.” she said as she arrived at the table. “The Mighty Moose is for me, please.” Eve said as she looked up at the waitress. “There you go, and there's your Vegi Grande Bouche. Is there anything else I can get you?” The waitress asked as she put down both plates. “No, thank you. I think we're okay for now.” Suki said as she looked over at Eve for confirmation. “In that case, I'll let you enjoy your breakfast ladies.” the waitress said as she started walking away.
By the time they had both finished their breakfasts, it was 10am. Suki took a sip of her latte and looked over at Eve who started to laugh. “Oh, love, you've got a bit of -” Eve said, unable to compose herself, as she gestured towards her upper lip. Suki wiped her mouth with a napkin and realised that she had foam from her latte on her upper lip. “Okay, now I understand why you started laughing, I had a foam mustache.” Suki said with a giggle as she folded the napkin and put it on her empty plate.
“You still managed to look good with a foam mustache though. That's what's so annoying about you, you always look good regardless of what you're wearing. You even still looked good in that Minute Mart uniform, despite how visually unappealing it was.” Eve said as she rubbed her thumb on Suki's hand. “Don't even remind me of that uniform, it was awful. I'm so glad I don't have to wear it anymore. Also thank you for saying you think I always look good, I don't alway feel like I do.” Suki said as felt Eve squeezing her hand.“Sorry for interrupting, but take it from me, you're the best looking woman who has been in here this week.” the waitress said as she picked up their plates. “Oh, I- Thank you.” Suki said, starting to blush slightly. “See, I'm not the only one who thinks you're drop-dead gorgeous.” Eve said, winking at Suki. “You’re so cute together. I hope you have a lovely day, whatever your plans are.” the waitress said as she began walking away from the table.
Eve finished her apple juice and then stood up, putting her coat on before offering her right hand to Suki. “Give me a minute, let me just get my handbag and put my coat on.” Suki said reaching over to the empty chair next to her for her handbag. She then stood up and put her coat on, with Eve helping her take her hair out of her coat. “There you go. Where are we going now?” Eve said as Suki softly grasped her hand, guiding her past the other tables in the café. “I saw that there's an artists show happening at Leeds Art Gallery and was thinking of going there, if you don't mind?” Suki suggested to Eve as they reached the front door.
“Have a lovely day, ladies!” the waitress shouted as Eve opened the front door. “Thank you, I'm sure we will.” Suki responded as she closed the door behind her. “So, an artists show at the art gallery, eh?” Eve said turning to face Suki. “There are 90 artists from across Leeds having their art shown in the show and it's only on until the end of the month.” Suki said as she made eye contact with Eve. “Okay, we'll start from there and then decide where to go next.” Eve said as they started walking again.
They walked in silence for a moment before Suki stopped and turned to look at Eve. “What do you think we should do for lunch? I know we've only just had breakfast but I want to treat you.” she said as she looked into Eve's eyes. “Well if we're going to Leeds Art Gallery, I hear they have a wonderful café. Thank you for wanting to treat me, though.” Eve said, placing a kiss on Suki's cheek before they began walking further into the city centre. “Do mind if we sit here for a moment?” Suki asked as she sat down on a bench.
“Is everything okay? You're not feeling tired again are you? We can get a taxi back to the hotel if we need to.” Eve asked as she sat down next to Suki, stroking a hand through Suki's hair as she did so. “I'm fine, Eve. I just wanted to sit and listen to her singing.” Suki said as she nodded towards a busker who was singing a cover of Until I Found You by Stephen Sanchez. “Her voice is amazing. The lyrics seem very us though. I genuinely didn't think I'd fall in love again until I met you.” Suki continued as she turned to face Eve. She quickly leaned forward and kissed Eve, causing Eve to cup Suki's face with both hands.
