Chapter 1: Pencils and Movies

Chapter Text

Muichiro Tokito’s life was perfect.

He was a high school prodigy who had skipped multiple grades.

He had won so many awards.

Other than being an orphan, His life was the definition of perfect.

That was until Genya Shinazugawa walked into his classroom.

The minute the messy, rough boy had walked in late, Muichiro couldn’t take his eyes off him.

The boy rolled his eyes as the teacher reprimanded him for his lateness and pointed him towards an empty seat.

The seat next to Muichiro.

Muichiro shuffled his seat over as the older boy sat down beside him, keeping his eyes on his work.

Genya didn’t intimidate him, he just seemed so familiar.

The more Muichiro seemed to think about the boy sitting next to him, the more the strange unfamiliar feeling inside him grew.

He knew he had never seen this boy before, so why did he seem so familiar?

“Got a pencil?”

Muichiro looked up at Genya.

“You didn’t bring one?”

Genya rolled his eyes. “Nooo, I just ask random people if they have pencils for fun”

This guy sure rolled his eyes a lot.

Muichiro fished a pencil out of his bag and tossed it to Genya.

“Thanks”

Muichiro nodded his head and turned back to his notebook.

The silence between them resumed for a couple of minutes before Muichiro was disturbed again.

“Got a rubber?”

Muichiro raised an eyebrow.

“A what?”

“A rubber” Genya repeated.

Muichiro looked at him disgusted

“What the hell is a rubber?”

“You know-”

Genya stammered, motioning, rubbing against something on his paper.

Muichiro looked at him dumbfounded.

“You mean an eraser?”

“Yeah, whatever if that’s what you call it!”

Muichiro sighed.

“Did you bring anything for this class?!”

Genya smiled sheepishly

“I brought myself?”

Muichiro scoffed.

“I brought my notebook as well!”

Genya protested, holding it up.

Muichiro’s eyes skimmed over the paper. Genya hadn’t actually written anything, the paper was filled with small drawings.

He flicked his eraser towards Genya.

“I’m surprised you even know what class we’re in”

“I honestly don’t”

Muichiro looked at him.

“Seriously?!”

“Mhm”

Muichiro picked up his notebook and turned it towards the elder.

“We’re in biology.”

Genya nodded and looked up at the board.

“We’re not in a lab though?”

Muichiro resisted the urge to roll his eyes.

“It’s a theory lesson”

The rest of the lesson was silent, neither of the two boys spoke another word.

Yet Muichiro still couldn’t rid himself of the funny feeling bubbling within him.

………………………………………….

The bell rang, signaling the end of the day finally.

Muichiro swept his things into his bad and tossed it over his shoulder, and rushing towards the door.

A hand reached out and roughly pulled him back by his arm.

Muichiro flinched and whipped around, absolutely ready to fight the person.

Genya let go and threw his arms up in surrender.

“Sorry! I didn’t mean to pull you that hard!”

Muichiro’s stance relaxed.

“You just forgot your pencil you lent me!”

Oh, right, the pencil.

Genya handed him the pencil and a scrap of paper ripped from his notebook.

Muichiro looked at him confused, but Genya rushed away before he could ask.

He looked down at the paper, unfolding it.

It was a drawing of Muichiro, with a small note scribbled on the side.

Help me with the homework?

Scribbled next to it was a string of numbers Muichiro could only assume was a phone number.

He turned to the door, but Genya was now long gone.

He slipped the scrap of paper inside his workbook and walked out quickly, he didn’t want to miss the bus.

………………………………..

Muichiro scanned his bus card and slipped silently into a seat near the front bus, simultaneously putting his headphones on.

He pressed play on his spotify and let the sound fill his ears, blocking out any outside noise.

He leaned his head against the window and watched as the world outside flew past, humming quietly.

His eyes fell on his biology textbook that was sticking out of his backpack.

The funny feeling returned.

