Work Text:
At some point in the indeterminate future, it was guaranteed that there would be a cottage in the South Downs. Who exactly it belonged to, the neighbors could not be sure. However, they were pleased to find it often inhabited by a warm, book-loving, blue-eyed man-shaped being. His companion (or at least, who they assumed was his companion) was a rather dark, plant-obsessed, sunglasses-wearing, man-shaped being.
It was not uncommon for the one with blue eyes to be found reading a book on the porch while overseeing the one with sunglasses meticulously preening over a bundle of Job's tears or their apple tree that stood firmly in the front yard. There would rarely be a yellowing leaf or spot on any of the multiple plants populating their yard, a fact which both impressed and confounded the local neighbors.
Most often, however, the two would be sat inside and reclining in each other's company. Sometimes, a pie would be left to cool on the windowsill while they did little but converse with each other for hours. It was as if they had all the time in the world and they would rather spend it together than apart.
“Why do you like me?”
“That’s a bit of a strange question.”
“How so?”
“It’s like asking someone why they like looking at the stars. Or why they enjoy eating their favorite food. Or why they spend time with certain people.”
“I’m not quite sure I get what you mean.”
“I like you for the same reason you like me.”
“And that reason is?”
“Because you’re the only other one who understands. Because you walk in a certain way and dress the way you do. It’s because when I smile at you, you smile back - even if you’re a bit worried. It’s because, out of every possible being in the universe, you choose to be here with me. Because you’re my best friend.”
“That’s one way to put it, I suppose.”
“How would you say it?”
“I love you.”
"..."
"You alright?"
"...I love you too."