As they pulled apart, Eve noticed that Suki’s eyes were now sparkling again. “Your eyes are sparkling again. You trying to dazzle me with ‘’em?” Eve laughed as she moved to hold onto Suki’s hands. “I don't mean to, my emotions just show themselves through my eyes. Anyway, should we get moving again?” Suki said as she started to stand up. “Yeah, it looks like she's getting ready to leave anyway. You sure you're okay?” Eve asked as she stood up and wrapped her arm around Suki's shoulder. “Yeah, I'm sure. Trust me Eve, I'd tell you if I wasn't. Should we do some more shopping after the gallery?” Suki asked as she pulled herself closer to Eve. “I think that's a great idea, I was wanting to get some gifts for Stacey's kids. I wasn't expecting to miss them this much, but being with you has made it more bearable.” Eve said before placing a kiss on the top of Suki's head.
Once they arrived at the gallery, Suki picked up a guide book that contained all of the information about the art pieces that were being shown in the artists show. “I always love looking around art galleries. I wish I could afford to buy a proper art piece and not just a print. It's be one of the things I'll be most excited to buy when I get my own place.” Eve said as they walked into the Central Court. “Well I don't think it'll just be your own place, we'll probably be sharing it.” Suki said, squeezing Eve's hand. “Wait, you'd want to move out of Number 41?” Eve said as she turned to face Suki, shocked at her revelation.
“Well, yeah, I wouldn't want to stay there with all of those bad memories. I don't think I'd stay sane if I did. You'd be okay with me living with you, right?” Suki asked as she traced Eve's jawline. Eve looked down at Suki and started grinning. “Of course I'd be okay with that. I'd love to wake up every morning in our own bed in a place we owned.” Eve said before she placed a kiss on Suki's forehead. They pulled apart and continued walking around the room in silence, Eve's arm wrapped around Suki's waist to keep them close together.
“Oh look at this. I love art like this.” Suki said as she pointed at an art piece on the wall. “According to the book this is Chance would Be a Fine Thing by Karl Russell Vickers. It says here that he explores obsession, pleasure, collecting and archiving through collages. Maybe that's why I love it so much. I used to keep a scrapbook as a child but then grew out of it because people at school laughed at me for it.” Suki said as she walked towards the piece so that she could see the details close up. Eve walked away from Suki as she was looking at the piece and scanned her eyes around the rest of the Central Court, eventually being drawn to a black piece of velvet with an image printed on it. “Now that, that is cool.” she said as she put her hands on Suki's shoulders and turned her around to face the piece.
“The guide book says that's The Magician, III by Stella Baraklianou and it's based on the first card of the Major Arcana in a traditional set of Tarot cards. The piece is supposed to make people have a moment where things click and you have a moment of surrender, before becoming your own magician. Given your reaction, I'd say that it worked.” Suki said as she read from the guide book that she had picked up when they entered the room. “I'm not religious, as you know, but something about Tarot cards drew me in when Erica died. Perhaps I was been trying to find reasons for why things happened like they did, but it kind of helped.” Eve said as she turned to face Suki who was now stood next to Eve. “Hey, don't torture yourself. If getting Tarot readings done helped you move on after Erica died, then they've served their purpose. You've got what you needed from them and you've moved on with your life.” Suki said as she pulled Eve closer to her, putting the guide book down on a chair near the exit to the room. “You're right, they served their purpose. Just like your scrapbooks probably did. Maybe we both need to get prints of these pieces once we move in together to remind us of our past as we look to our future together.” Eve said as they exited the room and walked into another part of the gallery.
After walking around the rest of the gallery for a couple of hours, they finally reached the café. As they walked inside they spotted an empty table and sat down. “What do you want for lunch? I'll pay.” Suki asked as she handed Eve a menu. “To be honest, I'm not that hungry. I might just have a cup of tea and a slice of cake.” Eve said as she put the menu down. “I was thinking the same, there was a nice chocolate cake with strawberries on top in the display case, I'll get us two slices of that.” Suki said as she got up to walk to the counter. Eve watched as Suki ordered two slices of cake, a cup of tea and a bottle of water.
