After dark was always peaceful. The gentle light of the moon never failed to comfort Tomoe even despite the whirlwind of a day. Today was no different, Nanami had of course woken up late and almost missed the bus to which he laughed and told her to be more organised while disposing her lunch in her hands. The rest was uneventful and as he sat there, reflecting under the stars, his body relaxing as he sunk further down into the hard wooden floor of the porch, listening to the sounds of the night.
He began to succumb to sleep when a jolt of panic ran through him, Nanami
Nanami had never been a fan of horror movies yet she found herself glued to her spot as she was captivated by the moving pictures on the tv, her room in a quiet darkness. Her shrine spirits cowered behind her, grasping at her pyjamas as her heart began to race, a jump scare impending. She was so consumed by the story she was unaware to the fox racing through the shrine to get to her as fast as he could before bursting through the door a wild expression painted on his face. Nanami kept watching, her eyes not moving from the exhilarating screen.
"Nanami!"
A shriek left her lips as she hurtled a pillow towards his face, as she faintly registered the familiar voice and figure stalking towards her, panic still set in his features. "What is the matter, are you hurt, did something happen?" He began gently checking her for any injuries, mumbling to himself that it was probably that damned snake when he heard her laugh bubbling through the air, "Tomoe I'm okay, promise . I was just watching a scary movie that's all, you don't need to worry". He paused, panic subsiding and being replaced with confusion, he had felt her real panic and yet once he had come to her defence there was nothing wrong. Seeing the confusion written on Tomoe's face she guided him to sit down next to her and watch the film together, "It's called a horror movie and it tries to make people scared", he still didn't understand but seemed content to stay by her side.
As the film drew on Nanami became more and more distressed before jumping behind her familiar and peering out over his shoulder, as he laughed. "My lady was it too scary for you?", a mocking tone present on his words. They stayed that way until the end, Nanami ducking when a particularly frightening scene arose, however it was only when the credits began to show, that Tomoe realised that Nanami was still hiding behind him, her hands curled into the fabric surrounding him as her chin rested on his shoulder, her heart racing.
"Nanami, it is late. You need to have sleep otherwise you shall be in a foul mood and I do not want to deal with that.", he began to move her gently so he could face her. She yawned, indicating the excitement had gotten to her. Tomoe sighed, picking her up in his arms as he mumbled about how she should be a better human and retire to her bed earlier despite how he secretly loved being close to her and being allowed to see her at her most vulnerable. She almost instantly relaxed in his arms snuggling closer as her eyes fluttered shut, sending a wave of relief through him.
It was only as he gently put her down that she stirred and grabbed him closer, tugging on his arm and muttering for him to stay. Naturally he had objections that it was improper to sleep beside her but they were soon diminished as a simple request of "don't go", changed his thoughts as he settled himself next to her, hands snaking around her torso to hold her in a more protective and loving way.
"Tomoe?" a hushed whisper
"Yes?" equally hushed
"Please don't ever leave me"
The words pulled at his heart as he looked down at her, a response already on his tongue, "Never".
She seemed happy with that answer as she relaxed into his embrace more as he mulled over unspoken words,' I shall never leave you my lady and mistress, my darling Nanami'.