The bus screeched to a stop and he hurriedly snatched his bag and hurried off the bus, eager to get home.

………………………………………………..

Yuichiro was in the kitchen when Muichiro made it home, cooking something on the stove.

He always got home quicker, considering that he was still in the normal grade he should be in, unlike Muichiro.

Yuichiro opened his mouth to speak, but Muichiro was already darting through the house, closing his bedroom door behind him.

He tossed his bag to the floor and spun around on his chair, feeling giddy.

He never usually felt like this.

He pulled out his phone and the slip of paper, hastily entering the number.

No one had ever actually given him their number before.

He didn’t even have any friends.

He finished entering Genya’s number and stopped, fingers hovering over the screen.

What would he say?

He milled over the topic some more, constantly typing and deleting messages to send.

In the end he decided to go with something simple.

Is this Genya from Biology?

The reply was almost immediate.

Yeah. Your Muichiro I’m guessing?

Muichiro sent a thumbs up emoji in response.

A blush formed on his cheeks as he stared at the phone, awaiting a response.

Yuichiro chose that exact moment to burst into his room.

Muichiro almost dropped his phone, jumping at the sudden entrance.

Yuichiro raised an eyebrow.

“You look like a tomato.”

“No I don’t!

Muichiro protested.

“Sure. Anyway I made food so come get some”

Muichiro sighed and pocketed his phone, following his brother out to the kitchen.

He sat down at the table.

Yuichiro had made fried egg on toast, normally a breakfast meal, but Muichiro didn’t mind having it for afternoon tea.

……Months later………………………………………..

Muichiro sat down in his usual seat, flicking a pencil to the chair next to him instinctually.

“Morning Genya”

Genya smiled

“Morning Mui~”

Muichiro hit him with his notebook.

“I told you not to call me that!”

Genya laughed.

“Your reaction is just too funny though!”

Muichiro scrunched up his face.

The two boys had become much closer friends since the day they met a couple months ago.

Even though they had known each other for a while, Muichiro still couldn’t rid himself of the funny feeling, or the idea that Genya seemed familiar.

He hadn’t brought it up, but something was telling him he knew Genya from somewhere else.

“Anyway, there’s a cool movie at the cinema, so I was wondering if you wanted to go with me..”

Genya told him, flicking open his notebook.

Muichiro raised an eyebrow.

“Are you asking me on a date?”

Genya looked shocked for a second before returning to his cool exterior.

“You wish!”

Muichiro smiled. “Sure, when you wanna go?”

“Tomorrow?”

They shared a silent nod of agreement as the teacher entered the room, ready to start the lesson.

He couldn’t wait to hang out with Genya.

…………………………………………………….

As Muichiro lay in bed that night,he thought back to his conversation with Genya.

“Are you asking me on A date?”

He wondered what it would be like to actually go on a date with Genya.

He imagined holding his hand and hugging him.

The images seemed so familiar, as if they were memorys instead of daydreams.

A memory flashed through his mind.

His fingers traced across the bandages, tears threatening to spill from his eyes if he dared to blink. This was all his fault, He was so stupid. A voice whispered softly to break his trance, Genya’s voice. “Mui, I promise it’s ok.” Muichiro nodded and smiled weakly. They were ok.

Muichiro’s eyes were wide open now.

That hadn’t happened, when had that happened?!

He must have been dreaming but it seemed so real.

It felt like he was reliving memories that he wasn’t supposed to remember.

He tried to cool himself off, breathing and telling himself it was just a daydream.

His daydreaming was really getting out of hand.

He closed his eyes and drifted off to sleep, but more dreams haunted him.

His arms were wrapped around the older boys neck as they sat in the warm water together. Their lips were connected, lost in eachother. This moment was all that mattered. Exhaustion and nightmares faded away, leaving their focus completely on eachother.

Muichiro sat up in a cold sweat.

What.The.Fuck.

His daydreams were definitely getting out of hand.