Suki looked back over at their table and noticed Eve looking at her with a huge grin on her face. “Blimey it's like being with the Cheshire cat. What's made you smile that much?” she said as she placed the tray containing their drinks and slices of cake onto the table. “We've basically just agreed to buy a house together once Nish is out of the picture, of course I'm smiling this much. Speaking of pictures, look at this.” Eve said turning her phone towards Suki. Suki looked at Eve's phone and saw a photo of Arthur in one of Eve's shirts. “Aw, bless him. Did Stacey just send you that? He looks so comfortable snuggled up on one of your shirts.” Suki said as she looked back up at Eve. “Apparently he missed me so much he went into my room and took it out of my wardrobe. I might have to buy some gifts for them from the gift shop on the way out.” Eve said as she pulled her phone back towards herself, before locking it and putting it back in her pocket.
Suki picked up her fork and took a piece out of her slice of cake. “This looks lovely. I don't think it'll be as nice as your chocolate cake that Nish is always bragging about though. How come you've never baked it for us anyway? Do you think I'm not worthy of trying your chocolate cake?” Eve laughed as Suki ate the piece of cake that was on her fork. Suki then put her hand over her mouth and giggled slightly. “It's not that I don't think you're worthy, it's that he's not worthy and if I baked it he'd insist on keeping some for ourselves. I was thinking of baking it if we do something in the square for the coronation, so maybe you'll get to try it then.” Suki said as she watched Eve pick up a forkful of cake. “That would definitely make the rest of the square like you, making them all chocolate cake. That's a great idea, Suki!” Eve said before she put the forkful of cake in her mouth.
Eve finished her forkful of cake and put her fork on her plate. “Oh, that is amazing. Again, probably not as good as yours though, eh?” she asked as she put her hand atop of Suki's on the table. “If it was me I'd have put more moisture into it somehow because the cake feels kind of dry.” Suki said as Eve began giggling. “You're like Walford's answer to Mary Berry. Hey, does that make me Paul Hollywood?” Eve asked between giggles. “Well you've got the eyes for it…” Suki said as she looked into Eve's eyes, admiring how beautiful they looked in the lights of the café. “Not exactly, his are icy blue and mine are , but it seems I'm not the only one who fell in love because of eyes.” Eve said as she realised Suki now had her chin propped up on her hand and was still staring at her eyes. “Yeah, sorry about that, I was definitely staring for too long. Your eyes are more interesting than mine though, because yours change colour depending on the lightning, like right now they look green, but sometimes they look blue.” Suki said as she picked her head up and moved her hand to be on top of Eve’s.
“Anyway, we best get this cake eaten because otherwise they'll think we hate it. Oh and I need to drink my tea before it goes cold.” Eve said as she picked up another forkful of cake. As she put the forkful of cake in her mouth, she noticed that Suki was staring at her again. “Babe, you're staring again. Is there something on my face?” Eve said as she held her fork in front of her face. “No, it's just you look so beautiful, I wish I could take a photo on my phone but t-” Suki said, getting interrupted by Eve passing her phone over to her from across the table. “Take it on there, I'll keep it in our private folder. Then, once we're together properly, I'll send you all the photos.” Eve said as she felt Suki take her phone from her hands. “Put your fork down, love. Ah there we go!” Suki exclaimed as she took a photo of Eve smiling at her from across the table, her hair slightly falling in her face after having her head down. Her eyes were smiling too, that's how Suki knew that just spending time together made them both genuinely happy.
“Wait, let me see it. If you're going to swoon over it I at least want to see it.” Eve said as Suki turned the phone towards her. Eve looked at the photo Suki has taken, slightly shocked at the fact she'd only taken one photo. “You can take more than one you know. Don't worry, I've got enough storage.” Eve said as she handed the phone back to Suki. “In that case…” Suki said before taking multiple more photos of Eve. One of her giggling at Suki, one of her running her hand through her hair (Suki's favourite), one of her drinking her cup of tea, and then one of her reaching for Suki's free hand.
