Chapter Text

"Great work everyone!" Nijika's voice rang out, a customary proclamation that marked the conclusion of their practice session. The cadence of her words echoed a familiar rhythm, one that the other members welcomed with a relieved exhalation—a confirmation of yet another productive session.

As her bandmates celebrates the end of the session, Ryo stands silently in place, observing. While her outward demeanour mirrored the nonchalance she had cultivated, her senses were attuned to Nijika. Ryo would usually deny how attentive she is to Nijika. After all, it didn't match the cool and mysterious image she upheld, an identity she refused to compromise. But today will be an exception. Her observations held no intention of intrusion; they were born out of an unspoken connection and concern, an intricate bond she shared with Nijika.

Throughout the years that they knew each other, Ryo knows the kind of person that Nijika is. She’s meticulous, kind, and way too serious for her own good at times. Yet, today marked a deviation from her usual self, an anomaly that Ryo's perceptive instincts promptly caught.

Amidst the ebb and flow of the band's dynamic, Ryo noticed a symphony of irregularities in Nijika's performance. The cadence of her drumming carried a hint of clumsiness, a divergence from the precision that had come to define her drumming prowess. It was in the fumbled beats and slightly mistimed rolls that Ryo discerned an unspoken narrative. The sporadic lapses in attention, moments of her drifting gaze, all hinted at how Nijika is simply just not her usual self today.

The sounds of their band’s chatters soften as Ryo's focus remained steadfast on Nijika. With a goal in mind, Ryo drew nearer to Nijika, who was in the midst of sipping from a water bottle. It was in this moment that Ryo discerned a subtle imbalance in Nijika's composure. A question, softly spoken, hung between them, "Nijika, are you okay?"

"Eh?" Nijika's response carried a tone of surprise, interlaced with a nervous laughter as she attempted to brush off the inquiry, "What brought on this sudden wave of concern? Hahaha I am perfectly fine!"

Ryo perceived the artful deflection, a skill Nijika had honed over the course of time. She chose not to press the issue, understanding the underlying reason behind the evasion. Scanning the room, her gaze landed on the two other girls who were diligently packing their belongings. Ryo exchanged a meaningful glance with Nijika, silently conveying her intention to address the matter later. With purposeful steps, she made her way over to the two guitarists.

Nijika let out a breath she didn’t know she was holding. She shook her head and promptly stood up to join the rest of her band.

"Bocchi-chan! Kita-chan! Bye bye ~"

"Bocchi, Ikuyo, bye bye."

As the two guitarist bid their farewells and left Starry, Nijika turns towards and posed a familiar question, "So, dinner at my place?" It had become somewhat of a habit, given the countless times Ryo had lingered after practice to share a meal at the Ichiji residence. Ryo responded with a soft hum, tugging gently at Nijika's sleeve, coaxing her to turn around and meet her gaze.

In the ensuing silence, their eyes locked in an unspoken communication. It was a brief standoff, a battle of wills that Nijika knew she could never win against Ryo's unwavering determination. She broke the gaze, casting her eyes downward, fingers fidgeting as she mumbled, "It’s… It’s nothing big. I am just worried."

"Is this about the upcoming gig next month?" Ryo ventured, her voice a soothing balm to Nijika's unease.

Instead of an immediate response, Nijika leaned her head gently on Ryo's shoulder, and softly nods. Ryo could feel the weight of Nijika's self-imposed responsibilities, something she both admired and longed to help shoulder. Until Nijika is ready to accept that support, all Ryo could offer was a comforting presence.

"Well, you checked it didn’t you?"

Nijika nodded.

"You asked Seika about the reputation of the venue?"

Another nod.

"And she said they are okay?"

Yet another nod.

"Then," Ryo's hand found its place on Nijika's head, her fingers gently patting in a way that she knew brought comfort to her, "then everything will be just fine."

Reluctantly, Nijika moved away from Ryo's shoulder, her worries still lingering. "But what if—"

Anticipating Nijika's continuing doubts, Ryo countered with a warm smile, "Then we’ll just split the trauma four ways."

