Eddie sat at the table with the computer open and ready to tell his parents and sisters that he was getting married to the love of his life. He’d been dreading this conversation but also looking forward to it he knew that his sisters were going to be on his side, but his parents were another story. He was glad that Buck and Chris were out of the house for the day, so he could make this call. Buck had offered to be there for him, knowing how Eddie feared what his parents thought of him. But after everything that he and Buck had been through he realized that no matter what his parent’s thought Buck was it for him. Hitting the button, he waited until they were all connected.
“Hey little brother, great to see you.” Adriana said.
“Good to see you too. I miss you all.” Eddie said.
“Then why did you move away from us big brother.” Sophia said.
“I am sorry, I just needed to get away from mom and dad.” Eddie said as Adriana smiled at him.
“You look happy, and I haven’t seen you look like this, since high school really.” Adriana said.
“I know right and not just happy but relaxed and not stressed.” Sophia said.
“I am, Chris and I we couldn’t be happier. That’s why I am calling you two before I bring Mom and Dad in on this call. I want to tell you two why Chris and I are so happy.” Eddie said.
“Does it have anything to do with Evan, that Abuela keeps talking about?” Adriana asked.
“Yeah, he’s cute by the way.” Sophia said.
“And how do you know?” Eddie asked.
“I kind of follow him on Instagram. It’s how I get to see you and Chris you three make a cute little family.” Sophia said.
“Eddie, have you finally allowed yourself to go after what you really want and not what mom and dad think you should do?” Adriana asked as Eddie took his hand and scrubbed his face as Sophia and Adriana both gasped.
“Yes, I did and I am. Evan asked me to marry him, and I said yes.” Eddie said.
“How?” Adriana asked.
“When?” Sophia asked.
“Um well we’ve been together for a year, and well he took me stargazing with Chinese and Abuela’s hot chocolate. We laid in the bed of the truck and cuddled as we listened to music and after The Reason, he asked me to marry him in Spanish no less.” Eddie said.
“Wow that is so romantic, so when is the wedding?” Sophia asked.
“Well, I wanted to tell you two and mom and dad before we started on a date.” Eddie said.
“What about his parents?” Adriana asked.
“They were worse than our parents. The way he describes them is they weren’t bad just not present.” Eddie said.
“You three make a cute family.” Sophia said.
“I know I see it now. I just started to follow him as well.” Adriana said as there was a beep.
“Well, here we go, girls you ready?” Eddie asked.
“Let’s do this Bro, we got your back.” Sophia said.
“We sure do.” Adriana said as Eddie hit the button to add his parents in.
“Hey Mom, Dad, how have you been?” Eddie asked.
“We are good and you? Hello girls.” Ramon said.
“Hey Mom, Dad.” The girls said.
“So where is Chris? Thought he would be joining us this afternoon to?” Helena said.
“No, Chris is at the Zoo with Buck, Hen and Denny.” Eddie said.
“And you didn’t want to go?” Ramon asked.
“No, I did, but I need to talk to my family. Abuela and Pepa already know. So, I took this afternoon to tell you all.” Eddie said.
“Well Baby whatever it is we are listing.” Helena said.
“I must say son that you looked well rested, relaxed and happy.” Ramon said as Eddie smiled.
“That’s because I am rested, relaxed and happy for the first time in my life. Happier than I have ever been, even with Shannon.” Eddie said.
“Well tell us have you meant someone?” Helena asked.
“Yes, I have.” Eddie said.
“Will she make you a great wife and mother to Chris.” Helena said.
“Helena who says it’s a female.” Ramon said as all three kids gasped.
“Dad what do you mean?” Adriana asked.
“Look, I have known since high school that Eddie liked boys too, but he hid that part of himself afraid of what your mother and I would say.” Ramon said.
“Yes, a handsome young man who did what he thought we wanted, marry a woman and have kids. Yes, that is what we wanted.” Helena said.
“No honey that is what you wanted, all I ever wanted was to have my children happy and healthy, So Eddie tell us about this person?” Ramon said.
“Ok so I just told the girls and well here goes. Yes, I have found someone I want to spend the rest of my life with. He is everything that Chris and I need and would ever want.” Eddie said.
“Let me guess Buck.” Ramon said, Eddie couldn’t help but smile as he thought about his fiancé.
“Yes, it’s Buck. He’s everything that Chris and I need. He’s helped me find Carla who had been a godsend to get through all the health care crap to get Chris the things he needs. He thinks of Chris first and foremost with anything he does or suggests, he loves Chris as if he was his own. You should see him with Chris when he stays over, he makes breakfast, he even lets Chris help sometimes. The two of them are two peas in a pod.” Eddie said.
“I am so happy for you two.” Helena said.
“There is more than us being together. Last month he asked me to marry him, and I said yes.” Eddie said.
“So, if he didn’t ask mom and dad permission, who did he ask?” Adriana asked.
“Abuela and Pepa?” Sophia asked.
“No, actually he asked Chris.” Eddie said.
“Aww that’s so sweet?” Helena said.
“Yes, it is.” Adriana said.
“After all Chris is your son.” Ramon said.
“And he said that Chris’s opinion mattered the most. The two of them are Mi familia now.” Eddie said as they five of them sat there talking and laughing about everything and anything. Having a decent family conversation for the first time in years, where no one was yelling or screaming. Eddie was listening to a story that Adriana was tell when he heard the Jeep pulling into the house, knowing that his boys were home.