“I love you so much, I hope you know that. You deserve to feel loved.” Suki said as she handed Eve's phone back to her so that she could look at the photos. “I know you do, you tell me enough times a day. You make me feel so loved, Suki.” Eve said as she squeezed Suki's hand. “Anyway, I think we're done here. Shall we go shopping for those gifts for Stacey's kids?” Suki said as she picked up her handbag and bottle of water. “I think I might just get them something small, I don't want to spend too much on them because then Stacey will get mad.” Eve said as she felt Suki linking their arms. “If you're okay with it, would you let me pay for them? You've paid for an expensive dinner twice while we've been here, you've bought me gifts, and I'm so thankful. I know what would make you happiest is seeing those kids happy, so it might not be expensive, but it'll be meaningful.” Suki said as she tightened her grip on Eve's arm as they exited the gallery.
“You'd really do that for me? Oh, Suki, thank you so much. That means I'll be able to give Stacey most of the money I'm earning from this trip to help with the bills.” Eve said as she turned Suki around and pulled her in for a cuddle. “Of course, I'd do that for you. I might not be able to help with the rent, but I can help you in other ways.” Suki said as her head came to rest on Eve's chest, feeling Eve starting to fiddle with the back of her hair. “I love the fact that you've left your hair down today, it makes me feel like you're comfortable.” Eve said as she twisted a curl of Suki's hair in her fingers. “I'm always comfortable with you, even if my hair sometimes isn't, but I've got used to the discomfort over the years. I shouldn't have had to, but I did.” Suki mumbled against Eve's chest, feeling Eve sigh slightly at the thought of Suki being so uncomfortable for so many years.
As they started walking away from the gallery, Eve noticed that there was a toy shop on the way back towards the hotel. “How about we go in there? I'll be able to get them a cuddly toy each and I might get myself a LEGO set, if they have any I like.” Eve said as she looked down at Suki, who was now walking hand in hand with Eve. “You like LEGO? What else have you been hiding from me?” Suki said with a laugh, teasing Eve. “Oh there are still some things I've got hidden up my sleeve, I'm like a magician.” Eve said as they both walked through the automatic doors at the front of the toy shop.
Suki walked towards where the cuddly toys were kept and picked up a small unicorn that was covered in rainbow coloured spots. “Oh, Hope would love that!” Eve exclaimed excitedly from behind Suki. “What does Arthur like? He's what, 7? At that age Vinny liked dinosaurs, he doesn't like it if you mention them to him now, though.” Suki said as she continued looking at the shelves full of stuffed animals. “He loves dinosaurs! He listed all of his favourite ones to me before he went to bed on Wednesday and when I looked them up afterwards I discovered that they're all real dinosaurs. I think he said his favourite was a tyrannosaurus rex, which I'm guessing is this one?” Eve said as she picked up a stuffed dinosaur and showed it to Suki. “Yeah, that's a t-rex. Vinny used to have a big poster with all of the different dinosaurs on and used to tell me facts about them all the time.” Suki said as she followed behind Eve, who was now heading over to where the LEGO sets were displayed.
“Blimey these just keep getting more expensive! On second thoughts, I might not bother with one of these.” Eve exclaimed as she looked at the prices of the LEGO sets. “£55 for a LEGO bouquet of flowers? You’d be able to get a bouquet from the Bridge Street Market ****every 2 weeks for cheaper, plus you wouldn’t need to buy another vase just to display them.” Suki responded in shock as she noticed one of the price tags, causing Eve to start laughing. “You’re only saying that so I’ll come and see you while you’re at work, aren’t you? Or are you doing some sort of deal with Maggs to get a discount on flowers?” Eve said as she wrapped her arm around Suki’s shoulder as they both walked towards the till.
