Soft pressure against his back. Warm sheets wrapped around his waist. An arm, strong but now lax with sleep, holding him close. Legs, thick with muscle, tangled with his own, skin to skin. The huffs of a breath tingling the small hair at the back of his neck. And the serene thump of a heartbeat against his shoulder blade.
Waking up to all of that wasn't a bad way to start the morning, Eijun smiled sleepily, yawning. He wiggled in the embrace, moving his body lower and off the arm he had been unconsciously squashing with his head. It was probably numb already and God only knew Miyuki could be a real pain about that. Cracking open his eyes, Eijun squinted at the early morning sun coming into the room through the messily closed curtains. The clock was showing only half past four, which was still too early to get up, even by Eijun's standards. He turned his head to the other side, careful not to jostle the other teen sleeping next to him.
The glasses were gone, but Eijun could still see the tiny dents on the bridge of Miyuki's nose. His fingers suddenly itched to touch them, reverently slide his fingertips over the worn–out skin, and he had to chew on his lip to resist the urge. Instead, Eijun rolled his hips, twisting around to fully face Miyuki. Unlike when he was awake, when asleep Miyuki looked peaceful. There was no tension in his brow, no teasing smirks quirking his lips, no worry hidden in his eyes behind a faint veil of mocking amusement. He looked calm and relaxed, and Eijun was pleased to notice how he was the only one Miyuki had ever shown this side of him.
He was less pleased about the said captain's lack of sleep when he wasn't there to (almost literally) tuck him in, but words seemed to bounce off the stubborn git like nothing, so Eijun had to work something else out to suit the purpose. What he did work out, however, had officially been his most brilliant idea – if Miyuki wouldn't sleep without him, Eijun just had to make sure he was always there to make him. It definitely didn't end as he expected it to, since Miyuki never went along with it willingly, but even the bickering they indulged in tugged Miyuki away from overworking himself, which Eijun counted as a win. As small as it was, a win was a win.
He smiled into the pillow that smelled so much like Miyuki that Eijun couldn't help but nuzzle into it a bit. He shifted closer to the other teen, hooking his arm behind Miyuki's back and pressing his head to his chest. The soft heartbeat filled his ear, thump after thump after thump. Eyes closing, Eijun's mind slowly shut off. Enveloped in warmth and Miyuki's smell – the musk, shampoo and soap meshing with the distinctive scent of glove oil hanging in the stuffy air of the room – Eijun drifted back to sleep.
He dreamt of Koushien again, of that dark mound under the bright summer sky... He dreamt of pitching there, number one tag on his back, the batter in the box, the catcher sending him the signs, the team ready to get the last out to rule the nation... He dreamt of the ball leaving his fingers, dreamt of it slamming into the waiting mitt with a thunder of cheers from the spectators, dreamt of hot tears of joy streaming down his cheeks, of harsh head rubs and bruising pounding on his back from his ecstatic teammates... But no matter how often he dreamt of that, no matter how it made his heart swell with happiness, there was one thing Eijun loved even more about this dream.
Because whenever he raised his eyes, looking past the sixty feet that divided the mound and the home plate, he would always see Miyuki there. Alone, as if he wasn't yet able to process what happened, as if frozen in bewilderment, as if praying silently in gratitude... His head was tilted up towards the sky, and Eijun could see the moment the slack lips curved into a victorious grin – so viciously elated Eijun felt the answering excitement thrum in his veins even though he was aware it wasn't real, that it was all just a dream.
When Miyuki's arms closed around him on that mound, in the place of their triumph, Eijun's breath left him in a throaty laughter. They won, they did it, they reached their goal. Eijun, the ace, proudly dealing the final blow to their opponent's lineup; and Miyuki, his captain, his catcher, his–
Miyuki's elbow nudging him on the back of his head jostled Eijun from his pleasant slumber. His brow furrowed lightly.
"Oi," he said, raising his head to glare at Miyuki, even though he could barely see through his clouded with sleep eyes.
"Sorry," Miyuki mumbled, stifling a yawn. "But my arm is weirdly numb for some reason, I wonder why..."
Eijun snorted. Miyuki knew very well why.
"And here I was having such a nice dream..." Eijun rolled to the other side, turning his back on Miyuki to sulk.
"Hmm?" Miyuki hummed, stretching his arms out and shaking his numb hand to make the blood flow through it again. "What about?"
"Koshien," Eijun answered with a grin on his face. Just thinking about it made his heartbeat skip. "I was the ace, of course, and you were my catcher."
"Obviously." He could hear the smirk in Miyuki's voice even without facing him. Arrogant bastard.
"It was the last inning and full count," Eijun continued, closing his eyes to remember the details. "The sun was really annoying and we were only leading with one run, so we had to finish it there no matter what because it was the bottom of the rotation and the cleanup was next so we would've been in a tight spot. And then you called for a changeup..." his rambling stopped when Eijun frowned. He turned to squint at Miyuki. "Why did you call for a changeup?"
Miyuki looked at him incredulously. "How should I know?" he answered, lips quirking as if he was withholding laughter. "It's your dream."
"Oh, right," Eijun frowned again. He shrugged a second later. It was Miyuki after all, he'd never understand what that guy was thinking, dream or no.
"So did we win?" Miyuki shifted closer, embracing Eijun with one arm over his chest and Eijun snuggled his back into him.
"Hell yeah we did," he answered, grinning widely.
Miyuki chuckled, hugging him closer. "Good."
Lips grazed the back of Eijun's neck in a gentle caress which had him turning in the embrace to face Miyuki. He nuzzled into him, nose pressed into the tender skin of the crook of his shoulder. For a brief moment, just as he closed his eyes, he felt like he was back in the dream – Miyuki's arms around him, the warmth spreading through his body, the feeling of bliss and excitement coursing through his veins. He sighed happily, rubbing his cheek against Miyuki's chest, with the tiniest blush.
"Hey, Sawamura?" he heard a soft, sleep-ridden voice from above.
"Yeah?"
"Let's win for real this time," Miyuki said, a tender brush of lips against the side of Eijun's head. "Koshien."
Eijun smiled, warm and bright, throat tight with emotion.
"Yeah, let's do it," he answered, squeezing Miyuki with one arm.
But even when their lips met to seal their promise with a kiss, Eijun couldn't help but think: With you by my side I feel like I had already won, though.
