Work Text:

All she remembered was a small elf, running and shrieking playfully across the morning grass whilst a low and rumbling laughter chased after her, his hands open wide in a grasping motion. The soft and gentle kisses on her chubby cheeks. The high pitched whining when she had to wash. The stories about Moonelves slaying the wretched humans who killed the Dragon King. To Rayla, those were the good days. The good days when she still had Runaan.

Rayla lay awake in the glow of the moonlight, with only the gentle snores of Bait, Zym and Ezran to keep her company. These memories often occurred to Rayla and usually had her quietly crying alone in the dark. Tears ran down her cheeks as she softly sniffled to herself, not wanting to disrupt anyone who was sleeping. They had a long trip tomorrow across Xadia. That’s when she heard a noise. A rustling noise next to her. Feeling concerned, she picked up her blades and turned so she was staring right at it. She dropped her weapons.

Two warm hands had been placed on her waist and wrapped around her so that she was leaning on someone's chest. “C-Callum?”
“Ssh. It’s OK. You’re fine.” She couldn’t hold it in anymore. The urge had gradually built ever since she betrayed Runaan. She burst into tears.

“I miss him so much, Callum. I would do anything just to see him again!”
“It’s OK. Just let it all out. You’ll feel loads better.” So there she was, crying as quietly as she could and being clinged onto at the same time. How it felt so wonderful to be loved. Someone to talk to and share feelings with. Someone like Callum. “Do you feel better?” he gently wiped off the tears on her cheeks.
“I…I do.” she smiled gratefully at him and he smiled back. “Can we stay like this for a bit?”
“Yea, we can.” he replied, still smiling.

Hours later, in a cave at moonlight, a human and an elf lay, holding each other close and sleeping peacefully. Except, the noise had appeared again but this time, the elf couldn’t hear it. Instead, it was a snow white dove holding a coin but inside that coin was the memorable face of Runaan, screaming silently…