“Everything ok son?” Ramon asked.
“Yeah, just heard the Jeep pull in which means the two are home. Have we really been on this call for three hours?” Eddie asked.
“We sure have.” Sophia said.
“First time we all talked and not fought.” Helena said.
“Daddy were home.” Chris yelled.
“In here mi hijo, come say hi to your Tia’s, as your grandparents.” Eddie said as he got out of the chair and let Chris sit there. Eddie followed Buck into the kitchen and helped him empty the bags. “So, what is all this for?”
“Making dinner to cheer you up but by the sounds of it when we came in you all were laughing.” Buck said.
“Well, the girls are ok with us hell Sophia said you were hot, and then Adriana started to follow you on Instagram to see what Sophia was talking about. Then Mom and Dad joined and well I told them that I found someone, and Mom said she’ll make you a great wife and mother to Chris. Dad then said what makes you think it’s a female.” Eddie said.
“Wait what your dad said that?” Buck asked.
“Yes, apparently, he’s known since high school that I liked boys as well. So, they are ok with it long as you make us happy, which you do.” Eddie said as he planted a kiss to Buck’s lips as Buck wrapped his arms around Eddie pulling him closer.
“I am glad that your parents are behind us. I love you so much Eddie.” Buck said.
“I love you too.” Eddie said.
“Dad, Abuela said for you and Papa to come here.” Chris yelled.
“Well, we are being summoned.” Eddie said.
“Let’s go then Babe.” Buck said as they walked into the dining room hand and hand as they pushed the computer back as they pulled out chairs.
“Hello Evan, welcome to the family.” Ramon said.
“Yes, thank you for loving our son and Grandson.” Helena said.
“I am just glad that things worked out for the better and were all happy. I would do anything for either one of them, I love them both so much.” Buck said.
“So, Eddie didn’t tell us how’d you popped the question?” Helena asked.
“Well after I asked Chris for his permission, I talked to Abuela to see if she could watch him for the night and she said yes once she knew what I was going to be doing. As I left her house, she handed me a huge thermos of her hot chocolate, I had gotten Chinese and after Eddie got home, he showered and changed.” Buck said Chris looked from his dad to Papa he too was hearing the story for the first time.
“Asked me to dress warmly and he loaded the truck up and once I was done; he was waiting on me by the front door. We got in the truck with him driving and we drove out of the city to a remote area to overlook the city. Where he then got the air mattress out and placed it in the bed of the truck along with pillows and a blanket.” Eddie said as Chris giggled.
“I then told him that I had dinner and hot chocolate while we stargazed once we were finished eating, I played some music and after the last song on the play list I pulled out the box and asked him to marry me.” Buck said as Eddie smiled as he kissed Buck’s cheek.
“And I said yes.” Eddie said.
“Aww that is sweet.” Helena said.
“So have you two thought about when to have it?” Ramon asked.
“Well, we will talk about that now that you are aware of everything.” Eddie said, “Buck wanted you two to know before we set a date.”
“What about your parents Evan are you going to tell them.” Helena asked.
“Well, I am going to call them and tell them, but they haven’t been very talkative to me over the years. When the firetruck blew up and landed on top of me, they never called or came to see me, when I was swept away in the tsunami, I still didn’t hear from them. So, like I said I will try but no matter what I have ever done had been good enough for them.” Buck said.
“That’s why he has Bobby and Athena.” Chris said.
“Who?” Adriana asked.
“Our Capitan and his wife, they look at Buck like a son. They have been more parents to him then his own.” Eddie said.
“Well, when you two figure it out a date let us know and we’ll fly out, we can’t wait.” Ramon said.
“Heck if I get a week this summer I’ll be out.” Adriana said.
“Me too.” Sophia said.
“That sounds like fun. Maybe we’ll talk to Ma and Pepa and figure out a week and we’ll have a Diaz get together to welcome Evan to the family.” Helena said.
“That sounds amazing Mom. We will let you all know when we pick a date.” Eddie said.
“Papa, I’m getting hungry?” Chris asked.
“Ok well I hate to do this; it was nice talking to you all, but I must go start dinner for these two. Good-bye.” Buck said.
“Not all.” Helena said, as Buck said goodbyes and went to the kitchen.
“Buck knows how to cook?” Adriana asked.
“Yeah, our Capitan has taught him a lot as well as Abuela and Pepa.” Eddie said.
“But they don’t let anyone in the kitchen with them.” Sophia said.
“He’s making Abuela’s burritos.” Chris said.
“Wait a minute he knows how to make her burritos?” Adriana asked.
“Yep, and her tamales.” Chris said.
“Ok Mom must love him, if she is sharing family recipes that she won’t tell us.” Ramon said.
“What can I say she has fallen for Buck’s charm all he has to do is talk Spanish to her.” Eddie said.
“Well, why don’t we let you go so you can be with your boys; well talk later we love you son.” Helena said.
“Yeah bro.” Sophia said.
“Love you little brother.” Adriana said.
“Ok love you all, we’ll let you all know.” Eddie said as he shut the computer. He felt like a weight was lifted off his shoulders now that his parents were told, and they were ok. Next test was to tell Buck’s parents and hopefully things will go as well as it did with his parents. Walking into the kitchen there he saw his boys getting the burritos ready to go into the oven, this was all Eddie’s ever wanted, someone who gets him and loves his son this was his Familia.