Nijika blushed, her retort soft, "I can't stand you," as she embraced Ryo tenderly. Ryo simply hummed in response, playfully reminding her, "You should follow your own advice about avoiding the 3Bs." Nijika tightened her hold, muttering, "S-shut up."

Outside the door, the two of them cherished this intimate moment before Seika's call from within Starry interrupted, summoning them back to the reality of closing up the studio.

[ Next day at school ]

The lunchtime bell rang as it signals that the school day had briefly paused for a midday break. Ryo leaned back on her chair, stretching her arms after taking a long nap during the lesson. She patiently waits for Nijika to bring out their lunch boxes, something that she has been looking forward to.

Despite the habitual casualness of this routine, Ryo's gaze bore a heightened intensity as she focused on Nijika. Nijika's silence had marked the day so far, an anomaly in her otherwise vibrant presence. Even as they unpacked their lunch, Ryo couldn't dismiss the nagging feeling that something was amiss. Concerned, she contemplated broaching the topic with Nijika when a group of their classmates approached her.

"Ijichi-san! Are you free now?"

"Ohh! Yes! How could I help you?" Nijika instantly puts on a smile as she addressed their classmates. The smile from Nijika is infectious and their classmates eagerly return one of their own as they proceed with the task at hand.

Every time something like this happen, Ryo is once again served a stark reminder of a reality that often lingered in the background - Nijika's popularity. While Ryo had her own recognition and popularity within the school, it is entirely different from Nijika's. Nijika was the dependable senior, the friendly classmate, the responsible class rep that everyone cherished. It wasn't only Ryo's heart that held Nijika dear; it seemed the entire school shared in that sentiment.

Ryo continued to watch, her curiosity mingling with admiration as she observed Nijika's interactions with their classmates. It was clear that Nijika, always the kind and considerate soul, was too polite to turn them away even though she appeared overwhelmed. It was one of the many things that endeared Nijika to Ryo—the genuine kindness that flowed effortlessly from her.

However, as minutes stretched into an eternity, Ryo sensed Nijika's discomfort. Her eyes met Nijika's, and in that shared moment of silent understanding, Ryo understood what Nijika is asking. Ryo looked up to the group with her usual aloof look, her intrusion to the conversation signifies a graceful exit for Nijika. "Nijika," she began, her voice the usual monotonous, "I want soda. Let’s go."

Nijika's eyes sparkled with gratitude as she seized the lifeline Ryo had thrown her way. "Oh, right! Sorry, guys, but I've got to go! Lunch is almost over. I’ll catch up with you guys another time, though!" The classmates, understanding the hint, nodded and bid their farewells. As the couple walked away, Nijika turned to Ryo with a dramatic proclamation, "You're a lifesaver, Ryo~"

"I just wanted the soda." Nijika playfully pushed Ryo away.

Ryo was well aware that their school, and especially their classmates, had long pieced together the inseparable bond she shared with Nijika. Ryo couldn't help but chuckle inwardly at the amused times when their classmates would conveniently find reasons to excuse themselves, granting the two a semblance of privacy. She find it even more hilarious that Nijika herself, despite being the more perceptive one out of the two, has yet to realise that the school has already crowned them as the "it couple" of the school.

Before lunchtime neared its end, they made their way to the school's rooftop, a hidden sanctuary of tranquility amidst the bustling campus. It had become their secret refuge, a place where they could sit together in silent companionship, far removed from the prying eyes and speculative whispers below. There, on the sun-warmed rooftop, they settled down side by side. Nijika leans her head on Ryo’s shoulder, letting out a tired sigh.

"You okay?" Ryo gently inquired.

"Just tired," Nijika replied, her words a mere whisper.

They sat there, enveloped in a peaceful silence as the gentle breeze played with their hair, the only sound being the soft rustling of leaves in the distance. Nijika succumbed to the alluring call of a peaceful slumber, her breathing steady and calm. Moments slipped away, unnoticed in the serene stillness of their rooftop haven. Time seemed to stand still, as Ryo watched over Nijika with a fondness that words couldn't express.

This rooftop held a special significance to Ryo. It was here that Nijika had officially invited Ryo to join her band, a pivotal moment that etched itself into Ryo's heart. In that instance, Nijika, like a guiding light, had illuminated the path ahead when Ryo's future seemed shrouded in uncertainty and darkness. It was a memory that Ryo would forever cherish, a beacon of hope that had pierced through her uncertainty after leaving her previous band.