“Actually, I don't have any sort of deal with Maggs. I just get cheap flowers from her at the end of the day when she's packing up to go home, Nish never notices though.” Suki said as they reached the till. “Just these please. Can we get them gift wrapped?” she continued as she put down the unicorn and Eve put down the stuffed t-rex. “Yeah, sure. It'll be an extra £2, is that okay?” The girl behind the counter asked as she started wrapping the bear. “That's fine. They're a gift for her two youngest step-children.” Suki said as she nodded towards Eve who had a big grin on her face at the mention of Hope and Arthur as her step-children. “I'm sure they'll love them. Anyway, those are wrapped and that's going to be £18.” the girl said as she placed the gift bag on the counter. “Here's £20, keep the change. Thank you for your help. Enjoy the rest of your day.” Suki said as she picked up the gift bag from the counter. As they reached the front door of the shop, Suki felt Eve's arm sliding down from her shoulder and coming to a rest on her waist, pulling them closer together.
“Now, where should we go to buy a gift for Lily? She’s been asking for Charli XCX’s new CD since it came out, but Stacey couldn't afford it.” Eve said as she pulled out her phone to look for the closest music shop. “It says here that there's a HMV around that corner.” Eve continued before putting her phone back in her pocket. “You're so thoughtful, love. I'm sure they're going to love these.” Suki said as they rounded the corner onto the street where the shop was. “Ah there it is, we'll only be in for 5 minutes, I promise.” Eve said as they continued walking towards the shop.
Once they arrived at the entrance to the shop, the automatic doors slid open and they walked inside. “Do you know what the album's called?” Suki said as she noticed Eve was pulling her phone out of her pocket again. “That's what I'm going to check now. Ah, there we go, it's called Crash. You're looking for this.” Eve said as she turned her phone towards Suki, showing her the album cover. “I think I can see that on a stand over there.” Suki said pointing at a display of the top albums of 2022. As they walked towards it, Eve pulled them closer together and placed a kiss on Suki's temple. “What was that for?” Suki asked as they both continued walking. “Just because. Plus you've been very helpful this afternoon. I promise we'll go back to the hotel after this, I'll get us a taxi.” Eve said as she leaned over to pick up the CD from the stand.
“That sounds like a great idea, then we'll have more alone time when we get back.” Suki whispered in Eve's ear as she began standing up. She saw that Eve now had blush stretching from ear to ear. “Oh I- Well I suppose we best get to the till with this then.” Eve said as she returned to her upright position. “Come on then, let's get to the till.” Suki said as she spun Eve around by her shoulders and guided her towards the counter.
As they approached the till, Suki took the CD out of Eve’s hands and then placed down on the counter. “Just this please. Actually how much are those?” Suki asked as she pointed at a pair of earphones. “Those are £10. Do you want a pair?” the man behind the counter asked as he turned to pick them up. “Yes please. So that takes my total to £19.99, correct?” Suki said as the man turned to face her again, handing him a £20 from her purse. “That is correct. Do you want your receipt?” he asked as he put the earphones down on top of the CD. “No thanks, I think we'll be okay. Enjoy the rest of your day.” Eve said as she picked up the CD and earphones, putting them into the gift bag before starting to guide Suki away from the counter.
“What are the earphones for?” Eve asked as she turned to Suki on the way out of the shop. “For when we're on the train tomorrow so we can listen to your playlist together. I noticed that you brought some earphones and you have a headphone splitter in your briefcase so we could use that on your phone.” Suki said, using the lapels of Eve's coat to pull her closer to her, gently kissing her lips. “Been snooping have we? That does sound like a great idea though, I just hope you're okay with some of my music choices because they're not as you'd expect them to be.” Eve said as she locked eyes with Suki, who was now grinning imagining them both listening to music together on the train. “Oh really? I look forward to getting surprised then.” Suki said as she pulled away from Eve.
Eve pulled out her phone and ordered a taxi for them both. “Apparently it'll be here in two minutes, I just hope the rain holds off until we're back at the hotel.” Eve said as she held her phone in her left hand, with Suki holding onto her right hand. “It looks like it should, but even if it does rain it just means you'll have to get undressed quicker when we get back.” Suki said winking at Eve. “Oh I certainly wasn't expecting you to say that.” Eve said still blushing slightly. “This must be our taxi. That was quick.” Suki said giddily pulling Eve towards the taxi.
