Chapter Text
It just had been a completely normal day a few days ago. So extremely average that it shouldn’t have been notable at all. The kind of day you forget about after a week or so. It had just turned fall which meant the leaves were starting to change to reddish hues and it was getting chillier outside. However that was as exciting as it should have been.
It should have just been another normal day.
Yet here we are. Children lying motionless on the floor of an old Mansion Basement as a Parade continues its endless march, the Circus continues its endless performances, The endlessness continuing to be endless.
Some citizens ran away from the festivities, perhaps already knowing the horrors that awaited them should they stick around. Others couldn’t help but sit back and watch. Watch as more and more carnies just seemed to appear out of thin air; but I think we all know that these new clowns, acrobats, stuntmen, strongmen, lion tamers, dancers, and other performers didn’t just appear out of nowhere. No. These were once ordinary people who had no intentions of ever running away and joining the circus, But here they were, now apart of the act.
Before I explain to you why, I’ll have to explain to you how this all came to be. Or at least try my best guess.
Let us rewind back to where it all started.
———————————————
Susie Awoke to the sound of her alarm clock going off, practically screaming into her eardrums it’s annoying beeping. She swiftly sat up and silenced the alarm, and by silenced I mean she slammed her hand on-top of the off button.
She checked the time of her watch. It was 6:00 AM, which was the time she usually woke up. In her arms she held a small plush bear with smalls tears and a missing eye which showed its age.
She yawned as she slid out of bed. She placed the old teddy bear on her bed, making sure they were comfortable. Even if they were just a toy. After that she slipped some slippers on and shuffled out of her room.
Once she had entered the hallway she was met with the smell of bacon and eggs. How Odd.
She hurriedly made her way into the Kitchen to find her Grandpa awake and preparing breakfast.
“Grandpa? You’re already up, And making Breakfast?” Usually it was up to Susie to make breakfast and wake everyone up.
Mr. Wonder looked over and smiled at Susie Kindly. “Ah, Yes. Come on in Pumpkin I’ve just made a fresh batch.”
Susie narrowed her eyes at the nickname, but let it slide this time. She walked over to a table and sat down.
Her little brother, Pump, walked into the room. He rubbed at his eyes tiredly. He yawned but quickly woke up upon spotting Mr. Wonder in front of the stove.
”…Grandpa’s cooking Breakfast?” He asked.
Mr. Wonder Chuckled. “I know, I’m surprised as well. I just thought you kids deserved something nice today.”
”That’s thoughtful of you.” Susie remarked.
Pump smiled brightly and scurried over to the table.
Mr. Wonder walked over to them and set down two plates. Both had a smiley face on them using Bacon and Eggs. She rolled her eyes at this, but internally she thought this was a nice gesture. Pump didn’t seem to care at all what it looked like, already chowing down on Bacon.
”Geez, Slow down you’re gonna choke yourself.” Susie told him. Pump didn’t respond, but he did slow down.
Mr. Wonder noticed that Pump seemed to be avoiding the eggs entirely.
“Oh dear, do you not like eggs? You know they are healthy for you.”
Pump shook his head and stuck out his tongue.
“Bleh. Eggs are gross though. All Gooey & Yellow.”
Susie sighed. “You can’t just live off of Halloween Candy forever. Besides you haven’t even tried them yet.”
Pump narrowed his eyes and crossed his arms.
“I don’t need to try them to know eggs are gross.” He mumbled.
Mr. Wonder thought for a moment, and suddenly had an idea. He grabbed some ketchup from the fridge.
Both Pump & Susie tilted their heads in confusion as their Grandpa began to decorate Pump’s eggs.
After he had finished the eggs now had Scary Pumpkin Faces on them.
”There;” Mr. Wonder smiled. “Now these are Spooky Eggs, why not give them a try?”
Pump raised his eyebrow.
”Spooky Eggs? For Spooky Month?”
Mr. Wonder nodded.
Pump considered these new eggs with his fork before slowly taking a bite. His eyes immediately lit up. The Spooky Egg’s were really good!
”Mmm!” He said. “Wow! These are delicious! Thank you Grandpa.”
Susie stared at them, shocked at how Mr. Wonder had figured out how to solve the problem so quickly. Usually she had to bribe her brother with Halloween Candy just to get him to try some vegetables.
“How’d you do that?” She asked him.
”I had to use a similar trick with you when you were younger.” His eyes drifted to an old picture hanging on the wall. “You used to be a very picky eater too. You’d only eat food if it was shaped like a bear face.”
”Why Bears?” She wondered out loud.
Mr. Wonder shrugged. “They were your favorite animal at the time.”
Huh. She didn’t remember that.
After he had finished his breakfast Pump stood up.
“Can I go hang out with my friend today?” He asked.
Susie thought for a moment before responding.
“Fine, As long as Miss Lila is alright with it.”
”Yay!!” Pump bounced out of his seat and rang out of the room, presumably to grab the phone and call Skid.
Susie finished up eating and collected all the plates on the table, bringing them over to a sink to wash them.
Mr. Wonder watched her do this, with what may have been sadness in his eyes.
”You don’t have to do that Susie, I can clean the plates.”
Susie shook her head.
”It’s fine Grandpa, I don’t mind.”
Mr. Wonder looked unconvinced, but he did back off.
It’s a good thing too. If Susie had let him do the dishes he probably would have forgotten what he was doing half way and go take a nap. It’s a miracle he even made breakfast that was edible.
Susie heard the distant thumping of her little brother running to the door. Most likely to go hang out with his friend. Looks like Skid’s mom said it was alright for him to go.
Grandpa sighed.
“Susie, If you wouldn’t mind could you go to the corner store for me? I have a plan for dinner tonight but I used up all the eggs I would need for breakfast.”
Wow. Grandpa really was going all out. Susie couldn’t help but wonder what the special occasion was. It was just a regular day from what she could remember. No Holidays or Birthdays.
”Sure. I’ll go grab my coat.”
Mr. Wonder smiled softly.
“Thank you Pumpkin. I don’t know what I did to deserve such good grandkids.”
Susie walked over to the door & the coat rack, grabbing her coat from one of the hangers. As she did so she noticed a very familiar sweater still hanging there.
”Ughhh, are you kidding me!” Pump had forgotten his sweater here. Without it he’s going to freeze.
Susie grabbed the Sweater from the rack. Oh well. She supposed she could just give it to him if she saw him while she was out.
”Bye Grandpa! I’ll be back soon!”
Mr. Wonder called back.
”Alright! Don’t be out too late!”
Susie nodded, and stepped outside.