The school bell chimed, breaking the peace on the rooftop and as a reminder that they were now late for their next class. Ryo knew that she might face a scolding, especially from a particular dorito. Nevertheless, she considered it a small cost to bear for the tranquil serenity they had just experienced. Ryo's gaze returned to Nijika, her face peaceful in slumber, and a quiet determination seized her.

With a click of her phone's camera, Ryo captured the peaceful expression gracing Nijika's face.

As the final school bell chimed its melodic end to the day's lessons, a collective sigh of relief reverberated through the classrooms. Students scrambled to pack their bags, eager to escape.

Nijika, however, performed this routine in uncharacteristic silence, her expression clouded with pent-up frustration. She swung her bag over her shoulder with more force than necessary and stormed out of the classroom, her steps brimming with anger. Ryo, who had been quietly observing the situation, immediately followed in her girlfriend's wake, knowing what brought on this temporary cold treatment.

/flashback/

As Ryo was setting the image she took as her home screen wallpaper, Nijika jolted awake. She quickly asked Ryo for the time and has gotten a nonchalant "2:30pm" response. Instinctively, she pinched and pulled hard on Ryo’s cheek as a reproach for not waking her at all, "BAKA!"

Hurriedly, they rushed to their classroom, but it was already too late. The teacher, already well into the lesson, cast a stern glance their way as they entered. They were reprimanded for their tardiness, especially for Nijika since she was the class rep. As punishment, they were ordered to stand outside the classroom for the remainder of the lesson.

/flashback ends/

Ryo accepted the blame with a nod, deciding that it was best to let Nijika simmer down. Ryo knew that Nijika's anger was fleeting, a mere momentary flare-up, and she respected her girlfriend's need to collect herself. They shared a bond that transcended words, and sometimes, silence was the most potent form of understanding.

With the promise of band practice ahead, Ryo and Nijika slowly made their way towards Starry. The band had recently gained a measure of popularity, and it was increasingly common for admirers to approach them, especially Ryo.

Soon enough, Ryo found herself swarmed by a few fangirls, excitedly requesting pictures and signatures. Nijika, on the other hand, remained composed and unruffled, standing to the side and waiting patiently for Ryo, as this was a usual occurrence. She occupied herself with her phone, scrolling through messages and sending an update to the other bandmates that they will be a little late for practice.

While posing for a few photos with the fans, out of the corner of her eye, Ryo couldn't help but notice a particularly good-looking fan who seemed particularly intent on Nijika. The young man exuded an air of confidence, his steps purposeful as he closed the gap between them.

Nijika, who was engrossed in her phone, only glanced up when the fan was almost upon her. He wore a confident grin, his words infused with a touch of flirtation. "Hey there," he began, his voice smooth as silk, "I've been following your band for a while now. You guys are really something."

Nijika, ever polite and accommodating, offered a gracious smile. "Thank you so much! We will continue to do our best!"

As the conversation continued, it became increasingly clear that the fan's intentions weren't entirely innocent. He began to lean in a bit too close, invading Nijika's personal space. His compliments shifted from the band's music to her appearance. "You are really cute. Even more so in person," the fan put his hand Nijika’s arm, a gesture that sent a shiver of discomfort down Nijika's spine.

Ryo, who had been watching this unfold from a short distance away, couldn't ignore the unease that began to settle in her chest. Jealousy mixed with concern, creating a potent cocktail of emotions. She knew that, while Nijika occasionally offered a comforting touch to those within her inner circle, she was typically uncomfortable with physical contact from people outside that close-knit group. And it was evident to Ryo that Nijika was growing increasingly uneasy as the fan persisted, her instincts telling her that the boundaries of Nijika’s personal space were being overstepped. Her heart raced, a mix of protective instincts and jealousy coursing through her veins.

Without hesitation, Ryo abandoned her group of fans and approached them, her very presence serving as a protective shield. She slid her arm around Nijika's waist, gently but firmly pull her away from the fan. Her tone icy and her glare hardened as she offered a quick, "Sorry, we're in a bit of a hurry," before holding onto Nijika's hand as they moved away from the scene.