“For Eve?” she said as she climbed into the middle seat in the back of, Eve following behind her. “Yeah, you're going to the hotel, right?” the taxi driver said as she turned to speak to Suki and Eve. “Yeah that's right.” Eve said as she closed the door. “We'll be there in 5 minutes. I hope you're okay with my music choice.” the taxi driver said as she turned up her radio, with Your Song by Elton John starting to play inside the taxi.
Suki could feel Eve rubbing her thumb on the back of her hand as they were sat listening to the music that filled the taxi. The silence between them was then broken by Suki starting to giggle as the lyric “You see I've forgotten, if they're green or they're blue” was sung. Suki then turned to face Eve and they both sang the lyric “Yours are the sweetest eyes I've ever seen” at each other, causing them both to start giggling again. Suki then grasped Eve's cheeks and pulled her in for a kiss, which they maintained for a moment before being interrupted.
“You two are so cute, I hope you know that. If not, you know now. Anyway, we're almost at the hotel.” the taxi driver said as she looked at Eve and Suki through the rearview mirror. Soon the taxi pulled up outside the hotel. “Thank you, here's a tip.” Suki said handing the taxi driver a £10 note. “Oh there's no need for that, keep it. I'm just glad you two are happy. Enjoy the rest of your trip.” the taxi driver said, refusing to take the tip from Suki. “In that case, we'll spend it on a round of drinks on your behalf. Thank you for dropping us off. I hope the rest of your day goes well.” Eve said as she climbed out of the taxi holding the gift bag and pulling Suki out behind her.
“I've enjoyed today so much.” Suki hummed against Eve's chest as they walked through the door of the hotel. “Me too, it's a shame we have to go home tomorrow.” Eve said as she rubbed Suki’s arm. There was silence in the reception area which was soon broken when Erica saw them walking in. “Aw look at you two, have you had a nice day?” Erica asked as they approached the reception desk. “It's been lovely, we went around the art gallery and then bought some gifts for her step-children. Now we're going for a round in the bar before going back up to our room.” Suki said, nodding towards Eve who then held up the gift bag.
“I bet you're both great with children! By the way, did you like her surprise this morning?” Erica asked as she grinned at Suki. “I loved it. I still can't believe she managed to organise that without me knowing.” Suki said as she felt Eve squeeze her arm. “And this one is brilliant with children, she doesn't always believe it, but she is. She raised 4 kids on her own for 20 years and she's a dadi ji too, even though she doesn't look old enough. Although saying that, I'll be a step-nan in a few months myself so I can’t pass judgement on that.” Eve said as she looked down at Suki. “I can already tell you're both going to love the new arrival as much as possible, you'll be great. Anyway, I'll let you get on. I'll see you again tomorrow morning!” Erica shouted as Suki and Eve began walking towards the restaurant of the hotel.
As soon as they entered the restaurant, they sat down on the same chairs at the bar as they had the night before. “What are you having to drink, ladies? Same as last night?” the barman asked, recognising them. “Yeah, thank you. Can I have a glass for my beer though?” Eve asked as she handed the barman £20. “That'll be no problem at all, here's your change.” the barman said as he put the £9.25 in Eve's hand. Suki reached over and picked up three beer mats, one each for her and Eve and one for her to fiddle with. “Hey, you don't need to do that, just fiddle with my fingers.” Eve said as she noticed Suki was now rotating the beermat between her fingers, reaching out to put her hand on Suki's arm in order to calm her down.
