Where We Used To Play

Summary:

Sunny and Kel attempt to sneak out to Hobbeez in the middle of the night for the first time in a long while, but it doesn't go exactly as planned.

[Suntan September 23rd: Sneaking Out]

Work Text:

Sunny certainly wasn’t expecting to wake up to the sound of rocks hitting his window. Confused and startled, he quickly got up, in order to look and see what was going on, or who could possibly be down there. He doubted anyone was throwing rocks at he and his sister’s room for her, and he meant no offense by this. He just couldn’t imagine who would be doing that in that case.

However, Sunny had a feeling that he knew who was out there waiting for him. He rubbed his eyes as he looked out the window. It had been a long time since he’d seen this exact sight at this time of night, but, standing out there throwing rocks at his window, was his one and only boyfriend. The moment he saw him, Kel gave him a big smile. Aw. Sunny waved, trying to communicate that he’d be down there in a moment.

Sunny did his very best to not wake up Mari as he exited their shared bedroom, and luckily enough, he was successful, just as he had hoped. He rushed down the stairs, still trying to keep silent until he got out of the house. Finally, he reached the front door, and by the time that he opened it to go and see Kel, Kel was already there waiting for him, the same smile that he had seen on him just a minute ago still on his face. “Hi, Sunny!” He beamed the second Sunny closed the door behind him. “I know it’s been a while since we last did this, but…you wanna go to Hobbeez?”

Sunny gave a small smile, too. “Sure,” he said with a nod. It really had been a while since they’d last done this; he was pretty sure it had been about four years ago…long before they were dating. Wow, had it really been that long? “What made you think to do this again?”

Kel shrugged, reaching out his hand for Sunny to take. He did. “I don’t know. I was just lying in bed, and I suddenly thought of it, and I really wanted to again,” he chuckled. “It was a lot of fun back then, and I’m sure it still will be, right?”

The two began to walk down their street in order to get to Faraway Plaza, which wasn’t all that far away. “Yeah,” Sunny agreed. There was no reason to argue with that. Any time spent with Kel was always good, and he was certain of that.

“By the way,” Kel began to ask, “Were you sleeping? I, uh,” he laughed, nervously, “I didn’t think of that until just now.” His free hand rubbed the back of his own neck and he averted his gaze.

“I was. But it’s okay, I don’t mind. I’m happy to see you, anyway,” Sunny said, before adding, “Plus, it’s the weekend. So I can always just sleep in.”

Kel smiled at that, seemingly quite relieved to hear what he’d said. “That’s good..! And, yeah, that’s true! I’ll probably be passed out until twelve p.m., honestly. Maybe even later, depending on what time I end up getting to sleep…”

Sunny shrugged. “Well, that’s what the weekend’s for, right?”

Kel nodded with a grin.

It wasn’t long before they made it there. Kel ran up to the door first, and as he tried to open the door, the happy expression quickly drained from his face, which worried Sunny.

“What’s wrong?” Sunny asked with a frown. He tried to open the door next, and that was when it was quite obvious to him what the issue was. Oh. It was locked. Were…were they not open?

“They always used to be open at this time! Why isn’t it open now?!” Kel whined, trying again to pull open the door. Obviously, as expected, it still didn’t work. Sunny wasn’t sure if he had ever seen Kel this genuinely disappointed in his entire life. Jeez, poor guy. And, Sunny was definitely looking forward to visiting Hobbeez, too…but they’d figure something out.

“I don’t know,” Sunny replied, with a small sigh. “But it’ll be okay. We could go somewhere else instead..?” He suggested, almost unsure of his idea.

“Where could we even go?” Kel responded. “If Hobbeez isn’t open at this hour, what in the world possibly would be?”

Sunny thought for a moment, putting his hand on his chin. It didn’t take long for him to get an idea..! “I know what never closes,” Sunny said, and before he could even finish, Kel was clearly eager to know what this idea was.

“Where, Sunny?”

“Faraway Park. It’s not a business, obviously, so they’ll never close. We could hang out there for a bit, maybe?” At first, he was really determined, but once he actually started saying that, his confidence drained from him a bit. Would Kel enjoy that idea?

“That’s a great idea!” Kel beamed, celebrating by throwing his hands up in the air. Maybe he should have known that Kel would like pretty much any idea. “You’re awesome, Sunny! Let’s go!”

Once they arrived, the two of them decided to sit at the swings. Sunny was sitting still on his, while Kel was already starting to swing back and forth. “I can’t believe I didn’t think of this. We should go here every night, Sunny!” He smiled, trying to make eye contact, although he was clearly struggling seeing as he was going back and forth away from him. Sunny snorted with laughter.

“I don’t know,” he said at first, before genuinely considering it. “Maybe.” Or, perhaps he wasn’t genuinely considering it. However, if Kel really wanted to do so, he’d probably end up going along with it. They’d probably have a great time, anyway. “We could also try and head out earlier instead so we can actually make it to Hobbeez.”

“Yeah,” Kel chuckled. “I should, uh…probably check with Pedro to see what time they actually close, though. You know…just in case!”

“Mhm,” Sunny hummed in acknowledgement. Before he could think of saying anything else, Kel shouted something a bit louder than he’d expected.

“I love you, Sunny!”

Sunny almost laughed. “...I love you, too.”