Nijika in her relief, willingly allowed herself to be guided away. She tighten her hold on Ryo's hands, finding solace in her girlfriend's protective actions. Ryo didn't release Nijika's hand, her eyes scanning their surroundings to ensure they were far enough from the overly persistent fan. Turning her gaze back to Nijika, Ryo couldn't help but notice her slight panting. Concern etched on her face, she asked, "Nijika, are you okay?"

In an attempt to brush off Ryo's worries, Nijika mustered a weak smile. "Oh, it's nothing. I just... you were walking really fast."

Ryo found that explanation somewhat strange; they hadn't walked that long for Nijika to be panting. But she decided not to press the issue and instead offered a comforting smile and a nod of understanding.

Nijika then leaned in, lips brushing against Ryo's cheek, and whispered, "Thanks for stepping in back there." She made sure no one was within earshot before planting a chaste kiss. Flustered and momentarily speechless, Ryo's heart raced even faster. She couldn't find the words to respond, so she simply responded with a warm squeeze of her hand, hoping that it conveys what she wanted to say.

However, as they continued on their way to Starry, Ryo's unease resurfaced. It gnawed at her like a persistent itch. The memory of the pushy fan's intrusion weighed on her, and she couldn't help but feel protective of Nijika.

Unable to keep her emotions within herself any longer, Ryo spoke up. "I don't like that he touched you like that," she muttered, her voice low but firm. "You should wash your clothes later." Nijika's response was an incredulous, "Ehh?!" Her wide-eyed expression was a mix of surprise and amusement as she turned to Ryo.

Before Nijika could retort to Ryo’s random possessiveness, the sound of footsteps came from behind them.

"Ryo senpai! Ijichi senpai! We’re here!" Kita shouted as she pulls along a Bocchi who was struggling to keep up with the energetic girl. They exchanged their greeting and entered Starry for their band practice, with the upcoming gig in mind.

Band practice commenced, and from the very start, it was evident that Nijika was even more off her game than the previous practice. Ryo, who had been growing increasingly concerned, could hardly focus on her own playing.

As the song continued, Ryo's frustration mounted. She knew that Nijika was pushing herself too hard, but she wasn’t sure if it is because Nijika is trying to prove that the earlier incident with the fan hadn't affected her or this is something else entirely. However, the signs were undeniable as Nijika’s drumming continue to lose its usual precision. Unable to bear it any longer and wanting to get to the bottom of things, Ryo halted the practice abruptly, which left Bocchi and Kita bewildered. Nijika, too, appeared taken aback by the unexpected pause.

"You're not yourself today," Ryo stated firmly, her gaze locked onto Nijika's flushed face. This time, Nijika's condition was far more pronounced. She was panting heavily, her face flushed with a worrisome red. Ryo knew instinctively that something was seriously amiss, and her worry for intensified.

Nijika, stubborn and determined not to show any vulnerability, tried to brush off Ryo's concern with a forced smile. "I'm fine, really. I just got carried away with the drumming."

"Why is she so stubborn when it comes to such things…" Ryo thought as her determination to get to the bottom of Nijika's condition propelled her forward. With a measure pace, she walked towards Nijika, aware of her other two bandmates’ confusion. She reached out and gently placed the back of her hand against Nijika's forehead, her brow furrowing as she assessed her temperature. It confirmed her suspicions - Nijika had a fever.

Despite the mounting evidence, Nijika, true to her nature, continued to downplay her condition. She brushed off Ryo's hand with another weak smile and said, "I'm fine, really. I just got all worked up from that intense drumming! Hahaha, let me cool down a bit. I'll be right back!"

Nijika rose unsteadily, her steps wavering as she moved toward the door. Ryo exchanged a concerned glance with Bocchi and Kita, who shared her unease about Nijika's condition. Yet, they both also understood Nijika's stubborn streak and decided to let her have a moment to freshen up.

However, just as Nijika approached the door, the strength in her legs failed her and she started to tilt forward. Panic surged through Ryo as she watched Nijika’s impending collapse unfold in slow motion.

"Nijika!"