He refused to go back to sleep after that, adamant on avoiding these new dreams.

He didn’t want to kiss Genya.

These were just daydreams, nothing more.

Just daydreams.

………………………………………………..

Muichiro could barely look Genya in the eye that following day.

He flicked a pencil his way and sat down in silence, the interaction empty of the usual banter between the two.

An elbow jabbed his side.

“Why do you look so emo today?”

Muichiro avoided the older boy’s gaze, still not daring to lock eyes with him.

“I don’t look emo.”

Genya smirked.

“Uhhh you kinda do.”

Muichiro frowned.

An awkward silence passed between them for a moment.

Genya looked back at Muichiro.

“Sooo, What happened, a girl reject you or something?”

Muichiro finally looked at Genya, only to side-eye him.

“You think I would ask out a girl?”

“Yeah nah, your too socially awkward for that”

Muichiro shot a look at Genya.

“Rude”

“Rude but true” Genya shot back.

Muichiro couldn’t exactly argue.

He never really interacted with anyone except Yuichiro and Genya.

People just sucked.

They usually thought that Muichiro was rude and blunt, and Muichiro thought that they were dumb and naive.

It was safe to say that Muichiro had never even interacted with a girl his age, let alone asked one out.

Silence flooded the room as the teacher walked in, immediately beginning the lesson.

Muichiro exchanged a look with Genya. He wanted to continue their conversation, but didn’t want to risk a detention.

Couldn’t that old hag just have fallen down the stairs? He thought to himself with a scowl.

……………..

The lesson seemed to drag on forever, and Muichiro could not wait to be free of this classroom.

It had dawned on him that he had never asked Genya what movie they were going to see.

His mood only got worse as he imagined walking into some shitty movie that he had no interest in whatsoever.

Muichiro desired nothing more that to jump out the window in that moment.

The teachers words had become background noise in his mind, he didn’t really care about this subject anyway.

A voice cut through his mind, breaking his daydream.

“Muichiro”

His head snapped up to the front of the classroom, where the teacher was looking at him, seemingly awaiting an answer.

Crap.

“Uhhh.. What was the question again sorry?”

“What is the role of the chloroplast in a cell?”

Muichiros mind went blank.

“Uhhhh-”

He glanced over his notes frantically, but they had become a mess of scribbles.

Oh how he had fallen.

He glanced to his side in a panic, trying to recall any information.

He should have listened to the lecture, his daydreams had never been this bad of a problem.

Genya slid a small ripped note towards him, doing his best to keep it from the teachers eyes.

Produce energy.

Muichiro looked up hurriedly.

“They produce Energy!”

The teacher nodded, turning back to the whiteboard.

With a sigh of relief Muichiro smiled at Genya slightly. A silent thanks between the two.

How the tables had turned.

It was only a few months ago that Muichiro was the smart one giving Genya the answers.

How had it come to this?

Muichiro shrunk into his seat, ready for today to just be over already.

It’s just because you didn’t sleep properly last night. He told himself. Tomorrow everything will be back to normal. Everything is fine.

Only one more hour of suffering through this.

………………………………………………………..

Muichiro threw on his hoodie, walking up to Genya, who was loitering at the school gates.

Genya looked up from his phone. “Ready to go?”

Muichiro nodded.

Half way on their walk to the cinema, Muichiro worked up the courage to finally ask.

“So.. What movie are we seeing?”

Genya stiffened up immediately.

“Uhhhh about that-”

Muichiro glared at him, suspicion in his eyes.

“You did get tickets right?”

“of course! It’s just that… well the movie I wanted to go see was sold out so I had to get different ones-”

“What movie are we seeing Genya."

Genya sighed, digging a pair of crumpled movie tickets from his jeans pocket.
Hearts were plastered all over them, and Muichiro could barely read the title, "Falling for you"

His eyes widened as he stared up at Genya, who was looking away in embarrassment.

"A romance?!"