Once Eve made contact with her, Suki put the beermat down. "Are you like this all of the time in Walford when I'm not with you? This seems like it could be something that you might need to speak to a doct-" Eve started, getting interrupted by Suki. "No, no doctors. Ashneet already knows about it and said that it's a self-soothing behaviour caused by anxiety or trauma. She said the same thing about me practically hugging myself when I cross my arms too. I've been doing it since I was a teenager so there's no point in going to a doctor about it now, it's just a part of who I am." Suki said as she stared at the beermat, not daring to look at Eve in fear of her reaction. "Well, in that case, just let me help you. I knew you fiddled with your fingers and basically anything you can fit inside your palm, but I didn't know about the crossing your arms thing. In retrospect that actually makes a lot of things make sense." Eve said as she stood up from her stool and placed an arm around Suki.
"How do you always know the exact right thing to say or do?" Suki said as she turned to face Eve, their faces mere centimetres apart. "Most of the time I just tell you what I think you need to hear and my emotions take over, but then other times I somehow manage to put all of my emotions aside and give you advice that I've been given in the past that has genuinely helped me." Eve said as she curled her finger under Suki's chin. Suki then kissed Eve's cheek, pulling away slightly before softly kissing her on the lips. "Thank you for always being so understanding of why I am the way I am, Eve, I truly don't deserve someone like you." Suki said as Eve pulled away and sat back down on her stool. "There you go ladies, enjoy your drinks." the barman said as placed their drinks down in front of them. "Thank you for the drinks." Suki said to the barman as he walked away, but looked at Eve whilst saying it, feeling Eve squeeze her hand in response.
Eve picked up her pint glass and took a swig of beer watching as Suki began fiddling with the beermat again. “Here, fiddle with this instead. I bought it earlier in the gift shop at the gallery when you went to the toilet.” she said pulling a keyring out of her coat pocket and offering it to Suki. “A mini stress ball? You’ve had this in your coat pocket the whole time and just remembered about it?” Suki asked as she took the keyring out of Eve’s hand. “I had one when I was inside because I needed something to help me focus and also that let me release my anger in a less destructive way, so they decided a mini stress ball that I could hide in my palm was the best idea. Now I have one in all of my coat pockets or on my house keys at all time. I knew it was there, I just didn’t feel comfortable enough to tell you because I was starting to think it was silly of me to buy it for you.” Eve said as she started rubbing the back of her neck, looking slightly embarrassed.
“Hey, don’t look embarrassed. I’m just as bad, remember? Both of us can use them in secret and nobody else will have to know.” Suki said as she grabbed Eve’s hand. “Well, Stacey knows that I use them because we shared a cell. We’re the only ones that know you have one now, though.” Eve said as she watched Suki discreetly squeezing the mini stress ball in her hand. “You know what? This actually helps. Thank you, Eve, if you hadn’t have given me this I’d have destroyed that beermat.” Suki said as she picked up her brandy and finished it. Eve took this as an indication for her to finish her drink too and after another swig of beer, she placed her empty glass down on the bar.
“Well then, I guess that’s us off to our room for some alone time is it?” Suki said as she stood up from her stool, her handbag already in hand. “We’re still calling it that, are we?” Eve laughed as she stood up and picked up the gift bag from the bar. Suki started smiling as she felt Eve’s arm wrapping around her shoulder and pulling them closer together. “I already told you why I call it that, and I’m sticking with it. You’ll just have to get used to it.” Suki said with a slight giggle as they approached the lift.
Eve guided them both into the lift and pushed the button for the third floor, with them being the only people in the lift as the doors closed. “I can’t believe it’s this quiet at 3pm on a Sunday, but at least we’ve got the lift to ourselves. It means I can do this.” Eve said as she turned to Suki and kissed her, pulling her closer using the tie on her coat. The kiss was soft, but passionate, and lasted the whole time they were in the lift. As they felt the lift stop on the third floor, Suki pulled away from Eve and both of them wiped their faces. “I guess this is us. Have you got the key ready?” she said as she pulled Eve out of the lift, practically dragging her towards their room. Eve quickly unlocked the door and pushed it open for Suki. “Can you pass me the 'do not disturb' sign for the door? We don’t want anyone disturbing our alone time now, do we?” Eve said as Suki opened her drawer and took the sign out of it, throwing it towards Eve who then hooked it onto the door handle.
